Can't send mail - server rejecting

I have had Mac Mail set up with rochester.rr.com mail for 1 1/2 years. No problems. The only change I made yesterday was I set up a new user on my imac for my wife. We share email account, so I set up Mac mail with the same settings, and it worked fine.
Now I can receive mail, but not send. The RR people do not use authentication, and use Port 25. The connection doctor communicates with in and outgoing servers fine (green lights)
I chatted with RR help, and they of course blame apple. I cannot see what could cause this.
Please help!
Thanks.
bob
"The sender address [email protected] was rejected by the server smtp-server.rochester.rr.com."

Not sure what fixed it, nut it is now working. In the course of events I deleted the mailbox and lost all mail. I was able to recover using time machine and searching this forum to replace the "mail" folder in my account.
Another great mystery not solved, but resolved.

  • Can't send mail- password rejected

I just got a new MacBook and after setting up Mail, I can receive emails but I can't send them. I get an error message that reads "The SMTP server “smtpauth.earthlink.net” rejected the password. Please re-enter your password, or cancel." But then when I re-enter the password, it still rejects it. I've read every troubleshooting thing I can find, but nothing will solve this problem. I've checked the outgoing mail server, my user name and password and everything is correct. And I still can't send mail. HELP!

    Hi
You need to check with your ISP whether or not the send mail server (SMTP) requires a password.  Some do, but many do not.  When you know the correct password to send mail, then you need to tell Mail as follows:
Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts > Select the account
Click on the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) combo box, and select Edit SMTP Server List...
In the Account Information tab put the server name
In the Advanced Tab, set up the authentication information from your ISP.
    Good luck

  • Can't send mail - server properly configured and up

I'm unable to send mail. Here's roughly the sequence of events that
    got me where I am:
    1) Connect through a firewall using VPN (the Cisco VPN client)
    over the wireless interface
    2) Compose a message, and click 'Send'
    3) The server is down, so I get the "Can't send e-mail" pop-up
    dialog
    4) Click 'Try later'
    5) Reconnect later while the server is up, and try to send
    6) Still see the "Can't send" pop-up
Steps 3) and 4) happened a lot. In particular, turning on the
wireless interface in order to connect over VPN causes Mail to try
(and fail) to connect to the server.
The server is up; I can reach it with "telnet <server> 25".
Moreover, Mail's own "Connection Doctor" says it's able to connect
    to the server.
This configuration worked until the sequence of events described above,
and nothing on the server side has changed since.
I've tried everything I can think of to get Mail back in a working state.
Notably I've deleted the contents of "Outbox", quit Mail, and then restarted.
I've also deleted and re-created the server configuration, without success.

    Two additional data points:
    1) I found a mail server I could use from outside the firewall.
When I added that server, and closed the VPN session, Mail was
(finally!) able to send. (But see below why you shouldn't rush
    to blame VPN).
    2) When there are two mail servers configured in preferences, the
"Can't send mail" pop-up gives you the list of choices. If you
select an alternate server from the list, the "Try selected
server" button ought to try the new server. Instead, the
pop-up reappears, still complaining about the old server.
As for why I'm not prepared to blame (only) the VPN:
    * Note that the server is perfectly accessible; telnet works,
and Mail's Connection Doctor says the server is up.
    * Point 2) above indicates some problem in Mail with the logic
for retrying access to the failed server.

  • Can't Send Mail - "Address rejected by server"

I cannot send mail as of last night. I have browsed these forums and come close to an answer, but not quite. Here are my particulars:
    Mail app.
    .Mac email address
Rogers Highspeed for ISP (but only a .Mac address)
    And here's what happened:
Tried to send a bulk email, 189 persons, with a picture attachment (150 kb) And since then (last night) have not been able to send. Message I get is as follows:
"This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
The sender address [email protected] was rejected by the server."
So I tried to change ports from 25 to 587, and back.
I deleted the Account, twice, and added it again.
    Checked the SMTP server lists.
    Deleted the apple.plist
    Deleted the Mail cache
    Connection Doctor 2 green lights
I understand it has something to do with a Spam blocker, but I only use .Mac for my email, I have no other account. So I don't know how to change the smtp server to an account I don't have.
My ISP is Rogers, (Canada) their SMTP address is smtp.rogers.broadband.com; Mail won't connect to this server.
So what else can I do? I also received a 4.0.0. message saying I exceeded my 400 senders in a 24 hour period, but I only sent less than 200, and it's been more than 24 hours by now.
    Thanks for your help;
    D.

