Can't seem to completely uninstall software

Hi everybody,
I'm a a fairly recent convert to the world of Macs and haven't looked back since. Apologies if my question is a little dim or has been covered in other areas of the forum.
I'm having a little problem at the moment, which somebody can hopefully help with.
I installed a piece of software called TechTools onto my MBP but decided to uninstall to keep my machine running fast and save space. My understanding was that I simply selected the program from my Applications folder and as there is no uninstaller, just drag it and any other related icons to the trash bin before emptying. I have done so so cannot access the installed program any more.
However I don't think it has completely uninstalled as I keep getting a techtools alert about the limited free space on my HDD. This alert is annoying and was one of the reasons that I decided to ditch the software.
As I thought that I had uninstalled correctly, could somebody tell me how to make this go away please!

Hi,
There are probably several ways to uninstall Applications (if there is not an option to do so within the Application itself) but you may find this link of use...
http://www.reggieashworth.com/appdelete
I would however well recommend keeping Techtool Pro on your machine as it is a very handy piece of software which can determine various issues with your Mac. I have eDrives partitioned on my Macs which enable me to ***** my hard drives & detect problems at an early stage as well as keeping them defragged etc. It does take up a fair bit of hard drive space but can save a lot of problems in the long run.

Make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk to install software updates...
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

How do I update my iPad 2 to iOS 5, I tried going to settings, general ,software update but I can't seem to find the software update button pls help :)

Go to Settings > General > About and see what iOS version you are running.  If it is lower than 5, you won't find the software update button.  It was added when iOS 5 came out.  The current iOS is 5.1.1.  To update to the current OS, you'll need to connect to the computer you sync with (this is important - do not connect to a computer you do not sync with as you will lose you apps) and update the software in iTunes.  Once you have updated to the 5.1.1, the software update button will be in Settings going forward.  Make sure you have a lot of time.  Updating from below 5 to 5 or higher is a somewhat lengthy process.

  • How can I properly and COMPLETELY uninstall Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 from my Mac?

OK, so yeah, I *SHOULD* have known better...
A few months back, against my better judgement and without doing the proper due diligence, I tried installing Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 onto the primary drive of my MacBook Pro (running MacOS 10.6.8).
    The tell-tail signs:
    PROBLEM #1
While there IS readily available "Tech Specs" documentation for the current Adobe Digital Editions v4.0.1 installer for MacOS (which clearly states "Mac OS X v10.8 or later" is REQUIRED), there is absolutely NO indication or similar documentation for supported system software for PREVIOUS versions of Adobe Digital Editions.
    Reference URL:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/digitaleditions/downloads.html
    PROBLEM #2a
Adobe Digital Editions v3.0 for MacOS comes as an installer (which REQUIRES admin authentication to provide root-level access to your computer).
    PROBLEM #2b
Adobe "Digital Editions 3.0 Installer" is FULLY launchable under MacOS 10.6.8 (and the installed application will require MacOS 10.7 or later).
    PROBLEM #2c
There is NO associated ("ReadMe" type) support document included on the "ADE_3.0_Installer.dmg" disc image and ZERO integrated documentation within in the installer.
    PROBLEM #2d
There is NO Adobe "Digital Editions 3.0" UNinstaller either installed as part of the "Standard" installation package OR currently downloadable from Adobe.com.
    PROBLEM #3
Adobe's ONLY MacOS solution to "Uninstall previous versions [prior to the current v4.0] of Adobe Digital Editions for Mac OS" are the following instructions:
It's necessary to have administrator privileges to complete these steps.
      1. From your user directory, locate /Applications
      2. Drag the digitaleditions1x5 folder to the Trash, and empty the Trash.

    PROBLEM #4
Adobe's "What are my contact options?" page indicates BOTH "Chat (within 90 days of registration)" and "Forums" as available "Basic Support" options for Adobe "Digital Editions" software for "Download, install, setup" help, however, "Forums" is the ONLY available choice under "Contact options" for on Adobe's "Contact Customer Care" page (for "Download, install, setup" help with Digital Editions).
    Reference URL:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html?step=ADE_downloading-installing-setting-up_s tillNeedHelp
    PROBLEM #5
The ONLY available "Basic Support" option for "How-to's & troubleshooting" help is the Adobe Forums...and this is an example of the type nonsense response (then followed by NON-response) that one might receive there:
    https://forums.adobe.com/message/6570142
[NOTE:  After MUCH searching I did, however, manage to find a potentially interesting "Let us know how we’re doing" link (under the "Our support promise" link found on the "What are my contact options? page).  I am going to send them a brief message along with a link to THIS post and hope for the best.]

    PROBLEM #6
While I did NOT realize this prior to my attempting to install Adobe Digital Editions, apparently it would require me to "activate" my computer with an Adobe ID.
[NOTE:  This information IS included in the readily accessible FAQ (and I am sure it's also found in the installer integrated software "License"), however, this is a MAJOR "feature" of this software and could be presented MUCH more prominently as an installer integrated "ReadMe" screen.]
    Reference URL:
    http://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/digital-editions/faq.html
...and, as an added bonus, there is a SIGNIFICANT "spyware" issue with this software discussed in further depth here:
    http://the-digital-reader.com/2014/10/06/adobe-spying-users-collecting-data-eboo k-libraries/
As an experienced and life-long Mac user, I really SHOULD have known better and I did have second thoughts almost immediately, but by then it was TOO LATE!!!
So, now I have this TOTAL crap, super duper DRM software that required root-level permission to install (AND I couldn't even run this installed v3.0 copy under my preferred MacOS 10.6.8 if I wanted to...but, of course, I now have ABSOLUTELY NO desire to ever use this software again), and I just want to COMPLETELY remove all traces of it from my computer!
A pretty thorough Google search yielded several so-called "solutions" that were as bad or EVEN worse than the very limited "official" resources found directly from Adobe!
Any actual, real working solutions would be VERY greatly appreciated!
Thank you SO MUCH for your time and consideration in reading!!!
    Sincerely,
    aadams77

