Can't seem to create keyboard shortcuts

I have just purchased a Mac mini and am brand new to Apple so I presume I am running 10.6.2 but if more info is required you may need to direct me a little. My old PC died and I was sold the Mac mini as a drop-in replacement that could use my new screen / keyboard.
I am unable to work out how to create a keyboard shortcut e.g., to associate the 'Home' key with 'Go to beginning of line.' I can get into System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Keyboard & Text Input OK. Clicking on the plus sign (Add an application shortcut) beneath the lists brings down the sub-panel with Application | Menu Title | Keyboard Shortcut OK.
The problem is that I can only enter keys from the numeric keypad and arrow key cluster in the Keyboard Shortcut field, but nothing from the main section of the keyboard or the Ins / Del / Home / End / PgUp / PgDn cluster. Not letters, or numbers, or any other keystrokes that I can tell. I just get the system bell.
It is a new Logitech keyboard which I set to US International layout as I work with accented character sets. Any assistance appreciated.

You wouldn't be able to define that specific shortcut anyway. Try using Control-B (Off the top of my head; this page has a full list of them) to move to the beginning of a textfield / line.

  • Can you create keyboard shortcuts to open applications?

    Hi everyone,
I have been trying to create some keyboard shortcuts to open individual applications but they haven't been working. For example, to open up iTunes, I assigned Command+i. But I'm starting to think this isn't possible in OS X. Is this true? Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?
    Thanks,
    Dustin

The Apple Help for Keyboard Shortcuts in "System Preferences" (the Question Mark "?" down at the bottom) says the following: "Note: You can create keyboard shortcuts only for existing menu commands. You cannot define keyboard shortcuts for general purpose tasks such as opening an application or switching between applications."
I use a program called "Quicksilver" from blacktree.com . It is not easy to get used to, but it is quite powerful. To open a program (once Quicksilver is installed properly), you can either set a keyboard shortcut such as "Control-i" (or whatever you want), or use their universal opener "Control-space" and type the first letter or two of the application you want to open and then hit or type open.
My favorite feature of Quicksilver so far is the ability to recover easily any number of previous copies to your clipboard. How many times have I copied something and then before pasting it copied something else by mistake and lost the first thing I copied?!? Quicksilver lets me hit "Control-space" and then open a clipboard history window and scroll down to whatever I want to paste (I have it set for 100 items, pretty excessive, I know!). Cheers!

  • Create keyboard shortcuts for different mailboxes?

How can I create keyboard shortcuts to "Get Mail" from individual email accounts? (ie NOT all accounts at once). I'm sure I did it in the Panther version of Mail – by using the Keyboards Sys Pref – but I can't seem to get it to work this time...
    Thanks!

System Preferences->Keyboard; Keyboard Shortcuts is the place to go to add shortcuts to any application.
Select Application Shortcuts and add yours there.

You can also check in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts, make sure that custom shortcuts were not created using those same commands. If ones were, they could be creating a conflict. Step throuogh each of the items in the left list, checking the array presented in the right pane for each.

  • How to create Keyboard Shortcuts to Activate Buttons without the Mouse?

Is there a way to create keyboard shortcuts in HTMLDB like CTRL+N to activate the Create New button, CTRL+S to Save the record, etc?
    Thanks.

I haven't tried this myself, but you could always add an attribute to the control called accesskey. Use this link for further information: http://www.netmechanic.com/news/vol4/accessibility_no19.htm
If the control is a button you will need to make sure that it is an html button so that you can modify the attributes.

  • How can I get the Voiceover Keyboard shortcuts to show up in a form in which I can copy

I have low vision & have been trying to learn to use Voiceover on both my iPhone & my Mac mini for months. Very frustrating.
    1. How can I get the Voiceover keyboard shortcut commans to show up in a form in which I can copy & paste them into a pages document so I can print it out & use for quick reference?? The one that shows up when I press VO +HH won't let me copy & paste it, & it won't show up in the Help section no matter what subject I enter. The help topics shown do not correlate with the topics I'm entering. why is that??
    2. Please make the cursor able to be wider, like in the software program Zoomtext, that I used when I had a PC. The razor-thin cursor (in this text box!) in Pages is impossible for me to see.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

You should be able to copy them from there.

Using iCal on my ipad2 and can't seem to create a repeating event, specifically, an appointment that occurs the second Wednesday of every month.  Any help is greatly appreciated....thanks!
    iPad 2, iOS 5.0.1

Although this isn't currently possible in the iOS Calendar app, go to iCloud.com (not on your iPad, but on a computer browser like Safari or Firefox) and log in.  There, you can add an event in Calendar and have the options to make it repeat however you want.