Just a crazy shot in the dark, but could you change your smtp settings for the .mac account? (I'm guessing mail.mac.smtp or something... I have no experience with .mac personally).
Normally, from what I understand, a lot of ISP prefer there own smtp settings (smtp.yahoo.com) which I would normally say to try, but obviously you are doing that with Roger.
Can you quickly set up an email account with Roger? your paying for that aren't you?
If not that, delete the outgoing mail box items. Start over...Selecting under 200 (click on one name, and "shift"down about 200? I guess) drag and drop into the email "To"... then do that again tommorow.
Other than that, all I can think of is getting your own .com/net/org or something, thru a Web Host Provider that allows that much out going mail.
Personally, I'm not so sure of the purpose of getting a .mac account... there seems to be too many limitations on what you can do with it, as opposed to just getting your own .com or .net account

  • Can't send mail: server cannot verify

I have been unable to send mail from ONE of my accounts for a few days. My host has been helping but no luck. Green lights in connection doctor, no problems with another a/c on the same server.
tried changing port to 587, changing / deleting server list.
Any suggestions welcome. Tried clicking 'ssl' as suggested in one thread but port didn't change. so far have tried 25 and 587. No problem telnetting to the server on 25 or 110.
Not tried changing port to 110 yet. (Host has not suggested this)

What kind of account is this, POP or IMAP? Who is the ISP/email provider? What are the specific settings for Incoming and Outgoing servers, including port numbers, authentication method, and whether or not SSL is enabled on each?

  • Cannot send mail - server rejects address

Anyone know why I get this message half the time when I attempt to send an email, and usually in a day or so the mail will go ahead and send?.. I know the address is a valid email address.

igmackenzie's method is reported by many to work.
However, deleting your mail account will also delete the emails in your Outbox that you are trying to send. This is a problem when you have several in your Outbox, many of which have been carefully crafted.
So before you do so, if you don't want to lose your hard work composing your unsent emails, be sure to copy & paste each one into another application, i.e. Notes.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Can't send mail with server -- upgrade OS?

I have a new MB, so have been setting things up. In the course of all this, I realized, what with checking settings, etc., that I can easily send mail from the new laptop, which is running whatever the latest OS is -- I think that's 15.5.5, but I have nearly constant difficulties with Mail on my desktop, which is running 15.5.2. I keep getting -- but not always -- messages saying mail can't be sent using the selected server; do I want to try another server or try later, or what. But on the laptop -- I don't get that at all.
I did a search on the Apple site and its recommendation? Upgrade the OS. Now, I can certainly do that, though I always hold my breath for fear something will go wrong and I'll break something that wasn't broken, so to speak.
Is anyone else having this issue? Did upgrading the OS stop it? I probably will have to, because I really do need the Mail program to work as it should. I'm getting ready to move to it from Entourage, but I can't if I can't send mail.

I suddenly started having the can't send mail problem yesterday, and I'm on 10.5.5, so upgrading the OS is not a fix. I followed all the directions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1307?viewlocale=en_US
and that did not work. But it might, if quitting is done at the right time....
I don't know what fixed it, and I'm not sure if it will remain fixed (last night I fixed it on my own, only to find when I started up this morning that it wasn't working again), but today I followed the advice from another discussion to delete the outgoing server (in prefs/accounts/outgoing pulldown menu) and make a new one... make sure to delete all mail that is pending (anything in outbox save as draft and delete)... and to quit. In other words - follow the instructions on the support page or some of the other discussions, but quit before trying to send again. The other thing I did was do a software upgrade - there was something for airport and a security fix that I installed. Whether it was doing just the right stuff in just the right order or if it was the software installs that moved things along, I can't say. By the looks of it, this seems to be a long time issue for Apple Mail, though I've been using it for years without issue.

  • Can't Send Mail Via HughesNet SMTP Server

After installing 10.5 I find that I can receive mail from my ISP (HughesNet) but I can't send mail through the smtp server. I've tried every setting possible and even duplicated the settings off my wife's 10.4.10 iMac and I still can't send mail. All I see is that the smtp service is "Offline."
Fortunately, I have a .Mac account so I can send mail using that smtp server. But I'd like to be abel to use my HughesNet server.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

My mom uses RoadRunner by Time Warner. She was able to receive email using Leopard and Mail but not send. SMTP server was the big problem like everyone else here experienced. We finally were able to get it to work using many ideas here. What we did:
    1) Delete com.apple.mail.plist from the User/Library/Preferences folder (BACK UP YOUR EMAIL FIRST)
    2) Open Mail and create a new account but disable the automatic set-up feature, put your info in manually.
    3) Uncheck " Use only this server" from the outgoing mail
    4) Under the Advanced tab on Mail Prefs "port set to 25", Uncheck "SSL" box, and uncheck "Use Authentication"
    5) Now hit Create
It took Mail about 20 minutes to contact the SMTP server, but it did and now I can send and receive Mail without any problems on her computer.
Bad Apple...stop criticizing MS and Vista when your own house is not in order yet. Hope this helps someone out there.....

