Can't setup Device Management

I've just installed Server 2.2.1 on a Mac Mini that also runs a few other services for me.  For that reason, I don't want to format and start clean.
I'm trying to get the Server up and running, but I'm having trouble getting Profile Managerment in place-- in particular it seems to have trouble with enabling device management.
I'd swear there used to be an obvious place to create self signed certificates, but that seems to have moved.  The certificates pane lets me create trusted cert requests.  I suspect I'd get what I want by showing all certs, and then selecting "add identity certificate".  I chose instead to let Profile Manager create it's own certificate.
When I enable Profile Manager it takes me through the intial steps to start up Open Directory.  It appears to create a self signed certificate during this part of the initialization.
Later when it asks me to choose a certificate for device management, it lets me choose the self signed domain.private cert and click next, next goes gray, I get a spinny thing in the bottom left corner of the sheet, and then next goes blue again and it acts as though nothing happened.  I can't dismiss the sheet, and there is no way to proceed past this point.  When I click back, and then cancel, I see that Open Directory was enabled, and the certificate was created.
From this point, it seems to allow me to enable Profile Manager with the Big Switch, but I can't do anything to enable Device Management.  I click configure, choose the self signed cert, see the warning that devices are going to have to trust this cert, but the Next button refuses to dismiss the sheet.
In the process of getting to this point, I'd enabled and disabled a few services, created and destroyed a few OD masters, and some users.  I don't know if there's something stuck in a bad state-- that seems to happen pretty often with Server.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong here?  Is there any way to wipe just Server clean and start again without wiping the entire machine?

Same here. Any resolution? Device manager used to work fine.

After running bootcamp, DVD drive is detected by Windows 8. But after installing drivers, no longer can detect. Device Manager shows that DVD drive is unplugged! Drivers in Bootcamp “removed” the DVD drive. I think there is an issue because I reinstalled Windows 8. If I don't install driver, then I have reduced functionality (no Apple keyboard, no sound etc), but once I install driver, I lose my DVD drive.

Hi, guys, I have had the exact same problem since the summer of 2010. Here's what I was able to find out.
Deleting upper/lower filters, running all those Fix Ya programs and other Microsoft crap is useless. This problem is most certainly has nothing to do with registry of any software on your computer. I took my HP 9620us to a couple of repair places and, they tried a lot of things and it appears that the root of this problem is a faulty motherboard connection. Of course, it costs about 400 bucks to fix it so I'm not sure I want to pay this kind of money.
Anyway, if somebody was able to fix it PLEASE post here to let us know. Again I am 99 per cent sure it's some piece of hardware in the motherboard.

  • Can't enable Device Manager after upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite

We have an Apple Mac Mini Server that was purchased and configured with OS X 10.9. This was configured as part of a golden triangle, managing 10 Apple Mac Minis in a Microsoft Active Directory environment. We had enabled Profile Manager and configured Device Manager.
We recently upgraded to Yosemite, and upgraded Server.app to 4.0.3. Device Manager is now disabled, can when we try and configure it, we get 'An error with code -1 occurred'. We have tried resetting the Device Manager configuration, but this hasn't fixed the issue.
    Any suggestions?

  • Can't Enable Device Management

I am getting the dreaded  'An error with code -1 occurred' when trying to enable device management on 2 different XSAN deployments.  This is an secondary XSAN metadata controller.  The primary metadata controller starts up Device Management fine.  This is in the logs of the faulty system:
    1:: [17200] [2015/04/26 12:23:02.166] EXCEPTION:  Error <-[SCEPHelper odRootCertificate] (/SourceCache/RemoteDeviceManagement/RemoteDeviceManagement-886.204/Compiled/Fr amework-Base/Support/SCEPHelper.m:61): "'((SCEPHELPER_GetODRootCertificate(self.connection, &root, &rootCnt)))' error 1">

    Any thoughts?  Thanks!
    Michael

Sure.  Thanks for the reply and apologies on the slow response.  Again, from what I can tell,
The environment is an XSAN deployment, so servers are on Yosemite 10.10.3, running Server 4.1.  DNS, OD and XSAN are running well on both.  Other services on this machine include Calendar, Messages and File Sharing, but all other services were set up after the failure of Profile Manager.
Basically I cannot enable device management for Profile Manager.  Didn't work initially, so I tried the steps here: OS X Server: How to reset Profile Manager to its original state - Apple Support.  Didn't work again.  The log output makes me think it has a problem with the server's certificates, but server2 only has a SSL cert signed by server1.
I must be missing something, so any thoughts greatly appreciated.

