Can't shut of my iPad 4 gen

I got myself an iPad Air yesterday. I installed everything from my iPad 4 gen and that worked fine.
My husband is going to use the iPad 4, so I took off stuff I knew he didn't want. Added his name to Face Time etc.
Seeing I had my book still on the iPad 4, I used it last night to finish the book.
When I shut the book app (Bluefire Reader), I got the page with all the apps on it, but still could see the book page very small in the back ground.
I thought, I will shut down the whole iPad, but it's not responding. It goes off what you do when you need it later, but not a complete shut down.
When I turn it on I see the normal page with background and still that last page from the book very small in the middle of the screen, but no apps. Siri is still working, but that's it.
What happened? And most important, how do I get everything back?

OK, I tried to find anything similar, but couldn't find it. After posting, I saw a column next to my question "more like this". I found the answer and it worked. I hold the power and home button for 10 sec. And it rebooted.
Everything still there. Pffff what a relieve!

I can't shut down my IPad. The button no longer seems to work.

I realize you've stated that the sleep/wake button (button on top) no longer functions but try the follow anyways:
    Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
    1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
    2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
    3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

Following ultimately helped me : Make sure that you are logged in at the App Store App or iTunes App with your apple ID and password with a US account. Turn your iPad off and on and than you should see the Radio button again. It won't work if you are logged on with a foreign account. If you are not logged in at all, it worked, too.

  • Can't update firmware on iPad 3rd Gen (GSM) 6.0.1

I received an iPad 3rd gen (gsm) for my birthday from my sister in law, who works at Apple (this will come into play). The firmware is 6.0.1 and I am unable to update to the latest firmware. I have tried using iTunes and OTA and i get the generic error "Not eligible for this build." (device is not jailbroken)
I have used four different cables and three different computers (the ota issue kind of makes this a redundant check but I tried just to be safe)
I have deleted and redownloaded the firmware via Apple/iTunes and even finding the update and trying to manually update or restore via the ispw file.
I have also tried the hosts file method (adding a # before the apple line and also deleting the line completely and every other combination of adding lines and such).
I am able to restore on the device itself and that does not change my outcome when I try to update. What I think might be the issue (that I found out today) is that the iPad used to have a "Development" sticker on it. When I try to enter in the serial number into the support page it says the serial number does not exist. I have no idea where to go from here.
Any suggestions? (unfortunately I live an hour and half from an apple store and I'd like to try and fix it myself first)

She has no idea on what to do as she isnt a developer (I'm not going to disclose her exact position).
I've tried to reset the content and settings and it restores it to factory default but it unfortunately still gives me the error. I'm going to try and install a beta version of ios 8 (thats still signed by apple) and see if that may work.
I'm debating on bring it into the apple store or not as that may be my only option.

  • How to get photos off iPad 1st gen

Anyone know a way I can get photos off an iPad 1st Gen? It is not recognized by iPhoto 9 that is currently running on Mavericks.
This should have been synced a long time ago but my wife never did and now has photos on it that she wants.... I know, I know....
    Tried:
    - Using Image Capture - does not see it
    - When I launch iPhoto, it says "Loading" and never does anything.
    - iTunes does see it but that doesn't help to get photos off of it.
    - Saw a program that let's you transfer files off but it cost $30 and thought there might be a way to do ift for free.
    Thanks, Jeff

The iOS version has nothing to do with importing photos.
Where are the photos located? iPhoto will only get photos that were saved to the iPad like saved from an email attachment. Those are in the Saved photos album
If the photos are in another album they were synced to the iPad. To get those you need a third-party program like PhoneView or TouchCopy
    Also see:

Hi thanks for the encouragement.  It's not that the severs are "swamped", iOS 7 has been successfully installed.
I can't access the apps list in iTunes because it *****
down.  Its pretty frustrating because many of my apps require me to manually transfer files into iTunes first to view
them.  Not sure if the servers being swamped is an issue for me, unless they release a bug fix through another version of iTunes.
Has anyone else had this problem?  My iPad is pretty useless unless I can access my app list in iTunes....

  • My Ipad 3rd gen kept shutting off and we would have to restart and log back on to internet with password. So backed up to icloud and did a restore. It could not complete the restore. No luck at Genius bar. Can trade for a new one for 299. any ideas to fix

Ipad 3rd gen kept shutting off. Had to restart and log back on to internet with password. backed up  and did restore.
could not complete. Took to Genius bar and they could not either. Said we trade with $299 for another one.is there
someplace to get these things repaired. It was 4 months out of warranty.

Yet another quick follow up to something I have stumbled upon with this issue. If I connect to my Airport Extreme on the 5Ghz channel, Dictation continues to have issues. However, when I switched to the 2.4Ghz channel dictation has been working great now for a while.
The dictation option is still missing under General>Settings>Keyboard however.
Not sure at all what one would have to do with the other? but hey, if it's working then I'm going with it for now. :-)

  • IPad 3rd gen no longer charges unless shut off and not recognized by iTunes

iPad 3rd gen no longer charges unless shut off and not recognized by iTunes.  Done 2 resets, used original charger and cable and bought brand new charger and cable from Apple store.  Nothing works.  This started yapping after the iOS 7.1.1 update.

Common troubleshooting is to try a different USB port and to give your ipad a reset. (hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot)
You can also try on a different computer to see if it's the ipad or the computer.
When you charge, do you try to charge plugged into the wall? that's the best way to charge.
If you go through all that and it's still not working hten it may be time to make an appointment at your local apple store and have them check it out

  • Can I plug in my 110v iPad second gen. charger into 220v charger. I have an adapter for this outlet. Thanks!

Can I plug in my 110v iPad second gen. charger into 220v charger. I have an adapter for this outlet. Thanks!

FOr this and anything, read the fine print on the charger. It should say that it takes an input of 100 - 240v. That means all it needs is an adapter. If it doesn't have that number range then don't plug it in. (like stedman says, official apple chargers are rated for world wide power)

Look at this similar problem in getting Netflix on an iPad 1. Same technique should work for you.

Have you tried a reset by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button and the home button for 20 seconds (maybe longer) until the Apple logo appears, ignore the red slider.  Then turn back on. You won't lose any data doing the reset.

  • HT204387 I have an iPhone 3GS and I can't get it to pair with my iPad 3rd Gen neither will discover the other any suggestions

I have an iPhone 3GS and I can't get it to pair with my iPad 3rd Gen neither will discover the other any suggestions

An iPad and iPhone cannot connect via Bluetooth unless you are trying to use a Personal Hotspot feature on your iPhone or have one of the few third-party apps that allow limited file transfer or device-to-device gaming. Unless you're attempting one of these, then any previous "pairing" was probably illusory. If you are trying to use such a thing, tell us which one and someone may be able to provide suggestions.
