Can't see desktop drives on startup anymore?

Nothing shows up on the desktop upon startup. Tried to startup from systems disk but only disk images show on screen like a screen saver? Help.
Lawrence

OK, that just means the hard disk either has a damaged directory, or is dead, or does not have anything installed on it presently, has the wrong jumpers connected for slave/master, or is in a format 9 does not understand. And it sounds like to me that your desktop pattern is showing where you expect the hard drive to be.
1. Formatting which may not allow hard drives to appear in Mac OS 9 include certain Windows formatted drives that Mac OS 9 doesn't support.
2. If adding a new hard drive, you have to make sure its cable color is the one which matches with the labelled master or slave setting on the hard drive itself, as well as the jumper which is a pin cover on the back of the hard drive next to the the hard drive's interface pins. You'll see a diagram on most hard drives, where that jumper should reside. If the hard drive used to be visible, and never was internally modified by changing its connected cable or jumper, this issue does not apply.
3. If your data is not backed up on the invisible hard drive, it is recommended you get Prosoft Data Rescue and an external hard drive of equivalent size to attempt to recover your data.
4. If your data is backed up, Alsoft Disk Warrior can fix your directory, assuming the hard drive is not malfunctioning.
By the way a couple of terms I'd like to let you know about so that when you ask questions, you don't confuse those trying to help you:
1. Screen Saver - A screen saver is typically an animated display, and/or a screen darkener which automatically runs after a set period of time in your control panels/system preferences (Mac OS X calls Control Panels system preferences), and can often be activated via moving your cursor to a corner of the screen. After Dark was a very popular Mac OS 9 and older version of Mac OS screen saver.
2. Wallpaper/desktop pattern - The image which appears behind all the disks, folders, and files beneath your menubar which can be modified via various control panels/system preferences that manage that kind of thing.

    Hi, my name is Omar
I promoted two domain controllers yesterday with Windows Server 2008 R2. Both work fine as a domain controllers role but when I logon, I can't see desktop, I only see a blue background, I 'cant see any desktop Icon. We have already had that problem and i

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Firstly please update the driver and in addition you can try below registry workaround.
To do this, change the value of the following registry subkeys to 3 (Manual) or 4 (Disabled):
    •HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cdrom
    Name: Start
    Type : REG_DWORD
    Data: 3 or 4
    •HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\parport
    Name: Start
    Type : REG_DWORD
    Data: 3 or 4
Note: If the above registry is changed to 4 (Disabled), the related device is not usable because a driver used in the device is not loaded. Therefore, if the device will be used in the future, the above registry should be set as 3 (Manual).

  • Can't see NAS drives

I'm setting up the D-Link DNS-343 on a MacBook, 10.5.5. I also run WinXP via VM Fusion. Once I got the two drives past hanging at 94% format (deleted cookies per FAQ), I could access the NAS via the web UI from both the Mac and PC sides, but I can't see the drives in Finder or Windows Explorer. I've played with the settings, updated the firmware, etc., but still nothing. Any ideas?

It has to be mounted as a network drive. It just won't show up on the Desktop. Use the Connect to Server selection from the Finder's Go menu. Give the IP address to the NAS that was provided in the manual.

  • Can't see network drive attached to AirPort

    Hi All
I'm a newbie Mac user (just got my MacBook Pro last Thursday, in fact-- OS X 10.5.7). While I've got most of my issues doped out, I'm running into a problem connecting to a network drive that's plugged directly into my AirPort Extreme. I have three Windows systems (running XP and Vista) that can attach to the drive with no problem, but I can't figure out how to mount the drive under OS X.
If I use the Finder and select the router under "Shared", the Finder just spins with the message "Connecting..." for ages until it times out.
If I try to attach to a server, that doesn't work-- I've tried all the protocols in various flavors. Everything times out. I do get the message that the server or password is incorrect, but I never see a prompt for a password, so I am not sure what's going on there.
In short, I'm stumped. When I open up the AirPort utility, and view the disk, the drive is attached-- it has a name, and it gives the correct statistics on used/free space. When I go to File Sharing, the checkbox for Enable File Sharing is clicked.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Well, I'm stumped. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple support-- they ran through the scenarios I had already been through, and they came up with nothing useful. I ended up taking a second 160gb HD that was formatted NTFS, and formatted if for HFS+. This drive was visible through Finder. I took the same drive, formatted it for FAT32 and, surprise, surprise, NOTHING VISIBLE.
The "just works" philosophy is OK, but it's bunk when it comes to network drive support. I'm doubting the wisdom of this purchase now.
$2500 for a computer that can't connect to a network drive that can be seen by an $500 Dell laptop?
The issue simply seems to be this: put a FAT32 drive on another box, and it can be shared by Macs and Windows boxes.
Put that same FAT32 box on an AirPort Express, and my Mac is BLIND. It can't see the drive.

For some reason Adobe premiere's new Locate feature can't see google drive folders. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I found this workaround, adding the google drive folder as a new library (works in windows 7 too):

    Hi,
In general, event ID 1530 means there are some data in the user profile are still be accessed when the user log
off from the Terminal Server. Please check if any of the data is still remained in the user profile supposed to be deleted. You can use Process Monitor or Process Explorer in order to find the software which is using the data and find the solution. If there
is no such data remained, the Windows have possibly stopped the process and deleted the data when log off. In such a case, you can ignore the Event 1530.
In addition, I recommend running SFC /Scannow from an elevated command prompt and check a dump file for Windows
    Explorer under C:\Localdumps.
    Besides, you can also download
Autoruns to troubleshooting Explorer issues. Please run Autoruns as Administrator, go to Options menu, Filter, select Hide Microsoft Entries and Ok. After that, open the Explorer tab,
and you will see all DLL that are running inside File Explorer, so start disabling and testing if Explorer crashed.

  • Ultra 10 OBP can't see SCSI drives

I'm trying to get my Ultra 10 to boot off a SCSI drive. I've tried several controllers (SYM21002, SYM21003, and another 53c896 card) and several drives, but probe-scsi-all returns nothing. If I boot off an install CD (the CD drive is still IDE), I can see the drives and install an OS on them, but when I reboot it still can't see the drives at the ok prompt. I've tried OBP 3.31 and 3.29 with the same results in both. Any idea how I can get it to boot off a SCSI drive? Or, failing that, is it possible to boot a bootloader on an IDE drive, which then boots off the SCSI drive?

you say you can install with scsi drives, but on restart it won't boot? what is the U10 looking for? did you try boot disk ? the U10 may be looking to boot off the network or somewhere off..
I don't recognize the chip numbers... are they supported by Sun? I have only used Sun-branded scsi cards--- 375-0005 comes to mind...

  • I can't see my purchases in itunes anymore.

I can't see my purchases in itunes anymore, the names of the tv shows that I've purchased are there in gray, but when I click on them, nothing happens. They are no longer available for download. Can someone help me figure out why?
It happened after I deleted Safari as my browser and changed over to Firefox and also switched to the Mavericks operating system.

Ditto, since the Mavericks update, the Purchased screen on my late-2012 iMac is just a blank white screen.  Works fine on my mind-2013 MacBook Air updated to Mavericks, but not the iMac.

  • I can't see hard drive attached to Airport extreme from Windows XP computer

I have a Windows XP computer on my network. I can no longer see the network hard drive attached to Airport Extreme from the XP computer. I can see it with all the MACs on my network and all the Windows 7 computers. I can connect to the internet with the Windows XP computer.
