Can't side scroll on new MacBook trackpad

I am unable to use a two finger scroll to scroll sideways on my (new model) MacBook Pro. I can do vertical scrolling in a window, but not side to side. I used to be able to, but one day I just noticed I can't.
I've checked in Safari, Finder, Preview, and iPhoto. These are times there is a left-right scroll bar present. The option is checked in the Preference pane.
So basically, if I'm looking at a photo, I can do a two finger scroll up and down, but I can't go left and right.
Any ideas?

No such checkbox exists there.
I see:
One Finger
X Tap to Click
_ Dragging
_ Drag Lock
Two Fingers
X Secondary Click
X Sroll
Pinch Open & Close
Rotate
_ Screen Zoom (Options...)
Three Fingers
Swipe to Navigate
X = checked checkbox
_ = unchecked checkbox
= no checkbox

  • Can i hook up a new macbook air to my older imac screen that does not have a thunderbolt i/o?

can i hook up a new macbook air to my older imac screen that does not have a thunderbolt i/o? if not - what can i do to view on a larger display? thanks in advance for any help!!!

You should be able to get an adapter that will change the Thunderbolt out to a DVI or HDMI out, and connect that to an external monitor.  I am not sure what connection your iMac screen has, or if it even HAS input capability.  I know that the 27' iMac BEFORE it was given the Thunderbolt ports had MiniDP input.  If your iMac is any older than that one, I am not sure. But the adapter should allow you to output to any DVI or HDMI display, depending on which adapter you get.

  • What things can I do on my new Macbook Pro Retina?

Hello all, I am VERY new to OS (Been #TeamWindows for 17 years of my life). However, I've had iPhones and iPads for a couple of years now, so I'm a pro (No pun intended) with iOS. But OS on the other hand is something else! Now I'm a techy nerd by heart, but I've never played with a Mac for more than 5 mins, and definitely never owned one! So I've had my Mac for about 24 hrs now, and I love it! However, I feel like I'm missing something on here. I know there's TONS of things to do on a Mac, but I need some ideas. What kind of suggestions do you guys have for me? Games, programs, apps, whatever, let me know what cool/fun or nice to do on a Mac that you couldn't do on a Windows. Thanks guys!

    Hello enigmahimeros,
I got my Retina MacBook Pro the same day you did, what a coincidence! Congrats on your first Mac computer, this is my fourth one. I bet you are going to love it. There is so much to do on a Mac. If you are a creative, you can use creative software to make movies, music, and picture editing. If it didn't come pre-installed on your MBP, go ahead and download the iLife and iWork suites. They are available for free on the Mac App store. These are tools to create the music, pictures, or videos. There are some pro version applications that Apple sells for these counter-parts, but when I started as a beginner these were the easiest tools of the trade, and they aren't to shabby! I now use Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro for music and video editing, respectively. I don't do much with pictures so Aperture the pro version of iPhoto is not on my new notebook. I do love making music on Logic Pro X (it's like GarageBand "Pro") and I have fun with videos on Final Cut Pro, the pro version of iMovie. I also love to read books from the iBooks store, there is many free titles to choose from, some of the paid books are really nice but most of the free titles are amazing none the less. Which brings me to another point, I love to write, so I downloaded Apples free iBooks Author app and am now currently working on my first full length Sci-Fi novel! It's an amazing app if you have ever thought about writing, it also gives me something to do while sitting in StarBucks in the mornings when I stop by for a coffee before work! The good thing about this app is that you can publish directly to the iBooks store as soon as your projects is finished in a few simple steps. This can make you some money in the future if your book catches on. As for games, let me list a few free ones that aren't too bad on here for you to dive into today! If you like first person shooters go to the app store and download Frontline Commando, awesome game right there. Real Boxing is a fun one as well. Another FPS is Contract Killer2. Eternity Warriors is a simple but fun and well designed RPG. Gun Bros 2 is right up there with it. If you used to play Super Mario as a kid then you should download Lep's World 2. I know, I know, it's just not the same, but hey we're not in 1992 anymore! Regardless it is a very fun side-scroller. Slide Soccer is fun, as well as TouchGrind. If you like puzzle games download Rail Maze 1 and 2. They are addictive so be careful! Also download League of Legends from their website it's a fun Strategy Action RPG type game with a massive community. If you like card games like Magic, Pokemon, or Yu-Gi-Oh, then download Shadow Era from the Mac App Store. These games are all free as well, hope I helped out a bit. Feel free to contact me if you ever have any questions about how to do something on your new Mac, or even if you just want to play online with me on some games! Hope you have fun with your new rMBP, I know you are going to love it!
    Sincerely,
    Bryan
    P.S.
You don't need to lose touch with your Windows side on your new mac. Unlike PC's which can't install Apple OSX, Macs CAN install Microsoft Windows. Just get your hands on a copy of any windows software you like and use BootCamp (it's free and comes on every mac) to partition your drive and install it so it can dual boot systems (don't worry you won't lose files or data when doing this or when removing it.) I personally enjoy having Windows 8.1 on my rMBP just because of the fact that I like their new Metro design. If you do this you have the best of both worlds on one great Apple product. Just remember to install anti-virus software on windows because it needs protection just like if it was a real PC. A free one is AVG Free. I would use it along side Malware bytes Anti-Malware. Just make sure you don't accept the free trials on either programs during installation, it can cause compatibility issues and make the Windows system to go a bit crazy some times. Macs have never really had a problem with this, even though there is A/V software for Mac. Every time I scan my Mac I don't find a thing. Well, I guess that is all, good luck on your new Mac adventures!

