Can't send emails away from home

I have sucessfully set up email on my laptop, to receive and send emails using Outlook 2003. II have recently been travelling, using a dongle for connection to the 3 mobile phone network. Although I could still receive emails, I could not send any. The test message (from the email set-up screen) said could not find the outgoing server and sending test message failed. I had to revert to my blueyonder account (which I wish to close), which did work. What do I need to do to resolve this problem?

Try changing the SMTP port from 25 to 587. This should work when connected to both BT network and 3 network.

Sending email away from home

I use a iBook G4 that I have set up wireless Airport in my home. I am able to send and receive emails at home. I have DSL provided by Cavalier and use Safari email program.
I am able to pick up WiFi signals in my travels as a sales rep. and can receive emails. The problem is I can't send emails. I checked with my Internet provider and they tell me to go their web site to send emails. That works for regular emails, but I work with a Filemaker software to generate sales orders that I email to vendors. I am not able to send these emails when I pick up a WiFi signal away from home.
Any suggestions.

Safari isn't an e-mail program, it's a Web browser. When you use Cavalier's Webmail, you do so with a browser (such as Safari).
The Filemaker generated e-mail is probably using an e-mail client, such as Mail, to send the message. When you're sending from a 'foreign', not-Cavalier network (which is what happens when you hitch on someone else's WiFi signal, unless they happen to be a Cavalier customer), The Cavalier SMTP server won't send the e-mail. Many ISPs have adopted this tactic as a way of slowing down the spam avalanche. In some cases, they have established mechanisms to require authentication and use ports other than the popular port 25. It sounds like Cavalier has decided to lock things down a little tighter and requires you to use their Webmail when you're out of network.
One thing you can do is to let Filemaker generate the e-mail, then copy and paste it into Cavalier's Webmail to send it.

IPad wont send emails away from home wifi

My iPad sends and receives emails when I'm using my home wifi - but will only receive and not send emails when I am away and using other wifi. Sent messages sit in the outbox until I get home - then they go. Any thoughts?

Somehow I got it to work, a whole lot easier than i thought, kind of scary how easy... but Im not exactly sure what of several things is how I got it. Scariest thing; watching my iBook I wouldn't know that I was accessing it from the MB. It's only me doing it, but still seems so easy.
If I have a WPA2 password protected wireless network do I have to worry that others can access it so easily? (not that I have anything interesting, it's just the general privacy paranoia)

Go to http:mail.mac.com/yourusername and log in with your .Mac password.
From here you should be able to read your mails.
Next time you're back home and login with Mail, your read messages will still download (unless you've deleted them of course)

This is a common anti-spam technique for ISPs to prevent mail from being sent from anywhere other than your service location. Ask Road Runner if there are any specific settings you can use to circumvent this.

Typically that happens when your mail service provider is also your ISP, and you connect to it from another network. The SMTP server will allow connections without a password from anywhere, but it will only relay mail from within the ISP's network.
If you need to send mail from outside your ISP's network, use an independent mail service provider. I don't have a specific recommendation.

Outgoing emails away from home

When away from home (ISP TalkTalk) I find I can receive emails fine, but I cannot send emails on Mac Mail. This happened with my last ISP as well. Is there anyway of correcting this whilst still using Mac Mail? I have tried using different outgoing servers, but there seems to be something missing.

This issue is totally dependent upon the internet provider at the venues you visit while away from home, and also upon whether your ISP provides a SMTP that is fully authenticated and works on a Port other than Port 25. The latter is being increasingly blocked by most providers, and SMTP that trust you at your home venue only by reference to your authentication of the Incoming Server or the IP address of the Modem provided by your ISP are likely to not work when away. This is not related to Mail per se, but any email client.
Ask your ISP is they have a SMTP that works on Port 587 or Port 465 for you to use when away from home.

I have three e-mail addresses that I use on the iPhone however for one of them I can only send e-mail when I am at home using my wi-fi. If I am anywhere else using wi-fi or 3G I get a sender address was invalid message.

Many ISPs only allow access to their smtp servers (the server that sends mail, which is different that the one for receiving mail) over their own network. Others require different settings when connecting from outside (which you're doing when you're on 3G/EDGE). Another option is to use AT&T's outgoing mail server to send. You can enable that in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar > tap account > Outgoing Mail Server/SMTP > set AT&T SMTP server to ON. That way, the AT&T server will be used away from home (as long as you're connected to 3G/EDGE/GPRS - if you're connected to another Wi-Fi network it won't work) and your ISPs server will be used at home.

Can I use iCloud away from home on my iPhone5s?

I thought that it worked that way, but I seem to be mistaken. I can use it when on the same block as my home, but not otherwise. 4S can't send emails unless on home Wifi

I was given an Iphone4S and I'm on Orange/EE provider. When I set up the email account I got a msg "Outgoing mail server setting is provided for 02 customers in the UK. 02 customers should enter their 02 email address in primary outgoing mail server". Orange/EE is my provider. I receive emails ok but when I try to send using my Talktalk server, the msg is "The sender name was rejected by the server". Can anyone help me please?

How many other networks have your tried? It appears that the network(s) other than the yours is blocking the ports used for sending mail.

I am new to this technology. I need to send email notification to the user's, whenever file is checked-in. What is the procedure to send an email notification let us take GMAIL from UCM.
1) Now I have installed UCM in my machine. Do I need to install any other software to implement this feature(sending email)?

You will need to have an SMTP server of some sort that you can use. I think out of the box, you may only be able to use an SMTP server that allows anonymous sending or sending unauthenticated (e.g. an internal server). Any good SMTP server (that is not an internal server) would not allow this for security reasons.
Thus, I think if you want to use an external SMTP server such as Gmail, you will need to write custom Java code. See this thread for more information: UCM SMTP server Configuration
