Can't see added internal or external drives?

I have an XPS-8500, Windows 7 / 64bit with a 2TB internal plus 30GB SSD.  I have had some signs of the internal hard drive having problems.  I have tried to add additional drives, ( internal Seagate 500gb, external WD My Book 3TB ) to do backup up can't get the computer to see either of these.  Device manager see's them but can't get a drive letter assigned.  Device manager also reports "Other Devices" "unknown device".   With this combo, ( internal plus ssd ), does that mean I cannot add any other drives.  I was told on another forum that the drives are only seen on port 0 & 1??  I have tried tools like DISKPART and Disk Manager to format and use the New Volume Wizard but they always time out with an error:
"The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date"
Any help would be appreciated.
My Bios says RAID
Sata0/Port0        Main drive ( c: )
Sata1/Port5        DVD Samsung 224
Sata2/Port2        My New Drive, 500 gb seagate
Sata3/Port3        DVD Samsung 203b
MSata1/Port1     Samsung SSD 32G

Thanks for all the suggestions, I learned a lot of stuff between various forums but in the end I simply bite the bullet and did a system recovery using the disks I made upon purchase of the machine a few years back.  I felt I could not get around that I had some OS system files that were corrupted ( says the output of scannow ).  The main hardrive was failing and getting worse on each use.  I did not have a system repair disk ..... and the list goes on and on.
After the restore, I reloaded all my software, downloaded hundreds of MS Updates.  Had to re-configure the bios and set the ssd for raid and caching with the new drive accelerated.   The new drive is only 500gb versus the oem 2 TB, but I'll pick up something else soon.  The WD 3TB discovers.  I have it partitioned into 2,  1.5 TB partitions.
Everything is functioning fine.  I created a system repair disk.  I have scheduled backups and will be creating a system image.  Hard drives do not last forever, but this time I will be prepared ( lesson learned ).

  • Can't see Tiger installer in external drive

I want to reinstall Tiger from the disk after erasing my startup drive - on my G4, which has a broken superdrive.
Right now I have Tiger installed and when I insert the Panther installer in the external drive and restart, I can choose to boot from the Panther install disk. However, when I insert the Tiger install disk, I can't see it in the external drive. (I only inserted the Panther disk as a test.)
The Tiger install disk is black with a gray X.
Does anyone know why I might be able to boot from the Panther installer but not the Tiger installer?
    Thank you,
    Debbie

I put the Tiger DVD in the iMac and started in Target Mode - I see the firewire icon on the screen. I booted the G4 with the Option key held down, but I just saw the G4 startup disk and back and forward arrows.
When I chose the forward arrow, this is what I saw:
    Default Catch
    code 300 at
    %SPRO: ff8494a0
    %SRRI:0000b030
    Paraphrasing now:
    Welcome to Open Firmware
Type mac-boot return to continue booting
I tried typing mac-boot return, but got another version of the same screen.

  • Can't See All Folders of External Drive on Network

I recently got my first Mac - a beautiful MacBook, which I love. I switched from a WinXP system. I have loads of photos and iPod videos on an external drive (fairly new), and music on a separate external drive (both are USB). Both are connected to a desktop G5 system in one room of my house, and we're using a wireless network to see everything.
My Mac's iTunes sees all the music fine, so that's not a problem. However, the other drive... it's seen, and I can get to the pictures (normal pix from my cameras), but the Mixed Media folder, which contains the iPod videos, appears as that grey, glass-tv-screen-looking icon and won't let me do anything with them - On one hand, I want to import my iPod videos to my new iTunes library, and on the other hand, I want to be able to manage my photos on the Windows side (using Parallels) because since I was a WinXP user all these years, I have Photoshop for Windows. But I need my iPod vids. Anyone know what I need to do to fix this?

    Do you mean like this?
I'm not an expert on this but I get these files now and again with my job where clients upload fonts to our FTP from a PC. These are files that OS X doesn't recognize or doesn't have the software to open it. It's probably because your drive was formatted for PC. Do the iPod video files have a file extension at the end of the filenames such as .mp4 or .mpeg (or whatever the correct extension is for iPod video, mp4 I think)? If not and in my experience, adding the correct extension to the file usually enables OS X to recognise and open the file. Try it with one of your files and see if it opens.

  • Can't see my 3TB lacie external drive (for Time Machine)

since upgrading to Yosemite my Time Machine backup won't operate, says the drive is Read Only.
Don't see where I can change this, I have verified and run repair and looks good but still no Time Machine backups will function, last successful one was with Mavericks before moving to Yosemite.
It is a Lacie 3TB external drive, worked flawlessly in Mavericks.
I can't see it in the Finder , but I know computer communicates with it because I could run Disk Utility and see the drive.

I restarted the computer and then Time Machine backup worked.

