Can't send mail after security update

Hello, I installed a security update friday night, and can no longer send email using either Mail 2.1 or Thunderbird. Both were working prior to the security update.
I am not getting any error messages except for the ones over the phone that go..."did you get my email? What email?" In fact, both Mail and Thunderbird give every indication that the email was sent.
I can mail myself a test from a web program, so my smtp server is working.
I can receive mail fine.
I am blaming the security update for this, but I have no idea where to look or what to do. Can I uninstall the update?

The thing is, AFAIK Mail wouldn't put the message in the Sent mailbox unless it has received confirmation from the outgoing server that the message has indeed been sent, so it seems to me that the problem is not that messages are not being sent, but rather that they don't arrive at the destination for some reason.
I bcc myself on every email for filing reasons and have
not recieved one of my own emails since Friday night.
Do you receive other mail normally? Have you checked for those messages on the web?
I can log into my employers web tool and send email that way,
so something is going on with my machine, whatever it is.
Well, not necessarily. Maybe there is something wrong with the outgoing server you're using in Mail. Is this your only mail account? Do you have access to any other outgoing server that you could try?

    I can not get the mail app to run.  This is the error message I keep getting.
    Did the SecUpd2012-004 update.
    After the update, I had (and still have) 2 copies of mail in my application folder.
    I've repaired my permissions.
    Tried to got back using the time machine (that was a waste of hours).
    Also, deleted the mail app (8.1) and then reinstalled the SecUpd2012-004.
    Only thing I haven't done is to do the Combo 10.6.8 update.
    I've noticed that other people are starting similar threads.  Anybody have a solution?  I've been working on it all day and no joy.

    Well, I thought that we might have had a solution, but no such luck.
    I did the combined update - and after that I had only one Mail app in the applications folder (encouraging) - and it appeared to be the correct one by it's icon.
    Thought about doing a repair permissions but didn't do it after the combined update.
    After the combined update, I did the secUpd, the second mail app was there with it's generic icon again and
    Needless to say, I'm back to square 1.
    So, I'm thinking I've got some options here.  One of my options would be to get another HD, slug it into one of the open HD slots, take out my 10.6 CD format it and then if possible use time machine to put that drive in the state where everything worked right before the update.  This would seem to be the fastest, time wise way of making the issue go away.
    You guys think I could / should delete the 4.6 mail app and start over with the combined update and then do a permissions repair after the update?

    After I installed the latest AirPort update, I can no longer send emails through Mac Mail but I can still receive them. I can send emails if I plug my MacBook directly into the cable service router through the ethernet port. According to my ISP (Cox), I have Mail configured to work properly. Is there a setting on the AirPort that I need to change?

    The error message says:
    "The sender address [my email address] was rejected by the server smtp.east.cox.net.
    Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered."
    There is only one server I can use. There is a button for the Connection Doctor, and that shows all green lights.

    I can't send email after the iOS7 update....this is a show stopper for me.   When is a fix expected?

    First it would help if you explain exactly what happens when you send an email. 
    Do you get an error message?
    If so what does the message say?
    The abilitly to send or receive emails does not fall on Apple or the IOS 7.
    You email provider gives you that ability.
    Double check and make sure your outgoing mail server is correct.

    Mail gets stuck in Outbox on occasion after installing 2007-005 security update. Need to quit Mail and restart for mail to be sent. I am using Google mail.

    What are your smtp mail server settings?
    Lots of trouble with people using smtp.mac.com on port 25 in the last week. If that is your setting, change to port 587.
    If you don't use smtp.mac.com, disregard this advice.

    I don't know if it could be coincidence, but I had been receiving and sending email all day long until I installed the latest update (10.5.5). Since the installation completed, I have not been able to send mails (receiving is okay). The program keeps trying, but just keep son trying with nothing happening.     Consider yourselves lucky. I can't send or receive email or connect to the internet AT ALL since installing whatever updates came down this morning (9/24/08).     Well, the topic pretty much says it all. After I upgraded to 10.4.6 I can no longer send mails. This happens with three completely unrelated SMTP servers, so I'm pretty sure it's a Mail problem. Receiving mails works without any problems and excepte the return of the ugly bubbles everything else is working fine as well.
    I already re-entered my login values, didn't change a thing.

    I didn't even update. One day Mail just stopped sending mail. Can't remember doing anything specific. Looks like a common problem these days from having read several discussion boards. I'm on the bandwagon. Reinstalled, created new accounts, triple checked, checked with ISP, disabled password authentication...
    I even tried downloading another mail program, Revolver, but that can't send either, so I'm stumped, both recieved mail just dandy. In Revolver it gives a better hint to the problem "SMTP Error 103 (Name Resolution Error)", Doesn't help much though. As I understand, 103 is just a general error anyway.

    I haven't been able to send mail using the mail.app via Charters STMP since I applied the last security upgrade from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7. Any ideas?

    I've tried rebooting the computer. Resetting the cable modem. Spoke with Charter and it's not on their end. So I'm stumpped. Any clue?

    I am having trouble now sending email - like many others aparently. I receive a message when trying to send mail:
    - a dialog box requests the authentication password for the smtp server
    When entering the correct password it simply repeats. I have had no trouble up to this point. I can log into both accounts via the web using the correct password.
    I am having this problem
    - on a BT Internet account,
    - and my Yahoo account as well,
    both of which I use on Mail for business.
    Please help?!

    Question answered in another string - British Telecom changed outgoing servers for me and things seem to be working again - fault is a mystery though. Sorry I cannot help others in this strange situation.

    Please help - new to Macs and I installed automatic update of 10.6.8 - 4 days ago and now I can't open up mail  - it says "You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X. You tried to open Mail version 4.5 (1084/1085) in Applications/ Mail.
    So I went to  Applications, says this message again. So I   used my discs that  came with the computer adn installed again  Applications - no luck.
    I had luckily  backed up 2 days before this update - so went to Time Machine - did restore - now good still - can't  open mail. CLick on Iconand get same messgae .

    Most likely because you have Finder's preferences->Advanced->Show all filename extensions unchecked. Check it, log out, and back in and all the apps should display the .app extension.
    Now, back to your problem. If you installed the Security Update 2012-004, it failed to update Mail to 4.6; thus, your problem. Manually DL it from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586 and reinstall it.

I find I cannot send mail messages although I can receive them fine on my Mac Mini.  This follows having reset my googlemail password.  I can send and receive with no problem on my other Apple devices: iPhone and iPad. The Mac Mini is updated to the latest OS.  Any helpful hints would be very gratefully received!

    So, I seem to have resolved the problem by resetting the password in Mail>Preferences and editing the SMPT server list from the drop down in Outgoing Mail Server (SMPT) by putting in the new password.  But thanks for looking at this, hopefully, this might help someone with the same issue.

    Anyone having trouble sending email after upgrading? I can receive it fine, but sending has been a no-go for nearly 24 hours now. All my server settings are accurate and my ISP reporst no issues on their end.

    I've been having this problem for weeks, and many other have too, if you go back through the forum. In my case I'm using a Sprint mobile broadband modem (Sierra Compass 597) on my MacBook Pro. I can receive but not send - but erratically. Sometime is works just fine. I've done all the troubleshooting and had long conversations with the support people at my isp. Works for awhile, but then deteriorates.
    But I CAN ALWAYS send over my old dial-up land line modem!
    And as for the Sprint modem - it works just fine on my wife's PC to the same isp.
    She's considering replacing it with a Mac, but not until I solve this issue!
    Every day I check for a software update - but in vain. I even took it to the Geniuses at my local Apple store and they were stumped.
