I think those numbers are wrong ? but if correct this cause be a serious performance issue, a hard drive needs at least 10% free space left on it for normal function ... are you sure you're not reading the RAM figures ? Open a Finder window and at the bottom will be 'xxxGB Available'
SSD are very fast and quiet but they are expensive and offer lower capacity than normal internal drives. You can upgrade what you have to 500GB or if the right model/space to 650GB. If your drive is getting full I suggest you look at something like the Seagate 500GB 7200rpm kit from OWC for only $148

Can't seem to keep my MacBook Air from disconnecting ..

I've looked up a variety of solutions online, and have applied each one with no accurate results. My Airport seems to be fully connected at all times, but once every so often, my page won't load, and my usual progression is to pull the dropdown from the Airport icon, select Network Preferences>Assist Me>Diagnostics and then just click "Continue" until either one of two things happens either
A - The Airport connects and I get the message "Your internet connection appears to be working" at which point I click "quit" and resume or
B - I enter my password into my wireless router if I've gotten there too fast.
I don't think I should have to keep doing this. I understand wireless frequencies can get bogged down and kick me out from time to time, but this happens on my Air typically every 5-20 minutes, and I'm pretty sure that's not supposed to happen.
Anyone got a hard and fast solution? I should mention that I've updated my software, emptied my caches, reset Safari, tried Firefox, ensured my router is set to WPA, dragged my connection to the top of the list, and tried several other methods to alleviate this problem, but am still getting kicked. I love my MacBook Air and I want to save it! Help!

It could be the DNS settings your ISP is using is creating the problem. You can easily change your DNS settings by using the following instructions. Here is a link to a MacWorld article that talks about the subject: DNS Troubleshooting

6. Add 208.67.222.222
7. Click + sign

Can't seem to restore my nano after intializing on a PC

OK, hopefully this is an easy fix.
I intially hooked the nano up to my work PC, but would, in retrospect, like to work with it on my home Cube Mac. I have tried to "restore" it so that it will work on the Mac, but when I open the iPod sofware updater, and it says, "Plug in an iPod to update", I do so and even though it will show either on the desktop or in iTunes itself, the little blue bars that should allow me to update/restore never become active.
Has this happened to anyone else, and if so what to do? I can't imagine why I'm not getting the option to restore the nano if that window comes up and it obviously knows I've plugged my nano in.

Unfortunately, now when I plug my nano into my Cube, it is still telling me that some of the tunes don't copy onto my iPod (in fact, none of them do) because I don't have the current software, and to install the latest by going to apple.com, blah, blah, blah.
I DO indeed have the latest software and both iTunes and my Cube recognize the nano. I just can't get it to copy them onto it.
Does anyone have an idea as to what I can do to actually get MUSIC to play ut of this thing! I've had it for a week and a half, and something as simple as getting tunes to load onto it is proving to be the hardest process ever! Arggghhhh!

After installing Mavericks my Business Mail folder disappeared and Time Machine can't seem to restore it with everything in it. How can I fix this?

Time Machine doesn't restore my Business Folder in Mail, which is empty after I installed Mavericks. It will restore just the folder but nothing in it. What am I doing wrong? Also, Time Machine doesn't go back more than about a year. I thought it would do better than that.

Since installing mavericks I can't seem to restore my time machine backups

It only seems to show back ups it's done since mavericks. However I can see another computer's sparse bundle that also used the time capsule. Any tips?
Quite worried that it may have wiped over my old backups

Frequently doing a SMC reset will help this issue, for directions please click the iMac SMC and PRAM reset link. Also check the obvious such as cables and connections. Or it's even possible the EHD has failed, they can and do.

I can't seem to charge my macbook air

There appears to be something in the way preventing me from charging my mac book air. I don't know where it came from but it just seem to have appreared it's just high enough that the charger can't connect.

