Can't "see" my music on my iPod!!

Background: I recently lost my brand new 30GB iPod video. Got a replacement just today and something seems amiss.
When I plug in my iPod it seems to sync Ok with iTunes, but when I highlight my iPod, all of the music files are visible, but grayed out. Som I cannot play a file directly from my iPod while it is hooked to the PC.
Also, I cannot create a new playlist on my iPod, only in my iTunes Library.
What gives?
Also, I may be imagining things, but my "new" iPod (which I bought on Ebay), seems bigger than my previous one. It measures 4" x 2-7/16" x 10/16". The HP logo is also on the back. Is this a real iPod?
Thanks much for any help.

HP iPods... I know they did this awhile back. Not sure if they still do it?!
When you select your iPod, and the songs are greyed out, its becuase of security and stealing protection. Although there is plenty of software that allow you to "un-grey" the songs.
You cannot create a new playlist directly on your iPod. It has to be done on your iTunes Library, then synced to your iPod.
The new 5G iPods are a little bit larger than previous models, but thats because of that nice 65,000+ color screen... (the screen is bigger)

I am trying to see my music when I plug in my ipod classic but it does not allow me to.  I can't even see the screen to manage or sync anything

    Hello Oscar,
It sounds like your iPod is not recognized by iTunes.  I recommend following the steps in the article below for an issue like this:

  • When i plug my ipod in i can't see my music or playlist?

I just got a new used ipod and I transferred music from my library to my Ipod and now I can't see my music list or my playlist so I can't add or delete music.

Can't see it in iTunes or on the iPod itself?  To view content that is synced to your iPod via iTunes, click the small black triangle next to your iPod from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes to reveal a submenu of content.  Click the appropriate playlist or content category to view what content has been synced to the Nano.

  • I can't hear the music on my IPOD 60Gig 5th generation and can not see my videos

I can not hear the music, I can not see the videos on my IPOD 5th generation. I have restored it to the original settings and it still does not work.

That's likely an indication or one or more hardware failures of the iPod. You'll want to get the iPod serviced in order to gain full functionality of it again or start saving for a new iPod.

my hard drive with all my actual music files died.  how can I transfer the music on my ipod classic to another drive?

If you purchased all of the songs through itunes store, please follow these steps:
    1. Open up Itunes and Click on Itunes Store
    2. Once you're in the Itunes Store look to right side of the screen and you should see the word "purchased". Click purchased and you'll be sent to a purchase screen.
    3. Click on "All Songs" and then it will show all the songs you've downloaded. From there you just hit the button that looks like a cloud with an arrow on it, and it will download all the songs all over again.
If you didn't purchase them through Itunes, then you'll have to download software that will strip the songs from your iPod onto your computer. Here is a guide about how to copy iPod music. Hope it helps. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

You'll want to copy the music from your iPod to your computer and into iTunes first.  See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering some of the different methods and software available to assist you with this task.  Once you have successfully copied all your content back to your PC and into iTunes, you can safely Erase and Sync your iPod.

  • Can I transfer my music from the ipod to itunes?

I was having a problem with itunes so I completely deleted it and reinstalled it, thinking that I could sync music from my ipod to the itunes library. Unfortunately, the new itunes said that my ipod was synced to a different library. So if I were to sync it now all of the contents of the new library would be on the ipod. (i.e. nothing)
My question is can I transfer the music on the ipod to the itunes library instead of the other way around?
    Sony Vaio   Windows XP

If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
There is also CopyPod. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • CAN I TRANSFER MY MUSIC FROM MY IPOD NANO TO MY MACBOOK PRO

can i transfer my music from my ipod nano to my macbook pro.

