Can't see wireless network with Windows Vista

I have the Airport Extreme N and two PCs, one with W XP and one with W Vista. Everything works fine with the XP PC. On the Vista PC, I can connect to the network with LAN, but I can’t see the wireless network.
The W Vista PC can identify other networks around the block, so the Broadcom 802.11g network adapter seems to work fine. The wireless runs on channel 13, which is OK for the XP PC. I have installed the latest update for the Airport Extreme.
Any suggestions to what I can do to get the W Vista PC working on wireless?
Best, Kasper

Hi,
I also have the same problem.
My belkin wirelss router is set to channel 13, therefore my macbook cannot see this network when it search's, for the above reasons.
However unlike the situation above I am unable to change from channel 13 as we have discovered in the past that this is the only channel that is not in use by other networks around our area. The rest gave us interferance troubles.
I have a number of windows laptops in the house and there is a setting that you can change so the laptop will search for channel 13. I was wondering if anyone is aware of a setting on the macbook that will make the airport card search for 1 - 13 not just channels 1 - 10 as it is now.
I thought I would add this question to this topic as it is very similar. I hope I was correct in doing so.
Thanks,
Josh

When will HP have the driver to download?

  • WRT150N - can't see wireless network

    Hello,
I just got a WRT150N and I managed to set up a network and I can connect via Ethernet. However, when I enable the wireless settings (mixed mode), neither my laptop nor my PS3 can see the network. What's odd is that the wireless diode is off but the Security is on. Am I missing something?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Try to change these settings on your Router and check if you are able to locate the Wireless Network on your Wireless Computer and on your PS3.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbors network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Can't see Mac network with JFileChooser

    Greetings
I am using a standard JFileChooser to select files and directories in my application running on MacOSX Snow Leopard. My problem is that I can't see my network using JFileChooser. I can see all the other Macs on my network using Finder or a standard Mac file browser but not on JFileChooser. I suspect I am missing something really simple but at the moment I am at a loss.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

  • Hints and tips for creating a wireless network with windows

    G'day All,
I am trying to setup up a wireless network so I can share large files between my Macbook Pro and my housemates Windows XP machine.
I have no problem actually creating the network on my Macbook Pro and his windows machine can "see" it butI'm having trouble with my housemate's machine actually logging into my network (he can see it though).
I happy for him to dump the files (camera raw files) into my Drop box if it's the easiest solution.
Can anyone provide me with a basic step by step guide on what settings i need to fiddle with on both machines for it to work.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Setting up a wireless network with windows XP PC

I may be getting a mac computer later this year & would like to know how to set up a wireless network between the mac & a windows XP PC. The PC has a DSL modem attached to it with a yellow line going from modem to PC & another Grey line going from the modem to the back of a phone in our kitchen. Our house is fairly big, it is one story but the rooms are sprawled out with a lot of clutter. I would like to have reliable internet access on my mac, & if it is a macbook pro I would like to be able to get to the internet throughout the house. The most important thing is stable reliable internet access as I am taking online classes. I would probably take the macbook pro into a bedroom or other adjacent room. The bedroom is further away, through 2 or 3 walls. The Adjacent rooms is one wall way.
I know this seems very basic, but I need a lot of help with this as I have never used a mac before (have been a windows user) & have never used more than just the one PC in the house, let alone a wireless network.
my mother along with I are both taking online classes, so sometimes there is competition for the the 1 computer & with my graphic design degree a mac has been recommended to me. So we are finding it would be easier to have more than one computer in the house so we can access our classes anytime.
So anyone, can this be done without breaking the bank?

I'm guessing that Modem was provided by your Internet Service Provider ?
They are the best people to talk to about upgrading that Modem to a Wireless one.
Usually if you're running a modem and phone from the same DSL line there's a small splitter box that plugs into the phone socket and then one wire connects your modem and another your phone. Picture below - if you do have one of these then post back and we can give better advice on a wireless modem to replace your current one.

