Can't see folders on desktop

I restored a backup and computer tells me I can't see files on desktop even after I verify disk permissions
How do I fix this?

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
 ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

  • LabVIEW file browser can't see folders

I am using LabVIEW 7.0 on Sparc Solaris 2.6.  I am using NFS to serve folders from a RHEL5 linux server.  These folders contain my LabVIEW code, and I am mounting them on my Sparc Solaris workstation.  When I open the LabVIEW file browser, some folders and files (but not all) appear to be missing.  LabVIEW will open the files no problem if I type in the complete path.  For example, when I navigate to directory A, there should be SubdirA and SubdirB, but SubdirB does not show up in the file browser.  Yet, if I just type SubdirB in the text box, I can navigate to this directory no problem.  Using my terminal, I can view these folders without issue.  When I use the file browser on nedit, hotjava, tedit, image viewer, etc. I do not have this problem.  It is only the LabVIEW file browser that has the problem.  Can anyone tell me what this could be, and if there is anything I can do to fix it?

    Solaris workstation hostname: stealth3
    Linux server hostname: linux1
Shared (through NFS) folder directory on linux1: /share/ims_programs
mounted (through NFS) directory on stealth3: /mnt/ims_programs
The /mnt/ims_programs folder contains two subdirectories: production and certification.  When using ls from the command line, both subdirectories are visible.  In the same way, the file browser for graphical applications like nedit, tedit, hotjava, etc. can see both subdirectories.  The LabVIEW file browser does not show one of the two.  As best as I can remember, it showed certification but not production.  Descending into the file structure, there are many cases like this, where existing files or folders are "hidden".  When the exact same directory structure is copied to a Solaris server and shared with NFS, the LabVIEW browser can see everything.

  • Can't see folders shared on Leopard MacBook Pro

I am trying to enable file sharing on my 10.5.2 MBP. When I do so, the other Macs on my network (all 10.5.2) can see the MBP but when you click on it in Finder they can't see all of the folders that I am trying to share. I am trying to share the Public folder for my account and it does not show up on the other machines. I added the shared folder in /Users/Shared with the same settings and the other machines can see this folder but still not the ~/Public folder for my account.
I've enabling filesharing as well as allowing guests to access shared folders (in Accounts). I've also verified that in the File Sharing configuration that I have set my account, the "Users" group, and the "Everyone" group all to Read & Write for the ~/Public folder that I want to share. I've also enabled "Share Files using AFP" in the Options area. I've even tried to "Repair file permissions" with the Disk Utility.
I was able to set up file sharing on the other Macs and I can see all of the shared directories fine from this MBP. What am I missing that is causing this problem for files shared from the MBP??

The following instructions apply to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. I don't use Lion and don't know whether these procedures are any different in Lion.
Open the Displays pane of System Preferences. Click the Help button ("?" at lower right corner) and read the information in the Help window for background information.
Click the Detect Displays button. A preference pane should appear on each of the two screens.
Click the Arrangement tab and uncheck the checkbox for Mirror Displays.
Click the Display tab on each screen in succession and set the resolution for each screen to the highest available setting.
Click the Arrangement tab again and drag the rectangles representing the two screens into the physical relationship you prefer. This will govern how you move the cursor and your open windows, icons, etc., from one screen onto the other.
Drag the white line representing the menu bar onto whichever screen you want it to appear on.
Another option, in which you use only the external display and the MacBook Pro's display is closed, is called Clamshell Mode. That is described in this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
It requires that you have an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and that your MBP is plugged into AC power.

  • MSI GeForce 9800 gt after updating the driver can't see the whole desktop

I have a MSI GeForce 9800gt, and I've tried to update the driver. After update I can no longer see the whole desktop, I have to move the mouse to the edge of the screen to see the rest, it's like there is a zoom or something.
The driver that came with the CD works fine, but any other driver give's me the same problem. I've tried with v.191.07, v.178, v.258.96, v.306.81 and a few other. I've also reinstall the windows but with no better results (I'm using Windows XP Pro).
         Please help. Thank you.

Did you try to set the correct resolution for your screen after updating?
Yes, I've tried different resolutions, the only resolution where I see the whole desktop is 800x600. I even try to change the refresh rate to something lower then 60Hertz(I've read on a forum that a refresh rate of 51 or 59 might solve the problem) but no luck.

clean old drivers with >>Driver Fusion<< in Safe Mode 1st,
    then reinstall vga drivers
I've tried this as well, I even try with a fresh install of windows, I've bought a new SSD for my system disk, so I have reinstall the windows.

