Can't see Base Station

After a restart I lost my Airtunes and the Airport Extreme and Express were no longer findable in the Airport Admin. Utility.
I am now connected by Ethernet cable to the Extreme ( usually I connect wirelessly), but still cannot 'see' the base stations.
I can connect to the internet and see my networks: I can call up the base station under the 'other' tab, but without being able to 'see' the base stations, I can't use the Airport Setup assistant to reestablish a connection from my Express to my home network.
I have followed the instructions at http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n106685 and at Point 15 cannot see the Base station whether I configure manually or using DHCP.
I have hard reset both Express and Extreme Base Stations.
I have tried disconnecting the router power for half an hour.
My kids computer has its Airtunes unaffected by all these disruptions.
Any ideas while the machine is on the kitchen table connected via ethernet

This happens to me every morning after the Airport Extreme n has been inactive over the night. I swithch off Airport on my computer (I have the Airport indicator up in the menu bar), wait a couple of seconds and then switch it on again. Airport Utility than recognizes the base station.
However, Airport Utility will not recognize an Airport Express which I have set up in "bridge mode", i.e. it is used only to connect to a printer. For the Airport Utility to find the Airport Express station, I need to do a change on the Airport Extreme n station and then "Update". As the Airport Extreme then restarts, Airport Utility will then also find the Airport Express and I will be able to print.
This is cumbersome, of course, and useless for my kids who have no Admin authority and cannot make changes to the Airport Extreme (I have Access controls installed).
This should get you going but is not the final solution.

  • HT1515 Just installed Airport Express on Mac 10.6.8  Can't see base station.  Hard Reset the Airport.  Rebooted machine.  How can I tell if this is a Mac problem or Airport Express Problem?

I have a Mac 10.6.8.  Just installed Airport Express.  I can't see any base stations.  I did a hard reset on the Airport Express, turned off all devices,  turned them back on.   I see plenty of Airport networks in the neighborhood.  How can I tell if I have a Mac problem or an Airport Express problem?  Airport Express blinks Amber.

Obviously,  I'm still using ethernet to be able to reply to this.
Alright, use the same ethernet cable to plug directly into the airport express. This will FORCE the airport utility to now see it regardless of weak signals & interference. You can set it up that way.
BTW, what is the original intent on the express?

  • Airport Express Can't See Base Station

I have an airport extreme base station that has two computers normally connected to my network wirelessly (iMac G4 and Powerbook G4) which have worked fine for months. After completing an apple security update this evening on both computers the Powerbook G4 did not automatically connect to the network upon restart as it normally does. The iMac G4 started up fine and is how I am posting this note. The powerbook on the toolbar shows the network I want to join but when I select it (and and see the check mark next to it) I still cannot access the internet. When I run the Airport admin utility it cannot see any base stations (despite the iMac sitting 1 foot away and working perfectly). When I manually give it the IP address and password it says "unable to read the configuation of the selected base station." When I try the Airport Setup Assistant it also lists my network as one that I can choose but when I click on the "continue" button it says "unable to establish a network connection" and that my computer could not connect to the internet. Help!!! I have tried every angle I can thing of to get the Powerbook to connect like it did a few hours ago.

I have just discovered the same problem. After downloading the latest security update my Powerbook G4 [10.3.9] can not "see" any base station or express and/or connect to my network. The G5 running 10.4.5 works fine and sees all. Everything had been working just fine before the update then... Have tried all the work arounds I can think of and wasted a great deal of time. Any answers out there?