  • Macbook Pro can't see wireless network or connect to it, but iPhone can!?!?

    ok here"s the deal:
I got my macbook pro in the states through school and it has been working fine ever since. I now just moved back home to Germany and for some odd reason the wireless network at home at my mom's won't appear in my "join network" list.
I have tried diagnostics and advanced stuff, I have even typed in the network name and password into my preferred networks list manually... still nothing. When I connect the computer through an ethernet cable it works just fine. also searched and updated all my updates in case that was maybe the issue...
here's the clue. my sister and her friend both also have macbooks (not pro's though) and both also run leopard and both of their laptops can see and connect to our wireless just fine. ALSO I have an iPhone, I purchased in the states and it can see and connect without any issues as well..
I have called the German Apple support people, but they are absolutely useless and there are exactly 2 (!!!) genius bars here in Germany. one 4h and one 6h from where I live... sighs
this is what I found in my about section, in case anybody knows what this means:
    +AirPort Card Information:+
    +Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x8C)+
    +Wireless Card Locale: USA+
    +Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.91.21)+
is it because it says "USA" and I am now in Germany? but how stupid would that be? other people that bring their American macs over don't have issues either... right???
    so yeah... HELP??? ANYBODY??? PLEASE???

    Hello,
I had the same problem when I was traveling with my 2009 Macbook Pro. I am on a French ship and my MacBook was bought in the US. We have a wireless gaming network to play Call of Duty on that is set up on a LinkSys router. I was so frustrated because everyone else here could connect and play without a problem. My iPhone would even connect to the network but my MacBook Airport card wouldn't even recognize the network.
It turns out that some countries use different Wifi channels. The Airport card in the US MacBook Pro is setup to only recognize channels 1-11. The European LinkSys router was broadcasting on channel 13 which is why my MacBook couldn't even see it. I changed the wireless channel on the router to 10 and now everything works great. I hope this works for you.
    Cheers
P.S. - The US MBP can only recognize channels 1-11 on a standard 2.4GHz network. To see what channels your Airport Card will recognize, open System Profiler (located in the Utilities folder) and find the "Network" heading in the column on the left. Click "Airport" and it should display all of the supported channels in the info box to the right.

  • 24" can't see wireless network

Out of the box I was able to get online using my wireless network.
I then moved the iMac to my desk and transfered files from a G4 desktop using the Migration software. Everything went pretty well and everything seemed to be working fine...EXCEPT the iMac would no longer connect to wireless network no matter how many times checked the settings. Ran Disk Utility. No luck.
It sees the network name, but won't connect. I know the network is good because I can connect on my TiMac laptop. I had Verizon check the line and that's OK. Again, I was able to connect before I did migration.
Other factors: USB Brother 5150DLT printer and Mercury Firewire external HD connected
    What's Up?
Also, I called Apple, but they only helped me mess things up by telling me to reinstall my OS using the archiving...after that things really got messy. After all these years of using a Mac, I should know that reinstalling OS only causes more problems...I think the tech support people like to play practical jokes by telling users to do this as a last resort.
I finally got the system back to where we started, but still not network connection.
Open to suggestions, before I take it in.
24" iMac intel core   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    auapplemac,
Unfortunately, this appears to be happening too frequently to new 24-inch owners. Since it was fine, and then suddenly not, I think we can safely blame it on the 10.4.8 update, as has happened to some others. At least you had connectivity out of the box, some 24-inch have not, and those seem to be tougher to resolve.
If you open System Preferences to Network and then select Network Status, while you're turning on AirPort you should be able to see that somehow your AirPort is self-assigning a useless IP address with the result that a connection can not be completed. [I suppose if you aren't seeing this, your problem is different than mine was.]
Apple has a "solution" that may or may not resolve this for you, but if not, it does appear to be a first step on the way to an almost total restoration of functionality: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482
For some additional pieces of the puzzle, try following that up with a couple other things that others suggested and that I found did help me get back to a level of functionality that I can live with. It does take some fiddling, and I redid most everything twice (or more), and did seem to benefit from downloading and running the 10.4.8 Combo Update a second time, even after I thought I'd done all I could. I don't think anyone at Apple is prepared to put that much effort into it, but hopefully you'll find it worthwhile. If not, sorry I can't offer more.

  • Mac can't see wireless network - have checked other posts but no  solution!

