Can't seem to restrict access to screen sharing

I'm running a macbook pro (10.6.2). I'm at my folks' place for the holidays and I tried screen sharing into my MBP from my dad's iMac (10.6.2) and noticed that I could access the MBP screen without any password prompt.
I went into my MBP sharing system preferences and set screen sharing to: "Allow access for only these users: <my login>"
Again, I tried accessing my MBP screen from the iMac, and again I was able to get in without any password prompt.
Now I'm using my dad's login on his iMac, which is completely different from my MBP login which I thought I had limited screen sharing to. All of this is taking place within a home network.
I would like to allow screen sharing on my MBP, but only if it's password protected. Can anyone see what I'm doing wrong here? Why does my MBP keep allowing open access to screen sharing when it appears that I am restricting it to only my profile?
I tried messing with the options in "computer settings", but that didn't seem to help either.

I would suspect that the first time you did it (may have been a while back) the password was saved in your father's keychain on the imac.
open keychain access on the imac and see if it's there. if you delete the keychain entry for that password it should ask again next time you try to connect. and don't check the box to remember the password in the keychain.

  • SSH login- how do I restrict access to a shared folder?

I have created Shares in WGM for SMB and AFP access on my OS X 10.4.8 Server. However when I connect via SSH it's not restricting access to the folder based on the User Name I login with- I see the entire volume! How do I restrict access to a specific folder based on a user name setup in WGM? ACL's?

    Hey George,
It sounds like you are trying to limit ssh/sftp users to a specific area, aka jails. The FTP server lets you 'chroot' users to a certain area making it appear as the root thus preventing them from navigating up the hierarchy, which is what I think you, and me and many others are trying to accomplish.
The ssh compiled into OS X is missing this very needed feature. There have been a few documented workarounds, but they've either been too insecure or too clunky for me.
I've dealt with the fact that my users can get to the root of the hard drive, and have just been very careful about my privileges (by using ACLs), thus preventing them from getting inside areas they shouldn't.
There's a good write up here: http://www.schwie.com/brad/macosxsftpchroot/ and if you include the term 'chroot' in your searches, you should find a bit about it here too.
And Roger, I think George meant the file sharing protocol used by ssh. man sftp.

  • Remote access without screen sharing?

I have an iMac and a MacBook Air. I'd like to remotely access the iMac from the Air on my local network, so I can take advantage of the iMac's superior processing power and file storage, while sitting in a different room. The problem is that my iMac has a 27" monitor and a 24" secondary display, so screen sharing doesn't work very well on my Air's tiny 13" monitor.
My question is, is there any software that would allow me to remotely login to the iMac and give me a Mac OS interface, but size that interface appropriately for the MacBook Air, rather than just showing me the actual desktop of the iMac. Basically, I want it to pretend like the notebook's monitor is the monitor connected to the remote mac and still execute all the code on the remote mac. Extra points if I can essentially instantiate a second instance of the same account on the iMac, so I can be logged in locally and remotely at the same time, with the same account, but with different looking desktops.

I presume that your issue is your viewing two very small side-by-side screens on an already small screen. There is a drop down menu on the screen sharing window itself (that is, the window of the screen sharing app running on the MBAir, on the left side in the vicinity of the toolbar) where you can select to display either the left screen, the right screen, or both screens. I have a (employer-owned) 17" MBP that accesses a (employer-owned) dual-screen iMac and find that switching between left and right screens is not too bad of a compromise, in exchange for being able to actually see (and do) anything on the iMac from the MBP's screen sharing app.

  • Airport Extreme is allowing access to screen sharing, file sharing from external IP addresses (some from China, Canada etc)

How to get control over the ports/port forwarding etc in Airport Extreme?
How to make AE drop packets to certain ports from external ports.  Or create whitelist/blacklists?
I figured out where the MAC filtering is!  (It is inside the Timed Access Control).  I wish it had a list of connected device and allowed me to select, name and add them.
I am getting requests from Chinese IP to the screen sharing ports forwarded to my iMac.  Had requests to other ports as well.  There was one IP address from CANADA too.
I want to open file sharing for local use only.