  • Can't activate Photoshop on new MacBook Pro

    Program Version: Photoshop Elements 8.
I just purchased a new MacBook Pro today to replace my three year old MacBook. I sold my old MacBook after I backed it up onto an external hard disk via Time Machine. I have used migration assistant to import everything back onto my new Macintosh and Photoshop throws an error saying that I cannot activate Photoshop because the serial number has been activated more than once (It is also used on my iMac).
My old MacBook has been reformatted and is no longer with me so I cannot go back and deactivate that copy of Photoshop (I have eBay records and emails showing the selling and reformatting of my old Macintosh for proof). What should I do? Who do I talk to? I do not want to purchase another copy of Photoshop. I use Photoshop for graphics in Web Development in University so I need it back up and running!
    Thank You.
    ~Benjamin Anderson

Yes, I realized that afterwards. To contact support for activation problems, go to the very bottom of the web page and click the Contact Adobe link and you'll see a place on the first tab for activation/deactivation. There are phone numbers in a drop down on the right side of the tab. Sorry, I can't link directly because I only get the US numbers here.

  • New MacBook Trackpad Texture?

I've had my MacBook for about a week now and since the first time I've used it I've noticed occasionally I can't glide my finger over the trackpad smoothly - its just jittery if there's a word to describe it. It depends on the moisture level on my fingers - if my fingers are really dry it glides smoothly but if moist sometimes its jittery. Does anyone else experience this with the new white unibody macbook? I've tried my friends MacBook and its the same so its definitely not just my MacBook in particular in regards to the texture.

Hmm, mine feels perfectly smooth, much smoother than any other laptop's trackpad...

  • TS5296 New macbook trackpad freezing up.

I've had two new MacBooks int the last month. the first one was having issues with the trackpad freezing up. i returned it, got a new one and it's having the same issues. It's annoying and Apple won't provide a fix. I can't install the update because apparently i already have the update. Is anyone having this issue and is there ANY update on when Apple will fix this issue???

You have 15 days to return the computer, and a one year warranty. Apple cannot refuse to honour that.
So take the computer back to the store and ask them to fix it.

  • Can't get ibooks onto new macbook pro

    Hi
I got myself a new macbook pro set it up and all great ibooks came up right away but my sister in law got the same macbook pro as i but i cannot get ibooks onto it, i have been to the app store but its not there i really cannot remember howi got mine onto my macbook, i think its when i set my macbook pro it asks you questions and then to setup your apple id in the set up process, well we had difficulty in trying to sign her in as it would not accept the password, even tho i have gone into iTunes and signed her in ok but not in set up, so we skipped that, so now we cannot put her iPad onto the iTunes on macbook either, is that why we cannot load the ibooks app onto the macbook because we cannot get her iPad hooked to iTunes,?
gosh hope you can understand me again lol
I have just asked a question about the set up so sorry i am repeating my self but this one was about the ibooks.
    Hope you can help.
    many thanks
    Tracey xx

    Hello Traceykate,
iBooks for Mac is part of the OS X Mavericks. Check to see what version of OS X you and your sister are running. If you one of them is not updated, then go to the Mac App Store and download OS X Mavericks and you should be able to have iBooks. Check out the articles below for more information about iBooks for Mac, how to check what version of OS X you are running and a link to download Mavericks.

  • Can I upgrade to the new MacBook Pro from PowerBook copying the hard disk?

I have a Power Book G4 17", now I'm going to buy a new MacBook pro 17" and want to transfer the same software (I mean the whole content of my actual HD) to the new MacBook Pro using SuperDuper!
I want to know if the Intel based MacBook Pro can run the same operating system configured in the PowerBook or I must install first the Mac OSX on the new MacBook pro and then reinstalla manually all the applications/documents?
    Marcello
    PowerBook G4 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    PowerBook G4 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Marcello,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
No to both of your questions:
No, you cannot clone the PPC hard disk to a new Intel disk. The systems are completely different.
No, you don't have to reinstall all your software manually.
You have to install Tiger from the install DVD that shipped with that MacBook Pro. You CANNOT use any other install disk, so take care you don't damage it! Once this is done you can transfer all your data, applications and settings from the old computer using the migration assistant in /Applications/Utilities.
Be aware that there might be problems with applications that are not universal binaries and require Rosetta emulation: Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated.
If this answered your question please consider granting some stars: Why reward points?

