I recently upgraded to Lion. I can no longer search on the servers I connect to. I used to be able to do this on Leopard and Snow Leopard.
The servers are Windows servers and they are virtual servers.

Spotlight Doesn't Search Servers anymore?

Spotlight used to search servers attached to my computer such as backup drives I'd mount here at work but lately no matter what you search for on the drive it can't find. It comes back empty handed. What is the story here? is it a bug or something else i'm not aware of?

Same problem but only on one share out of three.
I just setup a OS X Server (10.5.2), standard (easy) configuration. Clients are 10.5.2 as well. Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary.
But spotlight searches are ONLY working on one out of the three shares! I tried deleting the Spotligt database (via Cocktail) and rebuilding but it didn't help.
The something strange happened! One folder on one of the non-indexed shares was indexed but nothing else. Almost as if Spotlight had done a little bit of work and then crashed. But the md-processes are still running. Strange...
I've tried looking for Spotlight log messages but haven't had any luck...
Amazing that such a central piece of OS X Server can be so hard to diagnose. After searching the forums I understand that I'm not the only one with problems.

Can't search for words anymore after saving PDFs in Preview

Hi everyone,
I would love to use Preview for my day-to-day use of previewing PDFs + highlighting + setting annotations. However, once I have saved the pdf with Preview I can not search for words anymore. If I search for one letter only, I would get cryptic hits like "7;%! 2%8%P%8!".
I am not sure, but I guess when preview saves the pdf using a Quartz PDF context, something happens with the index, or the underlying the font structuring.
Does anyone have had experience with these kinds of troubles?

Hi, thanks for answering quickly, and the heads up on that other thread.
It undoubtedly has to do with the annotations or mark ups (the last, in my case).
In the linked-to thread they end by suggesting that it's because it's has "commenting not allowed" when you see it
using Adobe Reader, File > Properties > Security says Commenting: Not Allowed.
However, some documents with "commenting not allowed set in Adobe Reader I can highlight or annotate fine, without it messing up after saving.
Besides, any document I save as pdf even from Word, will say commenting not allowed in Adobe Reader. So if even my own documents are not highlight- or annotate-able without garbling the text, what documents would these functions be for, then?
I think what somebody mentioned in the other thread about character encodings hold some truth, I see it in documents in Danish with æ ø and å (however, not all!), but not in English-only docs (yet. Have any of you?).

I can't search for books or authors on my iphone 6. It says no results found every time. Is there some setting I may have wrong? I have been using my kindle app instead.

I can't search for book or authors in ibooks. When I search an author or book and click on it a message that says not results found comes up. Even if I try to look up something popular like Dracula or Twilight. Is there some setting I should have clicked? It won't find or download any books at all anymore. This started about a month ago. I have been using my Kindle app instead.

I see that you are having issues with your connection to the iBooks Store. Here is an article with some troubleshooting steps that will be relevant to your issue, even though the article was written for issues with the iTunes Store:
Troubleshoot issues on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store:
Make sure your date, time, and time zone are correct in Settings > General > Date & Time.
Note: Time Zone may list another city in your time zone.
Make sure that your iOS software is up to date by tapping Settings > General > Software Update(iOS 5 or later) or connecting your iOS device to iTunes and clicking Check for Update on your device's Summary page.
Check and verify that you're in range of a Wi-Fi router or base station. If you're on a device with cellular service, make sure that cellular data is turned on from Settings > General > Cellular.
Note: If connected to cellular data, larger items may not download. You may need to connect to Wi-Fi to download apps, videos, and podcasts.
Make sure that you have an active Internet connection. You can check the user guide for your device for help with connecting to the Internet.
Make sure that other devices (portable computers, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the Internet.
Try resetting (turning off and then on again) your Wi-Fi router.

How can I search for invisible files?

When I was using OS 10.3.x I could search for .DS_Store and .localized files (or any other invisible file) in the finder, using Search. But since I've been using OS 10.4.x I can't seem to find those particular files in the Search window anymore.
In both OS 10.3.x and 10.4.x I will set the search options to 'Visibility' -> 'Visible or Invisible'. But only 10.3.x will find invisible .DS_Store and .localized files, 10.4.x will not bring them up.
I know the files are there, I can make them visible with utilities like Invisibility Toggler. But that involves me manually going through each folder and deleting the invisible files one at a time. Is there any way to make those invisible files show up in the Search window?

