Can't Shutdown or Re-Start iBook G4

I guess the title explains my problem. Now that I've installed 10.5 on my iBook G4 It can't be shut down or re-started. This is a GIANT bug. Also I hate the new finder so much I probably won't install it on my G5 for a LONG time.

About the finder, didn't you see any screenshots before getting Leopard? Actually, there is some added functionality, but I agree that the 10.4 finder looks much nicer than the 10.5 one, excluding cover-flow. I really do like the way how all the main folders look really nice in the side-bar (and how it would always fit without a side-bar), and I think brushed metal and bright colors are nicer than dark gray plastic, and the photo-realistic-like folders in Tiger look much nicer than the plastic head-on folders in Leopard, but it's not like it's harder to use or anything.

How can I speed up the "start speaking" feature in iBooks? (System Preferences Dictation and speech does not do anything to the speech speed.) The rate is a bit to slow.

Hi, I had the same problem you described, and I noticed that there are two ways of activating text to speech on iBook for Mac, with different speed results (at least on my MacBook Pro Retina display)
On your iBook you can select the text and and then click on > More> Start speaking,  and you will get a certain speed, which tends to be too slow.
But you will get the speed you had selected with "Go to System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech. In there is a slider to adjust the speaking rate." if you use the TOP MENU (next to the black apple)  under Edit>Speech>Start Speaking. I also learned that under System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech, there is an option for a shortcut which is very helpful. And you can change Key. Hope this was helpful.

  • How can I open a PDF in iBooks on iPhone 5s?

I have PDFs in iBooks. When I try to open them it says I should open them with Adobe Reader. I downloaded Adobe Reader but can't seem to get the PDFs to open with it.
I found a previous thread saying that you can't use Adobe Reader with iBooks, but that was before the 5s came out, so I'm starting a new thread. If you can't open a PDF from iBooks with Adobe Reader, why is it telling me to use Adobe Reader? And how else can I open it?
This shows what happens when I try to read my PDF, and click on the icon that's supposed to let me open it in Adober Reader:

This particular file is a PDF Portfolio, which needs Flash to display correctly. When you open a PDF Portfolio in the Adobe Reader mobile it will open in list view to get around the fact that Flash isn't supported on iOS. So, it won't open properly in a native viewer on iOS only within the Adobe Reader.

  • I have 2 Apple IDs. Can I transfer or merge my iBooks?

I would like to stop using my old Apple ID (which is my email from a previous employer), and start using my new Apple ID. Can I merge or transfer my iBooks from the old account to the new one?
I want to have all my stuff in one library.
    Thanks!

You can merge the contacts from one account with your other one without overwriting them.  Sign into the first account, download them as vCard (iCloud: Export contact information as a vCard), email them to a device signed into the account you want to merge them with, tap the vCard and choose Add..., then Create New Contacts.
You can also migrate a copy of the data in one account and merge it with the other by signing into the account you are leaving, then signing out (or deleting the account if not running iOS 8), then choosing Keep on My iDevice when prompted.  Then sign into the other account and choose Merge when prompted.  This won't move Notes however.  If you are syncing notes that you want to migrate from the other account, you can temporarily add the account to your Mac as a secondary account by going to System Preferences>Internet Accounts (or Mail,Contacts,Calendars)>Add Account>iCloud and signing in with the other account ID.  Then enable notes syncing in the secondary account.  You will then be able to open the notes app and drag and drop notes from one account to the other.  When you're done, delete the secondary account from your Mac.
You can't merge IDs as Apple does not allow it.  Also, you won't be locked out of anything for 3 months.  The "90-day switch" rule only applies to changing your iTunes store account, not your iCloud account.  Just leave your iTunes store account as-is.  The ID you use for the iTunes store does not have to be the same as the ID you use for iCloud.

  • [SOLVED] Can not shutdown/restart from KDE with systemd

    Hello,
Recently, following I switched to a pure systemd setup.  The process was simple and most things worked "right out of the bpx".  However, I can not shutdown or restart from KDE!
Let's say that I do the 3 finger salute (ALT-CTRL-DEL) and select "Turn off computer" what I get is KDE shutting down, but then I will only get a console (TTY) login prompt.  Pressing ALT-CTRL-DEL then will trigger a reboot.  I can also login and use "systemctl poweroff".  However, I don't understand why it doesn't work straight from KDE.
Are there some packages I must install?  Are there some systemd services that I must enable?  What other relevant info should I include in this post?

As bgc1954 said, there is also a symlink "/sbin/poweroff". Just edit the file "/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc", go to [shutdown] an replace the line "HaltCmd=/sbin/halt" with "HaltCmd=/sbin/poweroff".

  • Can a "shutdown abort" cause a fractured block?

