Can't See Time Capsule from PC

I have two PCs hard wired into a Time Capsule. When I set them up a few months ago, both PCs added the Capsule as a Z drive. Now the drive is gone from one PC but still accessible from the other.

Try this:
First see if you can see the TC on your network and if so, click on "computer" and then "map network drive". Select Z if it is not already selected, and then browse. Pick the TC and click through. Close the window and click on "computer" again and you may see it. It worked for me.

Yes. See this thread about how to access the disk attached to a Time Capsule.  Access to the Time Capsule itself can be done similarly.

can i unplug time capsule from the ethernet cable and still use it??

I have tried to extend that wireless line but as soon as i remove the LAN cable i have no internet connection anymore. So basically, does the TC get the signal wireless from the router??
The Time Capsule can wirelessly extend a wireless signal....but only if it is being provided by another Apple AirPort wireless router.
If the "main" rotuer there is not an Apple AirPort router,  you will need to connect to the network using a wired Ethernet connection.

  • Mac can not see time capsule

i bought Time capsule over Amazon .Air port works fine , but my mac can not see time capsule,,,sometime does , but most of the time not...
It is a problem with time capsule i have 2 T new generation

You don't mention what type of Mac you have, but is there any way you can move it around to see if that affects the problem?  If you hold down an "option" key while you pull down the AirPort/WiFi menu bar item, you should see a value labeled "RSSI" that is the strength of the wireless signal.   A value closer to zero is stronger.  For example, -30 is decent but -80 is poor.

  • I can access my time capsule from my mac mini at work but my macbook can only access it from my home network. how do i fix this?

I have a Mac Mini and a MacBook, both were configured at home to access the time capsule. I have since moved the mini to work to use there and it has no issues looking up files on the time capsule which remains at home. The macbook whoever can only access the time capsule from within the home network. I can't seem to find what I may have done differently. Can anybody help?
Not sure if your allowed to post two questions, but it's may be related. I find that accessing the files on the time capsule from the mac mini or the macbook is very slow. Accessing the same files from an older HP laptop is as fast as accessing its own hard drive. How can I speed up the accessing of these files from my apple products. One would think they would work fast and the 'windows' computers would take minutes to map the drive each time...
    Thanks for any help.

I have since moved the mini to work to use there and it has no issues looking up files on the time capsule which remains at home.
This cannot happen by magic though.. you must have configured the mini to access the TC remotely.. which method are you using, BTMM and iCloud??
The macbook whoever can only access the time capsule from within the home network. I can't seem to find what I may have done differently. Can anybody help?
How is the Macbook configured to access the TC remotely?? If you are trying to use BTMM and iCloud, then it might be a case that with the mini running the connection cannot be done by more than one computer at a time.. this is generally the case although I do not know if that is specifically true of BTMM method. Try turning off the mini and leave it off.. (off not standby)... then reboot the TC when you are at home.. and then try and connect the laptop to the TC the next morning from work. See if it is then able to capture the connection.. if so start up the mini and I suspect it now will not be able to connect.. that will prove that the TC cannot cope with two remote connections.
There also could be another factor in here. If you are accessing the laptop via the same router as the mini is on.. then actually you cannot have two users mount the same files on a TC.. from the same IP address.. as far as the TC is concerned both devices have identical IP, that is the public IP of the work location router.
If you happen to not be using BTMM then the situation is even easier.. you cannot make two different devices connect to the same network resource using the same port. That is the failing of the NAT system.. one device uses the port then it cannot be used by a second device. You will need to do some fancy footwork and use a different port.
Anyhow tell us exactly how you are doing remote access.. otherwise I am just guessing.

Are you talking about files you are hosting on the TC?? Not Time Machine backups??
Can you tell me exactly how you are accessing the TC.. please do a test..
Copy a file to the TC and from the TC using the Laptop.. Use a single very large file, eg 1GB movie file.
Give me a read and write speed.. you can use activity monitor to give me an aprox average speed as well as peak.
Do the same test from the same computer with wireless turned off running ethernet.
Then do the tests from the mini.. same ones.. copy large file to and from the TC by ethernet and by wireless.. when using ethernet make sure wireless is off.
I strongly recommend you set IPv6 to link local only for your wireless and ethernet setup in the Mac.
    eg
Now do the test from the HP laptop and give me the results from that.
Is the issue wireless only.. ??
Then you might need to spend a bit of time fixing the wireless in the Macs.. you can run wireless diagnostics in Mavericks.

  • Can I share the files on the time capsule for all of the macs on my network and can I access time capsule from my laptop while out of town?

I have a iMac desktop and a macbook pro.  If I purchase a time capsule, can I use it as the central location for my files for both computers?  Can I access the files on the time capsule from my macbook pro when I am out of town?

Yes, with some provisos.. it is designed as primarily a backup location for Time Machine.
Look at Pondini who has a great deal of info in his KB of all things Time Machine .. as well as Time Capsule.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Remote access is via BTMM and iCloud.. just look it up.
But the TC must be the main router in the network for it to work.

  • Airport Utility can't see Time Capsule

Just purchased an almost new Time Capsule from a friend.
But Airport Utility cannot see the devise, therefore I cannot set it up.
    Ideas, hints.. help anyone?

Hello Marta Santos. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
When having difficulties accessing the Time Capsule (TC) thru the AirPort Utility, try the following, in order checking accessibility with the AirPort Utility after each step:
o Check the local connection. If you are trying to access the TC wirelessly, make sure that you are connected to its wireless network before running the AirPort Utility to administer it. If you are still unable to access it with the utility, temporarily connect your computer directly using an Ethernet cable to one of the TC's LAN (opposing arrows) ports.
o Power cycle the base station. Remove the power adapter's plug from the power outlet, and then, wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.
o Perform a "hard" reset on the TC.

  • IPhone 4S Can't see Time Capsule Wireless after IO6 update

My iphone can't see my Time Capsule wireless network after upgrading to IO6.  My iPad3 works fine after upgrade.
I determined that if I change settings on the TC to 802.11N(b/g) compatible it can see/connect.
Seems to be a problem with the 802.11 5GHz band that the iPhone can't see after the IOS6 update.
Not sure if this is the same issue that others are seeing but could be worth a try to change your router's radio config.
Hopefully Apple sorts this out soon.
Very annoying to upgrade and have existing networking break!!!!
Bad Karma and I just ordered 2 new iPhone 5's

Still having this issue - used to be able to connect prior to this update - The iPhone has no problem auto joining the local Cable WiFi - but still doesn't show the Time Capsule WiFi SSID's in the list. iPad and three other Macs see and can join the Time Capsule WiFi.

  • Macbook can't see time capsule through airport utility; powerbook can.

This question probably applies to Airport Extremes as well as Time Capsules, but I happened to see it with a new TC.
My Time Capsule came in yesterday. My plan was to bridge it into my existing network to serve 802.11n over 5ghz. I did the initial setup using a 12" powerbook and it worked fine. I set the Time Capsule in bridge mode and for 802.11n 5ghz, plugged it into my network, and reset. The light on the TC turned green and all looked like it was working. At least, until I tried to connect through my Macbook Pro.
I installed the Airport Utility software that came with the TC, rebooted, then launched Airport Utility -- and it couldn't find any devices. It can, however, see the Airport's wireless network. After a reboot of the TC, it can also connect to the Airport's wireless network. I can get to the internet and the local network, but cannot see the Airport through Airport Utility and cannot see the Time Capsule disk. It's as if Bonjour is being blocked between my laptop and the Airport. This happens whether I'm connected to the TC wirelessly or wired.
I've tried restoring to factory defaults and starting over (I still can't see the TC, even after a hard reset) and I've tried a hard reset of the TC (I had to, actually -- it hung during startup several times). In each case, the powerbook can see it, but the macbook can't. I'm out of things to try. If I can't get this resolved soon, I'm going to have to return the TC, since it's useless if I can't access the disk.
I was planning on upgrading the two computers to Leopard over the weekend, then use the TC for Time Machine for both computers, but if it's not working for Tiger I'm worried that it won't work for Leopard, either.
Is there any variable anyone knows of that blocks a computer from seeing an base station through the Airport Utility? A non-obvious firewall setting, perhaps, or something that could be blocking Bonjour? Does Airport detection even use Bonjour, or am I on the wrong track?
    Thanks

