Can't save modified dpi in Preview.

I am attempting to change the dpi of several images for my publisher, from 72 to 300 dpi. The Inspector box shows that I've made the change, until I go to save the change, and it reverts back to the 72 dpi. What am I doing wrong?

It is very clear and simple - DPI is NOT a setting - it is a calculation - you divide dots (pixels) by inches and you get DPI
Changing a meaningless number in the EXIF data does not change the DPI any more that taking your bank statement and crossing out the balance and writing a larger balance in gives you more money - it is a meaningless change - DPI is only the answer to a calculation -- it can not be changed by putting a different number anywhere Re-read the answer above and read the link provided - emphasis addd

DPI is Dots Per Inch is a mathematical calculation rather than a setting - to know the DPI you first must know the pixel dimensions of the image - get this from the Info pane in iPhoto - then you need inches which you get from the person who is going to print the image - digital images have no inches, only pixels - physical images (computer displays are usually 72 DPI displays) do have DPI but you calculate it rather than set it
So if you want to print an image at 8" x 10" and 300 DPI then the digital image image must be 2400 x 3000 pixels or larger - see http://www.rideau-info.com/photos/mythdpi.html
That being said there is a meaningless DPI field in the EXIF data - while it makes no difference at all you can set a value in that meaningless field in PhotoShop Elements and maybe other programs - you can not in iPhoto

Can't save modified file to a folder in an image disk directly

I have an image disk on an external drive (firewire) and if I try to save a modified file of an existing file or do a "save as" to a folder, I'm always sent to the root directly of the finder and I have to navigate myself all the way back to the destination folder, every time. MS Word is even worse. I get a message that I have the wrong path and then it sends me back to the root directory. When I get back to the destination folder, MS Word accepts it but shows the message again, anyway. This doesn't happen if I save to the image disk directly and not go into a folder.

Perhaps your Quicken preference files are corrupted, it's not bad, and an easy fix. Locate this file or one that is similar: com.quicken.plist It should be here; MacintoshHD/Users/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file, drag it to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. It's ok to trash a pref file, your Mac will create a new one for you.

How can I save a project in pages to a jpeg to be uploaded for printing at an outside agency? I need to alter the dpi and the overall size of the file to enable enlargement.

Yes, Preview has some powerful tools for such a low-profile system app. I use it all the time.
The problem that I have with JPEG is how bad text looks after JPEG compression. TIFF or PNG seem to me to be much better choices.
Increase the zoom on one of your exports containing text and see what you think.

I'm using Word for Mac. Though there are various instructions on the Internet for modifying the templates, none make sense to me. They instruct to do something I can't follow. I change a template but can't save it to the template folder.

OK, I try to change a template using Word for Mac version 14.3.4 2011 edition.
I make a change to the template but am unable to save the darned thing to the template folder; it asks for a file name like it's a new document. I want to change the blasted template but if I can't save it as a modified template, I've accomplished nothing.
Does anyone have a solution?

When finished editing click File->Save/Save As and you can either overwrite the original file or rename it and save as new file keeping original intact.

How can you save keynote slides as high resolution (300 dpi) images?

Apparently there is a way to save powerpoint slides as 300 dpi images, with some finagling, but not the mac version. Does anyone know how to do this in keynote? Or is there a relativley easy way to do it with free/cheap software? I can increase the dpi in photoshop, but it doesn't produce crisp images for obvious reasons.

You are using the wrong terminology to describe creating an image file
- dpi ( meaning dots per inch ) is the measurement used in printing to create the number of print dots per inch that will be deposited on to physical media like paper or film   This is done in the printer settings box of the print driver and is dependant on how the individual printer can print..
ppi ( meaning pixels per inch ) is the measurement you need to use when creating the number of pixels in a digital image file. You establish image resolution in Keynote using the inspector;
Keynote > inspector > document > slide size
I can increase the dpi in photoshop, but it doesn't produce crisp images for obvious reasons.
You can resample images in editing applications such as Photoshop or Painter but what you are doing is adding non image information to the image to increase pixel count, this is called noise. As you state this is not the procedure to use in your situation.

I altered some notes in a GB loop to make it more pleasing to me.

I can't save *new* documents back to SharePoint

I can’t save *new* documents back to SharePoint. We have a SharePoint 2013 development environment, running on Windows Server 2012 and a Windows 7 Client Computer with Office 2010.
Every time I click „new document“, SharePoint opens the corresponding template file in the client application (Word, Excel,…) So far, so good. When i select „Save“, the client application brings up a local save path on the client computer, not the SharePoint
document library.
I did some research and tried many approaches, but none of them worked.
I installed the Desktop Experience Feature on the Windows Server 2012, added the server address to trusted sites, gave the user farm-administrator rights (to make sure it is no security problem) and switched the authentication mode for the web application.
Does anyone know this problem and found a solution?

