Can't select , edit or delete extra home directories in WGM - User - Home

I am trying to get network user accounts set up on a 10.5.8 server. I have set up the server as an OD master, and created the accounts in LDAPv3/127.0.0.1. However, users can not connect from bound client computers. Logging in from >console, gives an error: "no home direcory "Network/Servers/server.com/disk1/home1/username" Double checking WFGM, shows that the home directory exists, but also under WGM -> Home, there several home paths in addition to the correct one, that I can not delete. Two are groups, neither of which the user belongs to.
afp://servername.com/group1
afp://servername.com/group2
afp://servername.com/username
afp://servername.com/Volumes/disk1/home1/username
The last directory is the correct one, and it is the only one where the "minus" and "pensile" icons (delete and edit) are not grayed out.
The actual home directory was created on /Volumes/disk1/home1/username, so I'm not sure if this is part of the problem or not... Any ideas?

OS X Server will not work properly unless DNS is properly configured. Have you done that?

    Hi sdfulbright,
Open iTunes, and under View, select "Show Sidebar". The old sidebar you are used to will show up, and everything will work the way it did under the old iTunes.
    Hope this helps!

  • Why can't I edit or delete Address Book "On My Mac" or sync with iCloud?

Why can't I edit or delete Address Book cards on my Macs, now that I've migrated to iCloud?  I can edit/delete if I go to iCloud, but the changes don't sync with my Macs.  What's happening, and what's a solution?  Just wait for Apple to fix a bug?

On your mac, if your look at the left panel of the Address Book, you'll find general categories of "iCloud" and possibly "On my mac" - if you have contacts in the latter, then they are only local to your mac, they are not shared with iCloud.  If you don't have an "iCloud" category, then your mac(s) is not set up of iCloud.  Go to system preferences and look in iCloud.  Is the mac signed into iCloud, are contacts turned on for syncing?

  • Problem mounting NFS home directories of NIS users.

Only on one of client (rest on all clients working fine), the Local directories under /home is getting mounted instead of NFS shared home directories of NIS users. Able to manually mount the NFS shared directories but they also get automatically unmount after some ideal time. NFS Shared home directory: /export/home/user1 (which should get mount as /home/user1 when user1 gets login)

  • Can't Select/Edit File Name Text - they go blank

Sometimes when I try to select a file name to edit it, the name disappears when I first click it. This often happens in list view. If I switch to icon view, most of the times, but not always, I can then select the file name text. Sometimes if I switch back to list view, then I can select the file name text as expected, but again not always.
It is intermittent so I can't give any consistent info on how or when it happens.
    Thanks,
    Steven

Try this. Select the file and hit the enter key. Does that highlight the name without deleting it? If so, adjust your mouse click settings and see if that fixes the problem. If not, create a new admin account, log into, and see if the problem's gone. Report back.

  • Imovie 08 glitches - can't select/edit/or modify clips with

I have used imovie 08 for multiple projects with no problems. My HD has plenty of space, and imovie is the only application open.
I can download video and audio from a camera in the events pane. Here are the problems:
    1. Can skim the event video, but can't see where I am at or control the vertical line that runs left to right.
    2. I can't select a specific piece of video out of the events pane to put in the project pane unless it is pre-cut/already there.
    3. Once the video clip goes from event into project pane, I cannot trim it in any way.
    4. I can get it to pull up cropping and audio.
Basically, I can't tell where I am at in the events pane while skimming, and I also cannot select peices of clips in the events pane. I also can't trim video in the project pane once some video goes in there.
Any help would be appreciated. It has worked great for three months of several projects, and now it is really acting up.
    KP

Have the exact same problem, up till now everything worked fine. Not sure when it started, various OS - iApps - QT updates recently, but here it is. I dragged a 90 minute .mov file to the clips pane, 55 minutes of importing (including the 5 minute beach ball at the end) and although the drop down finder bar menus work I can't select anything in the window including the clip itself, timeline/clip viewer switch, or the red-yellow-green buttons at the top left corner. Although "select all" is available in the edit drop down menu nothing selects. Tried tossing the com.apple.imovie.plist with no change. Opened a new movie with nothing imported same thing.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • I've created a movie but at the end there is an invisible audio clip that keeps playing. How can I select it and delete it?

    Hello everyone,
This is Karie Garnier in British Columbia, Canada.
    I'm new to FCPX.
I've created a 20 minute movie, but at the end of the movie, there is an invisible audio clip that keeps playing.
How can a video clip be playing and making sounds, when it doesn't appear in the timeline? and ...
How can I select this invisible audio clip and delete it?

I think you could be right, that it's an old render file that's got stuck.
By the time I finished this movie my 500 GB hard drive was 99.9% full and
FCP started acting wierd, so I suspect you are right.
I have since upgraded my hard drive to one 1000 GBs but when I play the movie the
    glitch remains.
    Can you please tell me:
       a) How can I fix the old render file so that it is no longer stuck?  ... and
       b) How do I take a screen shot of the timeline?

