Can't see my USB Hard drive in finder...

I have a 400gb freecom external USB hard drive. It is formatted for mac, and was running fine until today. I can see it in my Volumes folder but it doesnt appear on my desktop or in the sidebar in finder. I can eject it if i click the option button in the finder taskbar when i'm in the volumes folder but apart from that its as though it doesnt exist. any suggestions...

hi... i just tried that and nothing... it just comes up with that no entry kinda icon and wont let me mount it. I can still access all the files but i have to go into my volumes folder to do it.. which makes putting anything on the HD very awkward... it just won't appear in the finder or desktop... any other ideas?

  • [SCHROOT] Can't see my USB hard drive

    Hi
I use an schroot environment to run 32 bit applications on my arch64 system.
All runs well, but I have a problem I don't know how to solve myself.
I can't see my USB harddrives from inside the chroot system, so , for example 32 bit browsers can't save files on my USB hd.
I tried to mount with the "--bind" option the HD :
    sudo mount --bind /media/HD /opt/arch32/media/HD
Reading the HD with "ls /opt/arch32/media/HD" works outside the chroot, but then when I try to read the HD with "ls /media/HD" from inside the chroot I get a "PERMISSION DENIED" error.
I don't know what to do. How am I supposed to see my USB hds from inside the chroot system?
    Thanks
    Marcello

I don't know to be honest, it's the first time that I do such a thing (chroot) , and I never tried a 32 on 32 bit chroot system

  • Can't see external exFAT hard drive in finder - but can see it under disk utility

    I have tried it all.
Running Mac Air OS X Lion 10.7.3 - connected to wifi network via 3TB Time Capsule. Just bought an external HDD for moving around. Formatted as exFAT and loaded files from a friends Windows 7 PC. Tried to plug into TC but couldn't see it neither in Finder nor Time Machine. Then plugged it directly into Mac Air, still not visible under Finder. Tried the following without much success either:
    - Used the Verify & Repair functions in Disc Utility: No errors found
    - Tried to Mount in Disc Utility: Refused (advised to run First Aid) - Ran first aid twice and still can't mount
    - Used various apple scripts to unhide it: still not visible
    - Went to Finder - Go - Computer: Still not visible
I'm now creating an image of the disc with the hope that I can mount the disc and acccess the files in it. Should this not work (and I have a strange feeling that it wont), what can I do (without the need to format the drive?)
    Thanks

    try this:
use [_*Path Finder*_|http://www.cocoatech.com> (30 days trial period) to mount the drive and +get info+.
find the entry for *alias bit*. if the box is checked, uncheck it

  • Can you share a USB hard drive over the network through an Airport Express?

After asking a few individuals at my local Apple Store, I have been consistantly told that I can plug in a usb hard drive into the bottom of my airport express and share it over the network.
However, after making sure my airport express has the latest firmware (6.3) and even donwloading and installing the airport disk utility I still am not having any luck getting my HFS (journaled) usb 2.0 hard drive to be visible on the network.
I have also noticed that when following the instructions on this apple support document (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AirportUtility/5.1/en/ap2108.html) that when I get to step 3, the option to click disks is grayed out. I assume this supports my theory that the airport express won't share hard drives, can anyone confirm?
Am I doing something wrong? Or were the reps at my store mistaken and the only hardware that can share a hard drive is the airport extreme not express?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the swift reply.
Continuing my investigation I started to come to the conclusion you just mentioned. I am surprised none of the staff at my store realized this. However, at least I know now.
The basis for me looking to this is... With leopard on the eve of its release, I wanted to get a large network accessible storage solution that would allow my wife's and I's Macbook pros to use time machine on the network drive when we were at home. Since we rarely use our laptops while sitting at a desk connected to an external drive, I figured this would be a great idea and started to look into various NAS solutions.
Surprisingly, most generic (netgear, western digital) network drives require you use proprietary software to connect to them, and are only compatible with windows xp. After seeing the options the airport extreme opens up in terms of network storage I figured it would be the best bet.
Do you have any other suggestions besides getting an airport extreme? I would rather not have to buy a full blown mac that I have to leave on 24/7 to share the drives. Or do you see any possible pitfalls to this idea? Such as, would time machine forget to use the network drive after a while since it wouldn't always be available to it when away from home?

  • I can't see my external hard drive on the network.

I can't see my external hard drive on the network. I have a WRT160NL router with USB. I plugged the drive in the USB and set up a share in the router config.

Did you map the drive? It won't show up in Explorer automatically like a jump drive or an external drive plugged directly into the PC will.
You didn't mention the OS you're running, but what you want to do is choose "Map a network drive" and you'll see the router listed as a network device. Click on it and you should see the external drive listed. You can map it from there.

can I encrypt a USB hard drive that's not for time machine?

Yes, if it has the GUID Partition Map Scheme, but only by erasing it and choosing a new format.

  • MBP 5.5 can't see my new Hard drive

MBP 5.5 can't see my new Hard drive even though its running Mavericks off the new Hard Drive through a usb cradle

I've seen suffienct posts on this site to not argue about the problems with SATA cables, however it sounds like what you're saying is that the SATA cable is bandwidth limited. The types of things I remember reading about are actual breaks in the cable, rendering it useless for all drives, or the insulation wearing off. In the latter, it's on units where the cable crosses over an optical drive and starts intermittently shorting out on the case. If this happens the user typically gets data corruption, but the drive is usually seen and visible.
On the other hand, I do software development and we have to be able to boot numerous versions of MacOS. For reasons known only to God (and Apple, I hope) once in a while the NVRAM seems to get mixed up and ends up being unable to see the boot drive. Doing the resets always corrects the problem.
I wouldn't dismiss your recommendation of replacing the cable, but the resets are free and easily done.
Another freebee to try would be to hold down the "alt' key before powering on the unit, turn on the power, and then, while holding down the alt key, see if the drive shows up as a bootable drive. This will only work if there's an OS installed on the drive.
In my opinion, it's always best to try the free things before going out and buying anything.