  • Can't see folders on pc that is networked to macs

I have my pc showing up on my mac but I can't see any folder from my macs on my pc. My pc found the shared printer but says its offline even though its not. I think it sees it as being plugged into the printer itself as the printer software is installed on the pc. the printer is plugged into my mac mini. both macs show up on the pc network map along with printer although it doesn't specify make or model of the macs just ip address and mac address. I am running windows vista on an acer with a Linksys WRT54G2 wireless router. The pc is networked wirelessly and the two macs, the other a G4 on tiger are routered through ethernet.

There is a neat app that explains almost everything you want to know about using Macs. The main one is in the Finder's Help menu, it is called Mac Help. And almost all Apple apps have a specific one to that app in their own Help menu.
If you go to the Finder and select Mac Help, after it opens click Index. Next click S, then click *Sharing Printers*. You will find a walk through description on sharing your printer with Windows computers. There are two ways to do it; one using Bonjour for Windows, the other using SMB/CIFS.
If you return to S in the Index and choose *Sharing Files*, there are two walk through descriptions; +Setting up a Mac computer to share files with Windows users+, and +Setting up a Windows computer to share files with Mac users+.

  • Can't see folders or files on a recorded DVD

I have a Panasonic VHS/DVD recorder. In the past - with Jaguar & Tiger - I have been able to see the VIDEO_TS Folder and the files contained therein by double-clicking on the DVD icon.
I discovered that on my MacBook Pro running Leopard, when I open the DVD it doesn't show any folders or files. A window opens on the desktop, but there is nothing in there. Is there anything I can do about that? Did Apple intentionally "hide" the files?
I have a set of a foreign TV series that I had recorded from VHS to DVD, although I was missing a few episodes. At the time, I used MPEG Streamclip on a G4 iMac running Jaguar. A friend recently gave me the episodes I was missing, so I wanted to re-do my set of DVDs.
It will be a lot easier if I can open individual .vob files, so I hope there is an easy solution.

files and folders that start with dot are normally hidden in finder. you really don't want to see them all the time, trust me. they are system files and folders that you don't normally need to see. to see trashed items just open trash in the dock. but if you want to take a look run the following terminal command
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1; killall Finder
to hide them back (as I'm sure you'll want to soon) change 1 to 0 in the command.

  • Finder stopped working altogether, and can't see Volumes on desktop

I cannot open a finder window and I can't open any folders on the desktop either and my harddrives aren't showing up.
I updated to 10.4.5, I also recently turned on "see hidden files" but later turned it off
Another weird circumstance was for a few sessions all my desktop icons were very pale in color, thats gone away, now its just the finder issue, which incidentally makes my machine run like crap when I AM able to open something from dock.

Had a similar situation. Spinning beach ball in finder, no icons on desktop, not even the hard drive. Turns out it was a problem with something I had tried to move out of the trash to the desktop -- a font I was trying to eliminate while running FontDoctor.
Solution was to change startup disk to a bootable external firewire hard drive and restart. (If you don't have an external bootable drive, but have access to another Mac, then you can have your computer's hard drive show up as a desktop icon on the other computer by powering down your computer, connecting it to the other computer via Firewire and powering up again while holding down the T key.)
With the external drive as the startup disk, I was able to access my hard drive / users / my name / desktop. From there I dragged the offending font to the trash in the dock of the external drive and emptied it. Also, as there was unemptied trash in the dock of my computer's hard drive, I typed the word "trash" in Spotlight which revealed, among other things, a folder in Users called .trash. Sure enough, when I double clicked on the folder, my trash from the original start-up disk was there, full of all sorts of things. So I dragged the contents to the trash bin of the backup drive, emptied it, then selected the original drive as the startup disk and restarted.
Alas, everything was back to normal. Hard drive icon, desktop stuff, and no spinning beach ball. Hope this helps.

  • I can't seeing/accessing my desktop

I have a problem with how my desktop is working (or not as the case may be). A solution would be greatly appreciated and apologies in advance if I'm missing something obvious.
This morning I installed and used installed itubedownloader on trial and saved a downloaded mp4 file to my desktop. However, [all of my] desktops are now blurred/translucent and I am unable to access desktop folders - or do anything on my desktops. The itubedownloader programme appears genuine (and a very easy product to use).
This is not a blurred/pixellated display question as all my apps runs clearly in the foreground, as and when they are opened. I have tried turning off the transparency settings (Accessibility>Reduce Transparency) but that made no effect. I have restarted with no effect.
The oddity is that as I move between desktops the resolution clears and I can see what is underneath.
This is best explained with an image:
And as I try to move between desktops what my desktop should look like.

Hi, XPS is a sort of virtual printer that comes with Windows. Make sure to select your printer and not XPS.
If that doesn't work, try rebooting your Home Plugs and router.
Hope that is of some help.