I need help! I am in hurry.

    Hi,
    Sorry for my delay.
Based on your description, I’m a little confused with your issue. Would you please let me know more details
of this issue? Thanks for your understanding.
Would you please let me know OS edition information of this problematic server? Did you logon the server via
an administrator account? Meanwhile, would you please let me know the complete error message when access Device Manager, MMC or other .exe files?
For CMD, please open Task Manager, click File and select
Run new task. Then type CMD and select Create this task with administrative privileges option in
Create new task wizard. Will you still encounter issue?
By the way, I type above links which you provided in IE. However, I can only find
Page Not Found error. You can upload screenshots to
OneDrive and then post link here. (Please hide all protected or private information)
If any update, please feel free to let me know.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,

  • Hyper-V Server: How can I update drivers with limited Device Manager access?

I have a brand new Intel server, SR2625URLX. I want to use Hyper-V server R2. I have been having some issues with the networking, and Intel wants me to update to the latest drivers which have been certified for R2 versions of 2008, Hyper-V, etc. It was a struggle just to get it so I can see the device manager, but come to find out it is read-only when using remotely and there is no local GUI for it. I need to update the drivers. I tried copying the drivers to a share, and running this on both of the inf files thaat were part of the driver set, but the driver did not change (even after a reboot):
    pnputil -i -a <driverinf>
What else can I do to update the drivers for my NIC's?

pnputil seems to be the way to go.
Did you copy the inf files locally?
If you have any virtual networks defined, you might need to remove them, update the drivers, and then re-create them.
I am thinking that there might be some device not being identified properly or a file lock.  Also, the drivers must be signed properly or they will not load.
I just noticed this from the server core list:
To obtain a list of drivers that are installed on the server running a Server Core installation
     • At a command prompt, type:  sc query type= driver
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winservercore/thread/d43465c4-66e6-481f-a060-0fba173fbcec
Also, be aware that Server 2008 certified is not equal to Hyper-V certified - so don't let the tech support person tell you there isn't a difference.

  • "Device Manager is running in read-only mode because you are running it on a remote computer" when local

Hello - since configuring a Windows Web Server 2008 R2 x64 to be hardened for an internet-facing deployment I receive this:
"Device Manager is running in read-only mode because you are running it on a remote computer."
    when entering Device Manager.
I have tried reversing the changes I have made, such as:
    - Re-adding Client for Microsoft Networks
    - Re-enabling NetBIOS over TCP-IP
    - Re-adding File and Printer Sharing
    - Disabling the Windows Firewall in all profiles (public, domain, private)
I get no joy. It looks like a Microsoft ballsup. I'll try and use Process Monitor to have a look. Google returns only 1 page for this error.
    Luke

    Got it.
After my changes to DHCP and static IPs the machine picked up the IP address of another server on my little home LAN. The hostname in IPCONFIG was different to the actual server computer name and so this led Device Manager to think the connection and the
    local machine were different.
What an odd and infuriating problem. My thoughts on this are that Microsoft should be more verbose with error messages and their causes. For example, displaying the values of the assertion would help diagnose a problem; "The host-name www02.farm.brand.com
that you are connecting from does not match the local host-name rest01.dev.farm.brand.com. Connections from remote computers can only use Device Manager in read-only mode; some options will be disabled."
When troubleshooting, the main thing on an engineer's mind is "what has led Windows to its [unexpected] conclusion?"

  • HP Touchpad in Device Manager

I have HP touchpad which gets detected in Device Manager without driver.
How do I get latest drive on touchpad and install it. So my touch pad can be used as USB mode.
Right now it's not turning on and I tried everything... holding power,  Volumne Up, Menu for 15-60 sec with every possible combination. I am assuming tha If I can install correct driver then I can use that as USB and then install webOS may be.
Please help/suggest. I think my touch pad is not dead brick since can see in device manager.