  • Airport Utility Can't See Base Stations

I am sure this is something simple. I can log onto an Airport Network with my Powerbook just fine but no matter what I do, I cannot "see" any of the base stations on the network. I receive the error message "Airport Utility was unable to find any Apple wireless devices." This happens on at home, at my office, and at my friends' house. Other computers log on without any difficulty.
Both of my computers are using 10.5.2 and have been since February. Airport Utility is v. 5.3.1. Everything was working fine until one morning when I woke up and found that iTunes couldn't find my remote speakers. I had made no changes or updates in the few days before. It just stopped working.
Anyone else had this problem or know what might be the cause?
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I have tried power cycling everything. I also powered things up in different in different order to see if that would solve the problem. It didn't. It just makes no sense that I can be on the network and not see the base station.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Wireless encryption when Admin Utility can't see base station

I am running an iMac G5 circa 2006 and an iBook from 2001. I have an old-school Airport Extreme base station (the one that looks like a little spaceship). The base station is connected to a cable modem. The signal is great, I can get on the Internet no problem, but neither computer recognizes the base station in Airport Admin Utility. No base stations come up, so I can't configure the base station to encrypt my signal.
I tried implementing a WEP through the Sharing tab, but that didn't work. My signal is still unsecured.
    Any suggestions?

There are several 'old-school' AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBS) models. Graphite, Dual Ethernet (Snow), and the current AEBS.
Sorry but that is not quite true.
The graphite AirPort base station (ABS) and Dual Ethernet (aka snow) ABS are NOT AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). They operate at 802.11b.
But... before this week there were 3 different versions of the AEBS. You can see the differences between those in the table at www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1301.html

  • Airport Utility can't "see" base stations after Leopard 10.5.4

After upgrading to Leopard 10.5.4, Airport Utility can't "see" Airport Extreme UFO version and Airport Expresses. But the Expresses are glowing green, so I assume they're working. But if they can't be "seen" when scanned by Airport Utility, they can't be added as speaker options to iTunes.
Have unplugged and re-plugged in power to Airport Extreme and Expresses.
Oddly enough, at one point the sound through my eXpresses would kick in for five seconds and then disconnect for a minute, then play for five, then disconnect for a minute.
This same thing happened when I switched to Leopard.
    Any solutions?

Well what do you know...after a week, it just magically decides to work, without even using Airport Utility.
Boy are these Airports touchy....and unreliable.
I still want to know: What makes these things drop in and out???

  • Can't locate base station using Mac or windows

I just bought a airport extreme to replace my ageing linksys. I set it up exactly per instructions. I got the light to glow green. However, none of my devices can locate the base station on airport  utility.

If you plug the new base station in the password is "public" and you should be able to find it at 192.168.0.1. Open a broswer and type in that address and you should get a login to set it up.
You need to plug into it direct with a cable if you can't sign in to the wireless network.

  • Utility can't find base station

I'm trying to change the security protection on my base station but when I open the Airport Utility, it just scans for a long time and says "can't find base station." The station works fine but the utility can't find it. What should I do?

I've had the same issue for several weeks also. Even reverting back to 7.1.1 I still have the problem. It's an issue for me, as the Airport Disk Utility doesn't recognize my USB disk.
While restarting Aiport Extreme temporarily solves the problem, everytime I shut down my Mac, Airport Utility doesn't recognize my disk when I start up my Mac. Have you found out anything yet?

  • Airport admin can see Base Station, but only via direct ethernet connection

After resetting my snow (dual ethernet) base station, everything went well with the Airport Admin Utility reconfiguration. But after unplugging the ethernet cable between my computer and the base station, I'm not able to detect the base station wirelessly. Searching for "other" networks won't work. I've tried changing passwords, base station names, location names, network names, using the hex password. I hope I'm missing something obvious. Thanks in advance for any help!

