Can't see Backups

I am having trouble seeing my backups on the usb drive.
In the past if I opened R+R then clicked view backups I would see "no backups found"
I could trick it by starting the restore process, selecting usb drive (up they come), then backing out.
From there I could make a named backup, and I wouldn't be forced into the "primary" backup save.
My problem now is that I can see all the backups in "view backups", but when I start the restore process and  select the usb drive nothing registers.  I can't select a backup to restore to, and thus can't "continue".
I am running R+R 4.20, and I have both backed up and restored sucessfully in the past.
But I know that If I now can't see the backups in the R+R Restore sequence, then i will be unable to restore if necessary.
Thanks for anyone who can offer help

To tie a ribbin on this, here's the setting that has caused invisible backups on a few machines.  A friend's T61 showed no backups until he set this to max.
I'm not saying this is what is causing your issues.  In the cases I've seen, the backups were invisible in R&R during a backup operation, not a restore.
Anyway, for posterity, here it is.

  • Can't see backup library after accidentally deleting library

In trying to free up some hard drive space - it was almost empty - I accidentally deleted my entire iPhoto Library, emptying it from the trash. Thankfully I do back up to an external hard drive, and have moved the backed up library back to my Pictures folder. However, I cannot see the library in iPhoto, even when i Option-start the app and "Choose" that library. I only get 95 photos that i have imported since the accidental deletion and moved to that back up folder after re-copying it.
Any ideas why I can't see the Library in iPhoto even after choosing it? I'm not going to have to go through and import every photo am I? (I hope not as they are stored by year/month/day in hundreds of folders).
I would also like to know how to get this to work as I have ordered a new iMac today, and will want to choose the same Library on it too.
    Thanks.

    HI roger,
Navigate through the iPhoto Library folder and see if all your photos are in there. I just want to make sure that the backup library does indeed have your photos in there. If it does, and iPhoto still can't see your library, maybe a data file got messed up.
In that case, you can create a new library and import from the old very easily by following the next instructions below.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "import" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • Time Machine - can't see backups

I have a 1T LaCie attched via USB and have been using since Sept 2008 - when i enter TM all I can see is back ups for Sept & Oct 2008, but nothing since. It seems to be backing up on a regular basis, and I get no warning messages. Can I just delete the backup file on the LaCie and start over if I don't care about files prior to what is on my HD now?

So, thanks to a rotten power supply I have a freshly dead 17.5 month old 1 TB Time Capsule which is out of warranty. To try and preserve the utility of my prior Time Machine backups and what seems to be a perfectly good 1 TB HD, I bought a 3.5" SATA enclosure with USB 2.0 and pulled the drive out of the TC and put it in the HDD enclosure. Now following Pondini's Tip #17 in the FAQ I can browse to my prior backups.
The big question is: How can I get Time Machine use the same HD from the Time Capsule (now attached by USB instead of Ethernet) to pick up where it left off making further incremental backups as it had been making for 1.5 years up until the TC's power supply died? I'd like to not have to back the whole thing up separately again and bifurcate the backups.
In Finder I can see a 104.93 GB file titled:
Mjmckay's Mac Mini_0016cba344dd.sparsebundle and dated the date I started using the TC.
Using the Disk Utility I can also see the name and info of the HD as follows:

I'm sure there's information here which no one needs to answer my question, and other info I haven't provided.
Right now, TM doesn't see any oldest or latest backups
Are there settings I can change to get it to seamlessly pick up? I think I have seen some references in the user forums to a distinction made by Time Machine between backing up to a Time Capsule (wherein maybe TC is the only "easy" Network Attached Storage destination) with "sparsebundle" files and the way Time Machine backs up to direct, USB 2.0, direct-attached external hard drives (which is what my Time Capsule HD has now become). Or is that the problem at all?
    Any one have suggestions?

