Can't shutdown iMac after 10.5.3 update

Updated to 10.5.3 yesterday. No problems there, problems started hours later when I tried to shutdown computer. No luck, black/grey spinning timer thing (not beach ball) just keeps spinning away. Only way to turn off computer is to hold power button down. I also can't start computer successfully unless I unplug my FW 800 My Book Studio Edition external hard drive.
Computer will sleep/wake without problem.

I have the exact same issue on my MacBook after upgrading a few days ago. I get that little "loop", and my MacBook just won't shut down until I hold down the power button. It never happened with 10.5.2. It's the only problem I'm having with the upgrade. I'm sure it's only a short term thing, as Apple usually fixes such things rather quickly. Even so, I hope they fix it soon.

Often when people think they've deleted an application, what's really happened is that they deleted its icon from the Dock. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A to open the Applications folder. If the application is in that folder, drag it to the Dock (not to the Desktop or anywhere else.) The other Dock icons will move out of the way to make a place for it.

I've been using it on all of my computer without any problems. Remember you won't see any positive comments here. Everyone here is complaining about a problem. If you want a good experience with any upgrade or update first make a backup from which you can boot the computer. If you are installing an update, like 10.10.3 for example, always download and install the Combo Updater - OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update. Before you install any update or upgrade over an existing system you should do this:Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Looping Restart in Early Intel iMac after recent 10.5 update

My friend's iMac is stuck in a restart loop after downloading the latest update for her 10.5 system. She hadn't installed an update for about 4 months so I am not sure what update would have caused the loop. Her computer was working fine before the update so I am picking it is a software issue.
Having searched the forums I haven't come up with people experiencing a similar problem.
_*What is happening:*_
Hit the startup button, it hangs in the white Apple logo screen with the spinning icon for five to ten minutes ... then it automatically restarts itself returning to the same loop over and over again.
_*What I have done:*_
1. Tried a PRAM reset ... no change
2. Tried an Install Disc restart with the 'C' key ... it starts alright but then says this is the wrong disc for the computer. I can't find my Leopard install disc. I will have a better look for it soon.
3. Tried connecting it as a target drive ... I just get a blank white screen
_*A further problem:*_
I was going to reset her computer off her Time-machine backup but when I checked it out it would not allow me into it saying I did not have permissions ... which means any reinstall of the system will not be able to access her time-machine.
Any ideas of what I should try? I will try to find my Leopard install disc and do the reboot off it. I think that is my best bet at the moment.

Thinkpad E440 can't use wireless after 2.07 BIOS Update

Hi all, I need some help. I just bought a new thinkpad edge e440-Q01 last sturday. After I installed Win 7 ultimate 64 Bit, all the driver, everything work fine, i can connect to the internet, start working etc.
Then I update the BIOS, first it was 1.61 version then I upated my BIOS using BIOS utility for win 7 (downloaded from http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page). After that i can't connect to the interter via wireless LAN. It was said that I need to turn on the "hardware radio switch", both intel wireless utility and thinkvantage connection utility says i need to switch the wireless on, but, i can't find the hardware switch for wireless on thinkpad edge e440.
I try to push F8 button, as there is a symbol of wireless LAN, but nothing happens.
Then when I open the device manager, there is lenovo connect 1.0 device and i can't find it's driver, so it remain as unknown device.
I try to reinstall the windows, but now i don't have bluetooth to.
Other driver such as GT740, Ethernet, chipset, usb, etc are working just fine.
Anyone can help?

just for addition, lenovo bios update utility have 2 option task. to update bios and model number. ican update the bios but not the model number.

HELP! I can't use SKYPE after the 7.0 update!!

After my SKYPE automatically updated to the latest version (7.0 i guess, because i already uninstall it), signed in but the message windows can't be seen... Stop Skype from running on your computer. Quit or use Windows task manager to kill any Skype.exe processes.
Go to Windows Start and in the Search box type %appdata%\skype and press Enter. Find now a folder with the name of your Skype account. Open this folder. You will find there a file named config.xml. You may see only config but with XML Document in the Type column. Delete this file. Restart Skype.