  • Can closed lid mode damage new MacBook display?

I would like to buy one of these new 24" LED Cinema Displays to use it with my new (late 2008) MacBook. Actually I would love to mount the display on my wall in order to use it at a TV with the MacBook (if longer cables are available).
Apple advertises to use the new MacBook in closed lid mode with the build in iSight. Now I heard at my local dealer, that the MacBooks heating can seriously damage the internal display when the lid is closed.
I allways thought that these two devicews are made for eachother. Do I risk to damage my MacBook when using as a video or TV source for several hours? Do I loose warranty?

Thank you Malcom. I read these articles. They describe how you enter the clamshell (or closed display) mode. But I still feel that they don´t not really cover my question: Can extensive use of the Macbook in clamshell mode damage the internal display (for example while watching movies on the connected 24" LED Cinema Display)?
It is just because this guy at the Apple dealer over here (GRAVIS) said something like: "oh - this is the worst thing you could do to your MacBook ..." and: "everybody is saying that ..." and so on.
Has Apple taken specific care of ventilation in clamshell mode on the new unibody MacBooks? Does the heat then flow out of the rear of the machine or is the MacBooks glass display somehow less sensitive for heat?
    Thanks again.

  • How Can I Side Scroll in Folder Pane

I have recently started using Lightroom again (has 2 then upgraded to 5 in the past year) one thing I've noticed is that there's no side scrolling in the Folders pane. Because of that I can't read the folder names.
I know if I move my photos to a higher level directory that would fix it but it's not like my photos are in an unusual place. The path structure I use is:
    Mac HD : /Users/Terriann/Photos/2014/12-17 - Folder of images/
I could of sworn the last time I seriously used Lightroom (years ago and on a PC, now I'm on a Mac) I could side scroll that panel so I could read the folder names.

Although I agree that a "scroller" on the folder panel would be useful, Lightroom is designed to use a keywords, metadata and filters workflow for selectings photos instead of a folder based workflow and once you start using it that way you will not have to "drill" down through folders looking for files.
For instance, to select dates for any given day or month you can use the filter bar
or you can click on the little arrow next to the date in the metadata on a photo and it will filter for all the photos on that date.
It is a different concept to folders but once you set it up it is very powerful.

  • Can't install Flash on new Macbook Air

I've just got a new Macbook Air - new to this!
I have tried to install Adobe Flash Player with no success, can someone help?
Everytime the download gets to around 50%, it stops and tells me Safari needs closing - however it isn't open.
I've already tried a 'clean install' and rebooting from searching these kind of forums.
Help! (laymans terms please - I'm not that 'techie'!!)

    1.  Install Adobe Flash Player.
        http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
       Download it first.
       The next step is important.
Click Safari in the menubar and select “Quit Safari”.
Follow the prompts and install it.
        Restart computer. Relaunch Safari.
    2.  Allow  Plug-ins
        Safari > Preferences > Security
        Internet Plug-ins >  "Allow  plug-ins"
        Enable it.

  • Can't run Azureus on new MacBook after moving account

I just replaced my G4 iBook with a spffy new MacBook, and after moving my files and preferences over automatically, I can't get Azureus to run at all on the new machine. I've removed and reinstalled the program multiple times, both manually and with the shareware de-installer SuperPop, and I've had no success whatsoever at getting the program to launch. Any tips/advice etc that you can provide me with would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Aha! Turns out the version distributed via VersionTracker is not universal. I was able to find a universal build via the Azureus wiki. In case anyone else needs the build, it's at http://azureus.aelitis.com/files/Azureus2.4.0.2_OSXUniversal.dmg

  • Can't get iTunes to new MacBook Pro

My old MacBook Pro had such a small HD that I had to put my music on an external HD. I bought a new MacBook Pro with a 500 Gig drive. The other day I tried transfering my itunes library to the new MacBook. When I have the external drive connected the music plays, but when I don't it doesn't.
The Advanced Preferences window shows iTunes pointing to the right place on my MacBook, but in fact there is no iTunes Library.
This is what the finder looks like:
But here's the location on my Ext. Hard Drive.
It seems evident that my library did not move. I am unsure what to do as I don't want the whole thing to transfer again as the folder iTunes on my new MacBook is nearly 5 gig. What can I do? Followed the instructions for moving the library. But evidently the file that is most important did not move.
I guess it may help to say what happens when I try to play a song with out the ext drive connected: I get an exclamation point next to the song. When I click on it, I get a window asking me to located the song.

Quick answer if you use iTunes default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
Do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in

As the title says I can't seem to get internet with my new Macbook Pro.  I get wifi fine, use the password on my router and that works, but I still can't get connected to the internet.  I know the router works, as I can use another laptop on it.  Any ideas on what to do?
