Can't send- doesn't support authentication: Road Runner

Hello all,
I have a new Mac Book Pro and it won't accept the settings I am entering in Mail.
Mail automatically set up the first Road Runner (RR) account no problem and retrieved old mail from server but it wouldn't let me send mail or get mail soon after that.
I am getting "doesn't support authentication" message and have changed that setting with no luck. Also message of can't connect to SMTP server.
Anyone know if I should check SSL, which authentication I should check,
in prefs> acct> the 2nd line of info RR Pop is greyed out.
I know my passwords are right I copied them over from other 2 computers on my network that are getting mail and sending just fine. But who wants to use a G4 imac and iBook:)
Obviously I have a setting wrong.
thanks,
Al

Hi,
What Authentication are you using on this SMTP? If not already, try using None, and removing Password and Username from SMTP setup for at least one test. Most Roadrunner SMTP are authenticated by reference to the IP address of your Modem, and using a separate authentication of the SMTP results in failure.
Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information, then click on the arrows beside the name of the SMTP in the section on Outgoing Server. After you click on the arrows, choose Edit Server List. Then if the SMTP is set up with the correct name, etc, click on the Advance Tab, use Custom Port with Port 25, None as authentication, and do not enter any Username and Password. Under authentication of None, the name of the SMTP will not have your Username appended.
Let us know, but Roadrunner can vary from area to area on this, but this is the way it seems to always work.

  • SMTP Doesn't Support Authentication

I have a second generation iPOD Touch (32 GB) which can receive e-mail over Wi-Fi but can't send e-mail over Wi-Fi. I get the following error messages:"smtp doesn't support authentication; or "smtp account verification failed"; or "the connection to the outgoing server [insert server name here] failed." I have deleted and re-entered the information for my mail account numerous times but that has not helped. I have even "reset" the iPOD. What am I doing wrong in setting up my mail account which prohibits it from sending e-mail on Wi-Fi? I have the latest version of iTUNES so that is not the issue. Is this a port problem? My outgoing server port is set to 25 and my incoming server port is set to 110. My SSL setting is set to off. Also I am using password authentication. Any suggested "fixes" will be greatly appreciated.

I asked this same exact question a short time ago, and Jason L responded with with very good explanation. I have since used my used the google smtp server to send email VIA my touch.

  • Can't Send Email When On The Road

Hello - My son has a Roadrunner acct. When he's on the road, he can receive mail via hte Mail app; but he can't send it. Does he need to edit his emai settings while on the road? Thank you!

    Hello.
It all depends on the policy of whoever is the ISP at each location and the method used by the outgoing (SMTP) server to determine whether you’re a legitimate user. Note that when you’re not at home, the ISP at that location is usually not the same as the ISP when you’re at home.
In an attempt to fight spam, many ISPs restrict the ability to send using an outgoing (SMTP) server not owned by them, usually by blocking port 25 for all traffic outside their own network, which means you cannot send with an SMTP server not owned by them if configured to use that port number. And it may happen the other way around as well, i.e. the outgoing server itself may look at the IP address you’re connecting from and refuse the connection if you’re outside its own network.
Something that often works is changing the outgoing server port to 587 (or whatever alternate port number the outgoing server listens to) instead of 25 and using some form of authentication in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server > Server Settings, but two conditions must be satisfied for this change to work: (1) the ISP must not block that port as well AND (2) the outgoing server in question must listen to that port and accept a form of authentication not based on the IP address you’re connecting from.
Independent mail service providers not tied to a particular ISP, such as .Mac and Gmail, do allow authenticated SMTP access on port 587, which is the reason changing the outgoing server port number solves the problem for them if the ISP doesn’t block that port as well.
The following article, for example, describes several ways to address this issue in the case of .Mac, but can be useful for other mail accounts as well (not just .Mac), and applies to all versions of Mac OS X (not just Mac OS X 10.4.2 and earlier as the article states):

    The receiving email ports are:

    POP is port 110
    POP-SSL is port 995
    Outgoing ports are...

  • How can I send screenshots to Support

Why would Firefox all of a sudden open and NOT go to the home page? I saved screenshots of the error, but there is no means by which to send them to you...which is truly dumb!