An update: I can see the Airport configuration of the TC through my Macbook if I pick File->Configure Other... on the Airport Utility, and then put in the IP address. Which leads me to believe that it's a Bonjour issue, but I haven't figured out more than that.
Of course, the TC is still useless for Time Machine if I can't get to the disk, so the problem remains.

  • Can't see Time Capsule disk

Hi there, need some help. I can no longer see my Time Capusle disk (and it's not performing back ups). I've just moved and set my time capsule back up as my wireless router last night. All seemed to be working fine. Came home from work today and could here strange noises coming from it. Couldn't see the disk in finder, disk utility or in airport utility (wireless working fine). Restarted it. Airport now tells me that there is a problem with the disk in the TC and that it needs repair. Still can't see the disk to reapir it in Airport Utility, Disk Utility or Finder. Have plugged in via ethernet and still nothing.
    Any advice?
    I'm running Mac OSX 10.7.5

So far, everything points to an internal hard drive failure. Unfortunately, Disk Utility will not be able to repair a drive that has failed mechanically.
If you have an Apple Store or servicer in your area, you should take the Time Capsule to them to let them have a look.
If the Time Capsule is in warranty or covered by AppleCare, Apple will likely replace the entire Time Capsule for you...but I would not expect them to offer to retrieve any of the data on the failed hard drive.
If the Time Capsule is not covered by warranty, you can open it up and attempt to pull the drive and replace it yourself....or have a shop do it for you. A data restoration service might be able to retrieve some of the data on the failed drive, but the cost of this procedure will shock you.
I don't go inside the Time Capsule much anymore, but our resident guru LaPastenague does this on a regular basis. Hopefully, he will see this post and offer his comments and advice.
He has offered excellent tips and instructions on repairs in this document:

  • 1 macbook can't see time capsule?

    in the household we have 2 macbook's 1 pro 17" & 1 air & 2 iphone's 2G's
I originally set up the time capsule to be 802.11n only (5 Ghz), to keep the
speed at the highest level, even though the 2 iphones couldn't connect (802.
    11 b/g only).
today, after the macbook pro 17" was asleep, upon awakening it could not see
the network (it had been connected and running fine for over 6 months), although
it could see neighbors networks? the macbook air was still connected to the network,
    the network working properly?
I repaired permissions on the macbook pro 17", re-booted, and still could not see the
network, although the macbook pro still remained connected? I re-booted the time
capsule, still no connection on the macbook pro 17"?
I changed the radio mode of the network to 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible) and the
macbook pro 17" saw the network and could connect, along with the macbook air and of
    course now both iphones?
    why would this happen?
I originally set up the network at the 802.11n only (5 Ghz) radio mode to eliminate
interference and keep the iphone from degrading the through put to b/g speeds, as
we move large files back and forth between computers, so I'd really like to go back to
802.11n only (5 Ghz) speed if possible, but can't figure out why the macbook pro 17"
won't/can't see this speed even though it has in the past for over 6 months?
both macbooks are running leopard 10.5.6, the 17" is 2.4 Ghz, teh air is 1.6 Ghz.
no software or modem updates have been done during or before this problem period.
    any help would be appreciated...

after configuring the network back to 802.11n only (5 Ghz), magically the network re appeared on the 17" macbook pro, everything was fine for the last week, then mysteriously the 17" pro lost any vision of the 802.11n only (5 Ghz) network, albeit the macbook air kept connection and through put was fine?
after turning the airport off/on on the 17" and then manually trying to connect, the network (still 802.11n only (5 Ghz) appeared again on the selectable airport of the 17"?
    anyone got help?
is this not posted in the right forum?

