Can't seem to delete MPlayerX.dmg from my MacBook

Hello!
Recently I was directed to a streaming website that automatically downloaded a file called MPlayerX.dmg, which seems to be some sort of adware judging by other peoples' experiences with it. I did not actually install the file, but when I went to delete it from my Downloads folder, I found myself unable to empty the trash. Instead, this message pops up:
I don't really understand how it's in use if I never installed it, and it's definitely not in my Applications folder. Any help would be much appreciated! It doesn't seem to be doing anything to my Mac but it is rather annoying just sitting there. I'm using a 2011 MacBook Pro, running Mavericks.

The disk image contains malware, so it's a good thing you didn't install it. Locate it in the sidebar of a Finder window under DEVICES and click the eject button. You should then be able to delete the file. Never follow a prompt on any website to install or update software.

As long as you don't delete the trash, the files should be recoverable.
I suspect using the Put Back command could take a long time, so be patient.
If your Time Machine backups are mixed with your daughter's backups you might want to buy a larger drive and move the Time Machine files to the new drive.
Regarding missing photos in iPhoto...There might be options to rebuild/recover that data from iPhoto rather than trying to revert to a Time Machine backup.
Check out this third party app, iPhoto Library Manager. It has a demo.

    Options for a larger drive.
I like the Seagate USB 3.0 Backup plus drives. Works on USB 2.0 ports. They come formatted for PC but easy to format in Disk Utility.
I don't recommend Western Digital because of the boot problem with some of their drives.
    LaCie makes good drives.
All Mac formatted drives will cost more and it’s easy to reformat with Disk Utility. Do not use the software that comes with the drives. It’s recommended that you use Apple’s Disk Utility.
Prices vary but this gives you an idea of what you’ll find. As you notice the second and third TB is usually only $15 more per TB. Normally, you’ll find these prices but right now the 1T is more than the 2T
Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB USB 3.0 $85
Seagate Backup Plus 2 TB USB 3.0 $99
Seagate Backup Plus 3 TB USB 3.0 $115
I have seen the 3T on sale for $99.
Locally, Best Buy seems to have the best prices.

  • Phony USPS exe file. Now can't seem to delete downloads.

I opened a phony email from USPS saying something was not deliverable and asking me to "Print Label." This downloaded an execute file 11 pages of computer programming text. Now I can't seem to delete downloads. How do I delete a download? Or, do I have a bigger problem? Jack.

There shouldn't be any harmful consequences because .exe files aren't even compatible with Macs (they're for Windows), they will always show up as script in TextEdit. So in the future don't even bother downloading .exe files, just stop the downloads if you see they are .exe because it's a waste of time and hard drive space.
    Hope this helps,

  • I want to know how to delete game apps from my macbook pro also can i trust any macbook cleaners or keepers?

I want to know how to delete game apps from my macbook pro also can i trust any macbook cleaners or keepers? My mac seems to be running a bit off.

To delete any type of app you need to open the Finder window and highlight the app you want to delete by moving it to the trash. Empty the trash and it's gone. There are some Apple provided apps that cannot be deleted but you should not have any issue with the games.
As for cleaners, I personally don't use them but the 911 and Mackeeper are very popular and I hear work pretty well with Macs.

  • Can't seem to delete previous user's account.

Hey everyone, I bought a second hand MacBook Pro 5.5. Beautiful thing. I managed to make myself the admin and am now currently logged in as so. But I can't seem to delete the previous user's standard account. When I try to do so in preferences (accounts) and click "OK" it just freezes over. What to do?
    Thanks in advance!

You need to use the Original system Reinstall Discs that the previuos owner sent with the system to wipe the drive and reinstalll OS X and iLife apps. Until you do that that Mac will always be tied to the origiinal owners name in some way. Once the OS is installed and started for the first time and someone input there name and other details it will always be there someplace.
The only way to completely remove it is to erase or repartition the drive and do a clean fresh install of OS X.
Then when you start it for the first time and input your info, Name and whatever, it will then be tied to you.
If the previous owner did not send you those discs you can order a replacement set from Apple for a small charge.
    You Need Those Discs.

Log into the app store using the Apple ID you used to set your computer up. Look under purchases. If it is not there you may need to accept it or to unhide it

I would do 1 thing at a time:"now the micropohone is not working in facetime"
Here is what you can check to get your mike working in facetime:
    1. Hold down option while you click on the speaker next to time a. date,
under input Device see if your mic is marked. If not: ✔️
    2. Click the apple top left/System Prefs./click on the Sound speaker:
    under Input highlight microphone.
    3. When you have factime on go to video above scroll and see if your mic is marked ✔️
If that does not get it to work there is more you can check:
    (Utilities/Audio, midi setup)
For any other audio device you do this for input and output.
If you get stock post back

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

How can I completely delete an app from my Macbook Pro?

For programs that do not require an Administrator's password to install on your Mac, drag its program icon to the Trash. For those that require a password, research its developer's website or other support options for specific uninstallation instructions.
Never use all-purpose "cleaners" or "zappers" or similarly named clever utilities to uninstall anything.

How can I stop auto deletion of messages from my inbox?
I've tried to fix this by changing the IMAP account's Junk settings so that they are moved either to the
    "Junk" folder on 'account name'
    or
Other: (drop down list for choosing accounts and one of its folders) Junk on 'account name'
I am sure I lost all of my important, not junk mail, amazon.com messages as well as other messages from comercial sites.