  • I can't see my external hard drive connected to my TC

I can't see my external hard drive connected to my TC, I have connected to the USB port on my TC but cannot see it , any ideas

    Hello Bob,
I have a powered hub plugged into my Time Capsule.
Into the powered hub I have a printer; printer works fine.
Into the powered hub I have an ExFAT formatted disk.
The ExFAT disk is seen in the AirPort Utility as an "AirPort Disk".
I cannot see the ExFAT disk in Finder or in Window's "My Computer".
When I plug the ExFAT drive directly into Mac or Windows computers the drive is seen in Finder and My Computer.
When the ExFAT drive is plugged directly into Mac or Windows both can read and write files.
Do you think that I need to format the USB ExFAT drive as FAT 32?
I have heard mention "need to map the drive". Do you think this would help?
    Thank you for your time.

  • I can't mount a USB Hard Drive...can you?

I can't mount a USB hard drive on MAC or PC. Mac it does not mount - PC won't accept password.
    Does it even work?
AirPort Extreme n   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   PC too

I just bought the Airport Extreme 802.11n and a WD MyBook Essential Edition 500GB to use with it as a shared disk. Reformatted it on my Mac and it works fine, but can't get Airport Disk Utility to see it. I've tried resetting everything, but no go.
The improved range compared to my old Airport Extreme 802.11b/g is great, but I've wasted my money on the disk if the Airport can't connect to it.
Why was there no explanation anywhere in the specifications that this new Airport only works with some USB disks? The way it's written is clearly designed to make you think that any external HD that connects to a USB port will work.
I too would welcome any thoughts on how to get the HD to work with Airport. Thanks.

  • Boot Camp with Win 8 Can't See The USB External Drive [MBR with NTFS, Fat32, HFS Partitions]

Hi. When I boot to Boot Camp with the latest Apple Windows Support drivers can't see my USB Flash Drive, DVD and OS X volumes but not my USB external drive that has an MBR partition scheme (using iPartition from GUID) and in there it has different volumes [HFS when I boot to Snow Leopard, Fat32, NTFS]. What can I do with Boot Camp to make it see my USB external drive and why isn't it seeing the USB when it can see the USB flash drive both use USB?
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

  • Can I Connect a USB Hard Drive Directly to the IX4-300D?

I need to copy large amounts of data from a USB hard drive to the IX4-300D. So can I connect the USB hard drive directly to the USB port on the IX4-300D?
If "yes", how does the USB hard drive show up in Windows so I can select the file to copy?

    Hi exceptionalht,
The USB ports are intended for external storage devices such as flash drives and USB hard drives. Once you connect the hard drive to the USB port, the device's content will show up as a new share in the Shares page. You should be able to map that share in Windows or have Storage Manager map it automatically.
To safely remove the external hard drive, go to the External Storage page and click the eject icon for that device.

  • Airport "sees" USB hard drives, but Finder can't find them!

Yesterday, my iMac's Finder could see my external USB hard drive connected to AIrport, but not today. Airport sees it right now--I've checked and updated it and restarted it. Finder still can't find the drive. I click on my Airport connection in the Finder sidebar, my usual route to the hard drive, but the connection window hangs. And hangs. I need access to the files on that hard drive. Problem is, another iMac using Tiger needs access, too, so I can't disconnect arbitrarily. With that iMac, Tiger's Finder sees the files, and can access them. But not this 20" 2.4G iMac with Leopard 10.5.3. What's going on?

    floba,
the first solution, clearing the entire index and letting it rebuild, did not work.
But setting the drive in 'privacy' and then removing it did immediately work, my search window which was left open refreshed instantly to reveal my items. I'm curious however if it will stick..
i have another issue that may be completely unrelated, but maybe not..
i clear my spotlight shortcut key (command+spacebar) because it conflicts with common Adobe app commands i use. But i frequently will find that this shortcut key is RE-ENABLED. At the same time, my shortcut to use Spaces (command+f8, command+arrow keys, and command+numk keys) are CLEARED as if i had never set them. This happens consistently and is frustrating. I don't reboot very often, but i under 10.5.2 i often came home to find my computer has locked up, so it would seem these shortcuts all reset when i reboot, and i wonder if my external drive index is lost every time the drives are ejected.
Vista's completely useless search features were a main reason i gave my PC's away and bought macs. I'm obviously finding these failings frustrating on the mac. I'm even more disappointed at the news Snow Leopard is a bug fix and is selling as a separate OS. Installing additional programs is not an option, i want the OS to do what i tell it to do /rant

  • Why can I see my external hard drive?

For 2 years or more I've had an external hrad drive to back up my Imac. One day I got a message that there had not beeb a back up for for a really long time  ( I have it on automatic).
Ever since, I have not been able to see the external hard drive on mi Imac and have not been able to do regular back ups.
First I turned off, on, restart computer and tried to see if it showed up on another computer, which it did.
What could the problem be?  It was working just fine.
    Please help
    Thanks

EHD's can crash. First thing I'd recommend though is to do 2-3 SMC resets. Shut down the computer, then remove the power cord from both the wall plug and back of the computer, wait 15-20 seconds and restart normally and test.
If that fails use another cable to connect the drive, if that fails open Disk Utility and see if the EHD can be seen. If that fails then replace the drive. I would STRONGLY recommend 2 backups, use Time Machine on disk 1 and then use a create a clone using either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner on the other drive. When it comes to backing up, redundancy is smart. Would you trust your bank if  they only had one form of backup of all your money??
