  • Can't save [Preview]

    Here's my problem...
When I edit an image I have on my desktop with the Preview app and then save it, everything works fine.
If I edit that same image with Photoshop CS6, save it (same or copy) on the desktop, and then try for example to resize or crop it with the Preview app, it won't work. It says it can't autosave because I don't have the right permissions or something like that... I already tried to repair them. I use the latest version of Lion. I also tried to do the same thing on Snow Leopard and it works fine. Is there anyone who can help me? Thanks.
(I am pretty new to Photoshop. Hope it's not something stupid I didn't know )

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Back up all data now. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to its present state
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • How can I save previews for old projects, while burning the project to DVD?

I'll admit, I haven't read the user manual cover to cover (or screen to screen for the electronic version), and haven't spent hours combing the discussions here, but I have searched for all the relevant keywords I can think of and can't find a concise answer to this question.
I get the basic idea of Vaults (I think), but haven't found much info about long term storage of projects. I'm fulltime freelance, but not super busy, and I can easily generate 100,000 images each year. I don't have the cash to be keeping all of these images in Aperture projects on external hard drives for eternity, and I'd be surprised if anyone else does. Good thing I'm not a medium format digital shooter producing 50GB each day huh?
I remember seeing a clip of a photographer 2 or 3 years ago discussing the differences between storing digital and film images. He was making the point that throwing away files you don't think you'll need again can be a mistake, citing a shot he had of Clinton and Lewinsky together, before Clinton and Lewinsky were news. "If I'd been shooting digital, that image wouldn't exist today". It was a great pic, and when that whoel scandal erupted, it made him alot of money.
So at present I'm storing every image I take in finished projects on DVD trusting that in the future I'll be looking for a shot of someone I may have shot 5, 10, 15 years ago.
I caught part of a discussion that talked about keeping the preview files for all the images (and subsequent versions) for each project. I'd love to be able to keep lo-res previews/copies of everything I've shot to date, and have them immediately accessible on my hard drive, while my full size projects are safely stored on DVD, taking up space on a bookshelf rather than on my hard drive. Loading 10 DVD's worth of projects to see what's inside them is a headache I'd like to avoid if possible, in favour of instantly checking out lo-res previews to look a shot up.
Is there an easy way to burn a completed project to DVD, but keep only the (lo res, lo size) previews on my hard drive?

    yes.
    maybe,...
    1. you might think of making DVD backups first prior to importing the photos into Aperture. "Store Files: In their current location" once in Aperture make low rez Previews, and export finished Project.
    or,
    2. bring in the photographs to hard drive first prior to importing the photos into Aperture. "Store Files: In their current location" once in Aperture make low rez Previews, and export finished Project.
the low rez Previews will stay in Aperture but the high quality Versions will be exported onto DVDs and gone from the hard drive (if you delete the originals).
another way would be to export small about 50-70 pixel wide high quality jpegs to a folder on your Desktop and import & keep these in Aperture Library as a reference. make metadata to show where the original Project DVDs are stored and DVD filing system used.

  • "Can't save preview..." messages when saving artwork in Illustrator CS5

    Hi!!
I'm having problems when trying to save artwork on Illustrator CS5. I've tried to change fonts, delete fonts , etc... and nothing seems to work. I also tried to save as instead and the problems gets fixed for a while but if I open the same file and make changes and save, the message comes back again....
    here are the messages:
The files are not locked or in use. I'm the only one working (on a MAC) on these files.
Please help!!! I don't want my files to get corrupted!!!
    THANKS!!!!

Unfortunately I don't have permission to share the file but it is not a particular file. I'm getting the message randomly when I tried to save different files. I don't think is the file but we recently switch servers. We had a mac server now we have a pc server. Do you think that might be the problem? We work from the server and save everything in there. The other designers that I work with are getting similar messages.
The files are not locked or the folder, I tried to save it from a new document and it works, but later on the problem comes back.
Question: Should I delete the whole "Adobe CS5 Illustrator Settings" folder, I was not sure if you meant that there is a folder inside named settings?
    Thanks you for your help!!!

  • How can I save preview files to other than C: drive?

My development machine has multiple drives and network drives. The C:/ drive is the oldest, slowest and fullest. I am using Elements, but have used Premiere over the years. Back then, we could make the program work better by off-loading files from C:. I do not see how to do so with P Elements 9.

Go to Edit>Preferences and change the location of the program's Scratch Disks.
I use a lot of FW-800 externals, to migrate my Projects between computers, and keep my full set of Scratch Disks on that external.
I would NOT choose one of the networked drives, because of speed.
    Good luck,

  • "Can't finish previewing" error, file can not be save

I have AI CS3 installed on a PC running Windows XP 64bit at Intel Core(TM) 6600 2.4GHz with 8 GB of RAM and NVIDIA Quadro FX 540. I have been getting the error "Can't finish previewing. Could not complete the requested operation." This happens many times and I am not sure what is going on.
I've manage to open other files and create new files but I just cant "save" or "save as" this current file it says "An unknown error has occurred" after the above mentioned error emerge.
it seems that there was a post by other user on this issues too, there are a few similar things in our spec. hope this would help to fix this problem.