  • Restoring Backed Up Contacts Locally . . .Can't See Backup Files

    Hey,
i have backed up my BB Messenger contacts locally on the device, but for some reason i cannot restore them, they simply don't show up when i browse to the directory where they are stored.
If i look for them while my BB is connected to my computer and browse using windows explorer, i can see them sitting there just fine.
    Any ideas? Thanks.
    Mike

Disconnect your device from the USB and look again.
If you are connected to the USB using Mass Storage Mode, your media card is not usable from within the device.

  • Rescue & Recovery can't see backups any more

Hi!  (new here, so hello all!)
I have been using R&R on my T420 (Windows 7, 64-bit) for a while now, carefully backing up my C:\ to an external USB drive every few weeks, or when I install something major.  I had 29 backups on the disk.  The disk is a 2TB disk with around 1.5TB still available.  It can be read through Windows when I use Explorer and shows up in autorun, etc. when it's plugged in.
However, when I run R&R (it's currently v4.5), it says that no backups are found on the external USB drive... and wants to start again at "Base" system level.
Any idea what would cause this?  I'm not sure if R&R got updated recently with System Update, but TVSU 5.0 isn't working for me, so I've just uninstalled it (as per another thread in the forum) and I'm just going to install 4.3 again.
    Any thoughts would be welcome.
    Thanks,
    Mohit.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks for being so patient with me.
    Step - A
    1. Yes, I can see RRBackups in C, D and E and also on my recovery USB HD.
    2. When I change permissions and go into the folder on C: it has a few files, but from around Mar 2012.
    3. When I do the same for R: (ext USB), it has the folders for C and Q, etc. and C has backups 0 - 16 (I just realized that I had skipped numbers, so I don't have 29, but 17 backups over the past 6 months) <-- this shoud mean that the base and incrementals are all on R:
    Step - B
    1. I think I started with RNR 4.3 because I got the laptop in Jan 2012 (much after 4.5 release - Nov 2011)... I have never uninstalled RNR or re-installed it, so if TVSU doesn't update it, it should have been 4.5 from the start.  I have 4.50.0025.00
    2. RNR settings are pointing to USB because I always use the "Change schedule, manage backups, ..." option and then give the backup a name and confirm "save backups to external usb drive" before starting back-up
Finally the rather long log dump from the log (just the current session)

  • New hd can't see backup on time capsule

I just upgraded my wifes macbook 2007 or 2008 with a new hard drive.  I had her old on backed up on my time machine and when I tried to retore it only see my macbook pro backup and not hers.  I see both backups on the drive, so Its there, but it wont recognize on her machine.
    Any help would be good.
    Her specs are:
snow leopard but will be lion once I get it up and running
just upgraded to 500 gig HD and 4 gig Ram
    Thanks

I presume the upgrade. so called.. was to Yosemite.
With Yosemite it is network wise more akin to a pair of tin cans and a wet string you used as kids for communication.
Effectively you need to start over.
    Reset the TC to factory.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
The TC should now appear in the airport utility as unconfigured TC. You can now do the configuration.
Please do not use Apple recommendations for names.. this is important. Short names no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
eg TCgenx (x can be actual gen for base station name) and TCwifi  (wireless name).
WPA2 Personal password for wireless must be pure alphanumeric mixed case and numbers.. say 8-20 characters.
Once you do this you will need to redirect TM to the new location.
BUT I strongly advise you not to mess your old backup. Rename the computer under sharing in preferences and start a new clean backup.

OS X Yosemite: Time Machine problems

  • Moved Time Machine drive - can't see backup.

