Can't see G4 HD to reinstall OS 9

OS 9 on my Power Mac G4 4oo MHg disappeared. It started up on OS 10.3 instead.
I tried to reinstall OS 9, but only the install disk shows up as a choice to install onto - it won't show the HD.
I also tried to erase OS X, then reinstall OS 9; HD still does not show up.
When I then reinstalled OS X, I had no problem - HD shows up, system loads fine.
How can I get back to working on OS 9?
Thanks!

Hi, macinitly -
Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
The usual cause for a drive to be visible/addressable in OSX but not in OS 9 is the absence of OS 9 drivers; when those drivers are not present, the volume in question can not be mounted when the machine is booted to OS 9 (any OS 9, including that on a CD).
Apple KBase Article #TA20774 - Disk Is Available in Mac OS X But Not in Mac OS 9 addresses that problem, and offers one possible way to recover gracefully, by using OS 9's Drive Setup to update the drivers (and thereby re-install them).
Unfortunately that rarely works. The only solution then is to re-initialize the drive and make sure that OS 9 drivers are installed (which is automatic if using OS 9's Drive Setup, but optional if using OSX's Disk Utility). This will erase the drive completely, so be sure to first back up anything you don't want to lose.
If the drive had been OS 9 bootable, then the drivers had been there. Why they went away would be the concern.
This can happen as 'just one of those things'; or, it can indicate some kind of damage has happened to the boot partition on the drive (that partition is an on the drive which is visible only to some disk utilities).
To check for such damage, boot the machine to your OSX 10.3 Install CD and run Disk Utility from the CD, let it have a look at the drive. If there are errors reported, let DU fix what it can. DU may not be able to fix everything it finds (it has better diagnostics than repair capabilities); if that occurs, a stronger utility like Alsoft's DiskWarrior can usually fix things with little or no loss of data.
You can also do a re-initialization of the drive to repair the boot partition. Choose one of the deep-wipe options, such as writing zeros, to ensure old damage is wiped off. Again, this will completely erase the drive, so back stuff up first.

  • Can't see hard drive on Reinstall

Was having some issues with my MBAir. Was all bogged down, taking 20 minutes to boot up and giving them the dreaded pinwheel. So I ran a reinstall of Snow Leopard opening that might clean it up. Took 5.5 hrs to do the initial writing and then when it rebooted and asked for me to select the disk location for the install there were none shown. Suggestions? I've tried restarting the OS Install disc and I still can't see my hard drive for the install. I opened Disk Utility and the only thing showing is my USB DVD drive with the install disk in it... kind of stuck.

If you want to try to replace it yourself, [iFixit has good repair guides|http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/MacBook-Air-Hard-Drive-Replacement/86 0/1].
As I take the parts out, I tape them to a piece of paper with clear packaging tape and write the step number (and screw color from guide) next to them. Making sure you've got the correct tiny screw in the right place is a bugger without doing that.

  • Can't see hard drive after reinstall of OS 10.1.3

I wanted a clean reinstall of OS 10.1.3 so I slipped in the disk and initiated an install on my hard drive. Something went wrong in the process and now when I try to reinstall by booting from the CD drive with the install disk in, the hard drive does not show in the list of volumes to install to. I used my "hardware test" disk and all hardware tests fine.
    How do I fix this?

The hard drive was probably being reformatted, when the process was interrupted. If the hard drive isn't Mac-formatted, it won't appear as an eligible destination volume on which to install OS X. When you boot from the OS X installer CD, go up to the "Installer" drop-down menu and select "Open Disk Utility." The hard drive should be listed in the column to the left, so you need to click on it to select it. Click on the "Erase" tab and choose "Volume format: Mac OS Extended," then click on the Erase button. After the drive has been reformatted, it will be a valid destination disk.

  • Reinstalled windows. Now can;t see how to get Photoshop, Bridge and lightroom back

After a complete reinstall of my system, I just came to the Adobe site wanting to download my products and can;t see how to do it. Might just be missing the obvious, but I dunno...any ideas? Where do I go to download the Creative Cloud app, and from there I can presumably download the products I have paid for...

You can check your Adobe account onoline and see if there are links there for your products.  If you purchased them as downloads thru Adobe then they might be.  Otherwise, you should be able to find them thru the following page:
    Download and Installation Help -
    https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install.html
You will need your serial number as well, which might be found in your Adobe account online if you registered the software.

  • I can't see my Canon MG5220 printer... Initially I was getting "there is a communication error" so I rebooted everything, reset the printing system, reinstalled the driver and still NO luck! It seems to see the scanner, but never the printer. HELP!

I can't see my Canon MG5220 printer... Initially I was getting "there is a communication error" so I rebooted everything, reset the printing system, reinstalled the driver and still NO luck! I see no printers available in the Print & Scan area. If I click "+" it seems to see the scanner, but never the printer. HELP!

The printer component uses a different protocol to advertise itself on the network compared to the scanner component and it can take several seconds longer to appear after the scanner has.
That said, with the introduction of AirPrint, the MG should be seen as Bonjour Multifunction in the Add Printer window, as shown below.
Selecting this Bonjour Multifunction entry will create a printer using AirPrint and a scanner using the iCA driver.
So do you see the MG5220 as Bonjour Multifunction or just Bonjour?