Yes, you can. If your music collection was purchased from iTunes, you are in a good shape since that music is forever yours under your iTunes account. Therefore, after installing iTunes on your new computer, sign into your account and see all your music under "Purchsed". Then simply download it to be phisically present onto your macbook pro (for free since you've already paid for it).
On the other hand if you happens to not be a sucker to waist money on iTunes and your collection was ripped from the internet (via torrents and such), you can follow this guide to transfer ipod music to mac. Hope it helps. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

  • I don't see my music on my ipod anymore.

I don't see my music on my ipod anymore. Only a small part is visible. Maybe 10%.
When I choose to sync Entire library (2402 songs) I see in iTunes on my Mac (version 11.0) that probably all songs are selected because I only have 4.83Gb free on my iPod 60GB. Then I do sync and suddenly I have 36,55 GB free. When I click on the blue bar it tells me that there are 188 songs on my iPod.
When I choose "selected playlists" iTunes tells me that there are 2210 songs in the playlists. But when I click on the blue bar it tells me that there are 2837 songs. Then I click "Apply". After syncing there are only 10 songs on my iPod, and I don't see any of the checked playlist on my iPod. Besides that all my video's were removed from the iPod.
Anyway I can't listen to my music and audiobooks anymore and want that problem solved.
    Anyone can help me?

Does the music play in iTunes?
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsynce all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • I can't see my playlists on the iPod nano (7th generation)

I can’t see my playlists on the iPod nano (7th generation), but I can see and play them on the iTunes on my laptop. What do I do?

    Hi lone_dreamr,
This is going to depend on how you are syncing music to your iPod nano. If you are automatically syncing, what option do you have selected in this menu? (Entire music library, or Selected content)
You may want to uncheck the "Sync Music" box, apply the changes, then recheck the box, and apply the changes once more. This will instruct iTunes to completely remove all music from your iPod, and then copy the files once more. If you have a large amount of music, this initial sync may take a while.
If the above does not resolve your issue, see the following articles:

  • Compatibility message now I can't see my songs on my ipod

Tonight right before I downloaded the new version of itunes I got a message to turn of the compatability in itunes. I didn't know what that was or how to do it so I went ahead and downloaded the new version. Now when I plug in my ipod I see this new screen but can't see the actual playlists that are on my ipod. I get all this new nice but useless to me stuff when all I want to do is manually delete some songs from my ipod. I can see my itunes library but that doesn't help either. Will someone please tell me what I need to do?
    pc   Windows XP

"I got a message to turn of the compatability in itunes. I didn't know what that was"
Me either. I've not seen such a message.
"Now when I plug in my ipod I see this new screen but can't see the actual playlists that are on my ipod."
You are probably referring to the summary screen.
To see the music on your iPod, click on it in the source pane. Click on the disclosure triangle to the left of it until it points downward and you should see the playlists underneath.
"all I want to do is manually delete some songs from my ipod."
If you have the iPod set to manually manage your songs, and you want to delete the song from the iPod only, then select the iPod in the source list of iTunes and click on "music" which should be displayed underneath. Highlight the song(s) you no longer want on the iPod, right click and select "clear".

  • I've just signed up to iTunes Match as I have songs on my iPhone 4 which wont sync with iTunes as they are from CDs but I can't see my music in the cloud now. Anyone had the same problem and have an easy fix?

I've just signed up to iTunes Match as I have songs on my iPhone 4 which wont sync with iTunes as they are from CDs but I can't see my music in the cloud now. Anyone had the same problem and have an easy fix?

    What fixed it for me:
On your computer, open iTunes > My iPhone (or whatever name you gave your iPhone) > "Music" page
    Uncheck "Sync Music"
    Click "Sync" button (bottom right)
    Let it run and finish
Uncheck the box for every song, playlist, etc.
Click "Sync" button (bottom right) (This step may be unnecessary, but I did it and got the result I wanted.)
    Let it run and finish
Check the boxes for the music you want on your iPhone
    Click "Sync" button (bottom right)
    Let it run and finish
See if that doesn't work for you.  I tried a lot of things that did nothing, but this seems to have fixed it, and quickly.