  • Getting rid of phantom home directories in WGM

My users have home directories listed in Workgroup Manager that they are no longer using, but the buttons to edit and remove these entries are grayed out. Even when I try to make a new user with no preset, these entries show up in the list and cannot be modified. I have configured a new share to automount for home directories, and unshared and deleted the old folders, but WGM still insists on listing their paths. Restarting AFP and the server doesn't help.
How do I convince WGM these folders don't exist?
    Thanks!
    Mitch

These are automounts you had set up for your user homes, you need to delete the records for them.
Using the "All Records" (bullseye) tab (enable it in WGM Preferences) delete the outdated entries under 'Mounts".

  • Network Home Directories for all users

    Hi,
I hope someone can shed some light on a possible issue.
I work for a primary school in the UK.
I have Tiger server 10.4.10 running as an Open Directory Master. I have a 1TB XRAID attached to this server where the Home Directories are hosted. I have been told that they are now slow at logging in (I am currently unwell at home so have not confirmed this yet).
It used to be a magic triangle setup but found there were problems with the managed prefs for the clients not being obtained on startup and network logins not working.
The DNS and DHCP comes from the AD still.
The OD has been set up to have the same kerberos realm as that of the AD (is this wrong) as the users are in both AD and OD with same username and password.
The users Home dirs for the OD are hosted as i say on the XRAID which has a striped array of 1TB so the HDD speed shouldn't be a problem.
The server is now connected to a 1Gb switch as are the clients.
I have added more ram to the Xserve (now running on 5GB RAM). I have read that an afp server needs a lot of ram to work effectively. Is this enough?
I have not set up link aggregation yet.
The total amount of users logging in at one time will be no more than 40 users at once as there are only 40 mac machines in the school.
I hope you can help as i would like to have something to go back to school with to tackle this if it does turn out to be true.
Any more info needed just ask.
    TIA

Hi. Let me restate so I understand it right. You are using an XServe to host network home folders and also using Active Directory for authentication? I work at a primary school also and we have an XServe that has the users home folder on it, but we also connect to an AD server for authentication. We had some speed issue with logging in but as soon as we set up a time server to ensure that both the XServe and AD server had the same time the trouble was fixed. Hope this helps.

  • Migrating local user accounts/home directories to network user accounts

    Hi,
I am planning on moving the user accounts from several Mac OS X client machines to a new Mac OS X Server machine (Quad core Xeon MacPro). I am very familiar with OS X client in a support environment, but do not have extensive experience with Server.
I read over the instructions in this article
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=ServerAdmin/10.4/en/c6um3.html
and it appears to be fairly straight forward, although I do have some questions regarding the existing data (home folders) and how to set the clients to log in to the network account.
Previously, in the event that I have needed to move a person's home directory to a new computer or recover from a corrupt OS (and Archive&install was not an option), in OS X client I would:
    1) Back up the home directory.
    2) Erase/reinstall OS X client.
    3) Log in as Root.
    4) Go into "Accounts" pref pane and create user with same short name as original/backed-up home directory.
    5) Replace the newly created home directory with the backed-up home directory.
    6) Go into Terminal and chown/chgrp the home directory to username/staff, respectively.
This would result in a perfectly migrated user account. All settings and files working just as they did on the previous system/install of OS X.
First Question: Could I employee a similar method to retain the content and settings from the local user accounts on the server as I migrate them to network users? Moving the user accounts to the server as described, then running terminal to set proper ownership...
Second Question: What do I do on each client system to tell it to recognize the networked home directory for each user? Do I just change the user's home folder path in Netinfo Manager to the automount location?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer,
    -David
MacPro 2.66 Quad Core (MA356LL/A)     Mac OS X Server 10.4.8

A network account is really existing only on the server but if you use "portable homefolders" (Tiger client and server) you could "migrate" the local account to a "server" one by:
Login locally as another user with administrative rights.
Change the name of the old account folder in /Users.
Remove the "old" account locally (woun't remove the "old" folder as you changed the name) only Netinfo data.
Login using the serveraccount login/password thus creating a homefolder on the server.
Logout and back in, enable portable homefolder.
Logout and then in as a local admin and remove the new user folder.
Change the name on the old userfolder to what the new one had.
I'm not a 100% sure Netinfo has the server account UID now (added by logging in and creating the portable account?) but if it does:
"Finding and changing UIDs across the filesystem is a one-liner command:
    sudo find / -user UID -exec chown userName {} \;
(replace UID with the old UID number and userName with the new user name to associate file ownership.)"
(A portable account must have got some "kind" of UID?)
Let the machine "sync" with the server account.
If you want an "on network only" account I don't know what you need to remove locally afterwards.