Why is Airport Extreme forwarding requests for screen sharing from external ip addresses to my imac?  I don't have a public address, nor use dynamic dns service, and I have removed the server app (at least I think I have, but Apple Store doesn't think so).

  • Internet connection say Restricted access"

I have been connecting to the internet via my Airport Base Station for weeks. Now I can connect, but get restricted access message from my ISP. I contacted them, there answer was "we don't support wireless". How was I able to access for weeks thru my Airport if this statement is true? I would really like to use my Airport as phones lines are a problem with my wheelchair. Any help would be appreciated!

I am able to successfully connect to Juno (dial-up) but when I try to open Firefox I get the "restricted access" message from Juno. My Airport Base Station is the only device I am using. At one point I was unable to connect with my internal modem, I thought it had quit so I was connecting with Airport no problem. Now I get the restricted access message, I did not change anything that's why it's a mystery to me. I am not sure what you mean about turning my modem off to get it to redirect to a different device.
You're one of the (presumably) rare people on this discussion board who still uses dial-up. Evidently you're using one of the AirPort units that included a dial-up modem. My comment about your modem presumed that you had broadband service and a broadband modem.
Do you see that "restricted access" message in any other browser than Firefox? Do you see it with every Web page that you try to view with Firefox? Have you tried contacting the Juno people about this?
I"m not sure how relevant this is to your situation, but on this Web page http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-67980.html I found these comments about Juno and the "restricted access" message:
"It would seem that Juno wants you to use their program to connect, and if you try to make a direct connection without their program, you cannot go to any webpages."
"[Juno] made it clear in an email response to me that you can only log on to the Juno servers using their proprietary software."
I'm not sure what options that leaves you.

  • Screen sharing access

Hi , I have found problems if I try to access my G5 (Screen Sharing) from my Macbook Pro . If I do not use or employ the Finder Sharing Icon , or the Finder's Network , I find the computer name , or iP4v address do not permit , allow , access in Screen Sharing . It might be safer to say the application doesn't recognise these as the correct question or the correct answer . I have read that the G5 optical card's physical limits are among the reasons I cannot venture to the Macbook's screen to verify a two way communication . Or to discover which address is the one that I am failing to select correctly with the aid of manipulating both computers . Any guesses advice scolds or anecdotal voyages ?

Hi tll123 , I have used that information , and I just tried it again . This is a paste of the data by the green dot with shy little ex's where there once was my addresses .

  • Can you use screen sharing outside of your local network?

I've been poking around with the "screen sharing" in osx Lion. I have a few questions about it.
Firstly, is the built-in screen sharing only accessible through the finder?
Also, is it only available on local networks? I've gotten it to work on two computers on the same network. But, can I use in the built-in screen sharing to look at my work iMac while I'm at home on my Macbook? Or would I need a full VPN client to do this? (Although isn't there built-in VPN compatibility in Lion?)
    Thanks!

  • How to detect real desktop and remotely accessed(screen shared) desktop?

    Hi All,
On Mac Os the Screen Sharing feature is similar to Remote Desktop Service. Is there a way to determine whether the terminal where we are starting the application(our own application) is real desktop or remotely accessed (screen shared) desktop?
    For Ex:
I have booted(logged in) the Mac A sytem with user1 account. From another Mac B machine, i will login to user2 account of Mac A sytem using Screen sharing  feature. My application has to run only on real desktop, not on remotely accessed desktop(screen shared). So Is there a way(programmatically) to determine whether the terminal where I am starting the application is real desktop or remotely accessed (screen shared) desktop?
    Please guide me.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Vinay

Have a look at the 'Son Of Grab' sample code, it shows you how to grab elements of the screen individually.

