Can't save to server

In my work environment we save and keep all files on our servers (windows). When i try to save a PS file on the server, I get a promt telling me " Could not save because the file name was not valid". The file name is test.jpg - no strange characters nor to many. I have a Mac Pro 2x 2.8 MHz, 6 giga RAM OS 10.6.8. My suspicion is that it's a problem between Windows server and Mac. This setup is not uncommon in many workplaces, so it's a real hassle.
With CS5 I can save to the server, but not if I "save for web". Then the server says it will only support 37 characters in the file name even if there is only one character.

That means that the server, or the OS, has a problem.
But it can be incredibly difficult to troubleshoot network problems, and Adobe does not officially support opening or saving to a file server because of that.

  • Photoshop CS6 can't save to server after upgrading to Mac OS Yosemite Server from Mac Lion Server

We recently upgraded our server from a Mac Pro 2008 with OS X Lion Server to a Mac Mini 2014 with LaCie 20TB 5Big Thunderbolt 2 RAID drive. Everything is working fine with the exception of Photoshop. It does it intermittently but once it happens it will continue to do so. We get message like "Can't save to disk because of disk error" and "Can't save file because of program error" . Sometime we are able to do a "save as" and save over it. Most of the time we have to "save as" with a different file name and then rename and recopy the file. We have check permission on all the file as well as the server HD has ignore ownership checked. Again only three things changed. 1) Sever hardware change from Mac Pro to Mac Mini. 2) Server software upgraded from 10.7 Lion to 10.10 Yosemite(both have the latest update). 3) Drive when from internal on Mac Pro to External Thunderbolt 2 LaCie drive. We have no problem with Illustrator or Indesign. Only Photoshop. Anyone with any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately you seem to be using Photoshop in a way that Adobe discourages, so you may not be getting a lot of helpful advice.

  • Photoshop CS6 constant crashes, can't save to server

We recently upgraded our Adobe Creative Suite from CS3 to CS6. Now I am experiencing issues with Photoshop CS6 I have not seen in previous versions, it seems it cannot save files across a network any longer. If I try to work normally, saving my files to a folder on our server, PS crashes constantly. The new recovery mode is handy but time and space consuming= inefficient for our workflow. My work around is to save files to my Mac, and then copy them to the server later, which is Archaic and also inefficient. When I try to save a PS CS6 .eps to the server, it does not work any longer, I get the message; Program Error or a freeze and crash of Photoshop CS6. Is this a permanent issue or is there someone working to resolve it? I am thinking I will need to go back to using Photoshop CS3 in order to continue working efficiently.

Most of the problems saving across networks are OS bugs and fileserver bugs.
In fact, Apple just fixed a handful of them in 10.8.4 (but sadly, not all of them).
Photoshop CS6 added more error detection for file saving, in response to lost files on fileservers (due to OS bugs).  Older versions of Photoshop could silently lose files when saving due to those OS bugs.
Photoshop CC attempts to work around the known OS bugs, and has fallback saving strategies in case we detect a problem while saving the file.  (but it took us a long time to understand all the OS bugs related to fileservers)

  • How can I save/backup my server configuration ?

    Hi,
I'm new to OS X Server.
I have my server configured and running as planed.
But how can I save the server configurations?
So in case I have to reinstall, I can just reload the configuration.
    Thanks,
    JO

You can also run the the Server Assistant (/Applications/Server/Server Assistant.app) and save the resulting configuration to a file or as a directory record.
If that file is present at the root level of any local drive, or present on a directory server, when a new copy of Mac OS X Server boots up for the first time (Think USB pen drive) it will automatically configure itself and reboot.
This can be very useful if you need to setup many servers at once. However, you are only storing the serial number and a few basic settings (time zone, which services to turn on by default, etc) so this feature isn't really all that great for disaster recovery purposes. It can, however, save you a few minutes dealing with serial numbers when you need to rebuild a server NOW.
Also, since none of your services will be configured yet, it's usually best practice to setup a server without any services turned on (except maybe remote desktop) and then turn them on after you get things setup. This is where those "tear" sheet .plist backup files from Server Admin come in handy.

It seems to be computer related beacuse I have no problem when I´m using an other computer.

    Hi Daniel,
Which version of Excel are you using ?  We have a few of us that still use Excel 2000 (although not officially supported) and up to SP4 we did not have the issue.  After implementing SP5, we have the same error.  Only ones that don't have the problem are people on Excel 2003...Might be coincidence, but I was under the impression that that was our issue.

  • How can I save a file in the server?

    Hello,
I am writing a Java Web Start program that it will generate a html file, how can I save the generated file in the server, fro example, the directory where I stored my JAR files. Because right now, it will create the html file in the local client mahcine instead of the server. Can anyone tell me how can I do this? Thanks you.

