Can't shutdown MacBook Pro system trying to copy from desktop, and also move something on desktop. Can I force a shutdown in the hope of rebooting will fix the problem?

Doing what nbar says is dangerous, so I recommend you to try other steps before.
First, press Alt, Command and Esc keys, so the Force Quit window will show up. Choose Finder and relaunch it, so the copy process will stop. Then, you will be able to turn off the Mac.
If it doesn't work, press Control, Command and Eject keys to restart. If nothing works, do what nbar says

How can I order macbook pro systems disk?
I recently tried to make a 'clone' of my iMac with my MacBook Pro. I used 'Migration Assistant' with a firewire connection. Now my macbook doesn't want to start-up. It freezes with a blue screen.
After a little research I have decided that it would be best if I just started new with the macbook, then try the 'cloning' again. The snag comes where to start with a new macbook, I would need to re-install the OS, but cannot as I do not have the systems disk for my macbook. I did try it with the systems disk for my iMac, but this did not work.
I would like to order the systems disk for my MacBook as I am in France. Does naybody know if I can do this online and if so where?!?You need to call AppleCare.

Wife has an older MacBook Pro. when an app uses flash player "Blocked plugin" comes up. I don't know much about mac, tried to update flash player and get newer version already installed, and update and still get same message. How do I uninstall flash player and reinstall?

Can't restore MacBook Pro to factory settings/boot from usb or dvd
So I recently got a MacBook Pro, currently running OS X 10.7.4 Lion. I am well-versed in the world of Windows, however am quite new when it comes to macs (whole reason why I got it).
I'm trying to restore it to its factory settings without owning a restore disc. The HDD only has one partition (no recovery partition).
I have located and downloaded a torrent for an OS X installer, specifically a .dmg image file containing OS X 10.7.
I tried burning that image to a DVD, but when I go to boot from the DVD (to my understanding, this is done by holding "C" during boot) it doesn't work, and just continues to proceed to the logon screen as it normally would.
I have tried converting the image from a .dmg to a .iso (something I am far more familiar with) using one of my Windows machines, and then burning that to a DVD, however, it yields the same result as above.
I have tried using the Disc Utility to format a flash drive (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) and then using the same Disc Utility to "restore" the image file to the USB drive. When I go to boot from this (holding alt/option at boot) it shows the internal HDD as the only bootable drive.
Is it possible that since I am technically running a newer version of Mac OS X (10.7.4 and using an installer of 10.7) that it will not allow me to do so? I know Apple has made it difficult to downgrade iPhones and the like, and I suppose it wouldn't surprise me a great deal to find out that the same applies to their computers.. But if I am attempting to boot from a different source, and use that to format and repartition my HDD, then I don't see why that would matter...

I am very anal about keeping everything that comes with a computer. I don't misplace or lose them. I've been buying computers since '88, and I am very careful to maintain original items. I searched the original MacBook Pro box several times, and there's nothing in there but the original purchase receipt from the Apple Store and the form fitting black plastic tray and cushion.
I did try wiring the system, and that's when it tried to restore Lion (and wouldn't let me do a restore of anything else).
Are you saying that if I do upgrade to Lion, and then do a system restore, then the buyer will not be able to use Lion? -
Macbook pro startup time increased suddenly from 15 sec to 25 sec. How can we resolve this?

There is no 'Erase and Install' command on a Mac with a Recovery Partition (Command+R), please check your research again. -
Airport in macbook pro doesn't auto-find signals quickly and also drops sig
So recently, my macbook pro, which I use on campus, has been acting up when it comes to the airport. If I close the screen and open it up when I want to use the laptop, the airport won't find WIFI signals even though the computer itself has not moved. I have to use the "assist me" in network preferences or turn off the airport and turn it back on before it will find a signal. And then, if that's not enough of a hassle, it will randomly cut off from the WIFI signals I have and I have to go back and reconnect manually. If anyone can help me with this, I'd really appreciate it. The macbook pro is only a year and a half old, it should not be acting up for the price I paid for this thing and the hype everyone gives them.

I did the SMC reset and that did shut down the computer (did not notice if the power adaptor lite blinked) when pushed power button (after waiting approx. 30sec.) to see if computer would display same message -- it did! Here is report:

i can't change the brightness on my macbook pro. i tried the buttons on the keyboard, went to settings and tried to do it from there, didn't work. i have restarted my computer as well and that didn't make a difference. please help.

Hi, I turned my MacBook Pro off before I went to sleep, and this morning when I awaken. I can't seem to turn up or down my volume. It comes up with all the volume bars and a little circle sign with a diagonal line in the middle, like a stop sign. I have gone to system preferences > Volume > Output BUT all my volume preferences have gone all light grey and wont let me access them.

Can you still boot to the Recovery partition using Command and R whilst booting? Or did you wipe the Recovery partition as well?
If your Recovery partition is still intact, you can simply boot to it and reinstall the OS via the Internet. If you wiped the Recovery partition, you can hold down Command, option and R keys whilst booting and boot into true Internet Recovery mode. You'll be able to reformat the hard drive, erasing all partitions (format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a dingle GUID partition) and then reinstall the OS that shipped with your machine.
Note that you should use a physical Ethernet connection when restoring over the Internet - it's three times slower if you use wifi.
Try your Recovery partition first and if that doesn't work, use Internet Recovery.

When I open my macbook it is running extremely slow - especially once I launch safari. It can take minutes to load a page or for a page I am already typing on to even respond. I have pasted below part of my log from the application - Console. I have not included all of it as it was 7 pages long but please let me know if you need further information. Thank you for any help!

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to reboot in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, the uninstallation may have no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