I was having trouble with my Time Machine drive, which was connected by USB to my Airport Extreme.  I moved the drive to a USB connector on my MacBook Pro to improve the speed, and after formatting the drive, made a complete, new backup with Time Machine, which took about 8 hours.
Then I moved the drive back to the AirPort and told Time Machine to use it for backup.  Time Machine doesn't see the earlier backup (I can verify that it's there using the Finder) and is now doing another complete backup of my MBP.
What's wrong here?  How can I tell Time Machine to use the backup it made yesterday instead of starting over?
    Walt

Actually, Tech Support told me that they support only Apple Time Capsules connected to the Air Port Extreme.  They most certainly do NOT support using Seagate drives such the ones I have been using successfully for over three years, on two MBPs.
I firmly believe (but Apple does not want to hear this) that my problem originated with the erratic WIFI connections since I upgraded to Lion, which has been discussed at length in the forums.  Time Machine reported backups failing when the WIFI connection could nto be restored after waking from sleep.
My wife's MBP, running Snow Leopard, is working just fine on the same hardware.
    Walt
EDIT:  I tried "Inheriting" the backup that was made via the direct USB connection, but it still doesn't show up in the TM history.  The tmutil program is interesting - it does distinguish between the "machine_directory" - the backups.backupdb folder that was made by the direct USB backup, and the sparse_bundle file that was created by the AirPort backup.

  • Can't see backups with sparsebundle on external hard drive?

This weekend I moved the external HDD I was using for Time Machine from my Macbook to my wife's iMac.
Previously the iMac was backing up via an AFP share on my MB. Now, Time Machine continues to back up to the iMac sparsebundle on the external HDD, but selecting "Enter Time Machine" shows no backups. If I mount the sparsebundle and then option+click the TM menu and Browse other time machine disks, I can successfully find the backups. I have tried turning TM off and redoing the configuration, but that doesn't seem to change anything. I haven't tried deleting the TimeMachine plist file, however this is probably my next step.
    Has anyone else encountered this?

deleting the plist won't help. this is normal. remote backups are stored inside sparse bundles but directly attached ones are not. they are stored directly on the drive in a folder. there seems to be a bug (?) that when you move a remote backup to be directly attached TM continues backing up to it. however, when you try to enter TM interface the sparse bundle is not mounted because TM does not know it should be mounted it as it is normally not required. so, your options are
    1. keep doing what you've been doing. then to enter TM you'll have to always mount the sparse bundle by hand first. or
    2. reformat the drive and start backups from scratch. no sparse bundle will be created and you won't have this issue anymore.
if you really want to keep the old backups you can restore the sparse bundle to a separate partition on the external drive and use that partition as the TM drive.

  • Album not backing up correctly; can't see backup status in preferences; can't sign out.

I am using PSE 9, currently on the Mac (moved from PSE 9 on PC about two months ago). I have noticed that the last album I added to PSE still has the double-arrow head backup indication next to it, and these pictures indeed are not in my online account. This commonly happened on my PC, in that I would click on the account like in PSE, enter my password, and not matter what it would say it was incorrect. I would then hit 'Sign out', re-enter my credentials with the same password I'd been using, and the system would then start backing up correctly again.
Unfortunately on the Mac, when I hit the 'Sign out' link in the dialog asking for my password (after clicking on my 'Welcome, ...' link in PSE), it does not sign me out - it pauses for 20-30 seconds with spinning color wheel, then simply shows that I'm still connected. If I try to go to Preferences -> Backup, I receive a message that there was a problem and I should re-open preferences later. If I force the backup background process to stop by rt-clicking on the icon in the Mac menu bar, it indeed closes correctly; however, when I re-enable it is PSE under preferences, as soon as I hit the checkbox it tries to connect to my online account, then gives me the same error indicating that I should "... close Preferences and try again."
Can anyone give me some advice as to why a) the backup in PSE 9 seems to eventually fail and need to be disconnected / reconnected or b) why the 'Sign out' link does not work, or why my password is not accepted inside PSE only?