Can't enable FIPS after 34.0.5 update

When Firefox updated to the latest version all of my saved passwords disappeared. After a lot of trial and error I found the only way to recover my passwords was to restore Firefox from a backup and disable FIPS before updating. However, now I have updated to 34.0.5 I cannot re-enable FIPS. The instructions to enable it on Mozilla's website are outdated and do not apply to the latest version. The enable FIPS option is still there in security devices but when it is clicked nothing happens, except my passwords disappear again until I restart Firefox, and FIPS remains disabled. Does anyone know of a fix?

After downloading three app updates today, I find that I can no longer rearrange my app icons.
I hold the icon I wish to move and slide my finger once the icons begin to boogie but the image of the icon I'm moving is delayed by a full page distance from my directing finger. Then when I release my touch, the icon I'm trying to move simply snaps back into its previous location.
I've rebooted, reset, and resynced to no avail.
I sure hope I don't have to repeatedly go through the restore cycle to correct this problem.
Also, the backup while resyncing takes forever after this icon problem appeared. Is my iTunes calling home with excessive error reports the cause of this slowness?
Is the app update software is failing to write to disk correctly? There sure seems to be a corrupting influence somewhere in this updating process.
Can anyone offer a cure or even a clue here?

IMac after 10.6.8 update no more Wake for network access!!

iMac 2009 - after 10.6.8 no more wake for network access - is a sleep issue because i tested several approached to see what is the problem. If the computer enter in sleep mode then i cannot wake remotely. Anyone with the same problem? (vnc user, etc)

10.6.8 contained a modified version of /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext, more specifically /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/Intel82574L. kext.
I replaced IONetworkingFamily.kext with the version that was present before the 10.6.8 update and my WOL now works once more.
So I'm pretty sure right now that 10.6.8 broke my WOL and I'm also pretty sure I fixed it but I'm not sure what other issues I'm causing as a result.
I have no idea how I get a reaction from Apple given that I have no "support credit" but surely they should support a customer with regressed software. Anyone got any ideas?

Problem to start iMac after 10.4.11 update please help

My iMac suddenly unprovoked not working after I downloaded the latest OS X 10.4.11 update from apple.com.
After downloaded successfully, I double clicked the file to update, but nothing happened, the computer seemed not respond anything, so I logged out, but still not responding. I waited for almost 30 minutes I force switched off iMac by holding down the switch button.
Then I tried to switch it back on that normally iMac would run fine, but it stuck again remained as the starting screen, a white background with an Apple logo in the middle and a circle spinning displays loading, but wait forever and nothing happens.
How can I start my Mac as I am a new user of Macs? Is there another way?

Just in case you are in the same situation & haven't already wiped your files then read this:
I was pointed in this direction (see link below) when the same thing happened to me & I have managed to retreive all of my data using another mac that has OS X & a firewire cable.

Here is some more info as well here from me to try to help to explain things as at first I couldn't make head nor tail of what I was supposed to do:
Make sure the mac that works is switched on & that your mac that will not start up properly is switched off. Connect the 2 computers using a firewire cable & then switch the mac that will not start up properly on while holding the 't' key down.
After a while a symbol will bounce around on your mac & the mac that works ok that you are connected to should show your hard disk on it's desktop (a bit like when you plug a camera or a phone or an i-pod in). The you can retrieve what you need to save off your hard disk (by dragging it onto the computer that works) & back it up. This may take some time but at least you will have waht you need
Then AND ONLY ONCE YOUR DATA IS SAFE you can erase & re-install your system software.
To do this you should eject your hard drive from the computer you are using to rescue your data (i.e. like when you eject a cd/phone/i-pod etc.)
Then you can restart your mac (the one that has frozen) and then immediately put your mac OS X installation dvd (the one that came when you got your mac) press c while it starts and then say install. You will need to also go to options & click erase & install. This will format your computer & erase everything off it so like I said make sure your data is safe first on another computer or even better onto disk.
I hope this is as helpful as I found it when I was told the same information earlier...