Yeah, thanks but that's not what I was trying to ask.
I know that you can save and open a document by performing these three steps:
    1. Confirming to save a file to the Downloads folder
    2. Open the download manager by clicking the temporarily green arrow
    3. Clicking on the downloaded file
What I would like to know is whether or not it is possible to have Firefox open a saved file ''automatically''. At the moment, if I choose to open it automatically, it is only saved to my temp folder.
It would be great though if it was saved to my Downloads folder ''and'' opened with the respective program on my pc. Is there a way to do this?

  • 3ds max can't save to lion server, 3ds max can't save to lion server

I know there have been many discussions in the past few weeks.
Please if any one can help me with a sollution or work around I will appreciate it.
We have a mac mini server and both mac's and windows in the office.
All work perfect except 3ds max can't save or open files from the lion server. All other programs work perfect from the windows machines to the lion server.
    Anybody found a solution yet?

No I'm still going around in circles. It's infuriating, everything else is working fine, I just have this one issue with the .max files.
I phoned Apple yesteday, hoping that they may help as we have an AppleCare Protection Plan that supposedly has software support. They have not managed to help in anyway, and have suggested that I take out some kind of cross platform support at extra cost, although they may not be able to help either.
They are saying it is third party software vendors responsibility to sort out a fix, which annoys me, as we haven't changed the third party software, we've upgraded the server and now our workflow is broken. I have read of other people that have contacted Autodesk about the issue and they have said that the problem is down to Apple using their own SMB in Lion Server, but haven't mentioned any kind of fix/workaround.
I don't know whether switching the servers SMB off and running SMBup may help. It's not something I really want to do, but I'm really running out of ideas.

  • Calendar can't save event to exchange server

Since moving to Yosemite I've been getting this error message with calendar - "Calendar can't save event "{event name}" to the Exchange server."
I'm unable to find any fix, including turning on/off time zone support. I've also re-established the exchange account more than once - each time the error eventually comes back (with a different calendar event).
Here's a link to a discussion on this subject, however, it was created under OS X Mountain Lion. I never encountered this issue prior to Yosemite. Thus, I created a new discussion here under OS X Yosemite.
Re: Calendar - Exchange sync issue
Has anyone created a workaround yet?

I had this issue too. Since all my data was present on the exchange server, I decided for the "delete" approach.  First i quit the calendar app, then I went into library/calendars. There i deleted all files including Calendar cache and several folders ending on .exhange and .calendar.  After a reboot i reconfigured my exchange account and everything seems to work fine now.

  • After share moved to new Server User can't save .xls file anymore.

    Dear Forum,
we have a strange problem here. Situation:
A fileshare got moved from a very old Server 2000 to our new 2008 R2 Server. Ever since the departments share moved Servers she (and her colleagues) get "unsuspected file lock by user" messages. Even if they unlock it and change something they
    can't save it.
There was a file lock from that user even though she wasn't logged in. We removed that.
There were some crude inherited rights from the old share. We purged them and the rights should be ok. (effective file permission says so, too!)
    Her tmp files were deleted.
I for example can access the file without problem.
We are currently out of ideas and any help is apreciated.

  • Ical can´t save the event "event name" to the exchange server

I have been trying to set up iCal to work with exchange in several Macs runnig Snow Leopard but there seems to be some time zone issue.
When I try to save a new event, I get a error: iCal can't save the event "event name" to the exchange server. The account "account name" currently can't be modified, to discard...       If I change the city in time zone preferences to anything outside Mexico (for example Dallas Tx.) then everything works perfect, the problem is all of my users are in Mexico City aund using CST instead may cause other problems.
I have tried with time zone support enabled and also disabled.
Something very odd is that existing events can be modified or deleted, even with the city set to Mexico in time zone preferences.
    ¿Any suggestions?

UPDATE 2: Found aother post that explains that this problem was fixed by enabling time zone support in iCal and then changing the city to the correct one by clicking in the upper right corner of iCal´s window where the time zone is displayed.  https://discussions.apple.com/message/10108361#10108361
Well, I followed instructions mentioned above. By clicking on the upper right corner, a new window opens showing current iCal time zone settings (Not the same as Mac OS), in this window, time zone seems right (CDT), but as closest city, "UTC-UTC" is selected, so I change this to México and click OK, but the problem continues. If I go back to this iCal´s time zone window, "UTC-UTC" is still selected! and no mater how many times i change it back, after clicking OK, "UTC-UTC" comes back!.
Something else I just found out is that if the city is changed to anything outside Mexico within the same time zone in system preferences, as I mentioned before I can save events, but now in the upper right corner of iCal, I have two different CDT´s, one named "CDT Central Time" (the one that works) and other named "CDT Central Standard Time" (the one that doesn't).
My guess is that because daylight saving start and finish dates in Mexico are different from USA's, Apple created a different time zone with Mexico's rules (CDT CentralStandard Time) but something is wrong with it.

