Can't see blank cds or dvds, no burn options

I recently started organizing my photos from the past year and wanted to burn them to a cd or dvd as an archive. I found that whenever I insert a blank cd or dvd I get music or video options but no burn option, and no icons show up on my desktop. The only way that I have been able to burn media is to create a burn folder and then insert a blank disk. These then show up on my hard drive but don't see visible on my b&w g3 or my husbands non mac pc. All of this is off a clean reinstall of system software and upgrades to 10.4.4

Take a look at your CDs & DVDs System Preferences. What options are specified for what happens when you insert blank CDs or DVDs? If you want to burn disks with files & folders on them, set it to "Open Finder". You will then be prompted to give your disk a name when you put it in. If you get the music option, you'd have to next open iTunes and burn a music CD from iTunes. Mac OS X will reserve a disk like this and not show it in the finder because it thinks you want to open iTunes and burn your music from there.
A DVD burned on a Mac will not be usable in a Windows PC. Because they hold more information, they'll be formatted as a Mac OS Extended format disk. Without some third party software, a Mac formatted disk like this is not readable by a Windows PC. However, a standard data CD burned by the Finder should be. It will be a "hybrid" Mac OS Extended/ISO9660 disk that should be readable by both a Mac and a Windows PC. It's possible the type of CD-R disks you're using don't work well with your PC's optical drive, you might try a different brand. Since the Blue & White G3 was constructed before CD-Rs or DVD±R/RWs were invented, it's likely it may not be able to read those kidns of disks as well.

  • Can't See Blank CDs

I recently reinstalled OS X on my computer. Now I can no longer see a blank CD when I insert it into my drive. It loads all burned CDs and everything else fine, just won't show me the blank ones so that I can burn a new one.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Sounds like your System Preferences got altered during the reinstall. Open Finder > Preferences... > General, and under "Show these items on the Desktop:", make sure "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" is checked.
If that doesn't solve it, open System Preferences > Hardware > CDs & DVDs, and for "When you insert a blank CD" and "When you insert a blank DVD", select what you want. I selected "Open other application" and browsed to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, so when I insert a blank CD or DVD, Disk Utility starts.

  • [CLOSED] Burning tools can't see blank DVD discs

    Hello.
Something strange is happening lately. Burning apps can't see blank discs. It doesn't matter if I have cdrkit or cdrtools installed - neither works.
Graveman hangs on start when blank DVD is in tray.
Brasero doesn't see my device and allow only to create ISO images.
cdrecord -minfo fails, with empty DVD-R present in tray:
    sudo cdrecord -minfo

I'm in optical group and . Thunar successfully mounts DVD with written content and cdrecord -minfo also gives me information about present media when it's not empty.
Is there anything I can do?

It's supposed to be in kernel, right? Besides, it was never necessary for me to install external driver, months ago burning DVD discs with tools using cdrkit/cdrtools/dvd+rw-tools wasn't a problem.
I even though that lack of libdvdread package was causing this... but having it installed doesn't help either (as expected - it's just for DVD-Video discs).
    EDIT: I've also tried dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/sr0 - doesn't work.
cdrecord have no problems recognizing empty CD-R medium, so it's happening with DVD discs only.

  • TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2312 can't see blank DVD - HELP!

HI all - I have a TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2312. It reads and plays CDs and DVDs but I'm trying to burn a video onto  a DVD and when I place the blank DVD R into it to burn, I get a "Please insert media" message. The DVD-R that I'm putting in is brand new so there shouldn't be any problem there. It's driving me nuts!! It may well be that this is simply not a DVD burner - I may just be that stupid. If not, is there any way to fix this problem?
    MANY THANKS!

The SD-R2312 can read and write CDs, but it can only read DVDs.  It has no capability to write a DVD.

  • Another: can't see blank CD R or RW in Finder

    Hi
Firstly I have searched and tried most of the suggestions in this forum, but so far without the result I need.
    Using an iMacG5/17"/1.8G/512MB/10.3.9 fitted w/PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K04F:
    Manufacturer: PIONEER
    Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K04F
    Revision: I437
    Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
Having closed down all open Apps, and with 14GB free on the HD....
When I insert the blank CD-R or CD-RW I see the dialogue box "ask what to do" and untitled CD. After typing the name of the CD and clicking OK, the drive spins and then shuts down. No Icon on the desktop. This is the same for R and RW media from Sony, Imation, Philips and Memorex.
If I switch to iPhoto I can select photographs then click on "share" and "burn" and it does burn to both R and RW discs.Disks appear on the desktop with the Icon and the title inserted by iPhoto.
The system does recognise media that has been burned and pre recordedDVD
System has worked AOK in the past and only now after installing the last security update (probably just a coincidence) has this problem been experienced.
Would be grateful for a pointer in the right direction.
    Thank you.

    Hello Fantom,
did you check if the drive is dirty, maybe dust o the laser? That happened to my SD, after cleaning with compressed air and many many runs of a cleaning cd it worked again.