  • IMovie 11 can't "see" events library on external drive

I can't reconnect iMovie with my Events Folder. I was successfully using iMovie 11 with the Events and Projects foldersstored on an external drive (for space reasons.) Then I slipped up trying to back up the Events library in Dropbox (I forgot to hold down the Alt. key to make it copy, instead of moving the folder.) I immediately shifted it back and cancelled the operation. But now iMovie can't "see" the Events library and I get the little yellow triangle on the projects showing it can't locate the source files.
I'm using the blue iMovie browser setting that shows all files and I can see, and access, the Events folder on the external drive through the Mac Finder. The Events folder is sitting on the top level of my external drive. I've tried everything I can think of. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I dont have any answers for you, but I do have the same problem as you on my brand new mac, which is using an iPhoto library from my old Mac. I have tried rebuilding the iPhoto database but it doesnt help.  iMovie is getting stuck on trying to create the thumbnails from iPhoto.  It says "the movie file "clipXXXXX cannot be found, without this file, the movie cannot play properly. "  Even though that file exists in the iPhoto library masters folder.  It offers to allow me to cancel or seach, and when I search to it, the iPhoto library is grayed out as an option to search in.  I also tried to manually move the file out of the iPhoto library to the Movies directory, but that doesnt help either.

  • Can't see or recognize my external drive?

I've installed OSX 10.3.9 on top of a completely updated 9.2.2 and the OSX is working fine. The internal hard drive was partitioned into 6 or 7 different drives when I was using 9.2. I loaded 10.3.9 onto one of the partitions and it recognizes all of the rest of them.
The external hard drive was loaded with files back when I was using 9.2 and now I can't get the drive to be recognized. Should I restart the computer using 9.2 somehow, retransfer all of the files to the partitions on the internal drive and then reformat the external hard drive so that OSX recognizes it? I had the file format on the external drive in what I thought was the latest format, the HSF++or whatever. I can't remember what it was now but I thought that it was in compliance with OSX. Also, I'm really not sure eexactly how to shift in and out of classic or if OSX just decides depending on which application that I launch??

    diablowilnet:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
6 or 7 partitions? Why so many? Also, is your external HDD Firewire or USB. That is important because you cannot boot a PPC Mac from a USB device.
My hunch is that it might be best to move all the files to the internal and then reformat and repartition. However, if you tell me what your objective is, I may be able to make suggestions as to the options for partitioning your HDD for greatest functionality.
Here are some directions for formatting the external HDD:
    Formatting/Partitioning a HDD
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
Go to the Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel.
Select number of partition in pulldown menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Check install Mac OS 9 Drivers if necessary
    Repeat this for each partition
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Select the a volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    Select on Security Options button.
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Click OK.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
Pllease do post back with further questions, comments, or an update on your progress.
    Good luck.

  • I can´t see my "time machina external drive" in windows

Hi, I used to have my itunes lybrary in my external drive so I can hear my music both when I´m working in the Mac Os or the Windows Os. I install de 10.5 and start using the time machine (prior I back up de audio file and re recorder to the new formated external drive). The thing it´s that know in windows mode I can´t se or access my usb hd.
Anyone knows how can I do to use time machine but still continue to use this hd in windows?
    Thanks

you formatted the drive in HFS+ format, which Windows doesn't recognize..
to get a workaround, partition the drive (make sure 1 partition is greater than or equal to your Mac's HDD) into 2 and format the one which is greater or equal to yr mac's HDD in HFS+ format, while the other one in FAT32 format...
then, keep your music in the FAT32 partition...
or, install MacDrive (not free) and you can start browsing your HFS+ partition...

Leopard.  Did a full restore from Time Machine.  Now I can't access my other internal and external drives.  I get the following error: The folder “Capture Video” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.  I have repaired permissions pn the main harddrive.  When I try too click on a disk I get the previously stated error.  I can't even open up information to see what permission/access there is.  It simply will not let me see the content.  It shows the content of my main hard drive when I have clicked the other harddrive's name.

    Solved:

  • Is it possible to make OSX see the internal and external HDD's as one large drive?

Is it possible to make OSX see the internal and external HDD's as one large drive? For instance, hypothetically, could I have a Mac Mini Server with 2TB of internal storage and 2 external 4TB Thunderbolt HDD's, and make the OS see them all as one large 10TB drive?

Yes it is possible to do this, but this is not recommended since a disconnection of the external drives would lead to a destabilized system. Its best to do this only with internal drives, or secondarily with only external drives that are set up separately from the boot drive.
However, if you do wish to do this then you can combine any local set of volumes into one large "spanned" hard drive using Apple's CoreStorage volume management service. It does take a few steps to set up and requires use of the Terminal and Disk Utility. Here is a tutorial on how to do this: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57550128-263/how-to-make-a-custom-corestora ge-drive-in-os-x/

I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

Can i add a normal usb driver?
Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network?
The drive will appear as a shared network drive, like the Time Capsule.
It will work as fast than time capsule?
No, the drive will operate at about half or 50% of the speed of the Time Capsule.