Spotlight doesn't find invisibles very well and it won't find anything in the System folder. Instead download the freeware search program Easy Find - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

Is Verizon not allowing connections to alternate DNS servers anymore?

Last night I ran a DNS benchmark test, and a notice popped up saying my ISP was intercepting and redirecting all outgoing DNS requests. I've been using OpenDNS for a year now without any problems, then I found out last night I am not connecting to their servers, so I tried Googles servers, no luck there either.
I called tech support (several times) and no one could give me a straight answer to my question: Is Verizon not allowing connections to alternate DNS servers anymore? I was forced to switch back to Verizon servers, not happy about that.
Can someone please answer my question? Thanks.

I'm on FiOS and I've got no issues using OpenDNS. I have the Quantum router set to use it. Works fine.
I've manually changed DNS on my computer to google's servers. No problems with this, either.

Can't Install iTunes ANYMORE!!!!

Okay, I had iTunes 7.1.1.5 installed on my computer and it was working fine, but I decided to update and I can't get iTunes 7.2 to install. I've NEVER had this problem with any version.
I keep getting this message:
"THE SYSTEM CANNOT OPEN THE DEVICE OR FILE SPECIFIED"
I shut down Zone Alarm, TrendMicro and it still won't install. But I was able to get the latest Firefox to install. I can't get Safari for Windows to install either. I can't even reinstall iTunes 7.1.1.5 because I get the same message.
Help???

Well, I spent 8 hours trying to fix this problem and now I'm SCREWED!!! I tried uninstalling Zone Alarm and Trend Micro PC-cillin and iTunes still won't install. I uninstalled Spy Sweeper and Ad-Aware and still nothing. Yet, I was able to reinstall Zone Alarm, Firefox, Ad-Aware. But then I couldn't reinstall Trend Micro PC-cillin 2007 because it said the same thing "THE SYSTEM CANNOT OPEN THE DEVICE OR FILE SPECIFIED." I was able to reinstall the 2006 version of PC-cillin. But it's all screwed up now.
I just got that really sick feeling in my stomach. I mean, I was using iTunes 7.1.1.5 Monday afternoon, and all because I uninstalled it to upgrade it's like a NIGHTMARE. Everything was fine and now I feel bad. I want to cry. My Firefox is screwed up now. I have to approve web pages like 10 times before they load now. That stupid Tren Micro box keeps popping up asking for Firefox approval for every single page now. I NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. And all because I removed iTunes and it wouldn't install. I thought it was having a conflict with with my AntiVirus or Firewall. MISTAKE!!!
This is like Deja Vu. Because right before iTunes 7.0 was released last year all kinds of BS went down. Like my QuickTime stopped working and so I uninstalled it and couldn't get it to reinstall for like 3 days. Therefore, I couldn't use iTunes. And that's what I did for like 3 days, install and uninstall various programs. Search and delete. And this was right before the widespread, massive 7.0 meltdown. Luckily I avoided the latter. But here I am again.

Why is my playlist not updating as i type in the search window anymore?

why is my playlist not updating to reflect what i type on the search window anymore? just searches in the same window as you type i want it to reflect and show location on my plylist instead as it did before.

I have code within the FLA, but I am also using .as files (with classes and such). The code does not update when I try to use it, or will not run. Currently I am getting 4 errors, all of which were related to syntax and have been fixed. I know this because I hit the check mark button at the top of code field and it confirmed that all syntax is okay. I believe the error may be due to a lack of understanding on my part regarding the source path and document classes.
For example: I am using the code found here: http://www.learningactionscript3.com/download/45/ in the particle_system folder. My .as files and SWF are set up exactly the same as theirs, the example, but I can run theirs without error and mine with a perpetual 4 errors at runtime no matter how I fix it. I have made sure that the source path leads to the .as files being used ("Particle" and "ParticleDemo"), and confirmed that it should work by hitting the check mark next to the Document Class under Advanced ActionScript 3.0 Settings.
Edit: So in short, yes, I run the SWF and my code not update. If I close out of Flash and open it up again with the same SWF and .as files, then it works. However, this is an extremely inefficient thing to do. I am thinking that maybe downgrading down to CS5 may do the trick, but not sure if it's worth the time.