What I understand is that it doesn't charge, neither the green nor amber lights turn on when you connect the charger to the Mac. I also understand that there is no evidence that this is due the contacts not getting close enough.
So there may be several different causes and remedies:
Wall plug broken: try another
Charger died: try a good charger and if it works, get a new one
Some electronics in MBA died: try a good charger and if it does not work, have the MBA repaired

Wow! I think I had this same issue just last night.
I was cleaning my macbook pro retina on the outside. Then I opened it up and was wiping dust off the monitor and I can't pinpoint exactly when, but the colors changed suddenly. It looked super strange, it was like green halo's and it looked worse when looking at it at an angle. Of course I took no pictures!!! I was freaking out that my 2 grand laptop was busted and I somehow removed a protective film or something.
But I digress... The image looked very green and spacey, it was almost a neat effect. After about 5 minutes it started to look a little more digital though. There were straight lines of this halo effect on the edges and top. After about 10 minutes it turned into a predominate issue with the blacks on screen. I could open a web browser and it was unnoticable on a white background. After about 15 minutes, you could only barely see the green cloud effect if you looked at the monitor from an extreme angle. After about 20 minutes, it was completely back to normal, I almost feel paranoid like I see a halo or something strange. But I believe that might be all in my head now.
So yerp, lemme know what you guys figure out.

Can't see TM backup when attempting full restore on MacBook

Sadly, without any warning, the HD on my MacBook died yesterday.
Happily, I've been making regular Time Machine backups of this machine - onto an internal drive in my Mac Pro via Firewire (whenever I wanted to update my TM backup I would plug the MacBook into the Mac Pro via Firewire and somehow the MacBook would find that drive and do it's thing)
So today I bought a replacement HD for the laptop, installed and formatted it via Disk Utility (after starting up the MacBook from the 10.6 disc). Then I connected the 2 machines via Firewire, as I've done previously to back up the MacBook.
But when I try to restore from Time Machine backup (the bottom choice from the installer disc drop down menu) no backups appear to be available. The window in which backups would, I assume, appear so they can be selected remains empty.
As an alternative, I copied the sparse bundle in it's entirety to an external USB drive (perhaps not the thing to do now I've been reading this forum) and plugged that into the MacBook. Still unable to select a backup to restore from.
I suspect I'm doing something horribly wrong. Should I potentially be able to restore my MacBook from this backup? How?

Complete enough to be recognized as containing OSX.
Now however there seems to be another problem - I can't get the restore process to complete. The restoring window starts up fine and restores files up to around 10%. Everything appears to be going smoothly until I receive the message "The Mac OSX installation couldn't be completed".
Is it getting 10% done, or is there 10% remaining?
I've tried this 4 times now with similar results, though each time the crash log indicates that different files have crashed the restore.
What files? Are they in your system folders or user folders?
It's possible that whatever went wrong with your HD corrupted some files, and those changes were backed-up, so the restore is bringing them back.
Unless you already tried it, you can try the restore again, but select an earlier backup, from before the problems started.
An alternative is, start up again from the Snow Leopard Install disk, but select +Disk Utility+ from the Utilities menu, and use it to erase your internal HD. Then quit Disk Utility and install OSX from the disc.
When your Mac restarts, use +Setup Assistant+ after the welcome video to transfer all your stuff from the backups. See #19 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for details.
When it restarts, before using any apps, download and install the 10.6.5 "combo" update. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

