Can't shut down after installing new monitor

I just connected a ViewSonic VA720 flat panel monitor to my G4, running OS 10.4.11 and now when I attempt to shut down, my computer's fans rev loudly for a moment before restarting the computer.
Btw, I had to adjust the screen resolution to 1280 x 1024 and the refresh rate to 60 hertz in order to use the monitor.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

Try a NVRAM reset. See Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial

  • 8.1 can't shut down after installing itunes

I recently reformatted and did a clean install of window's 8.1
I have done all updates, both windows and drivers and the machine is very smooth and stable.
After installing iTunes the computer will no longer shut down, it displays the logging off / shutting down screen but then just reboots.
I have attempted numerous resolutions to no avail, i.e. disabled NIC as bootable device, disabled the hybrid boot feature & flashed and tweaked some BIOS settings.
The computer will not even shut down when I give the command "shutdown /s /t 0"
I only had Windows Office and iTunes installed on the computer and suspecting that iTunes may be the culprit, I uninstalled it and now the computer shuts down without any issue.
I have since read several threads about iTunes and shutdown/restart issues with 64 bit versions of Windows although I have not found anyone else with my exact issue.
Is anyone aware of a resolution for this?
For now I will need to install iTunes so I can sync my phone and then uninstall so I can shut down!

Fingers crossed there will be an update for this, I was lucky that my install so was new that there weren't very many things that could have caused it because I don't think it would have ever occurred to me that iTunes was the issue.
I literally tried every other possibility before waking up in the middle of the night and realizing that the problem started right after I installed iTunes.
I have had issues with Apple software in the past where I attempt to disable it from launching automatically when I boot the computer and it will simply create another entry for itself in the startup list.
If I disable that one it makes another, and another and another.... It's like the freaking Apple hydra.
The want me to know how much I need them! lol

  • 4 hrs later - Computer shut down after installing new RAM (mid 2007 Imac)

Mid 2007 imac and I installed new Ram. It worked for 4 hrs then the Imac shutdown. The pressed power button but no power. Unplugged and replugged the power cord and 3 beeps sounded. I am wondering if it worked for 4 hrs or so, then why did it would it fail 4 hrs later?
I am running the correct ram because in system profiler under memory - it said that everything was ok.
    Any ideas?

or maybe the back tray wasn't tight enough?
I re-installed it now and so far so good.... I pressed tight and in an upwards motion. We'll see what happens

  • How to shut down after installing new OS?

    Hello,
I am selling my MBP, so I used the Snow Leopard desk to "wipe" my data from the machine, and then I re-intalled OS 10.6. Now the computer is at the "welcome" screen as if it was just purchased at the store. It asks you to select your country, your languge, etc, and then it asks if you are restoring from a Time Machine backup or what exactly you'd like to do.
My problem is (and I know this sounds stupid) I don't know how to turn the computer off now that it's as this "beginning" stage. It doees ot have the usual selections at the top of the screen (like the Apple Menu, etc), so I'm not sure what to do. For now, I just closed the lid and I'm hoping that it worked and it's currenlty sleeping.
But I'd like to be able to shut the machine down so that I can ship it to the new buyer.
    Thanks for any help!
PS: I also have the new iLife that I'd like to put on it (it had it before I wiped the data), but I can't figure out how to do that either. The machine is not setup for a user yet, and I don't want to mess it up for the person who is buying it. Is there anything I can do that will allow me to install it?

My reply was completely correct, other then ejecting the DVD. But then you really don't need to eject it as it is going with the computer anyway.
You can always restart the system and then eject and then hold down the power button to shut the system down again. Once restarted it will go to the First screen again

After having shut down after installing updates, when I restarted and tried to open a word doc, it started opening ALL the word docs and the only way I could stop it was by"force quit"  . This is REALLY annoying!!

May be it is the Resume feature.

Uncheck the box next to      "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".
    Best.

  • Can't shut down after going on line

After going on line I am unable to shut down the computer without using the power button. If I start up and don't go on line I am able to shut down with no problem. I have even redone my internet connection. Have a dial up connection. I have done a clean install and after still having the problem I did another install. I have used Preferential Treatment and DiskWarrior but am still having the same problem. Have checked the permissions and trashed some preference files without any luck. When the computer is running I am not having any other problems, just can't shut down.

You might try launching Activity Monitor from your Utilities folder, click on the Process ID to arrange things in the order in which they were launched. Take a look and see what has started running after Finder was launched. Activity monitor and pmTool will both be running, so too will Spotlight related processes mdimport and mds. Anything else, if you have quit all the programs you launched, is a potential candidate for interfering with shutdown, if it is refusing to let go. Those items with an icon are "regular" programs running, those without an icon are UNIX programs that are running. See if you have anything that might be related to Internet usuage that will not quit. You can force quit from the Activity Monitor.

  • Can't shut down after opening Java Control Panel

    Hello,
I'm just a regular guy with Windows ME and since I installed JRE 1.4.2_02 (for Mozilla 1.5), I can't shut down my pc after opening the Java Control Panel. Javaw.exe stays in memory (Norton System Information) even after the JCP has been closed. This was not an issue with 1.4.1 beta which I used for a long time. Then I could open the JCP applet and make adjustments (minor, just whether or not I wanted it to be able to cache applets etc.) then I would close it and nothing interfered with shutdown.
I have even tried Enditall2 and Sysinternals Process Explorer's close and kill functions and neither can close or kill Javaw.exe.
I have very little running in the background and never had shutdown issues until installing JRE 1.4.2_02 and it works fine other than this issue with JCP and shutdown.
    Thankyou for any advice.

