Can't Save the Illustration

we are currently using illustrator CC and when we go to save we get the error below?! can someone please help me out with this?
Can't save the illustration. The requested transformation would make some objects fall completely off the drawing area

Thanks for the response but that still didn't work!! it has to be a setting or something in illustrator when dealing with large files, this is a PC not a MAC,  we were originally having problems saving files with the .eps ext to it with illustrator CS5, from other bloggers that responded to those post recommended to upgrade illustrator as CS5 is only 32 bit  and it we might be maxing our on the available ram for the program.this computer is built with a I7 Processor, 32 gb ram 500 gb WD raptor hard drive 10000 rmp, 90 gb samsung SSD (scratch disk)
any other ideas that come to you please let me know
Thanks!!

  • Error -54. Can't save the illustration. (very annoying)

I get the following error multiple times a day:
Can’t save the illustration. The file may be read only, or the file is in use by another application, or you do not have the required permissions. Please save the document with a different name, or in a different folder or directory. -54
Sometimes I will work on a file for an hour before this erorr will randomly show up, but when it does I can no longer save the file unless I Save As or Save As Copy. This is frustrating. Does anyone have any idea what the issue could be? I have been unable to isolate a single action that might be causing this.
This is completely new for me. I have never ran into this error before. I'm running Windows 7 and saving locally to an internal hard drive with no other users. I am running Illustrator as an "administrator."
    Thanks!

    Hi Mike,
Thank you for your reply. I am editing an .AI file and it is not open in any other program. This error is occuring on very file I work with. Sometimes the error will go away within a minute or two, and will allow me to save. Other tims it does not and the only way to save is to mkae a copy.
Thank you for your advice. I did as you suggested and found that "Administrators" was already incldued in that list. When I tried to add Local Administrators, the system did not recognize it and wouldn't allow it.
    Unfortunately, this issue persists.

    Windows 8. Adobe Illustrator CS6
I create an illustration and saved it as an .ai file.  Now that I'm ready, I want to save it as an EPS file, but a window pops up saying "Can't save the illustration. Can't print the illustration." I tried saving it under older formats, doesn't work.  Help!

I don't think it is a Win8 issue per se. I export to EPS from both CS5.1 and CS6 on Windows 8 64-bit. It may well be a user account issue or the CS6 installation itself.
Try creating a new user account on the Win 8 computer and try it. Only takes a few minutes with the reboot.

Getting error "Can't save the illustration.  The file may be read only, or the file is in use by another application."  The file is not read only and is not in use by another application.

The same thing may happen in Windows Explorer, specifically if it is a very big file (physical size), so preparing the preview may take a lot of time.
In that case it is used by "another application", that is: Explorer.
By the way, which version of Illustrator are you using, Tetons?

I haven't changed anything. This is my personal work station. And where do I find user account privileges?

I wan't to save an AI file as an EPS. I get a message; Can't save the illustration. The requested transformation would make some objects fall completely off the drawing area. I already did the ctrl+A but there is nothing outside my drawing area! It is a quit big file 2GB, but I don't think that this should be a problem! I really hope that somebody can help me?!?

    It does, blablabla.

    OS X - 10.8

    Windows Server 2008 Share
This error is reported when attempting to save an illustrator file over an existing file with the same name. Yes saving it to the desktop and then copying it over the file on the shared drive works. This is not a solution for us. Full access has been granted to the user on the network share being used.

    Try some updates:

Then look into windows server updates

Can you try saving a second time after the error, as that may let you save in some situations, though usually that is with Photoshop, sometimes with Illustrator when PDF compatible is on.

  • Can't save the illustration - CS3

I have a Dell Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz, 4Gb RAM(Windows allows only 3Gb for XP). When saving my file(about 15MB), I get this error message and the file is lost, need to rework. Moreover, when the file is open, Illustrator uses about 512MB mem usage in Task Manager. How come so much?

    How come so much?
Why not? You are mistaking file size on disk for what memory the content requires when expanded and unpacked. Just like many image formats, AI files are compressed and can contain multiple times the amount of data than the raw file size. Similarly, vector data is a description of how things have to look, not rendered pixels. Just like I can say "blue circle with 1cm radius" and draw visible content from it on paper, so can AI render that circle, but in order to display it, it needs to render pixels, which consume much more memory. The rest is not really clear. From permission issues to poor disk performance to using external drives there could be any number for save failures, so you need to clarify where and what you are saving and how your disk setup is.

  • ERROR! can't open the illustration. the illustration contains an illegal operand. Offending operator '((((((((((((((((((((((( 1Gm

    Hello, good people. Please help!
I am working on a project that consists of one .ai file that contains 27, letter sized art boards.
I am using Adobe cs5-Illustrator on a macbook pro.
I have opened and closed and save this file many, many times—I have been working on this for the last 2+weeks.
Today, when I tried to open the file I received an error message that read: "can't open the illustration. the illustration contains an illegal operand. Offending operator '((((((((((((((((((((((( 1Gm
A screen shot of the entire message is below. Can anyone please help me to ward of this "offending operator?"
    Thank you in advance.

