Can't see FireWire drive as a network drive

I am trying to share a LaCie 250 GB Fire Wire hard drive over an all-Mac network. The drive is FAT32 formatted. I am not able to modify the permissions for the drive. When I log into the computer that has the drive connected, the Fire Wire drive does not show up as an available network drive.
Any ideas?

Since you are all Mac, might try formatting as OS Extended (journaled) for starters.

  • Time Machine over network: can't see hard drive

I've connected an external firewire 800 drive to our server and then chosen it in Server Preference as a drive that users can backup to, however when I try to select it in the user's Time Machine prefs I can't see the drive. Any ideas?

Is no one else having this problem?

  • Ultra 10 OBP can't see SCSI drives

I'm trying to get my Ultra 10 to boot off a SCSI drive. I've tried several controllers (SYM21002, SYM21003, and another 53c896 card) and several drives, but probe-scsi-all returns nothing. If I boot off an install CD (the CD drive is still IDE), I can see the drives and install an OS on them, but when I reboot it still can't see the drives at the ok prompt. I've tried OBP 3.31 and 3.29 with the same results in both. Any idea how I can get it to boot off a SCSI drive? Or, failing that, is it possible to boot a bootloader on an IDE drive, which then boots off the SCSI drive?

you say you can install with scsi drives, but on restart it won't boot? what is the U10 looking for? did you try boot disk ? the U10 may be looking to boot off the network or somewhere off..
I don't recognize the chip numbers... are they supported by Sun? I have only used Sun-branded scsi cards--- 375-0005 comes to mind...

  • I can't see hard drive attached to Airport extreme from Windows XP computer

I have a Windows XP computer on my network. I can no longer see the network hard drive attached to Airport Extreme from the XP computer. I can see it with all the MACs on my network and all the Windows 7 computers. I can connect to the internet with the Windows XP computer. I previously had no problem seeing the network hard drive attached to the airport extreme from the XP computer and one day it just disappeared. I have deleted and reinstalled Bonjour, not just Bonjour print services. I can print to a network printer that is not attached to the Airport Extreme. Help!

Well, I'm stumped. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple support-- they ran through the scenarios I had already been through, and they came up with nothing useful. I ended up taking a second 160gb HD that was formatted NTFS, and formatted if for HFS+. This drive was visible through Finder. I took the same drive, formatted it for FAT32 and, surprise, surprise, NOTHING VISIBLE.
The "just works" philosophy is OK, but it's bunk when it comes to network drive support. I'm doubting the wisdom of this purchase now.
$2500 for a computer that can't connect to a network drive that can be seen by an $500 Dell laptop?
The issue simply seems to be this: put a FAT32 drive on another box, and it can be shared by Macs and Windows boxes.
Put that same FAT32 box on an AirPort Express, and my Mac is BLIND. It can't see the drive.

  • Can't see NAS drives

I'm setting up the D-Link DNS-343 on a MacBook, 10.5.5. I also run WinXP via VM Fusion. Once I got the two drives past hanging at 94% format (deleted cookies per FAQ), I could access the NAS via the web UI from both the Mac and PC sides, but I can't see the drives in Finder or Windows Explorer. I've played with the settings, updated the firmware, etc., but still nothing. Any ideas?

It has to be mounted as a network drive. It just won't show up on the Desktop. Use the Connect to Server selection from the Finder's Go menu. Give the IP address to the NAS that was provided in the manual.

  • Adobe premiere Locate can't see google drive folders?

    Hi,
For some reason Adobe premiere's new Locate feature can't see google drive folders. Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Cheers,

I found this workaround, adding the google drive folder as a new library (works in windows 7 too):

  • Two Macs can't see each other on same network

We have an iMac and a Mac Book Pro on the same apple network at home. The iMac can see and connect to the Pro and exchange files but the Pro can't see the iMac in Go > Network. All sharing settings are the same. Any thoughts welcomed.

How many machines are on your network? If you have over 7, then here should be an entry called "All..." in Shared in the Sidebar. Click on that. It will show you all the servers that are available on your network. You can also get to this list via Computer (Command-Shift-C) and click on Network.
Shared in the sidebar shows a max of 7 servers, with Back To My Mac's at the top (if any), then servers you have mounted share points on (if any), then the top 7 (in alphabetical order) servers in Network (a.k.a. "All...").
    Hope that helps.

  • Can't see external drive for movie import

    Hi gang,
I have all of my iMovie projects on an external hard drive plugged directly by Firewire 2 into my MacPro.  When I run iMovie 9.09, I get a beautiful sorted list of all of my projects by year.  When I run iMovie 10.0.5., I can't even see the external drive that contains my movies. On the left column of the new iMovie, I have the choices of iPhoto Library, All Events, All Projects, and an iMovie Library that is empty.
How can I see my external drive with all of my long years of iMovie work on it in the new version of iMovie?
    Cheers!

Disk formatting and disk access security are two different thing.
An Airport disk can be formatted as HFS+ and both Macs and PCs will be able to access it.
Regarding "Security" which you setup on the Airport Extreme there are two option:
    a) "Secure Disks: With accounts": Here each user on your network will only be able to see and access the folders and files they uploaded to the Airport disk themselves. The disk (as hardware) is shared but data is not shared.
    b) "With a disk password": Here all users on your network will be able to see and access all folders and files on the Airport disk.
I hope this makes things a little more clear.

  • Can't See External Drive Data

    Hi,
I'm brand new to Macs but loving my new iMac and Airport Extreme with one problem... I keep all my music on an External drive and I can't see anything on the drive. It is plugged into an Airport Extreme through a USB hub. I plugged it into the Airport directly and got same result. Printers plugged into the hub work fine.
If I go into the Airport Utility, I can see the that the hard drive exists and appears to have the sharing settings correct (according to other posts here). I can't see it from my PC's either. If I plug the drive into a PC, the other PC's can see all the music. The external drive is a Maxtor 200 gig One Touch.
    Any suggestions?

  • Can't see erased drive in Finder

I erased my seagate drive using disk utility and now I can't see it in finder. I was using the seagate as the backup drive in Time Machine, but I wanted to start over so I could add another external to drive to the backup process. What do I need to do to be able to see it again? ThanksErased

Disk images will not solve your problem, they are not related at all.
100MB seems TINY for any modern disk! That isn't right.
Tim is correct that the disk may need repairing. Shutdown the Mac. Poweroff the disk and check your connections are all good.
Power up and go back to Disk Utility. Do you see the disk? It's possible you erased the partition, in which case you will not see a disk on the Desktop but you should see the external disk in the sidebar of Disk Utility.
Is this a USB or Firewire disk? These should show an orange icon in Disk Utility. If it isn't there poweroff the disk & try other USB ports & leads if possible.
If you are unsure take a screenshot of Disk Utility & post it here. It's cmd+shift+4 then drag the crosshairs over the window to select the area. It appears on your Desktop, the camera icon will allow you to add images here (on a desktop browser).

  • Red Hat can't see my drives for the install

I will be installing Oracle on our new servers, except Red Hat Adv. Server 2.1 does not see the drives in my HP external drive enclosure. Red Hat does see the drive array that is in the local server. Does anyone know how to make Red Hat see this drive attached via SCSI cable (U320)? Best regards

    Hi,
Is there any error message when you try to map network Drive manually? It would be better to provide more details about error message.
Generally speaking, this problem can be caused by Network Connection problem, please make sure your Client PC could access to Network Drive PC.
In addition, please check Network Drive PC security setting, if there is any firewall policy prevent this operation.
If still no use, please check Event Viewer if it identify this problem.

There is no error.  There is no connectivity problem.  THe drives map automatically and always have.  I can open up File Explorer and browse these drives all I want.  I can open up Word and browse to these drives just fine.
However, when I open certain programs, and click File | Open, the mapped network drives just simply aren't there.  I only see C and D and that's it.

  • Disk Warrior can't see startup drive

I have a 2008 iMac running Mountain Lion and have not been able to start up from the internal hard drive since a system crash. Following the advice on these forums, I tried Disk Utility, but it could not repair the problems it found with the disk. I purchased Disk Warrior and booted from its CD, but it cannot see the startup disk either.  Previously, I had been able to boot from the Mountain Lion recovery partition and see the afflicted drive from another machine in Disk Utility when connected in Firewire target disk mode. But having tried both since running Disk Warrior, the affected drive no longer shows up. Is there anything else I can do to try to get Disk Warrior to see the drive and repair/recover files from it?
Note: I have a recent Time Machine backup but wanted to exhaust all my options trying to work on the startup drive before testing that TM backup on new hardware. (As an aside, is it possible to restore the TM backup to another volume—that is, not the affected drive, assuming that's impossible, but another partition of an external drive—and boot from it to check and see if there any problems with the backup? (My fear is that whatever caused the initial crash and problems will persist in the Time Machine backup, but perhaps I am being paranoid.)
    Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for the tip. I figured out that as the drive is not connected via USB, then of course it won't show in Disk Utility. And the Lacie Cloudbox I bought only has Ethernet.
Lacie do not supply any software to format the drive as far as I can see. The set-up utility they used to ship doesn't exist any more.

  • Macbook pro can't see NAS drive since Mavericks upgrade

    Equipment:
13" Macbook pro (mid 2010) running Mavericks 10.9.4, Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory  16 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256Mb, Crucial SSD 240Gb, Seagate Goflex Home NAS drive 2TB, Wifi network is BT Infinity.
Since upgrading to Mavericks, my macbook pro cannot see the Goflex Home drive on the network at all. I am confident that the problem lies within Mavericks as the Goflex Home drive can be accessed perfectly on the same network using my older PowerMac, my iPad and my iPhone. Also, the NAS is accessible via the internet through the Seagate Share facility.
Can anyone help me get Mavericks to see my drive?
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

Thanks Csound1 for your suggestion but I checked that I was on the most up to date version of software. I have been successful though in establishing contact with the NAS by following the steps outlined here:
    http://support.seagate.com/kbimg/flash/215555/215555_EN.swf
It means that I have to 'connect with server' through the 'Go' menu in Finder each time now and I would like to know how I can make this happen automatically each time I boot up my MBP.
    Thanks.