I have just bought a Panasonic Lumix compact camera. Aperture and Preview can't open the RAW files from this camera. Panasonic recommend downloading 'SYLKPIX Developer Studio SE' to save RAW file formats. How can Aperture and Preview read the files?

Either use 'SYLKPIX Developer Studio SE' to develope the RAW files and to save them in another lossless format like TIFF, or try if Adobe's free DNG Coverter can convert your Lumix RAW files to dng. Then import the dngs. This way, your files will still be RAW files.  This works (most times) for my Lumix FZ28.

  • How can I save pages as a document with the new Mavericks version of pages?

Is there any way to save a pages document as a Microsoft document?  Additionally, is there any way to save a numbers document as an Excel document?
Since I have downloaded the new Mavericks software with the new Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, I can't save anything as a Microsoft document anymore.  Can anyone please help?  I'm a student needing an answer because most institutions only use Microsoft.  This is an extremely upsetting fall back for Apple if there isn't a way to accomplish these activities.
Also, if anyone has any information if Apple is going to provide new drivers for old HP printers and scanners, please inform me.  My multi-functional printer is obsolete (according to a phone conversation with HP).  Currently, I have to jump through hoops to get the scanner to work and Preview crashes most of the time (with the Mavericks update).

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
iWork does not let you save a document as an Office document by default, so you have to do some extra steps. First open the document and go to File menu (on the menu bar) > Export to, and choose the Office app to create a document for Microsoft Office.
Respecting to printer drivers, Apple does not provide newer drivers for an obsolete printer. Instead, see if Gutenprint works > http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php

  • Suddenly, I can't save Safari web pages as PDFs. ???

I often download website documents to my Mac Pro by choosing the "Save as PDF" option in the Print dialog box. Suddenly, that option is "grayed-out" and unavailable. There's a Save as Postcript option which ultimately fails, and I can print the document on paper, which is not an acceptable alternative.
This problem appeared after I downloaded the latest System 10.4.9 update, but I can't say whether that's the cause.
I can still save Safari pages as PDF files on my G4 Power Book, also running 10.4.9, but not on the Mac Pro. Both computers have Adobe CS2's PDF capabilities in addition to Apple's Preview software.
Any ideas? (Previous posts on similar problems did not have an answer.)

    Hello David:
    Hard to tell what happened.
I would do a couple of things:
    Clear the Safari cache.
Trash the preference file (com.apple.safari.plist) and restart.
If that does not help, you could (depending on how important the function is to you) run an archive and install:

  • How to alter project's dpi when saving and can you save as jpeg

How can I save a project in pages to a jpeg to be uploaded for printing at an outside agency? I need to alter the dpi and the overall size of the file to enable enlargement.

    Judy,
Yes, Preview has some  powerful tools for such a low-profile system app.  I use it all the time.
The problem that I have with JPEG is how bad text looks after JPEG compression.  TIFF or PNG seem to me to be much better choices.
Increase the zoom on one of your exports containing text and see what you think.

  • I edit my photos in Photoshop, save as jpeg then import back into iPhoto.  But if I add text to an image in Photoshop can't save as jpeg but as psd. Is there any way I can change to jpeg in iPhoto?

I edit my RAW photos in Photoschop CS3, save as jpeg then import back into iPhoto 11.  If I add text in Photoshop I can't save as jpeg but as psd.  Is there any way I can change to jpeg in iPhoto?

    Terence Devlin wrote:
Yes you can. But you need to flatten it as jpeg doesn't support layers.
While the final JPEG can't have layers, it is not necessary to flatten the original Photoshop file to create a JPEG. There are two ways to make a JPEG while not losing the flexibility of preserving layers, and they both flatten on the fly while saving.
I just tried this in Photoshop CS3 myself. When I add a text layer, and choose Save, the Save As dialog box comes up and defaults to PSD as was described. But... that is just the default! Go ahead and choose JPEG from the Format pop-up menu down below the file list. JPEG is in there. So what happens to the layers? Notice when you choose JPEG, the Layers box grays out and the "As A Copy" box grays out and is checked (i.e. you cannot uncheck it). What is going on here is Photoshop will gladly make a JPEG of your layered file, but it will force the JPEG to be a copy, so as to not overwrite the original layered file. This is good, because your Photoshop file with its editable text layer is preserved, and you get a JPEG copy to put in iPhoto.
The second way is, instead of doing Save or Save As, choose File/Save for Web and Devices. This will also give you a JPEG choice, and also create an exported copy. Because this way makes files for the Web, they will be smaller than JPEGs from Save As because they will lack built-in previews (which you don't really need these days) and other extra metadata that take up space.
Either way you get a JPEG you can toss back into iPhoto.
    Terence Devlin wrote:
    Only by exporting.
The Export menu in Photoshop CS3 does not have any direct choices for JPEG.
