Cannot sign in to update ibooks author.
OK so here is what seems to be the problem -- Apps and under which account they were purchased / downloaded. My wife had downloaded a slew of apps under my Apple ID in the past, so when she attempted to sign in with her Apple ID there is now a conflict (this was not an issue before iOS 5.1 or so it seems). This simple fact totally prevents access to the App Store. This explains why my iPhone could connect to the App Store (it only has apps downloaded with my Apple ID) and hers could not.
So we sat down and made a list of all of the apps on her iPhone and iPad (the ones she wanted to keep), then went into iTunes and clicked on APPS (under Library in the left column). Once you are in there, a list of apps installed appears. Right click (option-click) on each app icon to GET INFO -- this displays which Apple ID account was used to download that particular app. (Thanks Rysz)
Thankfully all of the apps that were causing the conflict were free, so it was simply a matter of deleting these particular apps off of iTunes (on her iMac -- right click to delete) as well as her iPhone and iPad. Then all you need to do is re-download them when she is signed back into the App Store with her Apple ID.
After I deleted all of the apps, I again tried to sign in to the App Store to re-download the apps she wanted to replace. But I was still getting the dreaded error message stating "Can't Connect to App Store". So on her iPhone I went to Settings and reset the network connection, signed back in to our Airport WiFi network. Tried again, no luck. Signed out of the App store and re-signed in, and glory hallelujah -- I was now able to access the App Store and start the download process for both the iPad and iPhone (thanks Thom_D for the suggestion).
Once everything was back to normal, plugged each device in separately to her iMac and resynced in iTunes. Knock on wood, I think it is now working like before.

I changed my AppleID a long time ago to an email that I no longer use and I have updates for apps that I can't update because my old email is filled in to where i sign in and it wont let me change it to my new one???
The problem with those two apps is that they are supposed to be in your Apple ID and you didn't set up the Mac properly/completely when you got it.
You might try deleteing them and using OS X Recovery to install them again.

After that, before you open any iLife apps go to your Mac App Store account, to the Purchased pane and Accept them into your account. -
i need to update my apps but it wont let me log in. my email address and password are correct as i can log into itunes through the computer it just wont let me through my phone?
also it keeps asking me to enter my outlook passoword and telling me it is incorrect but again when i sign in on the computer the same information i enter lets me sign in
any suggestions?Try logging out of your Apple ID with the iTunes and App Store at Settings > iTunes and App Store. Select your Apple ID and at the window that appears, select Sign Out. Follow this by signing back in.
Regarding the Outlook password which is the password for the email account you are also accessing with the iPhone's Mail app, try deleting and recreating the account on the iPhone. -
When I try to update my youtube app, I'm asked to sign in with my apple password but the email it shows is my sons! In my settings it still shows my email. Nowhere in my settings on my Ipod or if I sign in to Apple with my computer does it show his email. Can anyone help???
- Apps are locked to the account that purchased them. Thus it appears that yor sone purchased the app.
- To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account. -
I can't update my apps each time it asks for password when entered it goes straight back to update. I don't think I am alone in this. I have tried changing the date, rebooting, switching off and on signing out and nothing works. Does anyone know of a solution or will I have to take it to an apple shop. My misses has no trouble with her updates, they are both on iOS 6. Hope someone can help.
Tried that just said cant connect to iTunes Store which was different.

I guess I will wrap this up. I have abandoned iPhoto and viewing my Photo Streams using it and moved to Adobe products (Bridge + PS). So that's that.

If you purchased an app in one account and work mostly in another, how do you switch the purchased app account to update it?
thanksYou need to sign out and back in only if you're on your Mac and you want to update the iTunes data. You'll see a notice saying that there are five (or so) updates but when you go to download them, they're not all present. So you download them, sign out from one ID and sign back in with the other ID. Then you can download the remaining ones.
If you're downloading directly to the iPad, everything is transparent. It does not matter what ID is configured in Settings. The iPad automatically chooses the correct ID or IDs when updates are available. -

The old ID is already grayed in the box for my ID and it does not allow me to type in my new ID.I appreciate your effort and realize I did not provide a lot of background.
My issue began when I unintentionally managed to add an additional .com onto my new apple ID and the system then incorrectly verified this "none existent" address. Following days of effort and emails to Apple support I finally ended up getting set up with my new ID on iTunes.
The next problem was my App store login continued to have the "old" ID grayed into the signin and since I had changed it to a new ID, I could not login at the App Store.
I spent about 20 minutes on the phone with a total of 3 Apple reps without a resolution to me problem.
The last Apple rep, Chad wanted to be able to take a screen shot of what I was telling him, which made no sense to me but I was willing to do what ever was required to solve the problem. Unfortunately, Chad hung up or somehow disconnected before I received the email required for allowing a screenshot. After calling back and adding another 5+ minutes invested, I decided to attempt to change back to my old ID.
Once I had changed my ID back to the old one, I could download updates and purchases.
I realize my question was asking a lot but my hope was someone would have some idea as to how to correct the problem Apple Support could not. It seems to me Apple needs to make a correction on their end but it is now into week two of attempting to solve the problem and I am pretty much disenchanted with Apple Support due to the amount of time and effort already invested and lack of progress.

I bought Pages ages ago using an iTunes account that no longer works as the email address has been closed down. How can I now update my Pages app, if it asks me to sign in using this now defunct email address?
All apps are always tied to the account from whaich they were purchased and will always have to be updated using that account.
Just because the e-mail account is shut down, has nothing to do with the itunes account. Why did you create a new account? Why not just change the e-mail associated with the old account? -
I can not update my apps on my iMac all I get is - To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it. what can I do to fix this?

You might want to browse or search through that one and then create a new post there if you can't find an answer; I've heard of posts detailing problems with iLife applications if you either buy a used Mac or wipe/reinstall your OS. I'm not knowledgeable enough about that subject, but somebody there should be. -
since I did the update to OS5 I can't update any apps on my iphone4 and also had to make a new account before it would do the update. now it won't let me sign in to my original itunes and tells me the password is wrong and I know it isn't.
I having same problem is there a solution ?

The Mac App Store shows an update available for iMovie but when I click "update" it gives me this message, "The product distribution file could not be verified. It may be damaged or was not signed." What can I do to update this program?

Can sign in with Apple ID, but can't connect to App Store for updates
My wife just received her new iPad on Friday. When she went to update the apps that indicated they needed to be updated, she was able to sign in with her Apple ID. However, after a few seconds of processing the message appears that her iPad was unable to connect to the App store. (She was connected to the internet through WiFi). The next day at the Apple Store, the same thing happened as well as to other users, including those at the Genius Bar so we are not alone. Any insights? We thought that by the end of the weekend the issue may have been resolved (high traffic / server overload???) but still locked out of the App store.
