You have a couple of options:
Open the photos one at a time and take a screenshot. This will add a new low resolution copy of the photo to the camera roll, which will then upload to your photo stream;
Email the photos one at a time to yourself, then save the attached photos to your camera roll. This will add a copy of the photo at full resolution to your camera roll and upload to photo stream;
Use an app like PhotoSync, which will allow you to wirelessly transfer copies of all your old photos to your computer all at once. Then delete these photos from your camera roll and use PhotoSync to transfer them back from your computer to your camera roll. These will be the original resolution and will upload to your photo stream. (You need an app like this because iTunes will not transfer photos back to your camera roll, where they must be in order to add to your photo stream.)

Yes, you need to buy the Camera Connection Kit from Apple. It has two dongles that plug into the iPad, an SD card reader and a USB that you can connect your camera to. (This USB port is for cameras, and I believe, for keyboards - not for attaching other devices to, like a hard drive.)

There is nothing wrong with Photostream. The "problem" is likely in the way you are using it.
In order for photos to be moved into Photostream, two things must happen. (1) you have to be connected to Wifi, and (2) you have to exit the Camera app. Unless both of those things happen, the photos will not be transferred to Photostream.
So, shut down your camera app, and connect to Wifi. Wait a while, and the photos you took with your iPhone should be transferred.

Which iPhoto version did you update to?
If it is iPhoto 9.6 open iPhoto's preferences, go to the Accounts pane and delete the email account.
Now quit iPhoto, relaunch, and add the account back.
You may have to restart the Mac for this to have effect.
If you are using iPhoto as Mail client, you may want to switch to Mail as the email client in iPhoto's General preference pane.
This has been much more reliable in the past and less trouble.

Albums/photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync process cannot be added to the Camera Roll, and the sync process for these photos is a one way transfer process only. These photos should remain on your computer and be included with your computer's backup.
Photos in the Camera Roll added to user created albums are not duplicated photos on the albums. The photos are stored in the Camera Roll with a pointer to the original photos only in the user created albums. You import photos/videos the in the Camera Roll only with your computer as with any other digital camera.

You can't, when you 'copy' a photo into an album that you've created directly on the iPad then you are effectively just creating a pointer to the photo and not creating a second copy of it - so if you then delete the original photo from your iPad you will also be deleting all pointers to it and therefore removing it from other albums.

Photos missing from Camera Roll but but not from Whatsapp

This is some weird situation here. I got my new iphone (6). Old one was 4s. I backuped to my computer, then restored from backup for new iphone. But last 10-12 photos are missing from camera roll but when i try to send a photo to one of my whatsapp contacts i can see those photos there. Dont know what to do to bring them back. Help please

I also have the same problem. I upgraded a 3G to 4 iOS and lost one of 2 camera rolls. I've searched for the answers too and got next to nothing! I searched apple's support website using the iPhone as the device and used the key words: "iphone upgrade 4 lost photos" and got information on a mac laptop! I got more info by Googling the same key words but still no fix. So I called apple and after a few meager attempts I was told "Sorry they are lost". I asked about a fix coming out and was told they "are still examining the problem, to see if anything can even be done about it." Maybe it’s my fault for thinking any man made device could be dependable... I would give up my iPhone now and forever to retrieve those photos. Im gunna be straight up honest here.. I have some rude pictures of my girlfriend on my iphone which I would like to keep for my own personal viewing but obviously dont want family and friends seeing when they are flicking threw my camera album which often happens. I had intended to make a private album put them all in there and put a passcode on the album. With all of apples features I would of thought this would be a standard thing you could do, however when I made the private album the pictures were still in my camera roll and if I try to delete them I am told the pictures will be removed completly from my phone.. This is stupid. What is the point in being able to make albums if the pictures are going to still all be in the camera roll!? Does anybody know of a way I can move pictures from camera roll to a private album?? Any help would be much appreciated.

Photos placed in a user created album or in an existing album are not copied/duplicated. The photos placed in an album include a pointer to the original photos stored in the Camera Roll. Having an album for select photos is for viewing the select photos only without having to see all photos in the Camera Roll.
The same applies to albums transferred from your computer. All photos transferred from your computer are stored in the Photo Library. Photos on the albums below include a pointer to the original photos stored in the Photo Library. The photos appear as they are duplicated when they are not. This way you can view the photos in an album only by selecting the album, or all photos on the Photo Library or Camera Roll by selecting it.

What is the best way to delete photos selectively from camera roll.

I have thousands of photos on my camera roll. I do know you can select individual photos to delete off the roll and you can select more than one at a time but is there a better way? I keep hoping there would be a way to select groups of photos from my camera roll while my phone is connected to my macbook pro through iphoto. I was told you are only able to delete photos on your phone via your phone basically one at a time.

I import the photos from my iphone onto my macbook pro but I like having many of them on my phone to share at will etc.. I'm not sure how image capture will help me to delete many photos at one time quickly off my phone as opposed to the only way I know which is to select each photo, selecting as many as I like on the phone itself and deleting. It just seems one could do this via the macbook pro with the phone attached much easier.

I was wondering is it possible to transfer photos direct from my camera to my itouch? I am able to do this on my ipod using an ipod camera connector but it doesn't seem to work using my itouch.
Any suggestions?

Move photo's from camera roll to photo stream

I am confused. I have a number of photo's in Camera Roll. They apparantly do not back up to iCloud as part of Photo Stream. Is there a way to move them from Camera Roll to Photo Stream so they will be available to my other devices, or do I have to manually copy them to my desktop to make them available? If the latter, what is the best process for this?

I have images/videos which I saved from Messages. Even with Photo Stream enabled, it does not appear possible to move anything from Camera Roll. Once there, it appears to be stuck there.

Two problems with that are that the images are not captured at their original resolution. Also, this does absolutely no good for videos which are saved from Messsages.