  • Screen Sharing and Sleeping Mac Mini

    Hi,
After months of nagging from my IT colleagues I have just bought a Mac mini, just upgraded to Leopard and am just getting to grips with how it functions. (very impressed to date now I have a "proper operting system" :o) )I am using it in my lounge connected to my Plasma TV. I have enabled Screeen sharing and can access it succesfully from my windows machines using VNC viewer free edition. The colour and picture quality is excellent however it won't allow me to connect when the machine is asleep. I also have Vine VNC server which I am sure would go to sleep and let me connect using VNC however it doens't seem to sleep with Vine anymore and I also get two icons appear in the dock. The screen quality appear to be much better with Screen sharing so I'd rather use that than Vine. I could switch sleeping off howevere I don't use the Mac and would like to let it sleep. I was a bit nervous about posting here for the first time incase I get "abuse" but my other Mac users assure somebody will know the answer. I have some other questions so I'll post these on the site in the relevent areas now I'm registered.
    Cheers in advance.
    Clarkerz

Clarkerz...Wondering the same thing. No "abuse" from my direction. This is a great question I am also trying to find a solution for.
I often work remotely between my home office work horse (g4 tower) and my 17" MacBook Pro. Files are often duplicated between the systems...and having one access point (screen sharing) is great. However, I am wondering the same thing. I hate to leave the slave computer (in most cases this is my G4 tower) on permanently in the event I happen to need to share in.
Before Leopard, I was using Astro View / Share. I am sure some will wonder...why that program. Well, long story short, pain in the arse, but it worked...althoughbeit not as well as Leopards built in screen share. Though Screen Share is a much better solution...I still wonder about the "sleep" issue. Hate to leave it on permanently.

  • Leopard Screen Sharing (VNC) Quality?

Before Leopard I used to use Vine VNC Server for accessing my Mac over the internet. Now that Leopard has its own VNC (Screen Sharing) server built in theres no need to use it.
Normally when I VNC'ed to my Mac over the internet using UltraVNC on Windows it would automatically select the best image compression/quality (eg only displaying 256 colors only etc) to make it much quicker over the internet.
But the new Leopard VNC server only seems to allow full quality screen sharing, which is painfully slow over the internet (esp as my macs running at 1600x1500!), selecting anything other than Auto in UltraVNC will instantly disconnect after entering my VNC password.
Does Leopard's VNC (Screen Sharing) support compression/image quality like Vine VNC? If so how do you enable it?
    Thanks for any help!

Thats what I thought as well, the "Allow control" option in ARD admin prefs is off. When ARD admin is not launched VNC to the computer works fine. If ARD admin is opened I can no longer VNC to it. Its like the "Allow control" pref doesn't actually do anything & instead is forced on always

  • Screen Sharing on "headless" Mac Mini

Does anyone know how to change the screen size and keymap for a "headless" Mac Mini (no keyboard and monitor), accessed via Screen Sharing?
    Currently:
    - The screen size is limited to 800x600 or 1024x768. I'd like bigger.
    - On the Mac Mini, I have to use the "U.S. Extended" keyboard layout to get the right key mapping from Screen Sharing. But the Login Screen doesn't seem to use this mapping. Also, I live in Switzerland, and I'd like to use international keyboard layouts.
    Info:
    - Mac Mini: OS X 10.4.11
    - Screen Sharing host (iMac): OS X 10.6.8
    - Desired keyboard layout: Swiss French and Swiss German
    Thanks!

Thanks for the ideas. As suggested, I tried swapping out both the VNC client as well as server, but unfortunately no luck.
I should have mentioned that if I plug a large monitor into the Mac Mini, I see the bigger screen via Screen Sharing. If I unplug the monitor, the larger size is maintained until I log out; then I'm back to 1024x768. This indicates that its not the VNC (client and/or server) that's limiting the screen size, it's the OS that only provides two choices if no monitor is connected. I don't see why that has to be; it's just the size of the allocated graphics buffer that changes.
Concerning the keyboard, I found that you can set the Login screen to use the US Extended keyboard layout by selecting System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Options -> Show input menu in login window. That allows you to select the keyboard layout you want to use for the Login prompt, and fortunately that selection is then saved. That significantly defuses the keyboard problem – although ideally, I'd still like to use international keyboard layouts. Logically, this should be something the VNC software controls, but I did not see any options to that effect, in any of the VNC clients and servers suggested above.