I have scanned many posts on this topic but have not seen my specific problem resolved, so I'm starting a new post. Here's all the facts and things I've checked.
    Hardware Details
    iMac 1.25 GHz G4
Airport Extreme card (shows up in system profiler)
    Linksys 802.11g router
    Network Details
    WPA Personal
Have never had a problem using this network. 2 PC's an 2 Macs regularly connect. Right now one PC and my wife's MacBook Pro are using the network.
The iMac was seeing the network yesterday - today it can't even see it!
Per the advice from many helpful posters, I have checked that mac addressing is disabled on the router.
I have checked that appletalk is active on the iMac
I have restarted the iMac several times after applying various changes.
This is a very perplexing problem. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi kmacwilliam,
I am having a similar issues with yours, my MBP and MB couldnt not stay connect to the dlink router recently. But the PC's been working fine all the time. The wireless would drop and could not see the network again while my neighbours' networks were still displaying. Even restarting the MBP and router wont see my wireless network.
You can try these things and see if it works for you, it's worked for me for time being. Please post back the outcomes:
    1. Delete any airport-related passwords in the "Keychain" so no airport passwords are stored
    2. Shut down the iMac
    3. Reset the PMU in your case for the G4 iMac, you may need to open your back case to reset it
    3. Turn on your iMac and you should see the network again
I am suspecting this might be software issue, hope this works for you.

  • Macbook CAN'T see wireless network while others can

    Hey,
I've searched everywhere and can't find the answer. I have a macbook and am visiting Norway from the US. I am in an office with several people and they can all "see" the wireless network but I cannot. BUT I can see several other networks from neighboring offices. I can connect just fine to the wireless connection at my hotel. Also I have no problem "seeing" and signing on to the office's wireless using my iphone, but as I said my macbook doesn't even see it. I tried "other" and typed in the name and password (several times) but to no advail.
    Any suggestions o wise ones?
    Don Anderson

I do this at home for enhanced security.
Unfortunately it does not add any security. The network name is still broadcast between any connected clients and the base station. Therefore the network name is easily discovered in just a few seconds.

  • PCs can't see Wireless Network

    Hi all,
I've just replaced a Linksys wireless router with a new Airport Extreme base station. I configured up the box okay so our two Apples (Intel iMac and older iBook) are connecting fine. However, my our PCs can't even detect the network.
I know the PC wireless cards are working because they can detect multiple other wireless networks in our apartment block. They used to be able to detect the old Linksys router. I've rescanned multiple times.
The AE is in exactly the same place as the old Linksys box that the PCs could pick up before, so it is unlikely to be a physical obstruction.
I rechecked my settings (multiple times) and I don't have the "closed" network box checked. I've tried renaming the network and base station several times. There are no spaces in the network name. The AE is transmitting on the n (plus b/g compatible) setting. There is no network security running.
But still the PCs can't even detect the network.
Can anyone suggest other things to try please.

    Hi,
I have the same problem - I note that the PC remains connected to the airport extreme when you change back to n(b+g compatible) - however the pc fails to see the network if you perform a scan - even though it is connected to it !
Do you think apple will come up with a fix for this - it is a bit of a procedure every time I need to use a PC to access the internet !

I turned off my power strip the other night which turned off my Lynksys WRT54G router. When I fired it all back up, my laptop can't see the router. My blue-ray was connected to the router via ethernet for Netflix and it is still able to work through the ethernet cable and I can get online with my laptop with an ethernet cable, it just won't see my network wirlessly. It can see neighboring wireless networks though. Help!

Advise you to log on to wireless router configuration page and recheck the wireless configuration again, try to find out any incorrect configuration. If need more ideas, can take a look on this wireless network troubleshooting tips article, hope able to help you more.

  • Airport + Wired Network - Can't see Wired Network with new Ethernet Switch.

I have an Airport Exteme Wireless network work in my home with a base station and one base station as a WDS. I had an old Linksys wired router that I used as an etherent hub for my wired computers. It died the other day.
Since I figured I already have a router with Airport, I went out and bought a NetGear 5 port gigabit switch to hook the wired part of my network back up. Since I have done this, I can see all the computers on the wireless Macs, but cannot see the network at all on the wired Macs.
    My configuration is:
Cable modem -- > Airport (WAN) --> Netgear wired etheret switch (LAN).
I'm checking the "distribute IP addresses" from the airport. All the compters can access the internet, but my wired Macs can't communicate on the network. I'm darned but I can't seem to figure this out.
For all you networking gurus out there, what am I doing wrong? I could have bought another wired router, but it seems I shouldn't have to since my Airport should be able to perform the router function to all computers but hooking it to the ethernet switch.
Any suggestions or help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

You are able to ping the printer from the wireless computer but not from wired computer.
Open router setup page. Go to wireless tab and click on Advanced wireless settings sub tab.
Make sure that AP Isolation is disabled on your router.
Also check the firewall settings on your wired computer. If there is any firewall or Anti virus installed on your wired computer then disable it and try to ping the printer IP address.
