Can't start a conversation in Firefox "Hello"

Current version of Firefox is 35.1 : Click on Hello button, and then press " Start a conversation" box disappears, and no further chat "window" opens. Click on Hello button again, and a new chat has been started with the link... but a conversation window never opens. Same problem with version 35.0 and 36.0 (nightly) . On my laptop, Hello works fine. Toggled About:config "loop.throttled" , no help. Turned off Zone Alarm firewall... disabled AVG free.... still nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

Nightly is on version 38, you might see alot of changes when you update. Please also update your version of Firefox to 35.0.1 and restart Firefox to see if there are any changes.
As for the chat window not opening, by default the chat window will pop up on the bottom right of the active tab window. If you have opened the chat in its own window in the past this should not affect where it opens.
I understand that you have already ''Toggled About:config "loop.throttled" , no help. Turned off Zone Alarm firewall... disabled AVG free'' and it will not open.
Do you have any program blocking port 443?

could you restart firefox, and immediately afterwards open the browser console (ctrl+shift+j), then try to click on the hello > start a conversation button and see what kind of errors/log messages show up in the browser console?
then please copy those entries, paste them into a service like http://pastebin.mozilla.org/ and put the link here into the forum. thank you!

  • When I 'start a conversation' in Firefox Hello, should the box on the lower right corner of the screen immediately show me a video of myself?

All I get is a grey conversation box on bottom right, but no video.
If I follow my own link, I am told I am the first one there, I am asked for permission to use camera and then I get a video of myself, but if a second person tries to join he is then told there are already two people in that conversation.
If I let the second person follow the link first, he is told he is the first one there, but then if I follow the link, I am told there are already two people involved in the conversation.
If I don't follow the link, the other person doesn't appear in the grey box, I don't appear in the grey box, and nothing happens.
The grey box referred to above just says 'conversation 2' (or whatever I name it), it then has a minimise, expand, and a close button. Below that, an exit, and mute video and audio options (both are unmuted), a speech bubble allowing me to name the conversation, and a banner saying 'Invite someone to join you.' and Email Link and Copy Link buttons. Unless I follow my own link, that's it.
Am I missing something obvious here?

Apparently I am on the most up to date Firefox version, if that helps.

  • I can't start a conversation in iMessage with iPhone users (from iPad mini)

I can start a conversation with my friend that use iPad 2, but I cannot start a conversation with all iPhone users (I put their phone number). It says that the number that I inputted is not connected with the iMessage. So, I just cannot start a conversation unless they start the conversation first (they text me first by iMessage), then I can reply their message. Is there anything I do to solve this problem?

iMessage works with multipple emails and phone numbers.
If you dont have the correct iMessage ID (can be a phonenumber or email address) in your address boook you cant start the conversation.
When you create a new messeage and enter the recipient name you should see a blue bubble for the correct iMessage address.
If you dont see it check on your friends iPhone under Settings - Message - send recieve what address he is using for iMessage.
Sometimes it takes a few minutes until changes get registered at the apple servers

  • Can Firefox Hello be used for group conversations?

Firefox is heavily used at my company and would like to add Firefox Hello for webinars and training for our field employees. Can this be done? Multiple users in one conversation in Firefox Hello?

hi Pasquell31, at the moment firefox hello can only be used for a direct conversation between two people.
multiparty video-conferencing is on the long-term roadmap but it might still take a lot of engineering (firefox hello is based on the webrtc standard which is a peer-to-peer protocol between two machines only - multiparty calls might be a rather tricky thing to figure out on this basis)

  • Is there a http api to create a new Firefox Hello conversation?

A new conversation in Firefox Hello until now can be created via button click as described here:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-hello-video-and-voice-conversations-online#w_start-a-conversation
Is there already a http api to create a new conversation? If not: Are there plans to create one?
The api should accept a POST request and respond with the newly created conversation url.

    found it: https://docs.services.mozilla.com/loop/apis.html#post-rooms
please notice: docs depict v1 but endpoint https://loop.services.mozilla.com is currently still running at v0

  • Firefox hello wont let me choose a different microphone

im using firefox hello, and it doesnt ask me which microphone to use. im using firefox 36, and when i use the facebook video call it asks me which microphone to use before it starts. this is really frustrating and ive found no help on any forums anywhere. it seems there is no way to change in the browser which microphone input to use

I noticed that you were using Windows 7. When you open a new conversation in Hello there is a sharing pop up from the url bar that will ask you to share your devices. It will detect the default that the operating system has selected but if the drop down does not detect the device you might be affected by the issue fixed in the Nightly version of Firefox where the device needs to be installed in order to show up in that list.

  • Firefox Hello won't allow me to select which video and audio devices to use when I start a conversation instance.

