Can't select layers with transparency

Hello all!
Some things just happend and I have no idea why.
1. I can no longer nudge grouped layers. Photoshop complains that it cannot nudge layers in a group. I'm pretty sure I have done this many times before, so I guess I'm doing something wrong here.
2. When I try to move a layer selected in the layer panel (or selected via ctrl-alt-right click), a click on the layer selects the layer effect above instead.
It seems like there is some kind of click through enabled. If I click on a transparent part of the layer, the layer below get selected instead.
My first thought was that this had something to do with "Autoselect layer/group", but it's disabled.
This drives me crazy, how can I go back to normal mode, so I can click anywhere in a layer, transparent or not, and move the items in it etc?
(I'm using Photoshop CS6.)

Are you using any MS Office third party Add-ins? Test: Remove third party Add-ins other than PDFMaker. Test to see if the MS Office apps run afterward.
Did you attempt to repair MS Office? Test: Go to Add/Remove Control Panel run Repair.
Finally, have you tried testing to see if it's PDFMaker? Test: Use the Add/Remove Control Panel to modify the Acrobat installation to remove PDFMaker. See if MS Office applications launch and behave correctly?

I understand that the display on your iPod nano (7th generation) is not responding to your touch as you would expect. In this situation, I would recommend reading over the attached article and working through the steps within to help resolve this issue.

Follow these steps if your iPod doesn't respond to your input or has a display-related issue.
Screen is unresponsive and displays Apple logo or white screen
Reset iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and Home button until you see the Apple logo appear. If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes.
If the Apple logo does not appear, or if the iPod is not seen in iTunes, connect it to iTunes and try to restore.
Touch screen does not accept input
Clean the screen with a microfiber polishing cloth.
Do not wear gloves while using the touchscreen. Do not use the touchscreen with wet hands or immediately after applying hand lotion. Moisture affects touchscreen behavior in the same manner as it affects a trackpad.
If you have a protective plastic sheet or film on the touchscreen, try removing it, because it may be preventing the touchscreen from working properly.
The current application may be unresponsive; try resetting iPod by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button and the Home buttons simultaneously for a least six seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Sync with iTunes and restore the iPod.

Can only select items with direct selection tool

I have been working on a design: one layer, with multiple groupings, nothing is locked. I'm trying to select the items with the selection tool, but can only select items with the direct selection tool (which is very inconvenient in this case). I can select the text with the text tool, but that really serves no purpose in my case. Anyone have any ideas as to what's going on? When I was working on it yesterday, everything was fine with all the tools. Thanks in advance.

It may be a corruption of preferences, or an issue outside Illy.
You may try to close down and just restart, or close down and restart pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cme+Option+Shift, or close down and use the suggestions in Move the folder or, if none of those suggestions help, have a look at the list in Other options

Opacity Masks in cs4 can't find layers with main objects on it.

I created image with flag and did clipping mask with some text. Now when I do a opacity mask my other layers disappear and i can't seem to bring them back. I use the transparency to mask and clip. After that my layers with the first original items I can't find them or get back to them. Can someone tell how I can resolve this problem.

Once you start editing your opacity mask, you have to go back into normal editing mode by clicking on the object on the left side in the transparency panel. Click on the right to edit the mask, click on the left to get back out of that to editing the rest of your document. It's a bit confusing the way it's set up - there's no obvious indication that you're editing your mask and are isolated from the rest of your document...

Can I select layers when exporting an Indesign book to PDF ?

I've created a book consisting of separate Indesign files, each containing different languages. Each language is in a separate layer.
I then created 4 different book which each contain about 5 files. This makes that I have 4 books with all languages spread over different layers. When I export the book to PDF I would like to be able to select the language layer so I can create a PDF file per language. I can open each file to hide all language layers except the one I want to export, but that is a time consuming work.
I am wandering if there is a quicker way to export to PDF each language without having to open and resave each separate Indesign file.

