Can't Scan to Photosmart 5520 on OSX 10.10

I am trying to scan from my HP Photosmart 5520 to my Mac which is running OS X 10.10.1 (Yosemite).  I used to be able to scan just fine but now that I've upgraded to Yosemite it no longer works.  I can print just fine but scanning doesn't work at all. I  can't scan from the Printer utility (System Preferences | Printers & Scanners | Scan). I can't scan using the HP Scan utility (I receive an error saying HP Scan can't communicate with my device).  And I also can't scan using the scan to printer option.  In fact, I can't even enable the scan to printer option in the HP Utility because I get a message that the software isn't installed despite having just downloaded today the most recent HP software for this device and installing it and ensuring the HP Scan option was selected during installation.
This is incredibly frustrating. I'm hoping someone can help me resolve this.
Thanks
Shane

I have recently download OS 10.9 Mavericks. And now HP PHOTOSMART 5520 SCAN is not working properly. In fact I cannot scan. I use the printer by wifi.
Do we need drivers for OSX 10.9 Mavericks?

I should be more clear. Scanning with HP Scan, I can scan and see a preview. I can save the file ONCE but the image or docuement is garbled when I open the saved file. If I try to save again using a different format (and a different name), I get the error:
"An error has occured saving the file because it could not be written to. Check the proerties for the file to make sure it is not read-only."

  • MAC OS X Yosemite scanning from Photosmart 5520

Hello, I updated my MAC to OSX Yosemite version 10.10  and my HP Photosmart  5520 printer stopped scanning.  I uninstalled the HP software and reinstalled it but the HP Utility keeps saying, "HP utility has quit unexpectedly, a report as been sent to Apple". It comes on for a quick second as if something is blocking it.  I tried to turn off my firewall but it still did not work.  I saw another post that they suggested to download 10.9 from the HP drivers and software, that still did not work.  My printer says the software is not installed on my computer.  I am also using a USB cable,, not wireless. Thanks!

    Hello @kendeebrad,
    Welcome to the HP Forum,
I see you lost the ability to scan via USB from your Photosmart 5520 to your Mac after upgrading to 10.10.
I would like to help you with this issue.
Have you verified and repaired the disk permissions?
I would uninstall the software again, then verify and repair the disk permissions.
After that check for any apple updates.
next, reboot the Mac. when it has started up again, goto hp.com.
From here download the most upto date drivers for the photosmart 5520.
Install the drivers again and test the scan feature.

  • Can't Scan: HP Photosmart C4200

Hello-I've looked thru this discussion forum and cannot find my exact answer. I have an HP Photosmart All in One C4200 Printer. When it's connected to my MAC (10.6.4) it prints and scans fine. I recently bought a airport express so that I can print thru the network. However, now I cannot scan.
when I go thru system preferences, the network printer is listed, but there is no print/scan button. When I click Open Print Queue, there is not Import Image. I click on Options & Supplies while the network printer is connected, Utility tab, Open Printer Utility, and it's not able to connect to printer ("Printer is currently unavailable, please check if it is turned on and connected"). I know that it is connected because I printed a test page.
I try to hit the scan button on the printer itself and its says that it's not connected. I go to HP Scan Pro, and says "Error, Sorry Scanner could not be initialized (Scanner not found)."
I've read that possible this printer is not supported to scan thru the network? Please help!
    Thanks.

  • Photosmart 5520 on OSX mountain lion wont print via wifi

set this up several times, having 'reset printers' etc etc, but it just will not print via wifi - just get a message saying printer is busy.
it works ok via usb cable - and it even works via wifi when printing a test page in utlities!
    totally stumped.

As much as I aware from my personal experience I came accross this model where a talk talk representiv has confirmed that the HG533does not support Bonjour.. I suggest checking that with talk talk.
You may try a temporary direct connection without using the router and check for any change, I believe that will work what means that the router break the connection.
To test such a connection follow step one below to enable wireless direct for the printer:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03269394&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=5157536&tmp...
Next click the Wi-Fi icon, select Join other network and select Show Networks.
Select and connect to the Wireless Direct name.
Under Print and scan click the Plus sign, try adding the printer and check for any difference.
Once done testing reconnect the devices to your router..