Thank you Terence for your help. I was able to restore my backup from my time machine ext drive to a new 1tb seagate ext drive. so i felt sort of ok. but yesterday that older ext drive i used for time machine wouldn't open! i called applecare and they trouble shooted with me and said it's probably a goner and data is probably corrupted. it's only a few years old and i'm very careful with it. my husband accidentally dropped my new drive last night -- i know, unbelievable, i was SO upset, poor guy -- but I'm so stressed with all of this. i have 10 years of photos and videos. so now i only have the one newer drive with a backup. i have to buy another one today to backup again so i at least have two backups. i tried to delete a ton of files last night to free up the 30 gb of space i need to get my full library back on my mac. i have 90gb free and deleted 7 years worth of photos i had on picasa that were in my "pictures" folder and also a ton or random photos and videos i had in that same pictures folder and thought that would give me the 30 gb but it hardly freed up any space at all! do you know why that is? all of this stuff is really a pain and really stressful. thank god i did have a backup in the first place but now i am panicked the one i have left will somehow crash. especially after my husband dropped the drive lastnight! it didn't fall far and fell onto a wood floor and seems fine, but after my older ext drive crashed yesterday -- and i lost my entire iphoto library a fewweeks ago off my mac -- i feel cursed. any answers you have would be great. thank you.

I restored my Macbook Pro and now I can't log in as Admin - it says there is an error with FileVault and I don't have access - plz help! thank you.

I had to restore my Macbook Pro from Time Capsule yesterday and now when I go to log in as my usual Admin, it says there is a FileVault error and my access is denied. I created another temporary Admin acct, but everything I had on my desktop, etc is "gone" I can look up the "drive' or wahtever it's called, but I can't access any of it. In the Directory Utility window, click the lock icon and authenticate. Select the Directory Editor tool in the toolbar. Select Users from the Viewing menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Select the affected user account in the list. On the right is a list of properties and values. Select the property "HomeDirectory" and delete it by clicking the minus-sign icon directly below the property list. There are two such icons in the window. You want the one on the right, not the one on the left.
CAUTION: Do not click the minus-sign icon on the left, below the user list.
Then click the Save button in the lower right corner of the window. Quit Directory Utility.
CAUTION: There is no "undo" in Directory Utility. If you make a mistake and delete something in the Directory Editor that should not have been deleted, restore your whole system from a backup and start over. I have no other help to offer in that case.
Try again to log in as the affected user. If you can log in, you should find a file in the home folder with the name of the user and the filename extension "sparseimage" or "sparsebundle". Double-click that file. A disk image should open. Copy your files from that disk image to restore them.
I strongly suggest that you deactivate legacy FileVault in the Security & Privacy preference pane, then log out and log back in. Consider activating FileVault 2 if you want that kind of security.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

HT3500 I have a MacBook Pro and an HP ENVY 110 SERIES All-In-One . I can't seem to get a network set up or either one to locate or connect to the other one.

I've spent hours, actually probably days, trying to do this but it's not working. I've had the ENVY since Nov
and have not been able to print - much less do anything else with it.
My internet is CLEAR wireless. I use the little USB 4G Mobil Modem. This new HP ENVY is also wireless.
I know I can't be online and print at the same time unless I get a router.
I also know that I can go offline and change the network pref to "airport" so I can print. Meaning I'll have to change
back and forth but for my uses, that's ok..at least for right now.
What I can't seem to get set-up correctly is my own local network.
I'm pretty sure it's suppose to be done using "Airport".
Obviously, I'm doing something wrong in establishing my network.
The printer is listed on my printer preferences and shown as "offline" "default". I assume that means the ENVY
is my default printer. Great! At least my Pro knows it's suppose to connect to the ENVY once everything's set-up correctly.
Now, if someone could just tell me exactly, step-by-step what to do to get that done....

Well... no help was found here.. so I abandoned the wireless- ness of my printer. I bought a
small 10 port hub because only 2 USB ports really isn't enough with wireless mouse, wireless internet
and any kind of printer. I also bought a long USB cable. I now print--wired since this can be done
as an alternative to wireless with this printer. Because I don't want a cable "hanging around"
when the printer is not in use, I simple disconnect it and reconnect when I want to print.
It's a temporary solution others may find helpful as well. Apparently there's been a lot of
confusion and problems getting this printer set up wirelessly with our MacBooks.
Shame on HP for not helping us out!

That comes with iOS 5 (Settings>General>About>Version) and only the 3G abd later iPods can go to iOS 5 or later