I did not format the drive. I was using it as purchased to do backups for a while. After the corporate backup system was working correctly again I was using the disk at home for my homevideos. Since the corporate backup was running correctly for ten days in a row, I have decided to delete those backupfiles on the usb drive. Each backup was a folder consisting of almost 30GB data, mirroring the servers harddrive which is running on windows xp. After I have deleted those folders, only the video files remaind and I could not open the drive on the macmini anymore.

N97: Can't edit bookmarks anymore

I was able to edit my bookmarks up to last week but now I can not edit then anymore and I can not recall what I had made (wrong?) that may lead to such behavior.
Any suggestion how to recover the Edit capability ?

Hi, I don't think the problem is you browser version, Try first soft reset and clearing cache and then hard reset if this doesn't work. N97 does have memory issues ( I'm one of it's biggest fans, but phone memory is really too small).
Also use the user search feature at the top of the page to find solutions, most 'problems ' have been discussed before, and once you've sorted your memory management, the N97 becomes a really good machine. A little research makes the whole experience much better.

Can't search for Delegates

Hi all,
I'm experiencing some difficulties in trying to add delegates to calenders. We have a small office setup here with about 15 computers (all running Leopard 10.5.6) and we're running OSX Leopard Server 10.5.6 with iCal server running. Basically, when I want to delegate a Calender to another client (in preferences>accounts>delegation), when I type in the name of an account, iCal says that it can't find the account. We were able to do this before, but I believe since we've added a new router to our topology, a certain port needs to be opened so that our iCal accounts can be searched through the Manage Account Access window. Suspecting this, I opened up TCP port 80 in our router which is responsible for iCal publishing, but with no success. Also to note, all the accounts that have been delegated already are functioning just fine, it's just that if i want to delegate anymore calenders to different users that I can't seem to find the appropriate account.
Any help would be much appreciated.

On each client machine launch the Directory Utility app from the /Applications/Utilities folder. Click the padlock button (bottom-left corner) and provide an admin password. Then use the + button to add a new directory server. Enter the hostname of your directory server (which is probably the same as your OS X server). Click OK - that should be it.

Can't search for a song on playlist after upgrading to ios7

Help! I assume i am not the only one.. In the past i was able to go to music - playlist - go to a certain playlist i have - and than search in the playlist for a song. I can't do that anymor. I can search in the main list, i can search within the artist page, the songs page and the albums. even in tha main playlists page i can but i can't search when i am in a playlist page.

There currently is no "search" function on the iPod Touch. This is one of my biggest pet peeves--why did Apple choose to omit search capabilities on the Touch, especially where there's now an on-screen keyboard??
Search would be very helpful... While the alphabet scroll on the right side when in Songs, Albums, Artists views is GREAT, what if I want to find an all songs on which an artist was involved--including COLLABORATIONS? (Example: scrolling to "N" will allow me to find songs BY "Notorious B.I.G.," but won't find roughly 10 other tracks on my iPod where Biggie is "featured.")

I can't search through my Purchased content in the iOS 6 App Store.

In iOS 5 I could go to the Purchased area and push down for a search bar to show up. But in iOS 6 there is nothing there.
I clean out room on my iPhone with the knowledge that if I really need this app later that I can just reinstall it. Now that is going to be a hassle scrolling through all my bought app's. Sometimes I can't remember the name of something I had once had and if I could sort them into categories that would be helpful as well. But the main point is that I can't search, also when I do find something there and I press it it just shows like the version information. It use to take me to the app page so I can make sure that was what I was looking for. I have a lot of photo app's and I can not be expected to know what everyone of those do.

Yup, the new itunes is worthless unless every song you have is in your itunes library as well. (unless you buy every song from itunes this is simply impossible) Apparently Apple threw away the feature in an effort to force everyone to purchase their media through itunes. This is probably the worst idea about the new Itunes, the only way to go back is to restore your computer to a time before you downloaded the new version, otherwise wait and hope the next version in a year or so will have it.