  • HP Photosmart 5520. Can't scan to my computer

HP Photosmart 5520. I can print FROM my computer just fine, but can't scan from the printer TO my computer. Message is "Connection Error." This happens sometimes, but usually I can fix by turning everything off, disconnecting, and starting over. Today nothing works. This is getting tiresome. Printing works fine.  BTW, I do not control the router & can't just turn it on and off. I am not technologically savvy; I just want the thing to work.

    Hi,
The scan to computer is disabled by default (I don't know why the software girls/guys desinged that way). On my machine, driver for Windows 8 is much better (even same exe file). Please enable it using the following steps (please note: for Windows machines)
Double click printer icon on desktop,
       Click Manage Scan to Computer,
       Click Enable
You may want to tick the last square too.

  • Photosmart 5520 won't scan to Mac

Today I bought a Photosmart 5520 e-All-In-One to replace my previous B110.  I cannot get it to scan to my iMac, after hours of trying.  My iMac is running Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 and is fully up-to-date as of today.  When I try to scan, the printer provides the following message - "No Computer Found.  Make sure the printer software is installed on your computer, and that "Scan to Computer" is enabled via the printer software.".  I have installed, uninstalled, "scrubbed" and reinstalled 6 times, from the CD only, and from the HP website both via the link on the CD and independenlty. I have shut down the printer, pulled out the cable and put it back again numerous times.  I have shut down and restarted the iMac just as many times. I've tried using the USB cable provided, and wirelessly.  The printer will let me print from the iMac wirelessly.  The printer will communicate wirelessly with our old Windows laptop, both for printing and scanning.  The HP Utility on the iMac is having trouble with the "Enable Scan to Computer".  Sometimes it reads "Communication Error.  Unable to communicate with device.  Check Cables and connection settings.  If the problem persists, try restarting your computer and the HP device.".  Which I have, and as I say, it will print wirelessly.  Sometimes the "Scan Settings and "Scan to Computer" icon are absent altogether.  Sometimes, I click on the icon for Scan to Computer and HP Utilites "unexpectedly" shuts down altogether.  I've scoured the HP site, discussion groups, Google, etc, for nearly 8 hours.  When I try to go through "Image capture" in Applications, it tells me that there is "No camera or scanner connected". When I try to go through HP Scan in Device Utilites in Applications, the message reads  "Scanner communication cannot be established.  HP Photosmart series is currently unavailable.  Ensure your device is powered on, check the connection, and ensure your network is functioning properly.  If theses conditions are correct, restart the device and try scanning again."    All of these have been checked, but nothing seems to work.  Why won't it scan to the iMac?  Can it be fixed or should I just give  up and return it?

  • Why the copier function of Photosmart 5520 just can copy A4 size paper?

I just bought a Photosmart 5520. It works great and have no problem doing photo printing, scanning and wireless printing. However, when I use the copier function. I found that I always missed part of the copied sheet. After checking the setting I found that it has a paper size setting of 8.5x11 inches (Letter) while the sheet size I'm using is a A4 size paper. Going into the setting and checking whether I can change the paper setting to A4, I found that there are just 3 size to choose - 8.5x11 inches (letter), 4x6 inches, and 5x 7 inches. How can this be? Why isn't there A4 size (which is also a very common size) to choose from while I have no problem selecting A4 with print funciton or scaning A4?

A4 size paper only. There is no prompt for adjusting the paper size. BTW, there is no problem printing A4 size document.

  • How to go about using Photosmart 5520 for scanning when my OS is Win 7 Starter edition?

After installing Photosmart 5520 driver onto my netbook whose OS is Win 7 Starter, I can perform scanning if I choose wireless connection during the driver installation. However, after I log off the netbook and then log on later, I will always get the error message prompt "The HP Photosmart 5520 series was not found" whenever I try to open the scan dialog by clicking the button on "Scan a Document or Photo" from the HP Printer Assistant page. I get the same error messsage when I start a HP scan. If I choose USB connection during driver installation stage, I will get that error message when I click the button on "Scan a Document or Photo".
What do I do now so that I can perform scanning from my netbbok? I do not want to upgrade my OS as the notebook is already more than 2 years old, not worth upgrading its OS.