Hello, and Welcome to the HP Support Community!
It's most likely dead, but there are a few things you can try.  (BTW, the device needs to turn on to get into "USB Mode").
How to Doctor an HP TouchPad (reflash the ROM)
On your Touchpad be sure to have:
USB cable. The battery is charged to at least 30%.
    Computer:
Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista Available USB port (not a hub or secondary port). Java 1.5 or later is installed. If you are not sure about what version of Java you have, or even if Java is installed, go to www.java.com and click the Do I have Java? link to install the latest version of Java. 210MB of storage space. Internet connection.
    Miscellaneous Info:
The update process will take approximately 15 minutes. During this process, your device will not be available for use.
    Downloading webOS Doctor
Download webOS Doctor on your desktop computer. If you have a webOS profile, get it from http://ws.hpwebos.com/webosdoctor/sorry.htm
If not, check the webOS Internals page: http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Webos_Doctor_Versions
Get your TouchPad ready to update
Hold the Power Button for several seconds until a menu appears. Tap Shut Down to completely power down your device.
    Running webOS Doctor
Double-click the file that was downloaded to run webOS Doctor. Follow the on screen directions up until you are asked to connect your device. Select the language you selected on your device, and click Next. Confirm your language choice. Click Accept to accept the terms of use. Click Next. webOS Doctor checks your system. BE PATIENT! I've seen this part take a few minutes to complete. After webOS Doctor finishes checking your system, you will be asked to connect your device.
Connecting your device and finishing the webOS Doctor update
Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable. You must connect your device directly to your computer, not through a USB hub or other intermediate device. Now the tricky part. Hold the Volume Up button on the device and insert the USB cable. After the large USB symbol appears on screen, let go of the Volume Up button. If you see the HP logo instead of the large USB symbol, you may have let go of the Volume Up button prematurely. If this occurred , wait until your device boots up, shut down your device and then repeat step 2. Windows will find your device and may offer to install two different drivers. When asked to install drivers of OMAP, select No, not at this time. When asked to install drivers for Palm Novacom (bootie), select Yes and let the drivers install. This may take a while. Once the drivers have been installed, the Next button will become available in webOS Doctor. Click Next. Do not disconnect your device from the computer during the update process. When the Reset Complete screen appears, click Done. Wait a few minutes for your device to reset. You're done!

We have multiple computers and iPhone devices which I have passed on to other family members, such as my wife.  Now she is not able to load apps to her devices, eventhough it appear she is logged into her own iTunes account.  How can I setup iTunes correctly on each device?  Currently, there is one PC and one Mac laptop and we each have iPhones, with one other family member not able to use his 'passed-down' device for iTunes, also.

Thanks pvonk, I will try downloanding the book from the Iphone right now.......
Just tried to download and it wants me to buy it again?  Is there some way around this?  I guess I thought that was the whole point of the cloud, buy it once and access from any of your devices right?
Also, I have logged into the icloud.com as suggested and will plink around there for a bit and try to understand.  It is just all so dang different that what I am used to; Apple's way, that is.
Thanks again for the Icloud tip and if you know of a way to download without making a 2nd purchase I would sure love to hear it!
Geez. one other thing (I guess I am complaining) but I bought more space in the cloud, they took my cash fast enough but have not yet increase the size of my storage space yet?  Is Apple sometimes slow to get internal stuff done?

No I didn't but I finally DID try HP scan instead of Scan Pro in the Hewlett Packard folder located in the application folder and was able to scan to an RTF file with the OCR doing quite well in the process.  I haven't done this in some time and perhaps before I also used HP scan to do OCR scanning.  Bottom line, I am able to do again what I wanted to do...

  • ITunes won't recognize my iPod. I have the Apple Mobile Device USB driver installed in my programs but it doesn't show up in my Device Manager or Services. Can someone help?

So I connected my iPod to iTunes and an error message came up saying it needed an updated version of iTunes 64 bit and I was missing the Apple Mobile Device USB driver so I downloaded it because another discussion said that was the solution. I did but it wont show up in my device manager or services. Can someone help me figure out whats wrong?

However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
    - Then do the other actions of:
