Can't send mail: connection to server timed out

Every time I go out of the USA I have problems with mail. Sometimes they go away by themselves........this one is not. I am in israel; I receive mail but when I send i get the message "connection to server smtp on port 587 timed out........
How can I fix this and also not have problems everytime I am abroad??

I've been having a problem sending and receiving. I'm on a slow shared wi-fi connection. Does speed affect the mail connection? Will it time out if it takes too long to download the messages? And can if so, can I change the "time out" time to a longer duration to allow for the slower speed?

  • Can't sent mail. connection to server on port 25 timed out.

Can't send mail. Connection to the server on port 25 timed out. I keep getting this error when sending mail. I can receive mail but just can't send.
When I connect directly to the cable modem, thus removing the Airport from the set up, the mail sends fine. I recently updated the Airport with firmware update 5.7 and I'm wondering if there are some settings on the airport that may be affecting this? Any ideas on what I'm missing? I'm baffled.
I am using a 17" Powerbook running OS 10.3.9 and connecting wirelessly to an Airport Extreme. I'm using Apple Mail as my email software, but I have also tried to send through Entourage with no luck. I am using an email account and SMTP server provided by my ISP. I also have an old iMac running 10.3.5 that is wired directly to the Airport. I have an email account set up on the iMac and can't send from there either.

I tried changing the MTU on the iMac which is wired directly to the airport.(I have an old iMac running 10.3.5 and a Powerbook G4- the G4 connects wirelessly to the airport) I changed it to 1492 but didn't still wasn't able to send mail. I feel like I'm stabbing in the dark with this, is there a way to determine what the packet size should be?
MTU will vary with connection type. Cable and non-PPPoE, can use up to 1500, whereas PPPoE connections (WinPoet, RASPPPOE, Enternet, etc.) can only use up to 1492. For secure VPN connections (i.e., IPSec) use a MTU value less than 1500.
The best value for MTU is that value just before the packets get fragmented. To test, use the Ping utility.
    OS X: ping -D -s 1472 www.dslreports.com
    WinXP: ping -f -l 1472 www.dslreports.com
Reduce 1472 by 10 until you no longer get the “packet needs to be fragmented” error message. Then increase by 1 until you are 1 less from getting the same error message. Add 28 more to this (since your ping packet size, not including IP/ICMP header is 28 bytes). This will be your MaxMTU. (Note: If you can ping thru at 1472, stop, you’re done! Add 28 and your MaxMTU is 1500.)
    Some typical MTU values:
1500: The biggest sized IP packet that can normally traverse the Internet without getting fragmented. Typical MTU for non PPPoE, non VPN connections.
1492: The MaxMTU recommended for Internet PPPoE implementations.
1472: The maximum ping data payload before fragmentation errors are received on non-PPPoE, non-VPN connections.
1464: The maximum ping data payload before fragmentation errors are received when using PPPoE connected machine.
1460: TCP Data size (MSS) when MTU is 1500 and not using PPPoE.
1452: TCP Data size (MSS) when MTU is 1492 and using PPPoE.
1400: MaxMTU for PPTP Tunneling VPN (Win2K/WinXP).
576: Typically recommended as the MTU for dialup type applications...leaving 536 bytes of TCP data.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Connection to server timed out

This does not immediately occur when I launch mail, but does so after some time (can be up to an hour or 2). I get this message:
'The server returned the error: The connection to the server “pop.netspace.net.au” on port 110 timed out.'
This also occurred recently with my .mac email. The port for that one is 993.
Is there anyway of solving this so my email works all the time it is open.

Just converted my mother in law over to a new 21.5" iMac. Originally I was using Entourage without any problems (well problems like this Entourage is another story) but I thought "mail" would be better for her.
I'm getting the same problem on her POP3 account - port 110 timed out. It seems to just come and go??
Very frustrating when your trying to convince someone the iMac is better than her old windows machine but can't send mail reliably!

  • Unable to send - connection to server timed out

I'm lately having problems sending mail with Mail.app. A few days ago I started getting the following error message:
Cannot send message using the server smtp.mac.com:username
The connection to the server "smtp.mac.com" on port 993 timed out.
I didn't deal with it at the time because I was using a hotel wireless connection and just assumed it was a problem with their setup; however, I'm now having the problem at home.
I haven't changed any settings at all, and it started before installing the latest update. Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this and what to do about it?
    Thanks, Rick

When I first set up this account, under the advanced tab it had port 993 by default, but it was grayed out. I was unable to change it using mail.app preferences, but tried a test message, and when it wouldn't send used the option to edit the server list. I changed it to port 25 there, and it now works. For some reason, when I look at the advance tab under preferences, it still has port 993 and still grayed out. It now works, but I don't understand why it would still show port 993.
In any case, thanks for the help.