For troubleshooting your issue, you can try to add a registry value to your local registry (on a machine with Office Applications installed through which you are accessing SharePoint sites):
Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Multi-String Value.
Type AuthForwardServerList, and then press ENTER.
On the Edit menu, click Modify.
In the Value data box, type the URL of the server that hosts the Web share, and then click OK.
Note You can also type a list of URLs in the Value data box. For more information, see the "Sample URL list" section in this article.

I can't save changes to my PDF document?

I downloaded a PDF document from Google Chrome onto my desktop. (It's a job application). However, every time I make changes to it, click save, and then open it up again using Preview, none of my changes have saved. Help?

No -- I installed adobe acrobat -- and now, whether I'm signed in or not -- the little disc/save icon is whited out and it can no longer be selected -- when I open a PDF I can only save it to the cloud

I deleted my desktop icon - now I can't save things to the desktop!

After a complete meltdown of my computer (and thank GOD I backed everything up!!) ... I'm transferring everything back to my iMac from an external drive ... BUT, I deleted the little "desktop" icon from my finder folder - or more like, I dragged a desktop folder from the external hard drive and "replaced" the desktop icon.
Now I can't save anything to the desktop. When I drag something to the desktop it says "The item cannot be moved because the 'desktop' cannot be modified."
Is there a way to get this back???

Under "Ownership & Permission" is says "You can - Read & Write", so that's not the issue.
What I did was:
When you open the finder window, there are several icons that appear in the window - usually the Desktop icon, the Home icon, the Applications icon, the Documents icon, the Movies icon, the Music icon and the Pictures icon.
What I did was, I dragged a "Desktop FOLDER" over from an external hard drive and it asked me if I wanted to replace the Desktop. I said "Yes" and now I no longer have the DESKTOP ICON on the left side of the finder window and I can no longer drag and drop things to the desktop.
The desktop icon no longer exists, so I can't access my desktop VIA the finder window.
Does this make sense?

What OS are you running.. this is usually only a problem in Mavericks.
If so I recommend you mount the hard disk manually..
Use Go, Connect to server.
Type in the IP address if static.. eg
AFP://10.0.1.1
Or the name.. but you will have issues unless the name is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. if you are using bad names.. fix it by a full factory reset in airport utility and give it all names that comply to the above.
Type in
AFP://TCname.local Where TCname is replaced with the actual name.
You will be asked for the password the first time which is public unless you changed it.. please remember to save this in the keychain.
Copy files then to a new directory you create on the TC.. do not place files inside the TM sparsebundle. Nor directly under the main directory.

How can I save pages as a document with the new Mavericks version of pages?

Is there any way to save a pages document as a Microsoft document? Additionally, is there any way to save a numbers document as an Excel document?
Since I have downloaded the new Mavericks software with the new Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, I can't save anything as a Microsoft document anymore. Can anyone please help? I'm a student needing an answer because most institutions only use Microsoft. This is an extremely upsetting fall back for Apple if there isn't a way to accomplish these activities.
Also, if anyone has any information if Apple is going to provide new drivers for old HP printers and scanners, please inform me. My multi-functional printer is obsolete (according to a phone conversation with HP). Currently, I have to jump through hoops to get the scanner to work and Preview crashes most of the time (with the Mavericks update).

iWork does not let you save a document as an Office document by default, so you have to do some extra steps. First open the document and go to File menu (on the menu bar) > Export to, and choose the Office app to create a document for Microsoft Office.
Respecting to printer drivers, Apple does not provide newer drivers for an obsolete printer. Instead, see if Gutenprint works > http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php

I've doubled my RAM but still can't save big files in photoshop...

I have just upgraded my Ram from the shipped 4GB to 8GB but I still can't save big images in photoshop. It seems to have made no difference to the speed of general tasks and saving and I can't save big files in photoshop at all. I already moved massive amounts of files off my computer and onto my external hard drive, so there is much less in my computer now, and twice the RAM but it is making no noticeable difference. When I click memory, under 'about my mac' it shows that the RAM is installed and now has twice the memory. Could this be something to do with photoshop? I'm running CS6.

Also, I just calculated 220 cm into inches and this is roughly 86.5 inches. Over 7 feet in length.
WIth an image that large, you may want to consider down sampling to a lower DPI to help with being able to work on and process images of this size much easier and it will be easier for your Print house to process, as well.
You might want to consider working with these rather large images at 225 DPI instead of 300 if resolution at close distances is still a concern.
Or what you good try is working with the images at 300 DPI, but then save them/export them as a Jpeg image at the highest image quality setting.
I do a lot of project where I use a high resolution jpeg image to save on image proceesing overhead.
The final printed images still come out pretty clear, clean and crisp without having to process those large files at a print house or having to deal with using that full resolution image in a page layout or illustration program.