Hello and thanks for the reply.  I have actually been launching the Organizer and PSE directly, rather than through the Welcome Screen.  The issue is that when I hit the link in the Organizer that shows my name, it won't accept my password; in the past I would simply hit 'Sign Out' and then log right back in, and things would be fine.  However, using the 'Sign Out' link does not work - the software hangs for 20-30 seconds, then comes back still showing my account name.  In addition, I've already existed the backup tool in the upper bar on the screen - yet when I try to get it back from Preferences -> Backup/Sync, enabling the checkbox fails with the error I mention above.
I've also tried a complete uninstall and reinstall, and tried to find any preferences files still on the Mac in between and manually trashed them.  I also did an Optimize and Repair on my catalog, both of which completed successfully, but the behavior is still not correct.

  • Can't see backup I want to restore on new MBP.

3 weeks ago I was backing up 3 computers the same way...
PMG5, PBG4 and a 15" MacBook Pro. I changed jobs and sent the MBP to my old employer. I bought a new MBP today and thought I'd simply be able to move my user data over via TC. Alas, after 3-4 hours, it's only offering me the G4 and G5s to restore from. What have I done wrong?

    I forgot to mention...
If I look at TC through finder on the G5, I see the three "sparsebundle" files, including for the MBP.

  • Emails missing from Mail - can't access backups from Time Machine

To my dismay both of my gmail accounts through the mail client will only show me emails from the last 30 days. I went to check gmail through Safari and the same story, I'm locked out of emails from before the last 30 days. This is not only on my Mac, but also on my iPad and iPhone.
I attempted to go into Time Machine and do a restore, but the same thing is happening and I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be. For some reason even when Time Machine pulls up my email backups I can see stuff from every year but 2013 and the beginning of 2014. It starts populating the backup to show me my emails, but nothing appears and I know those emails have to exist somewhere.
Does anyone know if this is some kind of code error that caused this, or if there is anyway to get around it? Having an entire year's worth of emails missing is really problematic for me as you can expect. Does anyone know how to remedy this?

  • Can not see historical data in Time Machine backup

    Hi folks
    First my setup:
       MBP Late2012
       Samsung Evo 840 SSD
external USB 3.0 1TB as TimeMachine HD
       Mac OS X Mavericks
    Now my problem.
After updating to Mavericks I've made a full backup with Time Machine.
Then I swapped the former 500TB HDD to the Samsung Evo 840 500TB.
A clean setup of Mavericks follows.
After that I restored the Backup from Time Machine.
    Everything ok. Til now.
Because everthing works fine in the past, I did not control the Time Machine.
Today I wanna restore a File from my "Pictures" folder.
    So I opened Time Machine.
    Oops.
There I can only see the latest run.
Also in the timeline on the right side the only entries are TODAY and NOW.
I can not scroll into the past.
All windows behind the current window have a black titlebar.
In Mountain lion the titlebars are grey if there is data available
and the title contains the date of the backup.
    What is the problem?
    Is there a bug?
    Did I something wrong?
    Thanx in adv.

  • How can I see a calendar item that was in my backup

I did a full backup at home of my 8330 with BB Desktop Software a week ago.
But I accidentally left my phone in the office and can't retrieve it until Monday.
The data I need is in one calendar entry in the backup. How can I see it? I don't own Outlook or Office.
I can't figure out where to start.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Not easily, as the backups are intended to restore to the BlackBerry device, not be viewed and/or edited on the PC.
Try to find ABC Amber IPD Converter software for your PC. It can read your backup IPD files and save to Excel or another PC file format.

  • Can't see old backups on Time Machine

Originally, I noticed the issue when I went to do a backup and it failed because there was not enough space on the disk. Then I went to see if I could delete old backups.  In Time Machine it shows today and one other backup, 6 days ago.  It should be doing backups regularly.  I have had the iMac and my external drive for years.  I did update to Mavericks OS several months ago.  That is the only change I can think of.  I have seen older backups and used them before now.  Not sure why I can't see them anymore and why it says my disk is full.  Why isn't it deleting the old backups if it's full?
So I guess I have three main questions:
1 Why can't I see the old backups?
2 Why aren't the old files being deleted if it's full?
3 How can it be full if there is only one backup?
    Thanks

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