Hey there, simple question: Can a "shutdown abort" cause a fractured block?
I'm currently doing some postmortem work on an old DB (EBS R12 OBA) installation and what might lead to a fractured block. It appears that once a fractured block is detected, Oracle Support automatically shuffles the issue off as a "serious issue within the OS/HW layer". I suppose as a DBA this means they can wash their hands of the issue and pass it on to someone else.
So far it appears that an OS level app could compromise the write of logical blocks to OS blocks. It also appears that logical volume configuration (pertaining to an older AIX install) could lead to fractured blocks. Yet another article indicates that an HBA I/O error could lead to this issue. And of course file-system corruption.
But...going back to the original question, can a shutdown abort on a database introduce a fractured block?

It cannot. A shutdown abort or any abnormal termination means that active transactions are terminated without COMMIT or ROLLBACK. When you start the database after a SHUTDOWN ABORT or any other abnormal termination, Oracle says the active transactions failed and rolls them back. You will be left with the database in a consistent state as if those active transactions never occurred. I suppose you could say that until recovery is complete the block could be in a fractured state meaning that the contents could be inconsistent. But once the database is opened, the block is consistent and not fractured.

  • I can only shutdown arch linux using the terminal.

Recently I started using SLIM to log into Arch Linux. I was having trouble with the gnome-keyring window popping up everytime I logged in while using GDM. I downloaded SLIM and changed some settings so that gnome-keyring wouldn't pop up everytime.
Here are the changes I made:
    ~/.xinitrc using this article https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/18930
    exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
    eval $(gnome-keyring-daemon -s --components=pkcs11,secrets,ssh)
    And /etc/pam.d/slim
    #%PAM-1.0
    auth requisite pam_nologin.so
    auth required pam_env.so
    auth required pam_unix.so
    account required pam_unix.so
    password required pam_unix.so
    session required pam_limits.so
    session required pam_unix.so
    session optional pam_loginuid.so
    session optional pam_ck_connector.so
    auth optional pam_gnome_keyring.so*
    session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start*
*= the changes I made to the file.
I was hoping to just stop gnome-keyring from popping up everytime I log into Arch Linux (ideally I wanted to auto log in) and now I can't shutdown unless I use the $ sudo shutdown -h now command in the terminal. When I click on the "Power Off" button in Gnome 3 it basically logs me out to the SLIM log in screen. I was able to shutdown the computer before by shutting the laptop screen/lid but that doesn't do anything now for some reason. Is there a way for me to auto log into arch without the gnome-keyring popping up everytime?
Additionally, with the gnome keyring dialog I wasn't able to click the "Automatically log in....." radio button because it was grayed out for some reason.

  • How can I shut down the start sound on my IMac under OS X 10.9.5

How can I shut down the start sound on my IMac under OS X 10.9.5

Did you try using 'mute' in the System Preferences> Sound> output>
control panel? This usually will mute the startup sound; you may have
to try a few things to be sure only the startup will mute, not all sounds.
Of course, you could likely write an apple script in automator or in
text edit, that could automatically mute before shutdown and then
in startup items, have the script un-mute the audio for everything.
There are possibilities that do not include the command line; but
if you learn how to use that, without messing up other functions,
then even more custom control is possible in Mac OS X.
With that, you could write a substitute 'sound file' with white noise
or nothing in there; so instead of Bong, it'd be as quiet as a mouse.
PS: You may have a local reason why the site link posted above
does not work for you, but it does function and if the product is
free to use, and does not include adware or malware, here is an
untested download link from their site. (I can go there, easily.)
    http://www.allvu.com/index.php/sndownloadpage.html
    and note:
    http://www.allvu.com/downloads/StartNinjaInstaller.dmg is the
actual DL link for this product. Mouse over the buttons to see it.
(The other downloads are highly suspect; even this one is to me)
There may be a reason in your Mac OS X 10.9.x for gatekeeper
to not allow odd download installations, there is a way around
that feature, but I do not recommend using unknown software.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • On my Mac Pro how can I get voiceover to start reading at a specific point on a document?, on my Mac Pro how can I get voiceover to start reading at a specific point on a document?