  • Can't see Macintosh HD when trying to reinstall

In short: Trying to reinstall Yosemite after erasing disk, can't see Macintosh HD when asked to select install disk, can I lay see recovery (which is locked). Can see disk under disk utility but no Erase tab visible, only First Aid and Partition tabs. In long: I've just today got my MBA 15", and I spent the day setting up things, including activating FileVault. I encountered the dreaded "connect power adaptor to resume encryption" bug (despite the progress bar having completed and then power adaptor indeed being connected. I thought, since I'd not installed much or put any data on, that the easiest solution was to erase the drive and reinstall OSX from recovery. I booted into recovery -> disk utility,  chose the Macintosh HD,  and went onto the erase tab. After trying to erase, I was met with an error message. I can't remember the details but I think it mentioned not being able to encrypt. I then went to the Reinstall OSX section, but where there was previously the option to select my Macintosh HD, there was now only my external HD. Going back to the disk utility, I can still see the Macintosh HD but there are now only First Aid and Partition tabs, and everything in the partition tab is greyed out. Rebooting the machine only changed one thing: under Reinstall OSX, when selecting a drive, the recovered rive is now visible (though locked). I'm worried I've bricked my 12 hour old baby, can you help me out? Thanks, Joe

Let me see if I have this straight:
    Brand new 15" MacBook Air.
You activated FileVault, and the encryption process "froze" when you encountered a bug.
You decided to erase the drive, and re-install Yosemite, but the installer is not giving you Macintosh HD as an available option.
I've never encountered this bug that you speak of, and I've activated FileVault on several Macs over the years, so I can't speak to it directly.
My suggestion is to ensure you have a reliable power connection (ie. check that the power connector is on straight and there's no metal pieces stuck inside to the magnets), re-erase the drive, and then try install Yosemite again.

  • I need to reinstall creative cloud, but can't see how.  Nothing works anymore!

Hi, I've had some issues with my iMac and need to reinstall Creative Cloud.  I no longer have the software to uninstall, and can't see how to reinstall on the Adobe website.  Where do I go from here?

You can delete the alias also Adobe creative cloud if you have that in Application folder and try downloading CC cleaner tool for MAC Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Run the software and remove Creative cloud Desktop app.
    Navigate to the OOBE folder.
    Mac OS: /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE
    Delete the OOBE folder.
Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 and later
You can download it again from here: Free Creative Cloud | Download Adobe Creative Cloud free trial
Sign in and then try to install CC apps.

  • Reinstalling os x: Can't see "archive&install" option

    Hi!
I bought my Macbook Pro Retina 13" 5 months ago, and I just realized that it came without iMovie and iTunes. It might have something to do with the fact that I bought a sample piece. The store said that I should reinstall OS X which should bring those back,  and they gave me the instructions to do the installation with an "archive & install" option. But when I restart my computer (while holding cmd + R), I can't see that option anywhere! It just starts to reinstall OS X and I'm afraid that it will erase all my pictures and software (which I should do a back up of, I know, but now I don't have an external hard drive!). How can I be sure that the reinstallation won't delete my data, since I can't see the Archive&Install -option anywhere??
    Thanks!

There is no such option since the disappearance of Leopard. Reinstalling OS X will not bring back iMovie since it isn't part of OS X and never has been. It's part of iLife which should be available to you through the App Store.
To erase and install properly you need to do the following:
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Setup problem and now can't see time capsule

On Friday, I used Airport utility to set up Time Capsule. There was a choice saying "do you want to add on to or replace and existing router?", to which I said yes. at the end of the setup, Airport asked "Do you want to replace the existing router now?" and I said no because I don't want to replace it yet. That seemed to confuse Time Capsule.
On Monday, I disconnected the existing router and I tried to hook Time Capsule up to the DSL modem. Time Capsule didn't recognize the internet and my computer wouldn't recognize TC. Time Capsule is now not connected to anything (I reinstalled the old router and it is working fine). My computer can't see it an neither can Airport Utility. I tried to rescan but nothing comes up. Does anyone know what is wrong and how I fix it?

The only way to tell is remove the drive and test it.
I would do a reset of the TC first. Just hold in the reset button for about 7sec and wait for it to reboot. A reset will not do anything to your files. Then try again to access. If no luck the drive is probably dead. Either replace the whole TC under warranty.. or if you have no warranty left/drive contains valuable info, open up the TC.. plenty of sites explain how to upgrade to a bigger drive. just follow them. Put the drive into a USB carrier and plug it in or even better use it directly on sata port.

  • Can't see some letters from my Gmail box in Mail.app in MAC OS 10.8.5.

Hello, can't see some letters from my Gmail box in Mail.app in MAC OS 10.8.5.

The solution was to remove all versions of Acrobat Pro and reinstall Acrobat Pro XI. I still had the download file in my Time Machine backup. That's a good thing, since the download link from the order listing on the Adobe website under my account would not work.
The problems don't occur with version 11.0.0. I got the work done, now I'm updating to 11.1.0 and will report if they came back.

When I turn on Messages, I can't see my messages.  All I can see is a screen with horizontal lines.  How can I get the regular Messages screen back?

The same is happening for me. Today I decided to reboot my PC because it was acting up a bit, go figure, and then for some reason at the same time the PC was restarting my macbook froze. I had to do a reboot with the restart button but then all that came up was a gray background and in the middle of the screen was a darker gray folder with a white question mark in the middle of it, blinking. I can't imagine why the restart would've affected my macbook. After finding information on how to fix this, I tried all of the steps that were given about using the mac OS X disk to use the first aid utility to fix it. When using the Disk Utility option whenever I select my hardrive and am in the First Aid tab, the only button I can use is the Verify Disk Permissions. The other three buttons, and namely the most important Repair Disk button, is/are not selectable (grayed out). I then tried resetting the PRAM the way they also said with the command + option + P + R and waited for the second startup sound. After that I gave the Disk Utility a second try, but still nothing. And now if I try to just reinstall the OS completely I can't even select a destination volume on the third step (Select Destination). Apparently this means i'm SOL.
