Can't set media kind to movie

I imported a video in to iTunes, and it came in as a movie. It's an educational video, so I thought it would be nice to set its media type to iTunes U. I did that, then clicked iTunes U in my left hand pane, and the video did not appear. I created a smart playlist where media kind = iTunes U, and there it was. So I figured I'd change it to Podcast. I changed it, and it didn't show up under Podcasts, (but again does appear under smart playlist). So I figured I'd change the media kind back to Movie, but now that media kind is no longer available from the dropdown list! My only choices are Music, Podcast, iTunes U, Audiobook, Voice Memo.
How can I change the media kind to movie so it appears in my movies?

Was the "Movie" option missing after you had changed it from "iTunes U" to "Podcast"?  I found it missing after originally changing the media kind to "iTunes U", but after changing it again to "Podcast", the "Movie" option became available again.

  • HT1473 Can't set media kind to podcast since iTunes 11 upgrade

I have some teaching material in mp3 format that I like to listen to on my iPhone.  Prior to iTunes 11 upgrade, I could import it into iTunes, get info, options tab, then set the Media Kind to Podcast.  This moved it from the music library into the podcast library, which allowed me to take advantage of 30 second rewind while listening, as well as remembering where I was when I left off if I didn't listen to the entire thing in one setting.
Now that I've upgraded to iTunes 11, this no longer works.  I can still select Podcast as Media Kind, but the files stay in the music library and when I do another get info on them, they are still listed as Media Kind of music.
Does anyone know of a work-around for this?
    Thanks.

I've got the same problem. Here is a temporary workaround in windows:
    install mp3tag v2.53, a free tag editor {Google it}
select mp3 file to set as a podcast
right click file, select extended tabs
    select starpage icon
create these fields and values :
    field: COMMENT ITUNPGAP
    value: 0
    field: PODCAST
    value: 1
    field: PODCASTDESC
value: any value, Example ; The Saint

  • ITunes 11: setting Media Kind to podcast, but keeping files separated by album?

I'm having a weird issue in iTunes 11. I have a bunch of audio lectures that I want iTunes to treat as podcasts, so that I can listen to them through the Podcasts app on my iPhone 5. I prefer the interface of the Podcasts app over the Music app for lecture listening, especially with the feature of playback continuing where it left off, so this is important to me.
Setting Media Kind in iTunes to podcast works fine for the first 'album' that I try, but as soon as I do it to files from a second album, the Podcasts app on my iPhone merges them into the first 'album' / podcast. iTunes on my Mac does keep the new podcasts separate, but as soon as I sync them with my iPhone, the Podcasts app just adds all of the rest of the files I've sync'd in with the first album that I added.
These lectures all came from the same publisher (FYI I legally own them), but I've removed all metadata related to the publisher that I can see in iTunes. There's nothing as far as I can tell that is telling iTunes to group them together, but it keeps on doing it anyway.
Is this a bug, or "working as intended"? Is there a work-around, or maybe something I've overlooked? Thanks!

This no longer works:  iOS 7 removes this escape route.
You now must use Apple's specific Podcasts app for podcasts – which, of course, still hasn't fixed the original issue (of lumping everything together).  If you try to use Apple's Music app like before, the Podcasts are hidden from view for iOS 7.
As DogDutyAscetic said above:  it's best to just completely switch to Downcast (or other 3rd party) if you make your own podcasts.  Apple has bigger fish to fry than the podcast community, and understandably so as the biggest company in the world.  Rather than fix this issue over the last 12 months, they've instead shut off their working alternative.  A pity, but the writing was on the wall.

  • How to use iTunes COM SDK to set Media Kind for tracks

There is no obvious function to set Media Kind of a track from iTunes COM SDK. Just curious if anyone knows how to do it programmatically?

AFAICT there isn't a way to do it via the COM SDK. I currently do it by simulating window events using AutoIT.

  • Can't edit Media Kind in iTunes 9?

