Try Prosoft Data Rescue first:
http://www.prosofteng.com/
And if that doesn't work, the new Disk Warrior 4.0:
http://www.alsoft.com/
If neither works, you may need to get it to a data recovery specialist.
Always in the future have at least two copies of your data at all times, by backing it up as my FAQ explains:

  • Can't see Ext Drives

I had to force quit the finder and upon restart I couldn't see the ext drives on the desktop. They do not show on Disk Util. either. Tried disconnecting and powering down, but no lock. Both drives seem to be working fine.

Try unplugging all USB devices, then unplug the power cord from your computer for 15 seconds.

  • Can't see hard drive after reinstall of OS 10.1.3

I wanted a clean reinstall of OS 10.1.3 so I slipped in the disk and initiated an install on my hard drive. Something went wrong in the process and now when I try to reinstall by booting from the CD drive with the install disk in, the hard drive does not show in the list of volumes to install to. I used my "hardware test" disk and all hardware tests fine.
    How do I fix this?

The hard drive was probably being reformatted, when the process was interrupted. If the hard drive isn't Mac-formatted, it won't appear as an eligible destination volume on which to install OS X. When you boot from the OS X installer CD, go up to the "Installer" drop-down menu and select "Open Disk Utility." The hard drive should be listed in the column to the left, so you need to click on it to select it. Click on the "Erase" tab and choose "Volume format: Mac OS Extended," then click on the Erase button. After the drive has been reformatted, it will be a valid destination disk.

  • Can't see external drive after Leopard installation

Hi there, i hope i'm i the right place! I have just installed Leopard on my Intel iMac 1.83ghz, 2gb ram, 160gb HD and it no longer sees my external Maxtor One Tough 3 HD. Disk utility says it doesn't recognise it. I have checked the Seagate site for a Leopard update for Intel Macs but nothing yet.
    Any ideas anybody?

  • Can't find home drive after reinstallation of O.S.X

    Dear friends,
I have one ibook G4 and a Macbook Pro. Two days ago, the ibook G4 failed to start up, I tried in safe mode then pass through. Then I run Onyx-automation followed by restart, after that neither my desktop nor the sidebar of the finder window show the home drive icons,( I partitioned the internal hard disk into two drives). But when I run Disk utility and found both are there correctly, including the files and capacity, usage etc. it tested both drives "appears OK". Yesterday, I tried to reinstall O.S.X Tiger 10.4 without removing previous system via a firewire to my Macbook Pro which installed with Leopard( the disc drive of my ibookG4 corrupted last year).
finally, the hard drives are still invisible, I did tick the display options for hard disks from the preference panel of Finder. To the worse, the same problem happened to my Macbook Pro after I restarted it.
It seems a simply software issue, physically the hard disks are ok through the disk verify and permission verify.
    Headache! Please advise ASAP.
    thank you,

what happens when you enter commandshiftc in finder? that should show all the drives. if it doesn't, maybe the drive has acquired the hidden flag. run the following command in terminal
    sudo chflags 0 /
you'll have to enter your admin password which you won't see as you type it. that's normal. see if the drive shows up.

    hi, V.K.
after running the two commands, suddenly, The Macintosh HD icon showed up at both desktop and sidebar in finder, but the other drive (I partition into two parts) still not showing. Then I open Onyx and tick the "unhidden those hidden files", I found that drive. So I conclude it was hidden by sth. But I don't know how to unhidden it, the icon always in grey.
    Can you please instruct again.
    thank you.

aha, so it was a hidden flag after all. then run
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
you may need to restart after that to make the second drive show up.

I run the command at my Macbook Pro, my second drive show up. So exceited! However, when I tried with my ibook G4, neither drives come out, is there any difference in the commands between Tiger and leopard. just now, I check the hidden files with Onyx, both drives are there.