    Hello there again!
Thanks for replying to me. After digging around some more, the issue could be your OS. I have checked out the specs and Windows 7 Starter Edition does not seem to be network compatible with the printer, so a wireless or ethernet connection is out of the question, unfortunately.
Try connecting a USB cable and perform a Clean Boot and restart the PC, which will turn off all start up programs that could be disrupting scan functionality. Try a couple of scans to see if the error comes back.
Let me know if you have better results, or the results in general.

  • Photosmart 5520 - Scan Option disappears from Mac OS X 10.9 to 10.10 update

I have been searching this problem for the last 2 hours. I have already installed, deleted, reinstalled drivers from this website and Apples site.
Under printers and scanners in my System Preferences, I can choose and easily print from our HP 5520, but the scan option button has now disappeared from my 10.9 to 10.10 update. My wife has the exact same computer as me and we are both connected to the exact same 5520 printer, but she is still on 10.9 (scan option is available and works) and I am on 10.10 (scan option is gone and HP Scan doesnt work either).
    Solutions please!
    Solved...

    Hello @caking1s,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I understand since doing the Mac update from 10.9 to 10.10 now you are unable to scan with your HP Photosmart 5520.  Please go ahead and follow the steps listed below:
    Scrub/ Uninstall
    • Open the Applications folder > HP or Hewlett Packard folder > HP Uninstaller
    • Click continue, click on one of the printers in the list.
    • * Only do this step if you do not have any other HP Printers. Hold down Control, Option and Command, While holding the three buttons down,
    • Click uninstall.
    Reset Printing System
    1. Click the Apple icon (   ), and then click System Preferences.
    2. In the Hardware section, click Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan  dialog box opens.
    3. Right-click (or  Ctrl  +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…
    4. Click OK to confirm the reset.
    5. Type the correct Name and Password.
    6. Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected
Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol..
    Repair Disk Permissions
1.On the Dock, click Applications, and then click Utilities.
    2.Double-click Disk Utility.
3.Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
4.Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.
5.Once the repair is complete, restart the computer.
Restart the printer. Now you can download and install the printer software and install it. Click on the link below to begin the download and follow the on screen instructions:

I hope this helps, please let me know the outcome!

  • Hp photosmart 5520 scan to email error message

I can send from my laptop to the printer and it prints no problem
When I try to scan from my printer to my email I get Error Message 901 cannot connect to server.
It has worked fine until today.

     Hello catmandoo and adrastos,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums.  I understand that each of you is getting an error message when trying to use the scan to email feature of your Photosmart 5520 printer.
There are several steps I would like you to try please.
    Please turn off your printer.
Please turn off your router.  If your router doesn’t have an on/off switch, please unplug the power cord from the router.
After waiting a full 60 seconds please turn on your router (or plug it back in).
After the router has completed its startup routine please turn on your printer.
After the printer has completed its startup routine, please test the scan to email feature.  If it works there no need to continue with any further trouble shooting steps.
Please set a manual IP address and manual DNS servers for the printer. I have included a link to another post with the steps, including screen shots on how to do this.   Don’t worry that the screen shots show a Photosmart 7510 printer, the steps are the same.
Please test the scan to email feature.  If it works there no need to continue with any further trouble shooting steps.
Please call HP’s Cloud Services at 1-855-785-2777 if you live in the USA/Canada region. If you live outside the USA/Canada region please click here to find the Technical Support number for your country/region.

  • After the new 10.9.2 Maverick upgrade, my Photosmart C4480 3 in 1 printer can not scan and save the file to desktop or documents.  You can only see the image in the print preview area. Does anyone know how to fix this or when a fix will be out?

After Aple support downloaded the new 10.9.2 Maverick upgrade on my MacBook Air, my Photosmart C4480 3 in 1 printer can not scan a document and load the file on to my desktop or document file. (You can see the doc image in the preview but it doesn't save it.) Does anyone know an Apple fix for this or when the fix will be out?  After hours of trying reloading, and the usual fixes, etc. Apple told me to call HP, and HP told me they don't support Mac.  It does not seem honorable of Apple to put out an upgrade and not tell people it will destroy their scanning ability, and that the only thing to do is to buy another printer/scanner.

Have you tried using Applications/Image Capture to scan.