Why do you need to omit the French layer for a German book?
Just export with all the layers.
Then, in Acrobat, turn off the French (Italian, Spanish, English?) and leave German exposed.
Save as "Meine tollen deutschen Buchmarkt.pdf".
Then, turn off all the layers except Frenh, and save it as "Mon excellent livre français.pdf"
I promise you that no one outside of a very few people will ever know that there are layers with other languages hidden. Hardly anyone who uses Acrobat knows there are layers at all. (Except the brilliant people on this forum)

Can't select albums with photoshop elements 10 with iTunes 10.6

I first upgraded Itunesvto 10.6 and the downloaded the trial version of adobe photoshop elements 10, never had any previous photoshop versions. When I go into iTunes and go under the sync photos tab and select the photoshop elements for "sync from" I can't select albums, only all photos. I have only two "smart" albums in elements, but I figured they should be seen.
I tried a solution from another forum, but it did not work. It was:
1. Open catalogue in elements
2. Rename catalogue
3. Optimize renamed catalogue
4. Restart iTunes
This did not work.
I'd like to avoid manually updating the folders as I really only want to have the previous 3 or 6 months worth of photos on my iPad

I solved the mystery. It had to do with the file metadata in the Photoshop Elements catalog. When I moved the catalog (pictures) from my old machine to the new machine, the path (folder location) of the images changed. So, although the catalog had cached thumbnails of the photos to display in Photoshop Elements (which tricked me into thinking that the path to the images was correct), the paths were actually wrong. All I had to do was “reconnect” the missing images (a feature in Photoshop Elements which corrects missing/wrong paths to images) and now everything works correctly (sync in iTunes).

Can't select user with keyboard on login

I know this seems trivial, but these things usually mean a bigger underlaying problem.
When I restart the computer and the login screen appears, I used to be able to type the letter of the user I wanted to login as, then type the password and log in. But lately, I can't select the name by using the keyboard. I have to use the mouse to select the name, then type the password and log in.
Like I said, trivial, but does anyone know what's happening? The entire system has been acting quirky lately and I've rebuilt the permissions about 3 times a week for the past month. Should I zap the PRAM? I've also run Onyx twice in the last week, but it doesn't seem to help (one thing that's happening is that when I go to a web site,the progress bar in Safari seems to move across at a quick clip, but then it hangs for anywhere from 5-20 seconds while it's seemingly loading the graphics...I've reset the cache and cleared the history, but it still happens...I have DSL).
Is this going to require a reloading of the system? Geez, I hope not...

This is the third time I've had to use DW, and it's been a godsend each time. The first two times, the HD couldn't be recognized at all. I panicked, researched a little as to whether I should get DW or TechTool, then drove approximately 35 miles to the nearest mall (well, the nearest mall that has any decent stores in it!) and bought DW from Best Buy for $99. I needed it right away because I was in the middle of a project, so I couldn't wait for mail order.
I can't even guess as to how much it saved me in time and money by ressurecting that HD myself. I'm in the process of buying a 500GB internal to replace my Firewire drives, and I thought that I might also need a new one to replace the one with the system on it. But after today, I might just run DW once a month to keep it "clean and smooth."

Can't use layers with RAW images

I am using Photoshop Elements 10 and I can't use layers on RAW format images. I'm thinking I must have something set incorrectly. They open in the RAW adjustment window but when I select Open all the layer options are just greyed out and unavailable.
Any ideas?

In the camera raw dialog you probably have the Bit Depth set to 16 bits/channel.
Change the Bit Depth to 8 bits/channel
(bottom middle of camera raw dialog where is says Depth)
You can also change the bit depth once in photoshop elements 10 by going to Image>Mode and clicking on 8 bits/channel

Can I rename *selected* layers with scripting?

Let me just start off by saying I know NOTHING about Photoshop scripting.
But I recently encountered a need to rename a whole stack of layers in a certain file, so I went Googling...
I came across this Rename Layers script -- http://morris-photographics.com/photoshop/scripts/rename-layers.html
However, I was specifically interested in only renaming the layers that I have got selected in the Layers panel.
This script unfortunately renames *ALL* layers in the document.
Is it even possible to do what I want?