  • Can't send mail with IMAP

    Hi,
I have two different IMAP accounts, and I can't send mail with either of them. I receive it just fine, but can't send. One of them just switched to ESMTP (I'm not entirely sure what that means), and said that many mail programs are not yet compatible with it. I know that both accounts can send, as I can send from them on the web.
I have tried switching from port 25 to port 587, with no luck. Regardless of what I do, the program displays a window saying, "Sending the message content to the server failed." I haven't been able to send for a little over a week now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Tonight I have been suddenly unable to send e-mail from my mac.com address.
The problem is the same whether I try to send from my G4 laptop running OS 10.4, or my eMac running OS 10.3.9 , or from .mac web mail.
The alert I am receiving says: "The sender address [email protected] was rejected by the server."
I am using the SMTP outgoing mail server, not POP.
I can still receive e-mail with no difficulty.
    I have changed no settings.
    What's up?

  • Can't send mail since 10.4.6 update

Since updating my OS to 10.4.6 I can't send mail. I can receive mail and I can browse online. But mail will not go out. I've verified all the Outgoing Mail Server info SEVERAL times and have had no luck. I've enabled Entourage to handle mail instead of MacMail and it won't work either. Totally stumped.
Same thing has happened on my iBook G4 laptop by the way. I'm convinced that the update has something to do with this.

    INTERNET CONNECTION LOST
so... since the 10.4.6 update once my computers fall asleep the connection to my wireless router is lost. (mail seems to be working ok, when i have an internet connection...)
I have tried multiple things to fix this. Thus far the only solution seems to be resetting the router to use connect back to the internet. Once this is done the internet connection works fine, until lost or the computers go to sleep. When i wake the computer i have to do it all over again... and on top of it the post link is missing on all the pages!!! so i am replying here.
So this time I have rebooted to my external drive with the previous version (10.4.5) to see if indeed it is the 10.4.6 update that seems to have hosed this connection somehow.
HELP please, this is terrible annoying. Is anyone else experiencing this?
    thank you.

  • Can't send mail on iOS 5 devices with iCloud

A long time ago I signed up for a .Mac trial to use that address with iChat. The trial expired, and, as expected, the address continued to work with iChat, though it no longer functioned as an email address. It then came to be my Apple ID. Now, having set that Apple ID up for use with iCloud, my iOS devicess are having trouble sending, and only sending email from my iCloud address. The reason is this: I logged into <username>@mac.com for iCloud (as that's my Apple ID), and everything set up right except the mail address that iOS Mail thinks I have. It thinks the mail address for the iCloud account is <username>@mac.com. When I send mail to <username>@me.com, my iOS devices get it just fine, but when I try to send mail back, it tries to send it from the @mac.com address, and therefore fails as that is not a valid email address.
I've tried to go into the settings and change the email address that it uses for iCLoud, but with no luck. I see a place to change it, but it is grayed out and won't let me select it and bring up a keyboard to change it.
Is there any way to tell it that it assumed the wrong email address for my iCloud? Or is there no way to send iCloud email from my iOS devices?
    Thanks in advance!
P.S. I can send mail via iCloud from the web app and from Apple Mail (OS X Lion), but not from iOS devices because of this glitch. I can also send mail from iOS devices using other email accounts (Gmail, Yahoo).

I found a work around that works.   Got to Settings...Icloud....account......advanced....outgoing mail server.....
    Add an "other" server.
    Host Name p01-smtp.mail.me.com
Put in your me.com email address as username and your Apple ID password
    SSL is on
    Authentication is password
    Server port 587
This worked for me.....I will use this until the bug is fixed.  (you may need to use p02, p03 etc)   Don't make this server your primary.   Leave it in "on" status in the other category.
    Good luck

  • Can't send mail... after 4 months of using it

I'm stumped... help me out please.
When i send a mail out, this message pops up, "Error : This Message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered. Sending the message content to the server failed."
So it's still in my mailbox. But then, it shows up in my gmail account and on my blackberry as a sent mail, but the receiver never gets it. Also, i can still send mail from both my blackberry and gmail.com... just not from Apple Mail.
    What's going on?

Sometimes an ISP provider blocks one of your incoming
Mail ports and "won't notify you". ( Why? probably it's their protection software )
In my case Comcast blocked my Port 25 and my Outgoing kept bouncing.
    Incoming was fine.
Make sure when you change your Port to 587,
You also check "ON" the Secure Sockets Layer box right underneath,
    Then change Authentication: to Password
Then enter your name and password
    and click OK.
The reps at most of the providers
are useless and won't tell you
the second part of the solution.
It took me 2 days and 4 reps
at Comcast to find this out
and 10 hours of trying to
    clean my Mac...
    which they will always
    blame.
    Best of Luck, Tom