  • Migration Assistant does not see Home Directories from AD Users

We use AD as authentication domain but home directories are stored local at the client computer. Hence they are backed up via Time Machine. AD Users can use Time Machine like any local user. But now one machine crashed and we wanted to restore the full computer via Migration Assistent. Unfortunally AD Users home directories are not restored to the computer although the home directories are on the backup set. Is there a way to restore the whole Computer from the Backup Set inclusive all Users directories (including these from the AD Users, which had been stored locally)?

So, finally after fourten hours of unattended "migration," I let it continue overnight and in the morning found that the time remaining had not moved a minute.  I canceled MA and found that not one iota of data had transferred.
As far as I'm concerned, Migration Assistant ranks lower on the Apple success list than Open Doc, Newton, Pink and Taligent.
Now I have to manually install software I want to use on the MBA, apply licenses, and all the other stuff I would expect from Windows.
    NOT happy.

  • I accidentally moved 9000 pics to my desktop. How do I delete them when it won't stop loading them? I tried force quit, but there isn't one for desktop. It locks up so I can't select them to delete them. And I don't have backups! Help!!

I was trying to restore pics from the trash bin & accidentally sent them all to the desktop. Now when I turn my computer on it freezes or won't do anything other than load all these pics to the desktop. Of course I haven't done a time machine ever, so I can't restore it to an earlier time. All I want to do is delete them from my desktop. It's so bogged down I can't do anything. Please tell me there is a solution that won't wipe out my pics or cost me a fortune.

When you say freeze, how long for? The Finder may just be temporarily bogged down and unresponsive. If I had the time and I was you I'd just leave it overnight to see how things go.
If not you may have to boot in via the CLI and do things from there. This is something I can't help with though I'm sure someone will chime in with some info.

  • Problem with home directories NOT in Users and Workgroup manager

I am setting up a Leopard server (10.5.3) with the users directories in /h1. This is mounted as /Volumes/h1.
It is exported under AFP as /h1.
When I try to get Workgroup manager to create a home directory, I can enter the home directory as:
    afp://quattro.innocon.com/h1
    path is 'user'
    Full path is:
    /Network/Servers/quattro.innocon.com/Volumes/h1
However, when I try to log in as this this user, it says that the directory /Network/Servers/quattro.innocon.com/h1/username does not exist.
I cannot seem to figure out why the 'Volumes' part of the full path is being lost.
Any ideas on how to get this right?

have you checked to see if /Network/Servers/quattro.innocon.com exists?
I'm having ALOT of issues with automount not picking up on the mount-maps set by Open Directory.. If anyone has any solutions on this it would be great.

  • Can't change home directory for standard users (admin is OK)

I'm can't relocate home directories for standard users.  Relocating works fine for admin users.
When a standard user logs in, they get a message (paraphased) saying "the home directory is not available.  If it is located on a server, the server might not be online".  If I change the standard user to admin, this message goes away, and everything is fine.
    I created a standard user
moved the home directory using the terminal as root: mv UserName  /otherlocation/UserName
I then went into users and groups, other options and changed the home directory location.
Rebooted, then tried to log in as the standard users.
Next try - Deleted the standard user and created the same user with admin rights.  Followed the above steps and everything works fine.
I don't want this user to have admin rights on my system.  Any ideas

    Hi,
the AFP is has always been switched on. As for the path I believe this to be correct. The path I am using is:
    afp://musicserver/Users
I'm not at the server right now so I mat have got the afp and : and / in the wrong order here but they are correct on the server.
This however does not seem to put the a folder in the Users folder. Could it be something to do with my external hard drive? I am using a Mac Mini as our server (not ideal but fine for us, or at least was) this is booted from our external hard drive. This is the main system drive which is where the Users data is also stored. I have tried all possible paths I can thing of from replacing the 'musicserver' with the IP address. I have also tried adding the name of the drive to the path (System) but all does not work.
Are you able to suggest anything I have missed? Perhaps I'm doing the path wrong?
    Thanks again

  • Deleting pre-defined apple folders in a Users home dir

    Hello,
i would like to know if its possible to delete the following folders in my Users-home dir:
    * Downloads
    * Music
    * Movies
    * Pictures
As far as i see 10.5 throws an error if you try to delete them via finder. Havent tried to delete them via terminal as i would like to know if it would cause problems.
Basically i guess those folders are "secured" as Apple applications like Safari, itunes, iMovie etc use them.
Well i dont use those applications at all and it would be great to free my home-folder a bit just to have a better overview.
    any help is appreciated
    fidel

    Hello fidel,
You can remove those directories but I would do so cautiously. Some applications may expect to "see" them in your home folder. Each directory has an ACE (access control entry) which will prevent you from deleting the folder in the Finder. To delete them you must do so as the root user in the Terminal app by preferencing the rm command with sudo.
