Can't see HDD in Finder

Hello everyone!
I have a WD 2TB My Passport which used to be recognised on my iMac until I upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.2. At the same time I copied some files off the HDD onto a PC, so not sure which of these events caused it, but now I can't see the HDD in Finder at all, no matter how many times i plus it in and out. I can see it through Disk Utility, but fixing the disk didnt really make any difference.
At the same time a Windows laptop identifies it absolutely fine.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance!

When you click on the drive in Disk Utility, at the bottom of the screen, what format is it reported as? (eg, "Mac OS Extended", "exFAT", "Windows Format", something else?) Can you click the Mount button to any effect?
What kind of connection do you have to the drive (eg USB), and is there another connection you can use (perhaps Firewire?)
Matt

  • Windows 7 sees iMac but iMac can't see Win7 in Finder

I'm a brand new convert from the PC world to the Mac world and I'm trying my darndest to get this PC off my desk. I figured I would just get rid of the monitor and use remote desktop or CORD or something to control my PC through my new iMac. However, I'm having ALL sorts of problems and I think it's all related to the fact that my iMac can't see my WIN7 PC.
I have a new 21.5 iMac with snow leopard. My PC is running WIN7 64 bit. I've gone into the network preferences on my iMac and put in the workgroup name. That must have worked because my WIN7 machine can see my iMac just fine. However, when I go into finder and click on Network, it comes up with nothing. I CAN see my partner's macbook when it's on but I just cannot get my WIN7 machine to show up in the finder. My thought is that if I can get finder to see the computer, I should be fine. Another small detail, I WAS able to use finder and "connect to server" - type in the PC ip address and was able to connect to the PC that way. In that, that's how I moved all my photos and music over from my PC to my Mac. But for some reason, I just can't get it to show up in Finder - or connect to it from MS Remote Desktop Client.
I'm really hoping that someone has an answer for me because this is getting more and more frustrating! Anyone out there a mac/pc networking guru who can help me out?

    Hi Jeff,
    Did you try VNC?
    This link below states ...
"Anyone using a Home or Home Premium variant of Windows will need to resort to using the aforementioned VNC software to connect to computers remotely."
    http://windows7news.com/2009/11/21/windows-7-remote-tools-remote-desktop-connect ion/
According to that site there is a solution .. it does mention the Apple remote desktop protocol
.. maybe that might be another solution to check into.

  • Can't see drive in finder, but see it in disk utility

    Hi everyone!
I have a SeaGate drive I've use as my project folder drive. All of a sudden I cannot see it in finder under "devices". If I go to disk utility, I can see it there. I ran a "verify" and "repair" and everything comes out fine. No issues. If I right-click on the drive (in disk utility) and say "open" and I see and work on my files. I did notice that after hitting "open" the drive icon shows ghosted... see attached images. The drive in question is "MTP Server". Any idea why this is happening? Thanks in advance!

It may mean it has suddenly gained a 'hidden' flag, which would also explain why you can access it whilst being oddly absent from Finder.
One way to check is to open up Terminal and type:
    cd /Volumes
    ls -laO
The two l are lower case L and the O is a capital o.  You should get an output like:
    drwx------@  52 owner  staff  hidden          1768 Jul 25 16:05 VolumeName
    drwx------+  11 owner    staff  -                    374  Apr 13 16:41 OtherVolume
Look for the entry saying 'MTP Server' in place of 'VolumeName' and see if the word 'hidden' shows up in the same place as the first example above, or whether there is just a hyphen in place of that word like the second example.

  • Disk full and can't see why in Finder.  Just installed eyeTV

I am a fairly new Mac user.  I had loads of disk space on my Mac Book Pro, and installed EyeTV Diversity.  After watching TV for a couple of hours (not recording anything) I got a disk full message.  I've used Finder, but can't find where the problem is.  I deinstalled EyeTV s/w, but the Mac HD still says its very close to full.  The EyeTv s/w problem say it's not their fualt!  Somehow some large part of the disk is now unavail and I can't see where or how to fix it.  I now have a paper due and can't do anything. Plse help!

    Dear Linc,
Great advice, I downloaded and successfully used OmniDiskSweeper, and found a large log file, presumably from the EyeTV s/w and deleted it.  The counts of disk space etc. seemed to reset themselves without a repair. Haven't found out why the EyeTV s/w does this but at least my MBP is all OK now. Many many thanks.
Thanks one and all for trying to help, and for doing so, so very quickly.  It's nice to know we newby users can get help.  Restores one's faith in human nature.

  • Time Capsule powered on but no light is on and can't see it in finder.

So yesterday I had to restart my router and after I restarted it the time capsule I couldn't see it in finder. I noticed that it was working but there was not green light or orange on. So i tried to restart it but nothing helped. is there anyone that had the same problem? please help!

Unfortunately, no light on a Time Capsule is almost always a sign of a power supply issue or outright failure.
Unplug the Time Capsule for 20-30 minutes and try to power it back up to see if it the indicator light will at least light up.
If no luck after a few tries, I'm afraid that the Time Capsule has failed and will need to be repaired or replaced.
How old is the Time Capsule?  If it's less than 3 years old, and you have AppleCare in effect on one of your Macs, the Time Capsule is likely covered as well.  Take the Time Capsule to an Apple Store....if you have one in your area....or contact Apple Support directly to discuss your options.

  • Can't see HDD on airport network

Until recently my home network setup was organised like this: internet modem (Sierra aircard) with wireless turned off, connected by ethernet to Apple Time Capsule set up as a router. Wireless connection to various computers and to an Airport Extreme which, in turn, was connected via ethernet cables to a Mac Mini functioning as a music server, and to a Synology DS 213+ for music file storage. This allowed me to connect from any computer to both the Mac Mini and the Synology NAS, which was useful for managing music downloads etc from my usual work computer.
Unfortunately, for some reason using the Time Capsule as a router interfered with the functioning of the internet modem. So I switched on the router function for the Sierra Aircard and changed the Apple hardware configurations so that the Time Capsule and Airport Extreme now simply 'join' the wireless network established by the Sierra. But what this means is that while internet functioning is better, the NAS is no longer shared across the network. It's visible to the Mac Mini and I can live with that if necessary since I can still access it through the screen sharing facility. But screen sharing is a bit clunky and not the most convenient way to go about things like downloading albums and organising music files on the NAS.
Does anybody have any suggestions about how I might make the HDD visible across the network again?
On the basis of suggestions elsewhere I tried connecting the  Synology to the Airport Extreme with a USB cable but all that achieved was to make the NAS disappear altogether. It obviously only functions with a LAN connection via ethernet.
I'd appreciate any comments or ideas or, better still, solutions that I'm obviously just missing.

...as I mentioned in my initial post.Don't get upset. Many times people use the lingo but haven't done the proper configuration. It is always to ensure the configuration is correct before proceeding to far. It's my two Appletalk laser printers that have the problem."AppleTalk" is the magic word. See Henry B.'s post for why you are having problems.

  • Can't see Camera in Finder

My camera (Nikon D90 DSLR) is recognised by iphoto ok but isn't seen in the finder or desktop like normal removable hard drives.
I need to copy RAW images that iphoto can't import, I've loaded all the camera drivers etc, is it because the camera is just released or is there a way to make finder let me see the camera files.

Now thats what i've been looking for, many thanks.
(I want to back up the raw images so that when Aperture is able to handle D90 RAW images i have them stored)
    Thanks again

  • HT4796 System information shows files on my brand new MBP that I can't see anywhere in Finder?

I'm brand new to Mac's. Very good with PC's but don't know my way around these machines very well. Bought a brand new pro today and started to do migration assistant at startup to transfer my itunes music and films from my windows pc to my mac over my network. I left it for 15 minutes and the bar didn't even move (transferring like 60gb) so I thought screw this and cancelled it on my pc (can't cancel on mac) and that canceled it on my mac too. I started over to just do my music as that's all that I really needed (10GB). Again it took too long so I canceled and thought I'd do it later and continued to set up my new mac. I then went into about this mac and under storage it says I have a load of files (below) but I can't find anything in Finder so where are they and are they some of my files that transferred over before I cancelled or are they system files (seems excessive to me to have over a gig of audio)
Also when I go into finder and show all my files all I can see is this
so where are all them files?
Not tech savvy with Mac at all btw but I will be soon as I learn fast and am generally very good with computers

No, it is normal. As I have said, there is a large quantity of system files that come with your mac. 1.22gb of music covers default ringtones, alert sounds, etc. 5gb of apps covers the default applications included with your mac. The movies and photos are probably icons and other media included in applications. You really have nothing to worry about.
If this was a decade ago you would and should worry, however things seem to be progresively getting larger.

  • I have set up my time capsule but can not see it in finder

I have setup my time capsule, I can see it on the network and have done an initial backup, I can see it under shared devices in finder but when I open it I cannot see any files in the folder

If you have backed up your Mac using Time Machine to the Time Capsule, you would not use the Finder to see the files on the Time Capsule.
If you want to see the backups, click on the Time Machine "clock" icon on the dock at the bottom of the screen and wait a few minutes for everything to load.
Use the scale at the right of the screen to move from different recent backup times or dates. Select the time that you want and use the Finder like interface to navigate to locate a file or folder.
More info on Time Machine is available in this Apple support document:

  • Can't see NAS in Finder after upgrade to Yosemite

That's it - before, in Mavericks, my NAS always was visible on the left pane in Finder.  Now, it's gone and I can't find a way to access it at all from my MacBook.

I have a Synology NAS, and have exactly the same problem.
At the moment, I have to use Finder's "Connect to Server" option and put in "smb://DiskStation".
Apple needs to fix this one! There is also a thread on this in the Synology Forums:

  • Can't see 'Shared' in Finder Side Bar

I managed to connect both my iMacs on my first networking attempt a couple of weeks ago. However at sometime between then and now the Shared option has disappeared from the Finder Sidebar on both macs. I've verified that both macs have all three view options checked under Finder Preferences, but this makes no difference. I've tried logging out and in but no joy. This is driving me nuts. Any help gratefully received.

Right, both problems now resolved thanks to the very helpful (and patient) man at Apple.
    1. A quick scroll through the forums tells me I'm not the first person to notice that sometimes the Shared menu disappears form the Sidebar in Finder. Apparently the reason this sometimes happens is that this is a 'dynamic' menu which means that if the computer cannot find a shared network, the menu will not be visible. It is still there, just not visible.
    2. And the reason that neither computers could find each other, despite the fact that they could both independently find the same router and gain access to the internet is.....we still don't know. It was only after 60 minutes of box ticking and Network tests and various Pings the man at Apple asked me the golden question favoured by all IT help desks...'Have you tried turning it (the router) off and on again?' 60 seconds later normal service was resumed...
Thanks very much for your various attempts to help this knuckle-dragging neanderthal find a solution. Next time I'll know to reach for the off switch!

  • HOW CAN I SEE THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE WITH FINDER?

    Hi Folks,
I need an help. How can I see everything in my hdd, the exact content of it, using Finder and not an 'easy view'? For example, in the hdd root there are folders like 'tmp', 'var', 'usr' and so on but I can't see them from Finder just using the command prompt. How can I do?
    Thanks in advance.
    LS

Open the AppleScript Editor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    tell app "Finder" to quit
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1"
    delay 2
    tell app "Finder" to run
This script will not allow you to access anything which is set not to be readable by your user account. The /dev/ folder on the startup disk is hardcoded to be hidden to the GUI and cannot be revealed in the Finder by this or any other method. To turn it off, replace the 1 with a 0.
