Can't share files between 10.6 and 10.4 macs

When I try to  copy a file from my MacBookPro running 10.6.8 to my pb-g4 running 10.4.11 first I get a request for my password, next I get an alert saying, "A newer  item named xxxx already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the one you're moving?" When this alert shows up, yes, the title of the file with size zero KB has newly appeared on the 10.4 mac. I click replace and get an alert that says, "The operation can't be completed because an item with the “” already exists." But the file didn't exist in that location before trying to copy.  How do I fix this other than using sneakernet technology.
The reason I  need to do this is that I want to print on a networked Kyocera Mita CS2050 printer.  There appears to be no driver for the printer compatible with OS 10.6. If I use a generic driver, I have no access to printer features like two sided printing.

I know the 10.4 driver won't work in Snow  Leopard. That's why I'm trying to transfer files to my old Powerbook from which  I can  print.  The Kyocera Mita Copystar 2550 is a laser printer/copier, so as far as I know, GutenPrint won't work with it. I downloaded new drivers from Kyocera Mita, but I  can't get Snow Leopard to work with it.
The Copystar is connected via ethernet. It works fine from other 10.4 macs.
The ironic thing is that I also have an older hp color Laserjet 3550 (usb). About 5 years ago it stopped working on  10.4 and if I  wanted to print anything, I had to restart my powerbook in 10.5 or print through my daughter's computer.  When I got my MacBookPro 10.6, the hp works fine.
But the more serious problem is that I need to be able to share files between these computers. I have no problem copying files to another 10.4 mac on the network, just to the  powerbook.

Or is there a problem with both OS's writing stuff to the
~/Home/Library folder that may be incompatible?
Yes, big time.  Mail, for sure, has a different file/folder structure, and would not be happy.
Plus, a number of apps (Apple and 3rd-party) are "Sandboxed."  That's a security feature, to prevent malware or bad coding from affecting things it shouldn't.  Some of their files, including the preferences files, aren't even stored in the same places!
Or to other places I'm not aware of?
Probably.  If you have two versions of the same app, they may or may not expect the same data setup.
To have one User folder for both OS's would save a lot of drive space
Not if you use some or all of woodmeister50's suggestions.
But I'm also not sure how I'd use Time machine with such a set up.
Just as you do now.  By default, Time Machine backs-up everything (except things like system work files, most caches and logs, trash) for all users and all internal drives & partitions.  By default, it excludes external drives.
You can change those defaults, of course, via TM Preferences > Options.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #32 for details and considerations of multiple drives.
    Presently I backup with . . . clones to other HD's
Good.   Yes, clones are different.  You need multiple "tasks" to back up multiple drives/partitions.  But once set up, that shouldn't be a big deal.

  • Hw do I share files between my laptop and my desktop?

How do I 'share' files between my laptop and my desktop?

    Set up a Network:
If each of your computers can access the Internet without changing cables, your Network is already in place.
The rest is just configuring as Niel suggests.

  • Can I share files between two different networks at same location?

Until TWC can offer DOCSIS 3.0 later this year or next...
    - In my home I have a closet where all my audio, video and network come together.
    - I have two cable modems from Time Warner
    - Modem A goes to a WRT320N; 192.168.0.1
-- This router connects all my "heavy" downloads, ie. DirecTV receivers, Netflix, home server w/videos, gaming, etc.
    - Modem B goes to a E2000; 192.168.1.1
-- This router connects my everyday use computers so they don't suffer poor speeds from all the traffic on Modem A
My question is, how or can I somehow share files between these two routers without the need for hitting the modems? Obviously I can just push files over the Internet but I am doing it at a much slower speed due to upload restrictions on the modem.
Thank you for any help on this!

The easiest way would be to assign LAN IP 192.168.1.2 to the WRT320N and disable the DHCP server. Then assign static IP addresses in 192.168.1.* to all devices connected to the WRT at the moment, e.g. 192.168.1.10, 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.2, DNS 192.168.1.2 (or DNS servers of your ISP).
Now you can connect a LAN port of the WRT to a LAN port of the E2000. All DHCP clients get the IP address from the E2000 which will assign the E2000 as gateway, i.e. they use the E2000 for internet. All other devices will have static IP addresses and use the WRT as gateway.