I don't have a source attribute for this (maybe I wrote it myself!):
There are visibility toggling instructions at [this web site|http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html] using Terminal or Applescript.
If you don't like Applescript or Terminal there is an application called [JuhOS X|http://www.saunalahti.fi/~juhruo/juhosx> that lets you toggle visibility on individual items. It does not have the most intuitive interface but your drive should appear on the first page. Check it really is invisible, then click on the drive and toggle visibility. Effects will not take place until you restart your finder, so the easiest thing to do then will be to restart your computer.

  • Time Machine can't find external drive after installing Lion

Time Machine can't find external drive after installing Lion. I have a Laice 1 terabyte external drive that worked fine with Snow Leopard and now no show ... tried connecting it to front port and Mac Pro can't see it. Also lost Office,Quicken, and Final Cut Pro  says: " You can't open application because Power PC apps are no longer supported" this is Not a good surprise!

Does the drive work when just directly connected? If so, have you prepped the drive?
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Can't see network drive attached to AirPort

    Hi All
I'm a newbie Mac user (just got my MacBook Pro last Thursday, in fact-- OS X 10.5.7). While I've got most of my issues doped out, I'm running into a problem connecting to a network drive that's plugged directly into my AirPort Extreme. I have three Windows systems (running XP and Vista) that can attach to the drive with no problem, but I can't figure out how to mount the drive under OS X.
If I use the Finder and select the router under "Shared", the Finder just spins with the message "Connecting..." for ages until it times out.
If I try to attach to a server, that doesn't work-- I've tried all the protocols in various flavors. Everything times out. I do get the message that the server or password is incorrect, but I never see a prompt for a password, so I am not sure what's going on there.
In short, I'm stumped. When I open up the AirPort utility, and view the disk, the drive is attached-- it has a name, and it gives the correct statistics on used/free space. When I go to File Sharing, the checkbox for Enable File Sharing is clicked.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    -Ed

Well, I'm stumped. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple support-- they ran through the scenarios I had already been through, and they came up with nothing useful. I ended up taking a second 160gb HD that was formatted NTFS, and formatted if for HFS+. This drive was visible through Finder. I took the same drive, formatted it for FAT32 and, surprise, surprise, NOTHING VISIBLE.
The "just works" philosophy is OK, but it's bunk when it comes to network drive support. I'm doubting the wisdom of this purchase now.
$2500 for a computer that can't connect to a network drive that can be seen by an $500 Dell laptop?
The issue simply seems to be this: put a FAT32 drive on another box, and it can be shared by Macs and Windows boxes.
Put that same FAT32 box on an AirPort Express, and my Mac is BLIND. It can't see the drive.

  • Ultra 10 OBP can't see SCSI drives

I'm trying to get my Ultra 10 to boot off a SCSI drive. I've tried several controllers (SYM21002, SYM21003, and another 53c896 card) and several drives, but probe-scsi-all returns nothing. If I boot off an install CD (the CD drive is still IDE), I can see the drives and install an OS on them, but when I reboot it still can't see the drives at the ok prompt. I've tried OBP 3.31 and 3.29 with the same results in both. Any idea how I can get it to boot off a SCSI drive? Or, failing that, is it possible to boot a bootloader on an IDE drive, which then boots off the SCSI drive?

you say you can install with scsi drives, but on restart it won't boot? what is the U10 looking for? did you try boot disk ? the U10 may be looking to boot off the network or somewhere off..
I don't recognize the chip numbers... are they supported by Sun? I have only used Sun-branded scsi cards--- 375-0005 comes to mind...

  • Can't see NAS drives

I'm setting up the D-Link DNS-343 on a MacBook, 10.5.5. I also run WinXP via VM Fusion. It has to be mounted as a network drive. It just won't show up on the Desktop. Use the Connect to Server selection from the Finder's Go menu. Give the IP address to the NAS that was provided in the manual.

I am confident that the problem lies within Mavericks as the Goflex Home drive can be accessed perfectly on the same network using my older PowerMac, my iPad and my iPhone. Also, the NAS is accessible via the internet through the Seagate Share facility.
Can anyone help me get Mavericks to see my drive?