    AAhlene,
It is strange that the offending operation is not shown in context within the message.
Are you saving to your own harddisk( see below)?
One thing often tried first is to create a new document and File>Place the (PDF contents, if any, of the) corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way.
Here are some websites where you can see whether it can rescue the actual file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,

    http://markzware.com/adobe-software/fix-illustrator-file-unknown-error-occurred-pdf2dtp-fi le-recovery/
    http://www.illustrator.fixtoolbox.com/
As far as I remember, the first one is for Win and the second one is for Mac, while the third one should be for both.
Here are a few pages about struggling with it yourself:

    http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/enable-content-recovery-mode-illustrator.html
External media: It is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky (for a while), but the chances of file corruption and other unpleasantnesses are immensely greater when you use anything but the harddisk, and it is better to be safe than sorry.
In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/illustrator-support-networks-removable-media.html
To have a network actually work may require some work.
If you transfer by external means it is always safest to zip/compress the file to avoid corruption.

  • "Can't Save the File. Can't Print the File" error in Illustrato CS3

I get the error "CAN'T SAVE THE FILE. CAN'T PRINT THE FILE". In Illustrator CS3
According to adobe this is an issue of having more that 28 spot colors, so I went to the swatch palette and pulled the fly-out menu out and told it to remove any unused swatches which took me down to 6 spot colors, but I still get the error when trying to save it to EPS format, which is the format I have to have for the ripping program for the vinyl printer in my sign shop. Saving it in AI format causes no issues.
Is there still something I am missing?
    Thanks
    Roger

I appreciate your comment, I see what your saying.
However...my issue is...I am making a vehicle wrap on a full size van for a radio station and it consist of pictures of a clouds for the background with two pictures of music artist that are associated with the kind of music this station plays, then there is a big round logo of the radio station that involves three spot colors (Purple, white and one of which is technically the black "K" ribbon) along with the web address of the station but it is of the same colors of the radio station logo...then there is the corporate logo that utilizes another spot color (blue)so as you can see I need the spot colors that I'm using.
So just to make sure I'm clear...I can only have 28 different individual colors, even though I have photos involved in the rendering? How can I make that work because photos obviously have more than 28 colors in them. It doesn't make sense because you can do a live trace on something in literally hundreds of colors.
Would it help if I flattened the photo work from photoshop before I move it to Illustrator? The reason I ask is because when I go to save and choose EPS the next save dialogue that comes up...down at the bottom there is two exclamations that one says something about embedding fonts, which I'm not concerned about and the other is something about there is some artwork that needs flattening.
Please bear with me here cause I am definitely a newbie!! My boss threw to the wolves on this adventure and I am learning by reading and trial and error.
    Thanks
    Roger

  • Illustrator cs6 Can't open the illustration. Could not complete the requested operation.

    Hi guys
I'm struggling with my Illustrator CS6. I hope you will help me.
When I try to open my project it says "Can't open the illustration. Could not complete the requested operation." After clicking ok my project is loaded WITHOUT one layer. I sacrificed a lot of time doing it and i don't want to start it over again. None of the ways to open it as older version of program work. I know that it can be recovered, because when I open the same project in After Effects all layers are loaded properly. If somebody know how to solve this problem please let me know asap.

Thanks, Monica, Ryan, and Mike. It helps to know that this is the best I'm likely to get, so I don't waste more time looking for a better solution.
I was able to place the file, then simply redraw or retype the broken parts on top of the placed art. Often, I could click into the placed art and copy contents from it. For type, though, I had to retype whatever got broken.
Since I posted my 1st comment here on Dec. 5, it happened to me again. Again, I had to reconstruct parts of it, the same way.
Sometimes, I save a file without PDF compatibility enabled, just to make it save more quickly. I'm glad I didn't do that with this file.

  • Can't open the illustration.

I have a fresh installation of MC CS5.
I'm trying to import PSD-file to an AI document, but all I get is a message that says:
    Can't open the illustration.
    No errors or anything else.
If I try to use Place for my PSD-file, nothing happens.
I have 30 images in que and my client is waiting.
This kind of problems are the last thing I need right now.
    My system:
    W7 Pro 64bit
    12G RAM
    GeForce GTX 470
    Corsair Force 3 SSD

Apparently, thanks to suggestions solicited in other locations, the resolution turned out to be renaming the documents and settings/[username]/Application Date/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS Settings folder, so that Illustrator would recreate the folder upon opening (similar to the common InDesign fix which I had been looking for an equivalent). Specifically, after testing, it was the AIPrefs file in that folder that caused the problems.
Now AI can save, open files, whatever.
    And there you have it.

  • Can't open the illustration.  What is this?

I was working along, minding my own business...I went to save my file (my very simple file) and it gave me the "not enough memory to preview..." error message.  So, I shut the system down, brought it back up and now it says "Can't open the Illustration. Could not complete the requested operation." and my page is blank! Can anyone explain this and is my file truly gone? (CS2, 10.something)

If you did a clean save without the computer crashing, and the file size looks normal, then the information is then and we should be abel to fix this.
In the finder do a CMD I on the file (On windows right click and do properties). What is the file size?
When you save, do you save with pdf compatible turned on, the default(I honestly despise this being on default for reasons I will not discuss now, but in this case it can be a very good thing for you).
If yes you can open this in Acrobat, and do a save as to a new filename. Then open this in illustrator.

    42nato,
You may try the list (skip 5) in this case).
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media, see below. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.