My iMac does not see the new Toshiba external drive in Finder or Disk Utility.  How can I get it to see the drive?

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Recovery mode and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive is malfunctioning.

All I can suggest is that you open that file on the MBA and save it as a new file, then see if you can open the new one on the iMac.

  • How Can I Keep Music on an External Drive?

I've dealt with this issue before and asked questions about it, but I STILL don't understand how iTunes works when it comes to its "Library" "Media Folder" etc.
Can anyone break it down for me exactly how it all works? Is there a good resource to explain it?
The basic problem I have is the same one that many people have: I keep my actual music on an external hard drive. However, if I launch iTunes when that hard drive isn't plugged in, iTunes somehow changes so that all my music vanishes no matter what I do. Plugging in my hard drive doesn't help. iTunes has created a new Library that contains a list of all my music but with no idea where that music is. I try to tell iTunes where that music is, but nothing works.
You'd think an easy fix would be to always plug in the hard drive first. However, even that doesn't help. iTunes will sometimes not see that hard drive when it is plugged in, and I have no way to predict when it sees the drive and when it doesn't. I start adding new music or podcasts, and it might all be being added to some new library iTunes created and I'm totally lost once again.
On the Preferences/Advanced tab there is the option to change your Media Folder location, but that doesn't work. My music is on the external hard drive, but there is no Media Folder there. The iTunes Media Folder is here: My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
I've read that you can hold down the Shift key when you launch iTunes and then you get the option to "Choose Library" or "Create Library." The idea is that iTunes has created a new empty Library and that you just have to select your old Library to get things back to normal. However, there is only ever one Library file listed. There is no new one and old one to select from. There is no Library file on the external drive, either. So I have no idea what I'm looking for.
If I choose "Create Library", it then asks me for a "Folder name". I don't know what that is, either. I thought I'd just have to give my new Library a name. The more I try to deal with this issue, the more confused I get.
To further muddy the waters, under the "General" tab on the iTunes preferences page, it lists my library as "Doug's Library", the name I gave it long ago. However, the option to choose "Doug's Library" never comes up. I've never seen a file with that name or a Library with that name. So what is that all about?
I've used Windows Explorer to go into the iTunes folder to see what files are there, and then it gets more confusing. There is a file called "iTunes Library" and a second file called "iTunes Music Library." Why does the music have a second Library file?
Any suggestions or guidance? There has to be a way to cut through all this confusion. I've had so many problems with iTunes along these lines that I've literally stopped using it to listen to music. It's just not worth the hassle. I spend far more hours trying "fix" iTunes than listening to music with it.
Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.
    Doug

I do the same thing as you do...
My music is on an external drive as to not use up gigabytes of storage that need not be used for media.
There are a couple basic principles to iTunes that I believe you should know.
    1. iTunes is not a media storage program. It does not store your media "in iTunes". It simply is an organization tool for your media already on a hard disk.
    2. As iTunes is not a storage mechanism, it has no way to "know" whether or not the media that is listed is actually there. This is where the "design" of iTunes comes into play.
I like to think of iTunes as a bread-crumb trail. The "music" in iTunes, isn't actually there. The bread crumb is the location on the external hard drive.
If that bread crumb trail disappears (in this case the external drive you use). If said external drive is not plugged in, that bread crumb trail is not able to be followed. iTunes is "lost" and unable to find the media. The only way to remedy this is to place the media on your local drive.
To address your issue of the library. If you hold down shift, you can select your library on your external drive. It will be a file with an .itl extension. The folder name will be your external drive.
I go into edit > preferences > advanced and set my library to the correct location. Make sure you check the box "Copy to iTunes Folder when importing" (or whatever it says).
You can't fix the issue of iTunes not seeing the media if your drive is unplugged unless you physically move the content to your OS HDD...Or any other HDD you use.

  • How do I Move Events from an Internal to External drive?

    Hello,
I am trying to move events on my internal drive to my new external drive. Everything is set up and I see the external drive, but after reading other posts and replies it seems I can't just move the files from the internal to external drive by dragging and dropping using finder.
Can anyone give some guidance on how I do this so i don't have to reload all my videos on the external drive.
Also, when they are moved over, will i see the external drive when I open iMovie, or do I ahve to do something to see it in my Events Library.
    Any help be be appreciated.

Can anyone give some guidance on how I do this so i don't have to reload all my videos on the external drive.
Best approach is to import files directly to the external drive during the initial import process by selecting the appropriate drive in the import window. However, for Events already stores, here is A QUICKIE VIDEO TUTORIAL.
Also, when they are moved over, will i see the external drive when I open iMovie, or do I ahve to do something to see it in my Events Library.
You must activate the "external drive" icon in iMovie '08 to make your external drives visible in the Event Library list. (I.e. Press the icon to the right of the "Event Library" title and to the left of the actual Event Window.) Sorry, answered your e-mail message before seeing the second question here.