As per the title. If I ACCEPT a call, or start a conversation I have no choice about which devices are used (video and audio), Firefox seems to just arbitraily decide which to use without asking me. If I make a call or join a conversation it's different, I get a dialog asking me which devices I want to use. Similarly, there's no options to edit the conversation settings to select the device.
I tried just entering the conversation URL into a browser tab, which does give me the dialog, but I cannot join the conversation as it says there are already two people in it.
    How to fix this?
    Cheers

Update: This just seems to be an oversight. Devs, You have to realize that conversation starters and call answerers still need the ability to select their devices. I know WebRTC and Hello is all still beta, but this seems to be something that should have been realized from the very start.
Are you also aware that the code examples on MDC don't actually work in Firefox, but do work in Chrome? Again, I know you say the API docs are in need of update, but for example source to actually nor work on the browser you develop and it working on a browser you do not seems a trifle ridiculous. If you want this technology to catch on, you've got to be more diligent.

  • Inactive 'Start a conversation' button in Firefox Hello in desktop PC running Linux behind proxy

I have tried it in Ubuntu 14.04 and Archlinux. It works fine on Windows (with and without a mic or camera) and a laptop running Archlinux both behind the same proxy.
(I'm not sure if this is related, but the about:home snippets also don't load; again this works fine in Windows).

Do you have any add ons like Noscript or one that might be keeping scripts from loading?
This requires javascript to be active in order to start a conversation,

  • How can I Remove Firefox Hello in a high-security environment?

    Hi,
After a recent Firefox update in a test environment for a high-security environment (I'm not at liberty to disclose the nature of this environment, sorry. Let's just say we have to disable Firefox from contacting Mozilla's servers and further disable Google's "Safe Browsing" due to possibility of inadvertent unauthorized disclosure) We have noticed a feature: "Firefox Hello", this feature causes Firefox to violate strict policy as it transforms it from being classified as strictly a "Web Browser" (which is permitted) to a "Chat Application", all of which are completely banned. Simply disabling Hello is not a sufficient option as Firefox still contains the code to run Hello, which still constitutes it a "Chat Application" as per policy. We have the capability to edit out unauthorized code from open source software internally, but we don't know where to start to remove this code from the Firefox codebase as Hello seems pretty well integrated.
Currently I only have two options, both of which do not please me as for me personally, (I really like Firefox and have fought to include it in any environment I can):
    1. Discontinue permanent use of Firefox.
    2. Discontinue updating Firefox permanently or until Hello is removed as a non-modular element. This is unacceptable as it'd mean we can't keep it secure, which causes us to fall back to (1).
I would graciously like any third option. Internet Explorer seems to be the only browser that provides sufficient enterprise-level control without extraneous features at the moment with the addition of Hello to Firefox. We have banned Chrome from our environment due to how tightly bound it is with Google's "Cloud" services and hope that Firefox isn't becoming a "Cloud" browser for Mozilla, Sync has already placed Firefox under the microscope as it is.
    Thank you.

We have WebRTC traffic blocked (We have a setup that audits SSL traffic before it leaves or enters the network).
Our primary issue with Hello is that policy classifies the actual code used to run it as being very much like an Easter Egg, code that was inserted that goes beyond the spec of being a web browser and thus difficult to audit. It's easy to block services in general, but when an a single unauthorized service becomes a core feature and has code strapped to the browser, that throws up red flags that Mozilla is moving Firefox away from being a organization-managable browser and more toward an exclusively mozilla-managed "Cloud" browser, where there is a possibility that Mozilla will seek more control over user experience that will increase attack surface.
It's reasons like this we decline to install Chrome into our environment, because Google has several services built-in to the core of their browser and do not leverage their extensions capabilities, but rather mandates that these features "must be installed" and that users can only toggle them off.
It's easy to uninstall an extension or to recompile with a flag, but it's hard when a vendor makes decisions for you and tells you "This is good for you, you must embrace it" irrespective of policy of organizations or even individual users wishes.
Thank you all for this information, it will help our future audits and help determine if Firefox is right for our needs.
Unfortunately I can't mark this thread as "Solved" since the root issue is still not solved (Mozilla's development practices making something that should be an extension, a core aspect of the browser), so marking it solved would be a lie. But thank you both nonetheless.

  • Firefox 4 vbc.exe System error - Programt can't start because mozsqlite3.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem

Ever since I install Firefox 4 (4.0.1), every time I boot up my computer I get this system error

I tried updating my plugins and tried reinstalling Firefox 4 but no good. The error doesn't seem to cause any problem but it's just extremely annoying seeing it pops up every time I turn on my computer. The error goes away if I reinstall Firefox 3.6

  • Firefox won't close without using Task Manager - end process; can't start in safe mode or disable add-ons

I've been having a memory leak/hanging problem for weeks -- FF slowly increases memory usage until it's at almost 100% and then freezes and I have to shut it down via Task Manager/end process.
Last week I updated to FF 12, and I also added the Web Developer 1.1.9 add-on. Now every time I open Firefox it tries to go to the "Web Developer installed" page, but the page never loads. Nothing else will load either.
I can't start in Safe Mode because of the problem with having to close it in Task Manager. I select "restart with add-ons disabled" and it just never opens. The Add-On manager page won't load, so I can't disable Web Developer to see if that's the problem.
I've uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled, and it still goes right back to the Web Developer page when I open the freshly installed copy.
    Help, please!

Have you already tried clearing the browser cache, opening a blank tab, and trying to open some other website ?