Yes, the wireless network name (currently Apple Network xxxxxx), does not appear in the list. My iBook and Snow Leopard iMac cannot detect it, nor can two iPod Touches in the house. Nor can our Wii. All of which used to before all this. All these are able to detect other networks -- basically, all of my neighbors and then some that come and go.
I have not tried bringing the base station to another building. That’s a good idea.
I have tried http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20683 and kept getting stuck at the configuration stage -- where it seems to reset the ABS, but after which the ABS does not appear in the Admin Utility window. Finally, after many, many attempts at a hard reset, I’m almost positive the whole config & software upload took. My only evidence is that with the ABS still connected to my iBook (OS X 14.11 running Admin Utility 4.25) I can finally double click on “Base Station” and see lots of setting options, the correct Apple Airport ID, etc. In other words, as you guessed, I can see “(and, presumably, change) the wireless network name in the AirPort tab of AirPort Admin Utility (the default is something like "Apple Network xxxxxx") when connected via Ethernet.”
What led to this? It all started when I was trying to get our Wii on to our wireless network. But the Wii wouldn’t log on. It gets foggy after that (I’ve tried so many things, I’ve lost track of the initial steps creating the problem). I might have tried changing channels or something from my Snow Leopard computer, having forgotten that my Snow Leopard computer can’t administer my dual ethernet ABS. It’s possible it really started with turning on and off my DSL modem, which forced me to reset my DSL password with ATT.
Come to think of it, that might have been how this all started. After turning my DSL modem on again, ATT wanted me to download special software for me to reset my password. That wasn’t working (whatever it was would never load. But, I found a way to do it online. Otherwise, my browser kept spitting me back to ATTs password creation page.) By the time I went to my iBook to get into my ABS, remembering that was how I needed to tinker with it, to get back to the original Wii issue, I had lost all connections to my ABS.
Until now, where I can at least see the ABS again in the Airport Admin Utility -- via ethernet connection only.

  • My Windows 7 PC can't connect to Internet or see base station but wifi devices can?

I set up my airport extreme a week ago and configured it in my pc. Now my pc won't find the base station and I have no Internet access on my pc but all my wireless devices are fine. I've checked the cable. Please help

Hi - is your PC telling you that a network cable is unplugged or that a webpage cannot be found or both?

  • Can't see Extreme station from mac, but I can from Windows

Hi. I've got an iMac 400 slotloading with OS X 10.2.8 installed.
The version of the AirPort Admin Utility on the mac is 3.1.1. It cannot see the AirPort Extreme station.
My WinXP Pro can see it. It has the AirPort Admin Utility 4.2 installed.
The base station has firmware 5.6. I don't think that the mac 3.1.1 utility can recognize the extreme station any longer because of its firmware. According to the docs, it works with 5.1 firmware.
If I wanted to get the 5.1 firmware and reinstall it, where would I get it? I can't seem to find it in the downloads.
If I install the 5.1 firmware, would my PC admin utiltiy continue to work with the base station?
    Thanks,
    Doug

You only need one computer to configure the Base Station - and since you can easily do this from your PC, you really don't need to be able to do it from your Mac as well. I suggest you stop worrying about this, leave your Base Station running with the current firmware version, and use your PC if you ever need to make a configuration change.
Note that NO Base Station software needs to be installed on the Mac, for the Mac to be able to connect wirelessly to the Base Station. If your Mac is currently unable to establish a wireless connection to the Base Station, you have a different problem - and one that won't be solved by installing the Airport Admin Utility or downgrading firmware on the Base Station. Incidentally - what type of wireless security are you using on the Base Station - WEP or WPA? A base station configured to use WPA security will only be accessible by a Mac running at least MacOS 10.3.

  • Where I can find AirPort Base Station Firmware Update 7.7.3

Support and download pages on apple's portal are giving me run around. Does anyone knows where one can download the AirPort Base Station Firmware Update 7.7.3 ??