You can't attach a screenshot to the first post that starts a thread, but you can do that in subsequent replies.
It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Road runner home page with os9

As of yesterday I am unable to get the roadrunner home page using internet explorer for mac 5.1 with os 9.2. I can still surf the web but no road runner home page. road runner and apple were unable to help me. my computer has 10.1 on it but I would have to get drivers if they are available for all my applications and even 10.1 only uses internet explorer 5.1
What to do? Has anybody had this problem
    Joan K

    rightwingnut, welcome to Apple Discussions.
What is the URL (address) of the Roadrunner home page? Is this it: http://www.rr.com/rdrun/
I had no problem accessing it with Mozilla or IE 5.1. I switched to Mozilla for OS 9 & like it better than IE. It works on web pages that IE has problems with. Plus, Mozilla has a pop-up ad blocker & a password manager. Download Wamcom's Mozilla browser at:

  • TS4002 Can you tell me if the smtp settings have changed recently?  I use me/ICloud mail with Outlook and can not receive emails but outgoing emails are no longer working.  Error message is: Authentication failed because Outlook doesn't support any of the

I am able to receive messages on my IMac using Outlook but am unable to send.  I've had no trouble in the past but began receiving the following messages today.
5.7.8 Bad username or password (Authentication failed).
Authentication failed because Outlook doesn't support any of the available authentication methods.
I am able to send messages using this account on my IPhone and IPad so the IMac is the only place I am having issues.  Any advice?

Here are the correct settings. They have never changed since iCloud debuted a year ago.
    Server information
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
    Server name: imap.mail.me.com
    SSL Required: Yes
    Port: 993
Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
    Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
    SSL Required: Yes
    Port: 587
    SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    Password: Your iCloud password
Note: If you receive errors using SSL, try using TLS instead. SSL is required for both IMAP and SMTP connection with iCloud. POP is not supported by iCloud.

  • Authentication failed Entourage doesn't support available authentication...

I tried to set up and exchange account through Entourage. It works fine for receiving, but I cannot send through the account, I assume because I do not have a Certificated Authorization. So I tried to create a Certificate, since the help and instructions suggested such. This meant I had to create on in my Keychain.
Well nothing worked, so I decided I would cheat and just create an account to send from Entourage using my exchange email account as an alias. The down side being exchange would not capture the "Sent" messages. Oh Well, I could live with that.
This is when I started getting this error and Entourage would not send the message:
"Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the available authentication methods."
I eventually learned to go to the Keychain and try to verify the error and repair it. The error that appears on verification is:
"Item “mail.bellsouth.net” has unspecified value for port attribute"
Once the repair is executed, it shows it is repaired, but Entourage will still not send mail. So,...yes there is more...I decided to create an identical account to my working bellsouth account, that still works perfectly by the way, and the new account demonstrates the same problem and will not send, but all settlings are identical to my original POP3/SMTP account.
Help! I do not have time machine running, but that is another issues, so lets see if I can fix this first.
Thanks for whoever can come to the rescue!
    BarryCuda

I believe this is a KeyChain issue, not an Entourage issue, but it is hard to tell. Can you tell? The reason I believe this is because I now cannot create an duplicate Account and have the KeyChain work properly with Entourage.
I will post there as well, but please provide some guidance if you can. Where would I post KeyChain issue? I couldn't quite find a germane Forum.
Sorry if I posted in the wrong place, but I have to start somewhere since it is not clear where the problem lies.
    Thanks,

  • Authentication failed because Outlook doesn't support any of the available authentication methods.

When attempting to check and send email from my Mac via iCloud, I keep getting the error "Authentication failed because Outlook doesn't support any of the available authentication methods." I have change just about everything I can see available, but continue to get this message.
I am able to send email via iCloud using my .Me and .Mac adresses, and that tells me that it is not able to store "sent emails" on iCluud and will store them loaclly on my computer. I can handle this, but whem going to iCloud Web page haave nothing withing the "sent" mailbox.
Using OS 10.7.2, and Outlook 2011 version 14.1.3
    Thanks in advance......

I got the following from the microsoft Web site. Also, the SMPT port must be overwriten. Use port 587

  • Can't send email because of 'password authentication' error message.

I am having a problem sending email. I can receive emails but not send. The message I am getting is "The SMTP server "mail.grandecom.net" (my provider's server) doesn't support Password authentication. Please check you account settings..."
I have checked my account settings and tried all of the variables many, many times already. i have called my ISP and confirmed the settings with them. I have 4 different mail clients on my computer and they will all correctly receive and send using the same settings as those on the ipad yet still get them same error message.
I am using the iPad over wi-fi.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I would delete the problem email account and re-enter the the account. It is easy to make an error in setting up the account but hard to find the error and that is why deleting and reentering it is often better,

  • IMAC seems not compatible with Road Runner. Can send, not reply or send

Started having problems with RR on IMAC/Leopard. RR says it is a MAC problem. Can receive but not reply or send, so I have to go to webmail, wasting time. Is it better to use Mac Mail? Would that solve the problem?

This is a known issue with road runner e-mail and the mac mail app. Seeing as the mac mail app works just fine with any other e-mail provider, logically the issue is with road runner's e-mail service.
In my experience, Road Runner is severely lacking in Mac support. When I used to use them (I recently switched to FiOS), any time I would call support due to an outage, I was always told that "our internet doesn't work with macs" or "the problem is that you have a mac. You need to call Apple for support."
At any rate, if you want to use mac mail, I would suggest getting a new e-mail provider, such as Gmail.
