Can't set Transition times. iMove does it's own thing random times.

When I try to enter a transition time between clips it may actually change but not to what I had entered. If it changes at all, it tends to be to a random number.  I have the preferances set at 3:00  but even this does nothing, the default remains at 0:05 which is vertually no transition.
Can anyone enlighten me?     What am I doing wrong ?    Has any else had this problem ?

I am interested in knowing where or how you acquired such information.  It is a source I obviously need to investigate myself. There must be more unknown hidden gems lerking in there.
oral tradition.
When I started participating here, Karl Petersen was the undisputed iM Mastermind. He knew everything about iM; I never figured out, but I suspect, he was in contact with Randy U's team at Cupertino.
Somehow, we lost him here. I'm not the 'community'-guy, rumors has it, he passed away (not only here).
Second source was/is Daniel Slagle's Unofficial FAQ ... he doesn't maintain it anymore, since the rise of iMovie-b.
Taking a look behind the odds of iM was Lennart Thelander's website (wow, really old school hand-coded!), which listed bugs and gave help for iM-a. Lennart didn't switch to iM-b yet, now avail for about four years - too new for Lennart, too fast development ... so, no news from there.
For sure, David Pogue's Missing Manuals books have to be mentioned ...
In all modesty, I'd like to mention my own websites ... me no engineer, diff. attitude here: Daddy (=me) likes movies and especially special-effects - so, how to accomplish magic with a 12$ app? or, how to modify iDVD to my needs?
We 'combined forces' in the iMovie Output Project when the discussions about interlaced got boring.-
With iM-b coming up, Aaron's Unlocking iMovie is another source for 'tricks' (I'm jealous about his professional design …)
And finally, a while ago I was highly irritated, that FinalCut Pro Mastermind Tom Wolsky joined the 'amateurs party' here, he's a FC/p sensei, usually participating in the pro forums ... that was before iMovie-on-steroids (=FCPX) appeared ... now, I know why   he actually published a worth reading book about transition from iM to FCPX
... the rest is ... experience, interest, curiosity, and hours of reading any source, from wikipedia to fcp.co ...

  • On my Macbook Pro my cursor jumps around and does it's own thing even with a usb mouse, on my Macbook Pro my cursor jumps around and does it's own thing even with a usb mouse

Having trouble with my MacBook Pro and the cursor jumping around and doing it's own thing.  Clicking opening up other folders etc.

There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps until it's resolved.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article.
    2. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
    3. Reset the System Management Controller.
    4. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    5. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced.
    6. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    7. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    8. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    9. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • 3GS crashes every time it rings, and also at other random times

Hi - my 3GS is running OS4.2.1 and has recently started crashing whenever anyone calls me (which is useful in a phone), and also without warning at other random times.
It's like it dies - the screen fades out and I have to switch back on with the power button. If I'm near a speaker I can hear the signal interference still going on, but the phone is unresponsive and needs rebooting.
I had a macbook pro that used to do this as well - just turn itself off randomly, which was really infuriating. I hope it's not in-built apple trickery to try to get me to shell out more cash after a set period of time (had the phone a couple of years, had the mbp a couple of years)...
Any assistance much appreciated - I don't really want to restore the phone and wipe everything, but I'm bracing myself for that advice.
    Thanks,
    Paul

First, replace your sim. Your carrier/provider should give you a new one for free. If no change, try restoring your phone from your most recent backup. Follow this with syncing your iTunes content back to your phone. You won't lose any data or settings. While this will restore a fresh copy of the OS, if your problem is being caused by corrupt data on your phone, this will merely restore the problem. If no change after doing this, the next step is to restore as a "new" device in iTunes, again followed by syncing your content back to your phone. All saved data on your phone will be erased. If no change after restoring as a new device, your phone most likely has a hardware issue. If under warranty, make an appointment at an Apple store. If out of warranty, Apple has an out of warranty replacement program. Cost in the US is $199.

  • Trackpad doing it's own thing after upgrade

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro which I updated to Lion yesterday. A few hours after the update my trackpad began dragging, right clicking, jumping, doing gestures when I was just moving the cursor around, using one finger.
Closing the lid, restarting the computer or doing the P+R-thing during startup temporarily makes things normal again, which is why I think it's a software problem. Any ideas how to fix this?
NOTE: I can use a USB-mouse without any problems, it's only the trackpad acting up.

have u had any response? i'm getting the same thing !

  • How can I set the finder window to open the same way every time?

Everytime I open Finder it goes back to it's default view which is just too small, but I want to set the finder columns and window so that they open the same exact way every single time. I'm tired of resizing everything.
Currently I have to resize every window and column everytime and I think my work is much slower then when I was on Windows because of it.
Is there a setting, script, file, patch, anything, is there absolutely anything I can do to actually control the Finder views and make them adjust to MY criteria and stay that way...

That is a big negative. That does absolutely nothing other then close my window, next time the finder window is opened then the column widths are small again.
In Windows Explorer all your windows are customizable, how do I do this with Finder?

  • How can I set up a Macbook to wake up at a certain time for backing up?

My wife objects strenuously to Time Capsule (wireless) backups so I finally set it to once a day, starting at 7 pm. You would think that would work but NO, runs too long and even next morning to finish. We are backing up only documents, mail, safari, etc. — no Apps.
We also back up online to BackJack once a day.
So I am thinking what may be a solution is to have it run at night, when she is asleep and the only time she is not using it.
But how do I wake it up at the designated time? If we leave the lid up will just start when something is scheduled like Time Machine or Backjack? Or do I need additional software?
    Thanks,
    Richard

Basically, for my wife's settings, we exclude iTunes, movies, Apps but do back up Mail, Safari, Docs, Prefs. I have watched it and it does indeed run a long time.
Then something is broken. Backups are only useful when done from a known good system. Then, if that system dies, is stolen, etc. you can restore from your backups. You are backing up a known bad system. If and when you need to restore (and you may, considering something is wrong), you may find your backed up data to be garbage. It is worth investigating why those backups are taking so long. You shouldn't have to exclude anything. You shouldn't be able to generate enough hourly changes to cause the backup to be so slow as to interfere with normal operation.
Two things that could be improved are the memory on the Macbook and the available disk space on the Time Capsule. You are low on both. However, I suspect the problem is elsewhere. You might want to review her log files during a backup to see if there are any error messages.
As for using BackJack, she is an artist and has about 40 GB of photos on her drive that if lost, might be the end of our relationship.
Then those files need to be archived, not backed up, to one or more devices. They should probably also be verified. I have seen people dutifully run backups for months, never realizing they were backing up junk and overwriting the previous, valid backups. I discovered that only when called in to do a system restore from backup.
Time Machine too slow, too small a capacity. I ran Mozy for a while but really slow and CPU consuming. BJ is reasonably fast, does incremental backups, does tie up CPU nearly as much.
I think you have jumped to some invalid conclusions based on some other, underlying issue. When your system if functioning properly, Time Machine should make anything else look like a joke. Your system is sickly, and backing that up isn't doing you any favors.
My advice is to shut down all backups, perform an archive backup, and verify that the archived data is valid. This might be an excellent occasion to use a cloning tool such as Carbon Copy Cloner. Then investigate why your backups are so slow. I suggest buying a new hard drive anyway for that 40 GB of critical data. May as well get an additional hard drive for the Time Capsule and some more RAM. Then re-partition that machine and reinstall the OS, perhaps onto yet another new drive. That is probably the quickest, easiest, and cheapest way to get your systems back up to speed and running well for the long term.

  • How can I set iTunes to check for new podcasts at a specific time of day?

    Hi guys,
Anybody know a work around for this? I thought it was just a matter of clicking the refresh button at the time I want iTunes to look for new podcasts, but it doesn't seem to be the case...
I want iTunes to look for new podcasts at 2 am every day. So, at 2 am, I clicked the refresh button in the Podcasts section in iTunes. It would then say, in the settings, that iTunes last checked for podcasts at 2 am and will look again at 2 am the next day. Awesome, not. Every single time I try this, iTunes always resets itself and decides to look for podcasts at 2:49 pm. I can't work it out.
So, if anyone has a solution, I would love to hear it! I'm on the latest version. 9.0.2. Thanks for reading.
    Regards,
    Daniel

I'm looking for the solution to this issue too. Once or twice, a full system restart has seemed to solve the problem temporarily but it slips back to an afternoon refresh after a few days.
Seems like it would be simple for Apple to allow us to specify a time of day for refreshes in the preferences section.

  • Can i set a pdf document to print back to back every time?

have had a look through the help menus but no luck, just wondered if i could change the print settings so that when people open the document it automatically prints back to back every time? thanks in advance.

    No.
If you could, what would you expect to happen when someone without a duplex printer prints it?

  • Can i set the ipod touch to ask for a password every time i enter itunes to download music/games etc

thanks in advance for any advice

Just scroll to the bottom of a screen in iTunes and log out of your iTunes account. She will be asked for your iTunes username and password if she tries to get anything--free or paid.

No, there is no app that can do this (Without Jailbreaking), because it would require integration into iOS.

  • Hey i can connect to the internet and use the wifi but at random times it just disconnects to it leaving me using my data sometimes w/o knowledge cause of watching youtube does anyone else have this issue if or have any recomendations on how to fix it?

it hasnt happened before the update just would like for it to stop

    HI again Andy,
The last message had some more stuff in between the "Hello" and "Regards" - I have no idea what happened to it. But nevermind...
I started up the Mini with the modem in one usb, and the speaker system in the other (M-Audio Sonica Theatre) - I have one of the Minis that have only 2 USB (and one FireWire) ports. The firewire has the external drive connected to it.
So far, as I"m typing this, I AM able to be online and use iTunes simultaneously. (both SaFari and iTunes respond slower than if I was using only one or the other, but they ARE actually working - in addition to having Adium running) - So I think what you suggested ( that is was something wonky was the USB hub) was a correct, yet assessment.
Would you have any reccommendations for USB hubs? The only thing that I have connected to the hub under normal circumstances that would be constantly "running" would be the RadioShark (even though the Radio soft isn't playing - the blue light on the RadioShark is always on) - and the speakers naturally. Everything else is of the occassional variety - iPod Sync Cable, Dual Layer External DVD Burner, and a "pass thu" to the USB ports on my Hard Drive Enclosure (which had been unplugged before the problem was noticed). The hub I current use is the
    Kensington DomeHub USB 2.0 (7 ports) Weighted Hub 33118 http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-DomeHub-ports-Weighted-33118/dp/B0002FHENE/ref= sr16/002-4275642-8664817?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1187848108&sr=8-6
which (I thought) worked better than the "throwaway" ones I had used previously.
You think it is the hub or something connected to it that may be causing the problem?
Regardless, thank you for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon.

  • Can I set the computer up to install updates at a specific time?

We have several apple computers and need to use internet quota in the moet economical way. Downloads would be best installed between 2am and 8am.

Interesting thought, but would there not be too many unknown factors like network errors timing out downloads?   There again, some updates may not be required or suitable so a catch all instruction would then be inappropriate.

  • Time Machine does not see older backups on Time Capsule

I use a wifi network to connect to the internet as well as a USB modem.  The result is that my Time Capsule is not always connected.
I set up my Time Capsule (using the wifi network) and ran what I believe was a successful backup.
Now Im trying to run another backup and I have my iMac connected using the wifi network.
When I open Time Machine it show an icon on my desktop saying "Time Machine Backups"  Inside this is lots of folders that appears to be some form of backup.
If I then click on "Select Disk" it give me the Time Capsule as a option to select. Once this is done it says 1.76TB of 2TB available.
Below that it says Oldest backup: None AND Latest Backup: None.  Below that is the white and blue backing up bar that has been running for some time with "preparing backup..."
I have the Time Capsule connected to the iMac with a LAN cable...thinking that this will speed up the process?

    vlakvarkie wrote:

Once you're disconnected from the backups, those fields won't be shown until the next backup completes successfully.  (Prior to Lion, it showed a couple of dashes -- instead of None.  We've asked for either the dashes back or something like "unknown" or "not available," but so far they haven't changed it.)
Below that is the white and blue backing up bar that has been running for some time with "preparing backup..."
That can take quite a while, especially if it's been a while since the last one.  See #D1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Yes, by all means.  It should be 2-3 times faster, and much more reliable, than WIFI.