No magic, but I had a real weird situation that I have no way to explain. So when I wanted to upgrade using the airport utility which logically should pull 7.7.1 first and then later 7.7.3, neither would work. I restored to factory defaults in the mena time of this original posting, however pull down menu was not showing 7.7.1 rather it was still displaying 7.6.4, hence why I was so eager to get 7.7.3 binary and do manual upgrade. AS I found the code, before I went about manual process I went into my ~/Library/Applications Support/Apple/AirPort directory to check the version.xml file and voila it showed how I do have 7.7.1 running and installed way back , so then I proceeded the manual process I described above and it worked. You are correct definitely because 7.7.1 was already there, but to for me unknown reason it is not showing on the Airport Extreme and in the drop meny I explained/described, however definitely there and clearly reason I was able to do manual upgrade. In the light of my question and wasted exchanges with the previous poster I didn't describe this part because it was irrelevant  as I was only asking how I can get the code. If I had time to deal with the bigger issue here I would ask Apple, ok why my utility was not pulling 7.7.1 or 7.7.3 and why I had to do all of this to finish simple process that should in reality happen in matter of minutes (I do not have check auto weekly for the code not do I like or trust that feature i.e. don't like auto upgrades...I like to see upgrades done, ppl use it, not report issues and then I do my upgrades). Hope this clarifies it further.
Editing /augmenting my response with a comment - I was even contemplating to complain to apple and reseller I got my device year + ago to possibly replace the unit, but now that it all worked out I am happy.

  • Airport Utility does not see base station

    Hello,
I just got an Airport Extreme. I am able to connect to it from mac and pc running vista but I am not able to see the base station from the airport utility on the windows platform. I can see it from the mac. Any ideas why - am I missing something on the windows platform.

Thanks for your answers. I found this answer in a different thread. Once I unchecked CheckPoint VPN software - the base stations now show up in Airport Utility.

    I had same frustrating problem.
I was able finally to restore AirTunes.
    In Local Area Connection Status.Properties
In the "uses the following Items" list,
    Item "Check Point SecuRemote" appears.
This is the VPN CLient that was installed to let me log in to my office network from home.
Uncheck SecuRemote, OK; iTunes Speakers button shows.
Check SecuRemote, OK; iTunes Speakers button disappears.
This looks like a bug in Checkpoint Software.
In your case, something else may be interferring.

  • Can't find Base Station in Airport Admin

I had a perfectly working DSL based wireless network using Airport express, my iMac G4, and a Windows laptop. Then the phone company cut the DSL connection. After it was repaired, I reconnected everything but neither computer would connect to the Internet wirelessly. I can see the network in the pull-down menu from the Airport icon. During troubleshooting, I changed some buttons in the Airport Admin configuration pane and then poof! Airport Admin doesn't "see" the AE base station anymore. Even when I click "other" in the Airport Admin window and type in manually the AE ID number, I get an error message.
I can connect to the internet through a wired Ethernet cable from the DSL router. I have tried resetting the AE multiple times, even back to the factory default settings, to no avail. I even get a green status light from AE. I tried reinstalling the Airport Admin software from my original disc, but it won't install as it is grayed out and says "disabled" Please help.
iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Westell "Wirespeed" DSL router

OK, if it helps anyone else, I solved my problem by: 1. Updating my Airport software. 2. Directly connecting my Airport Express with ethernet cable to my iMac; this finally allowed Airport Admin Utility to communicate with AE and allow update of its configuration. 3. Then I unplugged ethernet cable from iMac and back between AE and DSL router and restarted AE. It works!

  • Airport Express can and can't find Base Station...

...I'll explain: When I am booted in the regular internal boot drive (OS X 10.5.5) my Express finds the Base Station just fine; but, I want to update a boot partition on an external drive which currently has 10.5.2, and when I boot up in THAT partition the Express can't find the Base Station. The only utility on that partition is "Airport Utility" and when I run it no Base Station shows up. Anyone ever experience this? Thanks for any suggestions.
    Nick

Hello -- I solved my problem. While booted up in the OS that WOULD go online, I downloaded the "Airport Utility for Leopard" utility, then copied the installer onto the OS partition that WOULD NOT go online. Then I restarted in the boot partition # 2 (the one that wouldn't go online/ wasn't seeing my AirPort Base Station) and installed the newer utility. Then I ran the utility and, after a few clicks, THIS boot partition finally saw the Base Station and the AirPort Express, and therefore was able to get online. Thanks again for help.