    Hi,
The issue is related to the temporary files when we using the Word 2013.
Look for anything ending with a TMP file extension or anything that starts with a dollar sign ($). Anything with the TMP extension can be deleted outright; anything that starts with a dollar sign can be deleted if it appears that the file is simply a Word
document with the dollar sign added as a prefix. You can find more information about Word's use of temporary files at this page in the Knowledge Base:

  • Can't save movie captures to server...only to client

l have iMovie 11 (9.0) on a 10.6.8 client.  I can't save movie clips to the server, but can save to the client. When I try to "File->Import from camera" (local iSight), then "capture", on the dialog that pops up I see "Save To:" with three shares:
    1) "Mac HD" (local main partition),
    2) "Data Store" (local data partition), and
    3) "SERVER-USERDATA" (the main area on the server for network user data).
Share#1,2 show lots of gigs free, and I can save to these areas. (But I think I'll have a problem with network users if they log onto another machine, the clip won't be available.)
Share#3 shows 0gig free.  But there is plenty of space on the server.  If I try to save here, i get a dialog that says "... you may not have permissions to write to "/Network/Servers/rbserver.lan/SERVER-USERDATA/iMovieEvents.localized."
Where does it pull these sharepoints from?  (SERVER-USERDATA is NOT a share of it's own, there are shares "under" it, like /server-userdata/students/...)
    2 Questions:
    1) any idea why it's not recognizing any free space on server share?
    2) If I want to change the sharepoint that shows up for iMovie clip saving, where can I specify that? (on the client)

    thanks Abhilash.
i've never configured pass-through html for the cr for enterprise viewers before but others have...please see this thread. you may wish to get this to work first before you get too far.
even if you don't use webelements and write your own embedded html & javascript, you need to activate pass-through html as that's the required feature. a simple test to see if you've got it to work is to create a formula to put on your report like the following and if the tags don't show up then your implimentation was successful.
    '<DIV>this is a div</DIV>'
once that works, you can copy the syntax for the weautorefresh and create a formula based on that syntax and it should work in theory. however, the code for that function was written for the dhtml viewer for crystal reports and not the viewer for crystal reports for enterprise.
please do let us know how this part goes though.

  • Gedit can't save to mounted ftp server

I mounted an ftp server with curlftpfs, as the wiki recommends this method:
    sudo curlftpfs ftp://some.server.com /media/ftp.some.server.com/ -o user=user:pass,allow_other,ftp_port=-
I had some trouble to get it to work because it turns out I have to use active mode (I expanded the wiki), but now it works great, and I can cp, mv, rm and edit files as if they were on my local machine.
Except in gedit, which refuses to save files to the mounted ftp. At first it segfaulted, just printing 'Segmentation fault' to the terminal, but this crashing stopped after disabling all plugins. But instead of crashing I now get "Could not save the file $FILE. You do not have the permissions necessary to save the file. Please check that you typed the location correctly and try again."
Same thing when starting gedit as root, odd. So I checked what the permissions were:
    ls -l /media/ftp.some.server.com/file.asp
    ---------- 1 root root 811 17 jan 21:48 /media/ftp.some.server.com/file.asp
I guess this is because the FTP server runs some flavor of windows and doesn't have unix file permissions. After googling unsuccesfully I wanted to start a topic in the networking subforum, but first I tried to change the file using nano, to be sure it wasn't a gedit issue. To my suprise nano can indeed save the file, so I'm putting this in applications and desktop environments.
I think nano is checking the permissions before trying to save the file, while gedit doesn't. Does any of you got an idea to stop it doing this, or to fix the permissions?

With some help from the nice guys in #gedit, I managed to narrow the problem down to gio, a component of glib used by gedit to save files.
I did file a bug on the gnome bugzilla: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=668147.

  • Can't save location for Trash at Server Settings (IMAP setting).

    Hi,
I'd like to set a folder (one under an account name) to move messages to when deleting messages with IMAP.
I can't select Trash under an account name at Server Settings. I can only select Trash under "Inbox" under the account name.
I find that the folder settting was not saved at all. Folders settings for sent messages and drafts are OK.
How can I save a folder setting (one under an account name) for deleted messages ?
I guess this situation results to 2 Trashes (one under the account name and oner under "Inbox" under the account name). In fact, I have a trouble deleting Trash under "Inbox" under the account name.
Thanks in advance for any advices or clues for the solution or workaround.

    (addition to the question)
To be exact, folder selection pull-down menu doesn't start with the account name, rather, start with "Inbox", therefore, I can only choose Trash under "Inbox".
