Can't see my External HDD via Airport Extreme & powered hub

I have Windows 7 laptop and it just can't seem to detect my HDD via the Airport Extreme wired through a powered hub. If I connect HDD directly to my laptop it can see the files.
First I had problems with seeing my printer and found out that I had to install Bonjour and that worked. Is there some kind of program to make my HDD accessible?

of course there is an easy way, however, it entails erasing all data on the drive. do you have access to a spare, "temporary", drive ?

  • My iMac can not see my mini Mac via Airport extreme using host name, only via IP address. What am I doing wrong ?

I have an iMac and a mini Mac attached to the same Airport extreme. It would appear that Bonjour works because I can see the hostname of the mini Mac server in Finder on the iMac.
But if I type in the host name (myminimac.private) in the Safari browser at the iMac it can not find the mini mac. However if I type in the IP address of the mini mac server it can see the see it.
It used to work but I must have done something to mess it up.
    Anybody any suggestions ?

You have the wrong card. You need the original AirPort card for your G4.

  • ITunes Settings for Media on External Drive via Airport Extreme...

iTunes Settings for Media on External Drive via Airport Extreme base station versus plugging directly into laptop.
My current configuration is that my iTunes Media (700gb) are all stored in an External Drive that's plugged into my Airport Extreme Base Station. This works great for me having wireless access to my iTunes external drive.
Whenever I need to back up that hard drive with Time Machine, I just plug it directly to my laptop...
But how do I let iTunes (or iTunes library) know that this is the same hard drive where all my media is stored when it's plugged directly into the laptop as opposed to trying to access it from my Airport Extreme network?

No there isnt any files call library in the folder i created I am now in the process of copying them back but I guess I will loose all my playlists and playcounts. I do have a Copy of my drive that i made with carbon copy cloner. So maybe it will be best to boot from there, restore and start again.
Chris it was just the media folder. I was following the instructions on the apple support page. Got to point 14 didn't get the warning but did seen to have a brand new itunes, so emptied the trash as they said expecting everything to be fine but it wasnt.

  • External HDD with Airport Extreme gets stuck

    Hi guys,
I hope you can help me. I bought an Airport Extreme last december.
The problem is that I can enter my External HDD via Windows 7. After reading and writing at the HDD, Windows Explorer get stuck, and it will say it couldn't find the path Z:\ ..... My Airport Extreme also gets stuck. I lose my signal (still connected to Airport, but not to internet) and I have to unplug it. After it the Airport will start up again and everything works.
I tried several things but it didn't work:
    - Hard reset
    - Different hard disk (with external power supply)
    - Today I went to the Apple Store in Haarlem, and I got a new Airport, but this one has the same problem!
I formatted the hard disk to FAT32.
    Please help me!

    Thank you for your reply!
My problem is slightly different. The hole AirPort is stuck, it won't do anything. Wifi stays connected, but there's no Internet connection. Also my iPad and iPhone don't have internet connection anymore.
The problem arise also when I'm just viewing pictures at the external hard disk, or just browsing through folders. The only way to get all working again is to unplug the AirPort from electricity.
It's kind a weird that Apple uses this feature as unique selling point, but unfortunately it doesn't work for PC!
    Simple and secure file sharing.
AirPort Extreme can turn your external USB hard drive into a secure drive you can share across your Wi‑Fi network and access securely over the Internet. All the documents, videos, photos, and other files instantly become available to anyone on the network, Mac and PC users alike. It’s perfect for file sharing, collaborative projects, and more.

Plugged external hd in airport extreme but can not see using IPad .I have downloaded app for airport & can find airport but does not show hard drive. How can I access files on external hard drive?

Unfortunately you can only access hard drives plugged in airport extreme or time capsule, from a Mac or a PC. iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod touch) do not support this feature.

  • ITunes Library access via external HDD w/ AirPort Extreme

Ok wizards...  I've read a number of posts, but can't seem to pull together the answer to my question and hoping someone's able to push me in the right direction.
I've got a Windows 7 PC with my iTunes library stored on an external HDD due to it's size.  My PC is often not at home (i travel for work a lot) and would like to have my library available to my family via my Apple TV when i'm not there.  So... I'm contemplating buying an AirPort Extreme and connecting the HDD.  I have read that the HDD must be formatted to FAT32 for it to function w/ the AirPort extreme (seemingly an arduous step, but surmountable) but can't seem to find a clear answer to the question:
Will I be able to access my Library via the Apple TV via this method?  Obviously any tips / tricks would be greatly appreciated and thanks (in advance) for anyone who can help!

No, at least not directly. You would still need an iTunes "server" to stream the iTunes media to the Apple TV. Typically a iTunes server would be a Mac or PC computer running iTunes.