  • Vista can't see time capsule

    Hi everyone
Just got a new time-capsule. Set it up within minutes on our 4 macs, but the Vista PC can't see it. Installed the airport utility software, but to no avail. It just does not show up in the available networks list.
    Any ideas?

I was having similar problems with an XP machine - could not see the time capsule via Airport Utility. I just finished a call with Apple support and they suggested it had to do with the security settings - but that was as much as they could offer at the time ... but they were right!
Via the macbook, I started by knocking down the security to nothing at all (I had previously configured the access by MAC address so didn't feel all that vulnerable for the few minutes I'd be making changes). Originally, it was WPA2 and the XP machine could see the network but never get an address.
After the time capsule updated and, I was able to rescan and see it for the first time on the XP machine. From there, I configured the time capsule via the XP machine using Airport Utility (and if this works for you, via the Vista machine). I set it up for WPA/WPA2 personal. I tried WPA from the start and for the first time, I got a message indicating that the card in my XP machine didn't support WPA2.
Anyway, after updating those settings and letting the time capsule recycle, I was all set and secure on the XP machine. From there, all I had to was go back and connect and supply a password on the macbook to re-establish a connection there.

  • Setup problem and now can't see time capsule

On Friday, I used Airport utility to set up Time Capsule. There was a choice saying "do you want to add on to or replace and existing router?", to which I said yes. at the end of the setup, Airport asked "Do you want to replace the existing router now?" and I said no because I don't want to replace it yet. That seemed to confuse Time Capsule.
On Monday, I disconnected the existing router and I tried to hook Time Capsule up to the DSL modem. Time Capsule didn't recognize the internet and my computer wouldn't recognize TC. Time Capsule is now not connected to anything (I reinstalled the old router and it is working fine). My computer can't see it an neither can Airport Utility. I tried to rescan but nothing comes up. Does anyone know what is wrong and how I fix it?

The only way to tell is remove the drive and test it.
I would do a reset of the TC first. Just hold in the reset button for about 7sec and wait for it to reboot. A reset will not do anything to your files. Then try again to access. If no luck the drive is probably dead. Either replace the whole TC under warranty.. or if you have no warranty left/drive contains valuable info, open up the TC.. plenty of sites explain how to upgrade to a bigger drive. just follow them. Put the drive into a USB carrier and plug it in or even better use it directly on sata port.

  • Seeing Time Capsule from Apple TV

    Hi all,
I'm trying to get my Apple TV to see the files being shared on Time Capsule.  I have no problem seeing and sharing files between my Macs and can happily play media files using a Western Digital player, but I can't seem to find a way of getting my Apple TV to see the Time Capsule share.  Have I just missed the point and Apple TV can't do that and I can only share via AirPlay or iTunes?  I hope not as that would be a huge failing for the Apple TV as it's internet connection is the Time Capsule.
    All help welcome!
    Cheers.

happily play media files using a Western Digital player,
Tick. It is a media player.

Tick.. Apple TV is not a media player.. it is a sort of connector box between a media player.. ie itunes and your TV. You can think of it as a wireless or ethernet to hdmi converter. With a slightly complicated interface.
ATV1 and ATV2 were immensely popular because they could be hacked. ie jailbreak into a useful media player.. that is why ATV2 command prices 2x or 3x the new ATV3 which so far has resisted all attempts to make it useful.
BTW Apple see the failure in being able to hack the earlier ones.. when you sign up to Apple you sign up to the whole.. or nothing. So the way to play media is to pay for it via itunes.. thus making apple considerably richer.