After updating to iTunes 9 I have found that I can't edit the "media kind" label on any of my tracks. This is particularly annoying as I use audiobooks a lot, and now I have to store them as music. In fact, it seems that I can't edit anything under Options at all, such as "skip when shuffling" etc. Any ideas? I have never had a problem with this before and any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Just a couple of general points that may help in future.
Unless a file has the Podcast flag set, audio files imported into iTunes will be treated as Music (apart from m4b audiobooks) and video files as Movies. You need to manually change the Media Kind after import.
As well as "Media Kind" there is another property inside iTunes called "Video Kind" which indicates if a file is a Movie, TV Show or Music Video. Current builds of iTunes *do not* alter this value in tandem with a change in Media Kind. This could potentially cause problems with smart playlists and perhaps even remote access to the library. The Video Kind property can be set from script.
Given that Media Kind is an internal property of the iTunes database there is no good reason that it can't be applied to any file whether locked or not, but I suspect iTunes first checks for write permissions before making changes so permissions may be an issue whenever you are unable to change the Media Kind.
Unless your selected audiobook files are all in .m4b format iTunes will report any selection of two or more audiobook files as being Music. Ignore it. It can't handle mixed property values either, e.g. a mix of compilation and non-compilation tracks will always show as *Part of a compilation: No.*
When working with single audiobook files you cannot change the status of the *Remember playback position* and *Skip when shuffling* flags. Simply select more than one file to adjust.

  • Can't set media type to music

I was moving some audiobooks that were incorrectly categorized as music, and accidentally labeled a bunch of music as audiobooks, as well.
To my horror, I find that I cannot reset entire albums from audiobook back to music.  Experimentation shows that I can set a single song back from audiobook to music, but if I select either an album, or multiple tracks (open the album, select all), then I can change the media type, but when I apply the change in the Get Info window and close, the change in media type does not stick.
I have seen a bunch of related questions, where the answer was "turn off iTunes match," but I do not use iTunes match, so that is not the solution to my problem.
Is there any other way, or must I change each track individually?  If so, ouch, it's not nice to have a batch change that can only be undone one at a time.

Was the "Movie" option missing after you had changed it from "iTunes U" to "Podcast"?  I found it missing after originally changing the media kind to "iTunes U", but after changing it again to "Podcast", the "Movie" option became available again.

  • Cannot set Media Kind to Audiobook.  Defaults back to Music

Can anybody offer input on why MP3s cannot have the "Media Kind" set to Audiobook in iOS5.  The setting will default back to music automatically.
This was not the case with iOS4...

Right click on the video and select "Get Info" and click on the "Options" tab scroll down to "Media Kind" and select "TV Show" to "Music Video."
    Best of luck!

  • What does setting Media Kind to Audiobook do?

Yes, I know it causes the file to show as a Book and not Music, but what does it really do to the file? The real question is: What constitutes an Audiobook to iTunes. If the file's file type and extension are M4B or it is from Audible with extension aa, iTunes says it's an Audiobook. But setting the Media Kind to Audiobook does something else. What does it do?
Thanks for any info on this.

  • Can't change Media Kind

I've downloaded some audiobooks from a library. They end up in iTunes as "songs". When I go to "Get Info" and select "Options", the "Media Kind" is locked as a "song" and I can't change it. Any suggestions?

this initially worked for me, but after I had turned on match again a few minutes later the file got moved back to music with the metadata it had been matched with and was no longer in my audio books where it was just before turning on match again.
I've tried it twice, waiting longer the second time before turning match on, but it failed both times.

  • Can I set a rule to move outgoing messages?

    Hi all
Mail rules (Tiger) seem to only apply to incoming mail automatically. I want the mail in the Sent folder for a POP account to automatically move to a folder that belongs to an IMAP account (.mac), so I have access to those messages on all my computers. I know I can manually move the messages, and that you can manually apply a rule to selected messages, but I want it to happen whenever a message is sent from that account. Have I overlooked something obvious?
I suppose I could send everything from my .mac account and use the Reply-To field, but I'd have to choose that on a message-by-message basis. Too much mousing.
    Thanks for any ideas.

    Hi,
We are now on version 3.0 of the Mail application... I am using Leopard and have just checked out Mail.
I too want to be able to set a rule to move outgoing messages to the Mailbox of my preference.
We can do it in Entourage. We can do it in Eudora. Why, oh why, can't we do it in Mail? This is the reason I cannot switch to Mail. Why would anybody want to keep thousands of unorganized messages in the Sent Mailbox?
Or am I missing some hidden function of Mail that does something similar to this?
Anyone with experience using Mail have a suggestion?

  • 10.5.2 iTunes/ Mac - can't change media kind

In 10.5.2 with iTunes Match enabled, I can no longer change the media kind on some files in my Music library that are chapters of audio books I've ripped. The files are marked as Music erroneously; I highlight them, right click "Get Info", then navigate to the "Options" tab, but find that "Media Kind" is grayed out, so I can't change their type to audio books.
As iTunes Match is so slow uploading files, I don't want these large numbers of audio book files to be uploaded, hence why I want to change their "Media Kind" property.
I can neither drag the highlighted files from the Music library folder to the Books folder.
    Any ideas please?