Can't open gif with transparent background?

Hey everyone, I'm just having a little issue with Photoshop at the moment.
I keep trying to open up some animated gifs that have transparent backgrounds, because I want to edit them and delete some frames . I know for a fact that the backgrounds are transparent because I've hosted them on websites before.
Now, when I try to open up the gifs, i go to: import> video frames to layers> type in *.* > open gif
The gifs ALWAYS open up with a white background. Is there any way around this so they open with the transparent background? Could I try opening them a different way maybe?

GIFs do not have genuine transparency. Only a specific color in teh palette is tagged as being transparent on saving, and that is done in Save for Web. You are misunderstanding how the file format works and the behavior is therefore otherwise correct. Your only option to preview that transparency in PS would be to edit the color palette under Image --> Mode --> Color Table or convert to RGB mode and remove the fill using selections. Anyway, moot point. No matter how you do it, you cannotr circumvent teh file format's limitations.

Can't get photo with transparent background to show up that way

I'm quite new to PSE (using ver. 6) so thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
I have a photo, and have made the background transparent, and saved it as a GIF file. When opened, it shows up with the checkered background. Good so far.
When I drag this photo from the Project Bin at the bottom (where I still see the checkerd background) into the image I'm working on, it shows up with a solid gray background once dropped into that image. So in essence, the background is no longer transparent.
How do I add this photo with the transparent background to the image I'm working on without a background / frame showing up? I've combed the internet and can't find an answer, and searching this forum, still coming up empty. I think the problem has to do with dragging it from the project bin. How else can I get it into the image I'm working on?

In PSE 6, dragging up from the project bin creates a special kind of passthrough layer. Copy/paste, or drag it down from the gif's image window into the other file in the project bin instead.

Can't select paper with Epson R1900

I am using a new r1900 with Photoshop Elements 6 and Aperture. In Aperture everything is great! I get the print dialogue box which features all the epson papers and theirr subtypes. (Glossy, Matte, Art and submenus) But in Elements I get an old dialogue box with 3 paper types. I can select icc profiles and set color management from inside Elements-all the profiles are there. But when I go to print-poof-no paper types. Why is Elements not showing what Aperture does? Have downloaded the latest drivers and updated Elements. Also-where does Apple drop that driver? Desperate to print.

Well, since it's not unique to PSE, I don't think this will help, but it can't hurt, either:
go to your username>library>preferences and delete;
com.adobe.Photoshop.Elements.plist
Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 paths
Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 settings
Opera preferences
Repair permissions.

CS2 - Can't select points with direct selection tool

Noramlly in CS5 and any other version of Photoshop or Illustrator that I know of, if you click a point in an object, it will show the handles for transforming the line. As I'm creating something today, it works for a while and then stops. Yesterday I had the same problem. I drew a few things and then suddenly, the Direct Select Tool is not showing any transform handles.
I can get them to show if I can click and drag a box over the point, but this is slow and doesn't work well for layered art. I already tried resetting my illustrator preferences. Any other ideas?
EDIT: Also, in CS5 there's a simple icon that you can click to convert the currently selected point from a curved point to an angled point. Is there not such a thing in CS2?
I ask because at work I only have access to CS2.

Sometimes Illy gets distracted an confused when others start intruding. The usual suspects are listen in Item 7 in Other options .
You did get rid of the preferences while Illy was alseep, no?

Smart mail box can't select messages with one or another e-mail addresses

I am creating smart mail box trying to collect there emails with two different email address
I select following options:
Contains messages that match ANY of the following conditions:
Entire message contains email address N1
Entire message contains email address N2
It returns not a single message. It looks to me that because I select ANY it should pull in all messages with email address N1 OR email address N2.
What do I do wrong?

If Connection Doctor cannot establish a reliable connection with the SMTP server, this is clearly a connection problem, and there is little you can do in Mail to fix it other than making sure your settings are what the server expects.