  • It appears that I can not share documents between my iMacs and mac air without first opening document in an IOS device.  Is this correct?  If so then iCloud for me is a giant step backward especially since idisk will be discontinued next year.

You are correct.  However, a document can not be opened by another computer unless the document has first been open by an iDevice.
iwork on iOS uses different file formats ( *.tef ) then iwork09 on Mac ( *.key , *. number , *.page ).
Uploaded documents to icloud.com must first be updated to the *.tef format and then re-written to the cloud system. The online service behind the iwork web-app does the re-conversion to Mac formats, pdf or Microsoft office. All that is happening "in the cloud", not on your Mac as he misses the engine to do the transcoding from the *.tef to the other formats. Mac simply does not know what *.tef is.

    thanks.

Hello smw380. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Yes. You just need to enable "Personal File Sharing" on both Macs.
o System Preferences > Sharing > Services tab
o Personal File Sharing: On (checked)

  • How can I share photos between my iphone and ipad?

I want to automatically share photos between my iPhone and iPad.  I use iCloud and I setup Photo Stream but my photos are not moving from one device to the other. My goal is to have all my photos on both devices- automatically. How can I accomplish this?
    Thank you!

Photos will Not go between iPad & iPhone..they have to go thro' iCloud as a provider or sync via your computer individually...you need Wireless on both or a direct USB connection..
On each iPad and iPhone you can initialize via the Summary/Photos when they are connected via iTunes..

  • Can't share files between XP and Windows 7. McAfee...

Added a Windows 7 laptop to my network which is based on a Windows XP Home SP3 desktop. Having followed all the help on both m/cs, searched this forum and tried the hint given to Stephen Draper last year (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/)
I can see both computers in BT Broadband Help on the desktop and also in 'Network' on the laptop. I've clicked on all the permissions for home networking - and still I can't see any shared files between the two m/cs.
I wonder if it's McAfee that's blocking the exchange, because it has taken over all Windows firewall functions.  I've looked at the list of McAfee exclusions and it seems OK (not that I really understand it) and in any case it won't let me add to it.

What you have done so far appears to be correct, however, and I dont know why, I pointed a friend of mine to here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749119%28WS.10%29.aspx as the issue is not just a simple networking setup.
If all your machines are running McAfee then you be able to 'trust' each pc on the network from McAfee.

  • Can I share file between my Mac G4 and My new MacBook Pro

How can I share programs from my power mac G4 to my new MacBook Pro?

    Hi stefanfan,
    Welcome to the forum.
There are a number of ways, all of which require that you have File Sharing enabled in both Macs. File Sharing is enabled via the Sharing Preferences within System Preferences. When both Macs are networked all you have to do is open up a Finder window (just double click on your hd icon) and click on the Network icon located on the sidebar on the left of the window. The other Mac should appear, click connect and you're in.
If you have broadband and are connected via a router, does your router have more than one port? If it does, simply connect the other Mac to the port with an ethernet cable.
If you have a router with wireless capabilities (and both Macs have Airport cards installed) then you can share files wirelessly, again by enabling File Sharing.
If you do not have a router, you can connect both Macs together with a network (ethernet) cable and, once again, they will be able to see each other and you can open/transfer files from one to the other.

  • Can i remotely share files between macbook pro and iMac

Want to know if I can do remote file sharing between macbook pro and imac.

Yes, absolutely. She can access her iMac from anywhere that has an Internet connection. If Screen Sharing is enabled, she can log in and use it as if she were seated at the iMac.
Provided the iMac's router supports the Bonjour Sleep Proxy (obviously all Apple AirPort Base Stations do), the iMac can even be asleep, and BTMM will wake it upon the router receiving a request to access the iMac.
The speed of her available Internet connection will be a limiting factor. Slower connections will be a bit laggy.
Her iMac will appear in a Finder Sidebar, under "Shared".

  • How can I share files between two users? or merge the user accounts

my laptop came home from the shop with two user accounts -never noticed that before - and some files are in one user account, some in another. I want to share them so I can just use one account. I just upgraded to Lion, so that may be an issue. Best of all would be to merge the two accounts so I don't have to think about it- just like 2 weeks ago. As it is, I have to log into one account to use Quicken, and another to use iWork - else I cannot access the files

Move the files to /Users/Shared/ and from there into the other account.