So, just to summarise, if you:
have iTunes Match turned on; and
    import a CD; and
do not quickly change the Media Type before iTunes starts trying to match your song,
you will not be able to change the Media Type later.
    The solution is:
    turn off iTunes Match and reimport the song;
leave iTunes Match on, reimport the song and very, very quickly change the Media Type before iTunes starts trying to match your song.
    This is pretty terrible usability.

  • Can't set Poster Frame for Movies on site

Hi - Any insight into this problem is much appreciated - I've built a simple site, a few pages have 2 or 3 compressed MPEG-4 movie files on the page (they are roughly 30MB each clip). I built the clips in FCP then exported them using Compressor and saved them as MPEG-4 files. I then dragged the files onto blank pages and built the site that way. I have set the Poster Frames for these clips in iWeb08, but after I publish the site the Poster Frames only save on a few files, most do not. Also, some of the clips stop playing mid-way through. Any simple fixes for this/these problem(s)? Thanks.

Part of your "monicker" best describes the issue.
You can edit your published pages using hundreds of tools but the are best edited with a plain text editing app like BBEdit (any plain text editor works).
You can use Safari to view your page and even "save" the source code (Command-Option-U) and then "save as". Edit this new page to make your changes and drag it back into the appropriate Web older of your iDisk (replacing the older version).
I did it to one of my pages to add a sound file to one of my slideshow pages:

  • Can't find mp4 file after changing media kind setting to podcast

I recently imported some home videos into iTunes.  The default "media kind" is movies so I changed to podcast b/c I didn't want to mix home videos with movies when surfing through lists on my Apple TV.  After chaning the media kind setting now I can't find the file in iTunes.  Any idea on how I can update the media kind info so I can see the file again in iTunes on my Windows PC?

maybe the features of the usb port is controlled by the routers setup page most routers have some ip address you type into a browser and login to the router to set them up try that
because some routers have usb for external hd some for printers some only for firmware updates (like the Apple TV (which of cause are not routers but have usb connector for the sole purpose of upgrading a crashed firmware))

  • RE: Disappearing data upon "media kind" change

I have some videos that when converted to podcast have disappeared in itunes but show up in appletv.  How can I show and get rid of them or reindex to get rid of them?  (This seems to be the case in both my mac book and windows machine)

    Thanks, Wozza!
I ran into the same problem when I imported some MP4s then changed their Kind to Podcast while leaving the Album field blank.  It created an "Unknown Podcast" folder containing the MP4 files in my iTunes Media Library, but I couldn't find the assets in iTunes under any category.  I deleted the MP4 files and the "Unknown Podcast" folder without deleting them through iTunes since I couldn't find them.
When I added the Smart Playlist with Media Kind set to "Podcast", I noticed the assets that were created in the past.  The problem now is I couldn't delete them, so now the assets were going to exist forever without any file to link to.  They remained with a "!".
To fix this, I dragged the same files in.  I changed their status to Podcast with the Album field blank, then I re-linked them from Smart Playlist.  From there, I changed their Album data to a temporary name as well as changed their Media Kind to Movie, so they would be removed from the Smart Playlist.  From the Movie category, I deleted them, and they are gone for good!  They don't appear in any Smart Playlist marked with Media Kind as Podcast or Movie.
Thanks for sharing the Smart Playlist trick because this helped me resolve my dead-end asset issue.

  • ITunes 9.2 Media kind

After I upgraded itunes to 9.2, All my music videos went from Media kind (Music videos) to just (Music).
Now my iPhones after syncing only plays the music not the videos, now when I select a single music video and go to info I can only select media kind, Music, Podcast, iTunes U, AudioBook, or Voice memo,
But not Music Video, or TV Show, Or Movies Like before. If I select all the Music Videos and go to info only then I can select Music Videos, but I when I select the Music Videos Option it just wont work, or do the changes.
After the Upgrade the iTunes Music Videos Playlist Is Empty.
    Please Help

try if this script can help:
_*Set Video Kind of Selected v3.1*_
+This script will change the video kind property of the selected tracks to your choice of "Movie", "Music Video" or "TV Show". Additionally, "Show Name", "Season Number", and "Episode Number" can also be set or cleared for each selected track.

Protected files, such as those purchased from the iTunes Store, cannot be changed. Requires iTunes 7 or better.+