  • Import problem. LR4 Can't see folders on my external hard drive.

When I go to import to select the device from which to import in, it doesn't show me the folders in that device. So I click show subfolders and then it shows me my thousands of photos
I want to be able to select the folders to look at from my External Hard drive but there is no drop down menu.
I know it's there because I've used it before.
I'm not sure if I've posted my screen shot or not.
I've fixed the problem but I don't know why it keeps happening so I want to find out what I'm doing.
    file://localhost/Users/granttara/Desktop/Screen%20Shot%202013-01-19%20at%2012.29.10%20PM.p ng
In the screen shot you can see that my External Hard IS showing the folders it contains but I have no idea how I got that function back when it goes.
I've clicked on arrows and right clicked on things and then 'boom' it's working again.
Any help so I know what to do in the future would be great.
    Thanks.

Now that I see the screenshot I understand what you mean:  The NO NAME is being interpreted as a camera memory card (a device) rather than a removable hard-drive, so when you import images from a CF card it doesn’t show all the subfolders, it just shows the pictures, and won’t let you do an Add or Movie import, just the two Copy variations.
    Try this:
    1)   Click on the up-down arrow to the right of NONAME
    2)   Select Other Source…
    3)   Navigate to a subfolder on NO NAME and click Select or Ok or whatever it says and it’ll list that subfolder.  The icon at the top left should change from a straight-on black device icon to a rotated, lighter removable drive icon.
    4)   Press F5 to refresh the Files icons and your NO NAME device should show up as a drive-letter or removable drive down in the lower area, in addition to being a Device above.   Once it is in the lower Files area you should have the clickable arrows to go into subfolders.

  • After updated to Ver.31.0, Mac OSX 10.9.4 Japanese language edition can't see folders in the Folder Pane.

    Hi,
I'm a Japanese user of Thunderbird on my MacBook Pro mid-2010, OSX 10.9.4 Japanese language edition.
After I updated the Thunderbird, very often it only shows a tab named "Home" and no folders appear in the Folder Pane, the left end column of the window, just a big huge blank.
I rebooted my Mac several times and only a couple of times I successfully were able to see and use the folders that I created and read the e-mails inside just like I was able to before updating. All the other times, it fails to show folders, and I can't read any e-mails inside them. Even after I succeeded in showing the folders, when I relaunched the Thunderbird it fails again. I did nothing but relaunching the Thunderbird and rebooting the Mac, no other settings I've done ever since I updated to Ver.31.0.
Under this condition it's virtually impossible to use the Thunderbird.
Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only help.

I still got another couple of Thunderbird 31 user reports on Mac OSX 10.7.5, and 10.8.5 that are supposed to be compatible with TB31 but are unable to use because of the same symptom as I experienced: No folders shown in the Fonder Pane.
So again, it's not the OS compatibility issue, it's a bug in the TB31.
I sure hope they'll fix this issue ASAP!!

  • Can't see folders/files but connected to VPN

I'm trying to connect to my office VPN. Unfortunately, I'm the only person in the office who uses a Mac and our remotely-based IT guy doesn't have a lot of Max experience, so I haven't been able to get much assistance recently.
After a lot of trying, I finally was able to connect to the VPN tonight. However, now that I'm connected, I don't see any folders/drivers/whatever in my finder. It's as if I'm not even connect. I did search around and see that apparently Macs need a little boost to find and populate those items in the Finder by going to "Connect to Server" in Finder. However, even that doesn't work.
I've tried "Connect to Server" using the IP address I used to connect to the VPN with –– didn't work. Error comes back as "Check the server name of IP address, and then try again."
I've also tried connecting via another IP address my IT guy gave me –– that didn't work either. Same error message.
I have a username and password to access the shared drive on our network. Is there some place I can enter that in the command line or something? Any help? This is so frsutrating. I feel like I've wasted 2 complete nights (hours at a time) trying to get this to work so I can actually do work from home...
FYI, I'm connected over Cisco VPN IPSec using the Mac OSX internal VPN client.

    Hi
I have the same issue, I have a Vodafone branded Huawei HG556a with an external drive connected. I have found that it isn't possible to connect via Finder and that SMB doesn't work either. The only way I could connect to it was via FTP using Cyberduck (or Filezilla), but no use as I can't add my media files from the drive to iTunes, so unfortunately disappointing. I'm still looking, but here's the document I was referred too from another forum.
    broadband.vodafone.ie/download/files/storage_mac.pdf
Although not an answer to your question, hopefully this will give you an idea why you are getting the password and username errors when you know they are correct. In the end when I entered the FTP details into Cyberduck I was able to connect.
I know this doesn't help solve the problem (as I'm still looking too), but at leas you know why (ish).
    Cheers