Still dropping wifi on iMac after 8.1.1 updates

Have been on a few service calls to Apple after installing Yosemite..as my IMac keeps dropping the wifi signal and is stubborn to rejoin..tells me my router is not recognized 15 times..before it accepts it..then drops it after sleep mode. All other devices work fine off same router..Apple laptops, Iphones 5 5s and 6, ipads, ipod touch..but the imac is wanky. Service call last night said 8.1.1 updates will fix this...well after update it is worse than ever. Apple help..you are jamming up my wifi connectivity with a bug in Yosemite

Can't log in after 10.6.8 update

I just updated to 10.6.8 tonight, and went on the App Store to see if any more news about Lion. Noticed I had 4 updates, selected "Update All" and signed in.... gear wheel just spun and spun and after a minute or two told me login failed. Opened iTunes, shut off home sharing and then attempted to sign in to reopen it, and got "the password you entered is incorrect" (no, it's not). Tried a restart twice, checked my firewall, still no go. Are the servers just bogged down with people updating? earlier this evening when I tried downloading the update, it told me 4 hours(!?!?) to download 275 mb with a simultaneous dual band Airport Extreme, sitting 8 feet from my MBP. Later on it only took a few minutes, but still left me with this problem. Anyone else

Try booting in Safe Mode. Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
It can take a little longer to boot in Safe Mode then a normal boot. Once you are in Safe Mode, go to the Apple menu (top left in your screen) then click: Restart.

And.... launch iTunes. From the menu bar click Store / View My Account / Edit Payment Information. Make sure the Security code and expiration date for your credit / debit card is available and correct then click Done. This is necessary even for updating software

Can't send mails after 10.4.6 update

Well, the topic pretty much says it all. After I upgraded to 10.4.6 I can no longer send mails. This happens with three completely unrelated SMTP servers, so I'm pretty sure it's a Mail problem. Receiving mails works without any problems and excepte the return of the ugly bubbles everything else is working fine as well.
I already re-entered my login values, didn't change a thing.

I didn't even update. One day Mail just stopped sending mail. Can't remember doing anything specific. Looks like a common problem these days from having read several discussion boards. I'm on the bandwagon. Reinstalled, created new accounts, triple checked, checked with ISP, disabled password authentication...
I even tried downloading another mail program, Revolver, but that can't send either, so I'm stumped, both recieved mail just dandy. In Revolver it gives a better hint to the problem "SMTP Error 103 (Name Resolution Error)", Doesn't help much though. As I understand, 103 is just a general error anyway.

Can't open QuickTime after trying to install update 7.4

I've tried to update my Quicktime Software to the 7.4 that keeps popping up on my software update. After it loads, verifies, and goes to install I receive the notice the Quicktime can't be installed. an unexpected error occurred and the installer package has been moved to the Trash. It tells me to try again, open the package from the finder... besides not being able to install the update, now I can't open QuickTime at all. Ideas?

Quicktime Can't open files after 10.4.10 update

I thought I had escaped all problems after installing the 10.4.10 combo updater, repairing permissions, etc. But today while trying to watch the iPhone Guided Tour video I discovered that Quicktime can't open it, nor anything else for that matter. Can't open audio files of any type, nor any video format. I have the current version of Quicktime, and after reinstalling it and reinstalling the combo updater, the situation remains broken. Quicktime Player will launch, but only to an error message :"Error Opening Movie. The movie could not be opened."
Curiously I can watch the iPhone movie in iTunes. And all other audio formats supported by iTunes play as usual. Any suggestions?

Would you mind expounding on this .... there is more than one Library.
In the "main" (not the house user library) I did find a file in the Quick Time folder "Toast Video CD Support.qtx", and I removed it (that was the only file in there). Still getting the gray ? mark.
Trying everything suggested in this forum and then some ... no good.
did you try removing 3rd party codecs from the
/Library/Quicktime folder to see if one of them has a
conflict with the update?