Gave up, went back to 1.4.1_05, shutdown problem solved.
Disappointed but at least Java works okay and I can adjust things in JCP applet without having to do the three finger salute twice each time. No more Javaw in memory when I close the applet.
Played with Java Web Start's demos, seem to work fine, I guess. Really don't understand what JWS is for, not for us non-programmers?

Ignore the MacKeeper ad no matter what else you decide.
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Just sits there occupying very little space & never interfering, unless you need to invoke it in Single User Mode.

  • Apple keyboard not working after installing new monitor

Yesterday I installed a new monitor - HP EliteDisplay E231i - to my Late 2013 Mac Pro.  Previously I had been using super old apple monitors.  My apple keyboard was working great - I had it plugged into the new monitor itself.  I shut down the computer last night. This morning, the Mac Pro won't recognize my keyboard no matter what I do. I tried plugging it into every possible USB port on the tower and on the monitor. Restarted it after moving it each time. I'm currently typing with a Microsoft keyboard, which is working fine.  I tried the keyboard in 2 other laptops (macbook pro) and it works fine.  Is this a bug specific to the monitor??  I've been running Yosemite 10.10.2 since the last update, and I've had no issues till I switched the monitor out and tried to start the computer after shutdown.
Details: Mac Pro (Late 2013), Yosemite 10.10.2, 32 GB 1866 MHz DDR3 ECC, AMD FirePro D500 3072 MB
    Anyone know what's going on?

  • Adobe CS6 Apps Shuts Down After Installing Creative Cloud.

I can't start my Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign CS6 anymore, it just shuts down as soon as it's done loading, without any errors. Only Bridge CS6 will start.
I tried launching with Ctrl+Alt and Ctrl+Alt+Shift but it did not work.
Then I tried uninstalling it (With all the preferences as well), and install it again, that did nothing - still the same issue.
I updated windows and my gfx drivers (GeForece 332.21 - NVS4200M) after the issue started.
I tried both the 32bit and the 64bit version.
I have manually removed the preferences file.
I have disabled the firewall and my AV.
I have logged out and back in of the Creative Suite Utility.
My hosts file is not blocking any sites.
I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit.
I tried to open a issue on superuser but that did not help, nobody has awnsered it yet.

Nicoar do you receive any specific error messages?  I would recommend starting with the steps listed in Error "Failed to Install" Creative Cloud Desktop application - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/failed-install-creative-cloud-desktop.html.

  • Acrobat 9 Pro shutting down after install

I just purchased Acrobat 9 Pro upgrade. The install goes smoothly. However, when I go to open up the program, it opens and then shuts down. I have tried reinstalling after unstalling and still have the same problems. Does anyone have any suggestions? I need to get to open several pdfs and I can't.
    Thank you!

Do a search for others with this problem. It is being reported a lot right now and seems to be related to a MS issue. Of course, Microsoft says the vendors need to ensure the compatibility. Bill

  • Problems shutting down after installing 10.5.3 update?

Has anyone had any problems shutting down there IMac's after installing 10.5.3 update? I've tried shutting down twice and the image that appears when shutting down seems to go in an endless loop an doesn't shut down.

Can you restart from the menu and hold the shift key down, until the Mac
boots in a SafeBoot login screen; then choose Disk Utility (shortcut under
GO in Finder window, to Utilities folder) and run 'repair disk permissions'
    then restart the computer normally...(?)
You may also have to consider starting the computer from the OS X
installer disc and choose from an option menu there (not to install)
and choose to use Disk Utility from the booted installer disc, to run
'repair disk' from there? You could also run 'repair disk permissions'
while booted from that installer disc, but maybe you'd still have to
repair those from the running system for best effect once it is back
running from the hard drive's system.
Some minor issues can happen after an update, usually just repairing
disk permissions before installing the update, and/or running up in
SafeBoot, can help. There are other things to try and do, if these don't
    help that much. The state of the system prior to an update is important;
since an update can't fix anything otherwise non-related to an update.
Maintenance issues aside, after you repair disk permissions, safeboot,
and restart, if there still is an issue, you could try to download the Combo
OSX 10.5.3 update file and install it over your system; and then repair
disk permissions again after it finally restarts normally.
Was the 10.5.3 update a smaller (delta) file or was it the Combo (large) file?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • PowerBook G4 will not shut down after installing Leopard

Hi - has anyone found shut down problems (or restart for that matter) after installing Leopard. I've got 30Gb of hard drive free on a Powerbook G4 (3 years old).

    No I don't.
Looking around for answers to this one it seems it is a fairly common problem with new Leopard users. One solution (apparently from Apple) was to delete the cache folders in both the user's home folder and in the top-level system folder. I have tried that but no luck yet.

  • My mac mini doesn't shut down after installing mountain lion?

Right after i installed mountain lion and checked all the new features, I closed all applications, clear ram, clear cache, clear print queue, made sure that nothing was running when i logged out(only one 1 user was logged on.) I shut down and it seemed normal until the mac mini restarted, saying there was a problem and the normal error report appeared on screen when everything rebooted(after I log back on.) I'm angry. Really what should I do, I just bought this on December 2011( i7 mac mini sandy bridge) of last year. I hope apple releases an update to fix this problem.
My first attempt was to go to disk utility and fixed it, it worked I was able to shut down. However after that it started to go back to the way it was and it still wont shut down. Yes Im able to do everything else like put the hardrive to sleep(yes it goes to sleep I made sure) and force closing applications. Right now Im going to attempt doing what I did before but I will appreciate if a representaive or an apple veteran would give me advice or some useful information on how to fix this problem.
This happened 8/18/2012 at 6:57(when I installed Mountain lion and checked.)