  • Can't read iPhoto library from external drive via airport extreme base stat

I can't seem to open my iPhoto library from my external USB drive that is hooked and being shared through my airport extreme base station. If I plug the external drive directly to my mac via USB it works but not when going through the base station.
This only started happening when I upgraded from iLife'06 to iLife'08.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix?

That's a problem that many are posting about. Haven't read of a solution yet. Be sure to report the problem to Apple at: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Library on an External Drive via Airport Extreme - STAY AWAKE!

Sorry for the cross-post, but this is related to both iTunes and the Airport Extreme.
I've gone around in circles on this for a few months now, but wanted to see if anyone had any new ideas. I have a 1TB drive attached to my Airport Extreme that holds my iTunes library on it. I have had some stability issues with the disk as follows, as well as a couple of nagging problems.
Once the disk is mounted and iTunes starts, the disk remains available as long as iTunes is playing music. If iTunes stops playing music but stays open, the disk will go to sleep and will become unavailable to Finder. About 50% of the time the disk can be remounted by selecting from the AE shared directory, but often the disk hangs and cannot be accessed any further. I have to either reboot the disk or even reboot the AE as well in order to get everything working again. I sometimes have the same issue with a secondary AE attached disk that is used for Time Machine backups, so I suspect that it is related to something in OSX that insists that external disks sleep in this manner. Overall, my experience with these AE-attached disks has been sketchy at best. They are fantastic when they work, but something in the mix is causing communication between the MacBook, the external disk, and the AE to just go haywire at times.
    Ideally, this would happen:
    1) All external disks would mount automatically on startup
    2) As long as iTunes was open (even if not playing), the disk would remain mounted and available.
    3) The disk(s) would only sleep and/or dismount if directly instructed to do so.
Any thoughts that the gurus have would be appreciated. Seems like I might be able to do some of this through scripting, but I am not sure where to start on something like that.
    Thanks in advance.

In addition to Bob's solution, I use the following Apple Script for mounting my attached HDD to the desktop without it opening. That is, it just shows up as an icon on the desktop.
    try
mount volume "afp://<basestation_name>.local/<disk_volumename>" as user name "<enter disk username>" with password "<enter disk password>"
    end try
I then run this script as an application from my user profile's Login Items pane. (ref: System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items)

  • Sharing an external drive via airport extreme

I have a network system set up using Airport Extreme (the dome shaped one). It is connected to my ADSL DLink box. I also have an Airport Express plugged in downstair to increase my wireless signal strengh. I have one G3 connected to the Airport Extreme via an ethernet cable (because I don't have wireless on that computer). I have a Mac pro beside it, accessing the network via wireless and downstair, I have a powerbook wich accesses the network wirelessly. What I would like to do share my external hard drive with all three computers, so that they can all see my jobs folder, along with iphoto and itunes. I basically want everything to be in sync. Can anyone give me advice on how to best go aout it? I thought I would be able to plug my hard drive into the airport extreme and share it that way, but nothing is showing up on the airport utility. Is my airport too old? Thanks for any help or advice.

Plug the external hard drive into one of your stationary Macs. On that Mac go to System Preferences-> Sharing preference pane and enable File Sharing.
Now you should be able to access that drive from any of your other Macs.

  • ITunes on an external HDD and Airport Extreme BS

Ok, sorry to be boring, but I can't get this to work as I think it should.
I want to have a central iTunes library based on the USB-connected 1TB HDD, so that I can train all my Macs to reach for the files from the same place. So that I can access the same tunes and movies from my "MBP", "Intelimac" and "Intelimac2". I have copied the iTunes library from Intelimac 2 over onto the HDD, and in iTunes preferences told it to look for the files on my Airport-connected HDD - and it does. Mostly. I have 600 movie files on that HDD, but when I start up iTunes on the Intelimac and the MBP, there are only the 56 or so original movie files showing up in the Movies list. When I click on a random movie in that list, and ctrl click it, then "Show In Finder", it does indeed point to the correct folder way over there on the External HDD. So why doesn't the list in iTunes show ALL 600 movies available in that same folder?
Similarly, there are discrepancies between what shows up in iTunes lists, and what it SHOULD be showing, baring in mind there are hundreds of other media files available to be displayed and therefore played. It's as though iTunes is ignoring many of the tracks/playlists/movies in the same folder that it is indeed recognising and offering up to play...
    What am I doing wrong?
    Cheers for any help.
    Chris

Just had the same problem. I found the answer in other message threads. A solution would be to click on the option button immediately when you launch iTunes. A message box will pop up instructing you to select a library. This should allow you to choose the music library from the external drive. See the url below.

It worked for me. Good luck!

  • Using an External HD, via AirPort Extreme, with Time Machine

I just picked up one of the new airport extreme base stations today so I could wirelessly back up my MBP via time machine. When I got the airport it self working and plugged in my external HD it said the back up was "delayed" and it "could not connect to disk." I called apple to ask them what I need to do and they told me that the airport extreme is not made to backup to time machine. You can only backup the old fashioned way by manually moving files to the disk. About to pack it up and take it back to the store I thought I would do a quick google search and see if anyone found a way around it. Oddly enough they have and it is very easy. I'm not sure why apple couldn't tell me/ didn't know. I want to preface this with I already had a time machine back up on the same HD that I connected to the airport extreme (im not sure if it made a difference or not). Here are the steps I followed:
    1) Open "Time Machine Preferences"
    2) Open the "finder" and your external HD should be listed under the "shared" tab
    3) Open the file "Time Machine Backups"
    4) Go back to your "Time Machine Preferences" and click "Select Disk"
    5) Select your external HD from the list. It should have an icon with a wireless symbol in it
    6) Start your backup
Oddly it did not work when i just clicked on the "shared disk." I had to open the file that said "Time Machine Backups" and then Time Machine recognized it.
Also, it backed up from scratch so it takes forever. Mine has been going at a rate of about 12GB per hour. I am not sure why couldn't recognize the other file (from the USB backup on the same HD).
I hope this helps. I thought I would make a post because Apple told me they don't support it and it does work!

    This is very helpfull.
I consider buying the Airport Extreme. I currently use a Lacie 500GB external HD. I partitioned the HD and use one part for Time Machine Backups and one part for my iTunes and Iphoto libraries (so Music and photos are on the HD, as well as the iTunes Library file).
If I connect the HD to the Airport Extreme, can I use the iTunes Libray and Photos through the wireless network? And perhaps soem movies? It then will be much like a Time Capsule. The reason I don't want to but a TC is that I already have a HD and I could save money buying an Aitport Extreme instead of a Time Capsule.

  • Can not see Guest Network tab on Airport Extreme-

I have an Airport Extreme base station with the Guest Network enabled. Last week my neighbour bought a brand new Airport Extreme base station and asked me to help set it up. Problem is that I can't see the Guest Network tab on his Airport Extreme when I use the Airport Utility. I can see it on mine.
In fact, as the networks are close I can see both airports at the same time. I have verified that the firmware versions are the same.
    Any clues?
    Thanks in advance.
    Jordan

Your friend likely has a gateway (combination modem/router) from his service provider. Since this device performs as both a modem and a router, and the AirPort Extreme is also a router, you have two routers in series on the same netowrk.
When this occurs, the second router...the AirPort Extreme in this case....must be configured in Bridge Mode for correct network operation.
    Check the following setting:
    AirPort Utility > Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Is the setting for Connection Sharing set to Off (Bridge Mode)?
If yes, the Guest Network feature is not available in this setting. Your friend will need to replace his gateway with a simple modem if he wants to enable the Guest Network feature.

  • I can't see hard drive attached to Airport extreme from Windows XP computer

I have a Windows XP computer on my network. I can no longer see the network hard drive attached to Airport Extreme from the XP computer. I can see it with all the MACs on my network and all the Windows 7 computers. I can connect to the internet with the Windows XP computer. I previously had no problem seeing the network hard drive attached to the airport extreme from the XP computer and one day it just disappeared. I have deleted and reinstalled Bonjour, not just Bonjour print services. I can print to a network printer that is not attached to the Airport Extreme. Help!

Well, I'm stumped. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple support-- they ran through the scenarios I had already been through, and they came up with nothing useful. I ended up taking a second 160gb HD that was formatted NTFS, and formatted if for HFS+. This drive was visible through Finder. I took the same drive, formatted it for FAT32 and, surprise, surprise, NOTHING VISIBLE.
The "just works" philosophy is OK, but it's bunk when it comes to network drive support. I'm doubting the wisdom of this purchase now.
$2500 for a computer that can't connect to a network drive that can be seen by an $500 Dell laptop?
The issue simply seems to be this: put a FAT32 drive on another box, and it can be shared by Macs and Windows boxes.
Put that same FAT32 box on an AirPort Express, and my Mac is BLIND. It can't see the drive.

  • Can't see printer on PC with airport extreme

I've been running an Airport Extreme for a couple of years and the printer and internet work great. Just added a PC running Vista, I have to connect to the internet on my iBook before I can connect on the PC. The PC does not see the wireless printer to add it. Have tried changing printer sharing, but that doesn't help.

Got lucky to phrase my question correctly once which lead me to iFelix posting on the proper sequencing of a TCP/IP port connection. Is that right? anyway, it worked perfectly. Thankyou iFelix!