On my Mac Pro how can I get voiceover to start reading at a specific point in a document, and then continue on to the next paragraph and so on?  Thank you.  Ed

    Welcome to the Apple family!!!!
How can I cause the VO cursor(box) show-up/start?
Press Control-Option and F5.   The F5 key is located on the top row of keys 6th key over.  This is a toggling "Keyboard Shortcut" for turning VoiceOver on and off.
How can I move the VO cursor to various sentences or paragraphs of an article and have it start reading ... and perhaps even continue reading on to the next paragraph(s) ... even to the end of the article?
How to read a website with VoiceOver
Step 1:  Go to the Website
A quick keyboard shortcut is Command-L.  This will jump you up to the address bar.  Start typing where you want to go.  i.e "www.thewebsite.com"
    Step 2:  Working with Webpage
VoiceOver will automatically start reading the website.  You can pause the speech by hitting the 'Control Button'.
If VoiceOver does not being reading the webpage, then you might have to "Interact" with it.  If VoiceOver say "HTML Content" then press Control-Option-Space-Down Arrow to interact with the webpage.
Use Control-Option-Right Arrow to move throught the website.  This will speak "EVERYTHING" on the page.
Most website that I've found have their articles labeled as 'Heading'.  You can jump from heading to heading, by pressing Control-Option-Shift-H.
If you'd like an itemized alphabetical listing of the site, press Control-Option-I
Press Control-Option-Space on the link or article you want to view.
Step 3.  Reading from Top to Bottom
Once you found and clicked on the the article/link, use the same 'Heading' command, Control-Option-Shift-H to find the title.
After finding the title, press Control-Option-A will start reading from the title on.
Note:  If there are any other items (ads, pictures, etc) it will read those too.
Tip:  You might be able to activate a feature called the 'Reader'.  The Reader isolates the article and elimanates the ads  The keyboard command is Shift-Command-R.  You can also find it in the Menu Bar (Command-Option-M) under the word 'View' then 'Show Reader'.
I am using a MACPro with OSX, probably Mavericks 10.9 (where would I look to see if that is the correct information?)
You can find this information under the 'Apple menu' in the Menu Bar.  To access the Menu Bar, press Control-Option-M.
Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac.  This will open up another window.  Use Control-Option-Right Arrow until you hear 'Version'.  If you purchased it brand new from Apple within the last six month, more than likely you have Mavericks.

The  'Commands Help' Voiceover Menu. Control-Option-H-H.  (hit H twice)  is my best friend.  It's a searchable VoiceOver Menu with most of the VoiceOver command.  Example:  You are looking for the 'Read Current Paragraph' keyboard command.   Press Control-Option-H-H and then type Paragraph.  It will then bring up all the commands with the word paragraph.  I believe there are three.
As from the Trackpad Commands, I've copied and pasted below from Appendix A: Commands and Gestures
    VoiceOver standard gestures
If you’re using a Multi-Touch trackpad, you can use VoiceOver gestures. VoiceOver provides a set of standard gestures for navigating and interacting with items on the screen. You can’t modify this set of gestures.
NOTE:Gestures that don’t mention a specific number of fingers are single-finger gestures.
    General
Enable the Trackpad Commander and VoiceOver gestures
    VO-Two-finger rotate clockwise
Disable the Trackpad Commander and VoiceOver gestures
    VO-Two-finger rotate counterclockwise
Turn the screen curtain on or off
    Three-finger triple-tap
    Mute or unmute VoiceOver
    Three-finger double-tap
    Navigation
Force the VoiceOver cursor into a horizontal or vertical line when you drag a finger across the trackpad
Hold down the Shift key and drag a finger horizontally or vertically
Move the VoiceOver cursor to the next item
    Flick right

  • How can i delete some books from ibook?

How can i delete some books from ibook? It says: this book can't be opened. The book is corrupt. I can't open and I can't delete it

I was unable to delete a book sample from my iPhone 5s running iOS 7.  This seems to be what worked for me.  I went to the Library and clicked "edit" in upper right side of the screen.  I then tapped one time on the book I wanted to remove and a blue check appeared at the bottom right corner of that book (presumably you could tap several at a time)  Anyway, when the blue check is on the book, you will see in the upper left of the screen the word "Delete" (mine was in red) I clicked that and then a confirming dialog came up from the bottom of the screen with the choices of "delete" or "cancel".  I chose "delete" and the book was gone.  Hope this helps.

  • I need to make a pdf document, made in photoshop, 'page turn' and then add it to my website. I know I can do this in indesign but indesign will not open pdf files for some inexplicable reason. Any ideas how I can do it without completely starting again?

I need to make a pdf document, already made in photoshop, 'page turn' and then add it to my website as an e-brochure. I know I can do this in indesign but indesign will not open pdf files for some inexplicable reason. Any ideas how I can do it without completely starting again?

    Hello waitingone,
please try this (all terms are translated from my German programs to my best knowledge):
    1. Did the creator of the pdf file enable the import options?
    2. See import options: choose an other visibility option for your layer.
    3. Let you show the import options and click into one with a black background and try these out (often a gray is selected).
    4. See trimming: try the different modes there. Often works: "Media".
    5. Is the pdf file (eg from Word) correctly created?
    6. Is the PDF file protected? >>> no import possible.
    7. If that does not help, store the pdf file in Acrobat, repair possible errors, run the PDF Optimizer before placing in InDesign.
    Good luck!
    Hans-Günter