  • Hi  I can't seem to create folders to save emails in.  I have added a new mailbox, but it doesn't show up on the left of the screen.  What am I doing wrong??  Thanks

HI.  I can't seem to create folders to save emails in.  I have added (several!) new mail boxes, but they do not appear in the menu on the left of the screen.  How can I access/view them?  Many thanks

Well, just to confirm the process, open Mail and click on the word "Mailbox" up at the top pf the screen in the menu bar.  Then click on "New Mailbox" in the list.  In the window that opens, enter the name you want for this new mailbox.  The new Mailbox will be located over in the left hand column under the heading there, "On My Mac".  If you cannot see the mailbox there, then it is "hidden" under "On My Mac". You will need to hover your mouse cursor over the phrase "On My Mac" and just to the right the word "Show" will faintly appear.  Click on "Show" and your Mailboxes under "On My Mac" will appear.

  • Can i create Keyboard Shortcuts?

    Hi guys,
Does Acrobat has keyboard shortcuts that i could configure or change? When i get a nice designed pdf i like to know each font characteristics and is too slow to go one by one by click, select, right mouse button....Properties everytime. If i could call properties SHIFT+D, for example, life would be easier.
    Cheers,
    S

This can't be set from within Acrobat.

  • Can I delete a Finder keyboard shortcut?

I often use the keyboard shortcut Option-Command-1 in Safari to get to the Top Sites page.
Problem is, if I accidentally bring the Finder to the front and use that same shortcut, all my Desktop stuff is unintentionally rearranged, because this is the Finder shortcut for View->Clean up by->Name
I'd like to delete (or change) the Finder shortcut but can't seem to do it in System Prefs.
Can someone please explain how (if it's possible)?
    I'm using OS 10.8.5

You could remap the Finder -> View -> Clean Up By -> Name (or Arrange by Name) to a different keyboard shortcut.
    System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Application Shortcuts -> [+]
Select "Finder" as the Applications in the popup pick list
    Menu Title: "Name"
Keyboard Shortcut: Press the key combination you want as the new shortcut.
    See if that helps.
If that doesn't work, then consider getting a HotKey utility.  If you have a trackpad, I would suggest BetterTouchTool, as it will also allow you to create lots of Trackpad gestures of your own.  Then map Command-Option-1 to whatever you like when in the Finder.

  • Creating keyboard shortcuts in Acrobat 9.0 Pro

Is it possible to create own keyboard shortcuts in Acrobat 9.0 Pro?
I have searched for this option, but without success.
The problem is that almost all Adobe programs use "ctrl+ plus sign" to zoom in and "ctrl+ minus sign" to zoom out, just like the Acrobat used to do as well.
Not anymore. Now Zoom in "Ctrl+equal sign" and Zoom out "Ctrl+hyphen". I could use these new ones if they only would work. With these new shortcuts I can zoom in, but the zoom out does not work (I donät use EN keyboard layout).
I want the old shortcuts back. I would really like to see that the Acrobat zooms in and out just like "all" the other Adobe programs do.
Is there a way to create my own keyboard shortcut?

I would like to create my own shortcuts also (especially for extract pages).  Someone please advise us on whether this is possible!

    What's that ?
    and that :
It doesn't have one from the beginning.
    It's really not a problem.
I don't like to change existing shortcuts but adding new ones is really not a problem.
Read carefully the System's Help page dedicated to this subject .

  • How can I get my InDesign keyboard shortcuts to work?

Can anyone please tell me how to reset my InDesign defaults. They were working fine a while ago, but now my keyboard shortcuts don't respond. Eg Ctrl X, Ctrl V, Enter and my arrow keys.
I have reset the preferences with Alt+Ctrl+Shift, and also renamed both defaults files, but still keyboard shortcuts don't work for me.

Your user account is not named Administrator, though, is it? You probably don't have the built-in Administrator account turned on (it's off by default). See Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums and Elevated Command Prompt - Windows 7 Help Forums for directions on how to turn this account on and off.
Before you do that, though, you can try some other things. Go to your current user account, as directed in the previous post, and rename the two Adobe folders, reboot and restart ID. New folders should be created, and hopefully the permissions will be correct. If the shortcuts still are not there.
If that doesn't work, delete or rename the new Adobe folders created in the previous attempt, go to Users in Control Panel and create a new user account with and make it an administrator, then log on with that account and start InDesign. If the shortcuts work, copy the Adobe folders to your original user account.
Still not working? Make sure you are logged in on your regular account. On each of the two Adobe folders in your user profile right-click and choose Properties, then the Security tab. Verify that your user and System both have full control.
Still not working? Time to activate the Administrator Account.
Set a Restore Point before you do any of this stuff, just in case....