  • Blank CDs not recognized by burning programs [SOLVED]

EDIT: By some divine intervention, the computer just started recognizing my blank CDs, I have no idea why it just started working, but it did!
Hi all, got a new laptop recently (Dell Vostro 1320) but burning programs don't let me choose a "destination drive", as if one doesn't exist. However, if I insert an acutal DVD, vlc-player will run it just fine. If I insert a blank disk, under gnome's "places" an option for Blank CD shows up, but when I click it, nothing seems to happen. How can I make burning programs recognize the existence of my drive? perhaps its not pointed in the right direction? I have brasero and graveman.
Here is my policy file for HAL
    <config version="0.1">
    <match user="tom">

    </match>
    </config>
I also have my CD/DVD lines commented out in /etc/fstab
    #/dev/sr0               /media/cdrom  iso9660  ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    #/dev/cdrom             /media/cd   udf    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0

    #/dev/fd0               /media/fl   auto    user,noauto             0      0
NOTE: I've tried playing around with fstab, commenting, uncommenting, but to no level of success. Please let me know if you need me to post more outputs.
I will try to post some more information about my burning program preferences.
Thanks for your help, and hopefully, it can be resolved!

fstab wont help you at all - that's for reading, not writing.
I know zip about brasero et al, but cdrecord/wodim should be ok to use.
Most probably, your cd will be /dev/sr0 and to burn an iso-image you do something like this:
    cdrecord -v driveropts=burnfree dev=/dev/sr0 -dao -eject -data /name/of/iso/image
I hope you realize that cd/dvd-burning is mostly a matter of transferring a whole image, you can't really use it as a 'normal' filesystem (at least as far as writing is concerned).
I guess someone will jump down my throat and tell me it is possible - and it is ... though not in the usual way of using a filesystem ...

  • Does upgrading to Snow Leopard change the way CDs and DVDs are burned?

Does SL make better space usage of CDs and DVDs, or is it the same as Leopard?
Does it burn files to CD/DVD using the same file formats? Does it do anything new?
    Thanks - Jess

CDs and DVDs use a standardized format. If they did not you could not play a CD or DVD in your Mac that would play in your CD player in your car or your DVD player in your living room.
Or maybe I don't understand your question??

  • My MBP can't see blank CD/DVD's. Is it a common problem?

    Hi,
I have installed Lion recenlty. Was trying to burn some files on a CD/DVD today and it was a surprise. My MacBook doesn't see a blank disc.
I've tried a 'complete erase' in the Disk Utility, but it doesn't see the disc either.
Does anyone know what could that be?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
Try this... click on a clear space on your Desktop so you see "Finder" in the Menu... then from the Menu click Finder/Preferences. Make sure the top 3 boxes are checked and close the window.
Insert a disk. If the Memorex disk does not mount on the Desktop, try a different Media. Sony, Verbatim, or Maxell.

  • Encore doesn't "see" blank media in DVD burner

When I try and burn a project to a DVD I get the message;" Please insert media". I've tried several different blank discs, as well as different brands...no matter what I still get this message. I can play pre-recorded DVDs in the burner, as well as music and data CDs...no problem. I've tried disabling the burner in Device Manager; and then re-enabling; also tried uninstalling the burner..no luck. I've uninstalled any other burning software that was on the machine and Encore still will not recognize that blank media is present in the DVD burner. I've run out of things to try/look at....Help!

Create an .ISO on the hard disk, use
    ImgBurn
    to create the DVD
If that works, you have "something" breaking the communication link between Encore and the drive

Even uninstalling software may not fix the problem... you may need a registry cleaner after the uninstall, such as

The model number is A1054, machine model powerbook 6.5. 12 inch G4 30 gig 1,2 GHZ 512 MB with DVD/CD-RW drive. This wil not recognize blank DVDs or CDs. It reads awhile and ther rejects them. The preferences are set up to ask what I want done to the disk. It will read and mount recorded CDs.

    Welcome to the discussions.
Go up to your Apple upper left and click it and when the box opens Choose System Preferences, and when that opens choose CD-DVD and when it opens, take your time and go through here and choose the options you want for CD and DVD's WHat do you want to happen for both Blank media as well as media with copy on them and what you want to open to read them,
Generally with DVD Movies you want your Player to open.
Blank DVD's you will want any combination of programs to open depending on what you want to do, from iDVD or Disk Utility to make copies.
The same steps must be done with CD's as well.
    Cheers Don

  • ITunes can't see blank discs

This is the first time I have not been able to burn a playlist to disc because iTunes doesn't show/see the blank. This happens if you open the disk to iTunes or to the desktop, on quitting iTunes it ejects the blank! Any ideas?

Ah ok that is different than what you said before. Before you said you couldn't see the blank in either iTunes or the Finder. Now you are saying that you can see it in the Finder but if you tell the finder to use iTunes, iTunes doesn't see it then? What happens if you say to use the blank in the finder? Does it show up in the desk top?
By the way, I don't think you actually "see" the blank in iTunes (I am not at home at the moment to check). Instead you just go to burn and then if there is a blank in the drive, it should write to the drive. So the next question is, have you tried putting the blank in, saying to use in iTunes, then selecting your playlist and going to the burn button? Does that work or do you get an error or does iTunes act like there isn't a blank in the drive.
When you mount a blank on the desktop by choosing to use the blank in the Finder, can you burn to it?
    Patrick