  • Can't send mail; wrong outgoing server?

My mom has having problems sending mail. I am personally a windows user so i don't know too much about the mail program or the OS in general (i'm using my dad's account). Originally the error message was something short about checking the server settings. Now the message is:
Cannot send message using the server smtp.mac.com
The server response was: 5.7.1 <[email protected]>... Relaying denied, try authenticating.
Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings.
Message from: [my mom] <[my mom]@mac.com>
send message using: [drop down bar for selecting alternative servers]
(edit message) (use selected server) (try again later)
What exacly is the problem? she said she didn't change any settings or anything like that and it started this afternoon.

According to the .Mac web site 10/02/2006
EMail was unavailable for 3 hour(s) to some .Mac Members.I suspect your Mom's email is working normally now.

My mail is getting stuck in outbox, but I am receiving mail just fine. Message says 'server timed out'. What can i do to fix this?

    Hello Naila1,
It sounds like you are unable to send emails, as they go straight to the outbox, but you can get the emails without issue. I recommend using the Connection Doctor to help you troubleshoot what is happening with the following article:

  • Postfix/smtp[8437] Operation timed out can't send mail to 1 address

server 10.4.5 running mail, filesharing and website.
The mail server has been up for months working fawlessly. We have one address (domain) where we can't send mail, and users at that address can't send us mail.
All other mail functions on both ends seem to be functioning fine.
They seem to be running exchange as a mail server, but i don't have other details from their side. DNS/MX records all look like you would expect.
    This has me stumped.
i turned debug level loging on and got the following smtp message written to the log when i tried to mail to an address at that domain.
    Feb 23 20:45:10 fileserver postfix/smtp[8437]: 775401AFD61: to=<[email protected]>, relay=none, delay=31, status=deferred (connect to anhc-mail.anhc.org[24.237.2.213]: Operation timed out)

    Yes, good luck to them.
    relay=none
    doesn't look so good.
Of course, a successful outgoing message should look something more like:
    Apr 8 11:41:05 server postfix/smtp[2300]: F1D4D3B8A27: to=<[email protected]>, relay=mail.someobfuscatedserver.com[6x.20x.148.1x6], delay=5, status=sent (250 2.0.0 k38FYfDS023848 Message accepted for delivery)
I take it you can send to any/all other mail addresses (servers) ?
    Here's a thought:
Some time ago, I had to edit the helo_checks config of postfix, for a windows mailserver because their AntiVirus was horribly mangling their outgoing mail, helo-ing as <fix-your-dns>.local
Point being that .local anything is not a viable tld for anything in the public realm, and certainly won't work with the rest of the world in terms of DNS.
That might be the work of Norton's break-it-for-you addon for Windows Exchange mailservers, not sure.
    Please post the output of:
    postconf -n
    on your server,
and the mail.log file content when they try to send you an email (confirm via telephone and watch for it).

  • Can't send mail - server properly configured and up

I'm unable to send mail. Here's roughly the sequence of events that
    got me where I am:
    1) Connect through a firewall using VPN (the Cisco VPN client)
    over the wireless interface
    2) Compose a message, and click 'Send'
    3) The server is down, so I get the "Can't send e-mail" pop-up
    dialog
    4) Click 'Try later'
    5) Reconnect later while the server is up, and try to send
    6) Still see the "Can't send" pop-up
Steps 3) and 4) happened a lot. In particular, turning on the
wireless interface in order to connect over VPN causes Mail to try
(and fail) to connect to the server.
The server is up; I can reach it with "telnet <server> 25".
Moreover, Mail's own "Connection Doctor" says it's able to connect
    to the server.
This configuration worked until the sequence of events described above,
and nothing on the server side has changed since.
I've tried everything I can think of to get Mail back in a working state.
Notably I've deleted the contents of "Outbox", quit Mail, and then restarted.
I've also deleted and re-created the server configuration, without success.

    Two additional data points:
    1) I found a mail server I could use from outside the firewall.
When I added that server, and closed the VPN session, Mail was
(finally!) able to send. (But see below why you shouldn't rush
    to blame VPN).
    2) When there are two mail servers configured in preferences, the
"Can't send mail" pop-up gives you the list of choices. If you
select an alternate server from the list, the "Try selected
server" button ought to try the new server. Instead, the
pop-up reappears, still complaining about the old server.
As for why I'm not prepared to blame (only) the VPN:
    * Note that the server is perfectly accessible; telnet works,
and Mail's Connection Doctor says the server is up.
    * Point 2) above indicates some problem in Mail with the logic
for retrying access to the failed server.