  • Screen sharing and login

I've got a mini running Leopard and a MBP running Snow Leopard. I'm trying to use screen sharing in finder to connect to the mini from the MBP. There seems to be something preventing screen sharing whenever a user is logged in to the mini, even if the login occurs in screen sharing.
Here are some examples of the behavior:
If I'm logged in as "macuser1" on the mini, I can connect to the mini as "macuser1" or "macuser2" and see folders, etc in Finder, but, when I click the share screen button, I get a connection failed message.
If I go to the mini and logout, then go to the MBP and connect to the mini as "macuser1" I can see folders just fine. When I click share screen it connects just fine and I see the login screen on the mini. If I enter a username and password it logs in just fine (I can see it logged in on the mini), but screen sharing from the MBP says "reconnecting" and can't connect anymore.
Something about being logged in on the mini prevents me from sharing its screen.
I tried creating a new user account without success. I could log into the new account, but as I was logging it, I got the "reconnecting" screen on the MBP (but could see that the login worked on the mini).
I've got all the right users in the screen sharing part of sharing settings.
    Any ideas?

have you tried the obvious - restarting the computers involved and the router?

  • VPN Screen Sharing?

I have 10.7 Server set up on a 2011 iMac at my wife's new retail business. Her and her partner both have MacBooks they will be using to connect so they can work remotely. I have a MacBook Pro that I would like to use to connect to the server to do administration type stuff. Is there any way I can connect to the VPN and initiate screen sharing on my own?
I am able to connect to the VPN, and connect to the share folders.  I am also running LightSpeed server on this server, and I am able to connect my LS client to the server no problems at all. But that's about it.
I am looking for an alternative to using iChat, where someone has to be there to click "Accept" so I can remotely administer the server. Is there a way for me to do that? I've looked into Apple Remote Desktop. but that seems to contain a lot of extra tools that I don't really need.

    Hi
On the Server select System Preferences > Sharing. Enable Remote Management (not Screen Sharing) and tick all the optons. This is probably already enabled for the reasons explained later on. Establish the VPN Connection and once connected select Connect to Server from the Go Menu. Key in vnc://IPaddressofyourserver. At the prompt provide the Server's administrator's name and password.
You can also use the server administrations applications in the same way. All you need is the Server's IP address and the administrator's name and password. You've never been limited to running the Server's administration applications solely on the Server.
I've not had a chance to look at LIon Server yet but every version of the Server going back to 10.5 enables SSH, Remote Management and as root by default. This is not the case with the Client OS. Prior to 10.5 and IIRC every version of the Server going back to 10.2 enabled SSH and root.
    HTH?

  • Screen sharing stopped working after last update

    Hello all,
I have run software update yesterday, and there were about 10 downloads (I run this weekely, so these must have been new ones). The thing is that after installing all the updates, one of the features that I use more frequently, screen sharing, stopped working properly. I have a Mac Book Pro and an I Mac, both running on Snow Leopard, and screen sharing has always worked just fine, but not after the latest update.
I checked passwords and they are all right, and also checked sharing properties and all seems to be fine. I can share files all right, but for screen sharing now is only possible by setting the option "anyone may request permission to control screen" (under sharing>screen sharing>computer settings) to on, and ask for authorization each time I need to share screens, not good, mainly if you have the computers in different rooms.
Finally, I own an Me account, so I tried sharing screen via Back to my Mac, but it didn't work either.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks a lot,
    Luis

    Problem solved!
After working with Apple, I have an answer. It looks like the 10.10.2 update changed your firewall settings. Try this:
    System Preferences>Security and Privacy>Firewall Options
Scroll down the list till you find "screensharingd". If it's marked as block in coming connections, change it to allow incoming connections.
Be sure to reboot your computer and you should be good to go!

  • Screen sharing slow after recent update (june 2012)

I have installed the latest update that Apple posted a few days ago on multipl computers.  It seems that after the update, screen sharing still works, but instead of bringing up the shared screen in about 5 seconds as it used to, it now takes almost 30 seconds.  This has happened for me on two seperate networks so I believe it is not network related.  Something in the Lion update seems to be culpret.  My 10.6 server machines still can be shared fine.

I just upgraded all my MACs to Mavericks and have now found this issue.  It isn't unusable but is real close.  I use screenshare every day and all day so this is a real pain.
Is anyone else seeing this?  Is it worth my while to try VNC?  Is it reasonable to think it may perform better?
    Thanks!