Hmm, it shouldn't be that much of a problem. I searched my entire drive for "digital editions", and this is the whole thing:
    /Applications/Adobe Digital Editions 3.0.app
    /Users/user/Library/Caches/com.adobe.adobedigitaleditions.app
    /Users/user/Documents/Digital Editions
    /Users/user/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.adobedigitaleditions.app.plist
    /private/var/db/receipts/com.adobe.adobedigitaleditions.app.bom
    /private/var/db/receipts/com.adobe.adobedigitaleditions.app.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.adobe.DigitalEditions.plist
The application itself, three small files scattered in your user account, to unimportant installation receipt files, and another preference file in the root Library folder. Removing those should remove everything related to version 3, which is what I have installed.
Where I substituted "user" above (for the three entries of /Users/user/...), replace that with whatever the actual name of your user account is.
Edit: I double checked the installer using a small app that sorts out every file in an installer, and where each item would normally be installed. The main app is literally the only item in the installer. The receipts are created by the OS per the installer's data, and the other minor preference files are created when the app is first run. There is nothing else.

  • My MacBook Pro can't seem to upload the software for an hp c5180?

I recently had a problem scanning documents from my HP C5180 printer to my MacBook Pro. (I'm running version 10.8.4).  I looked on how to fix it on a forum, and they told me to "uninstall the software" and "reinstall" a new version.  I tried to reinstall the new version but I only got the "printer" software.  It didn't include HP Studio Pro so I could scan things.  I tried to "update" my software, but it couldn't find any updatable software.  I then went to the HP website to try to download the software, but I couldn't make my MacBook Pro update from that site as it said I alreay had the latest update.  It's been very frusterating as my scanner was working fine two weeks ago.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Shooist007, Greetings again;  You clearly know something I don't (not unusual).  It took me a while to figure this out since I have never used Terminal before.  For educating me I award you 3 gold stars (no relation to helpful answers).  Thanks.

I just bought an ipad mini with retina display. On my settings page it shows an update occurring for ios.7.0.4 with the message "Estimating time remaining..."
This update and message appeared last evening but doesn't seem to complete. It also says "downloading", but nothing is happening.
How can I complete the download or eliminate it?

If it's slow on startup it would be extensions loading or LaunchDaemons starting up.
You should have a look in:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/Extensions
You can count out anything in your home folder and it shouldn't put anything in /System as that's reserved for Apple.

Not sure of an answer to your basic question, but it may be that you can run a repair (on Windows --> Control Panel>Programs & Features and run the repair on Acrobat). If that fixes the issue, at least temporarily, at least you will not be reinstalling everything -- a real pain.
Next, open Acrobat and go to the Help to run the updates and be sure you are current. On some OSs, the updates are critical.

  • Can't completely uninstall iPlanet 6 on Windows XP

iPlanet 6 was running and working on my Windows XP box. Then, one day, it stopped working....(that's a long story). I tried to re-install it. The installation wouldn't work without first uninstalling it. So, I uninstalled it, by running the uninstall that came with the iPlanet program group. I removed the folders from the C: drive where iPlanet had been installed. I've done searches in the registry keys for "slapd" and found no occurances. I've uninstalled Netscape. I searched and removed registry keys for "netscape" and "iplanet". I rebooted. ........ And I'm still getting an error when I try to install iPlanet saying that it's already installed.
    Anyone have any ideas?

If you have reproducible steps for simulating this issue, please post in the forum.
There is a general way of cleaning up if uninstallation is unsuccessful. It seems you have tried all those. Except possibly one step: check the services, are there any services associated with the uninstalled software still lingering on? You can check this by running services.msc from start->run. Check the Service Name in properties dialog. If they are still lingering, you can delete them either from registry (search by Service Name) or running sc.exe. sc.exe comes with Windows on XP/2003. sc delete <Service name> removes the service. sc query > abc.txt will list down all services registered on the machine and their status etc. in abc.txt. HTH.

  • When wanting to remove unwanted applications from my Mac, does dragging them into the trash COMPLETELY uninstall the software?

My 2010 Macbook Pro that is running on OS X Mavericks (10.9.4) has been running rather slow lately because of all the files I use for work. I have gone through and deleted all the unnecessary applications by simply dragging them into the trash, but I am curious, does this ACTUALLY uninstall the application? My reason for asking is because in some cases, when dragging the app to the trash, the app simply just says, "Move to trash" and other times it says, "Uninstall application." Like I said I want to clear up as much space as possible to get my laptop running a bit faster.
And yes, I am already in the process of ordering new RAM to help speed up the computer as a whole, but I would like some help in UNINSTALLING unwanted applications, and am also open to any other ideas on how to speed my computer up. I am EXTREMELY tech savvy when it comes to computers, especially Apples, I just can't seem to figure this one out.... HELP ME!
    Thank you in advance

Have a look at this video tutorial on how to uninstall applications completely on Mac OS X, something apps like AppZapper and AppDelete are not able to do yet.
And unless you have a 250 GB HDD with less than 5 to 10 GB of free storage, freeing up storage space will not make your computer run faster.
Maybe think about getting an SSD as system drive, it speeds up your Mac quite considerably.

How do I completely uninstall intego net barrier? I can't install Norton Antivirus 2012 until this is off my computer. And I can not get it off my Computer. ANyone?

Intego has their own uninstaller which is the best thing to use. Otherwise, see the following. From a practical point of view you really don't need any such software on the Mac.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.
