Can't start from Tiger OS install DVD

I just purchased a used Powerbook 15.1 inch 1.67Ghz, and need to erase the hard disk and re-install the OS (Tiger, 10.4). The computer has a SuperDrive, and it will read the Install DVD just fine, but it won't start-up from the DVD.
I've tried picking the DVD from the "Startup Disk" selector in System Preferences. I've also tried re-starting while holding the "C" key with the dvd loaded. Each time under both scenarios, after a minute or so of dvd spinning, I get the gray screen with the white apple, and the loading indicator (the rotating notches), then I end up with a blue-screen and a frozen cursor in the upper left.
The computer came with the previous user's software loaded, which I am trying to ditch so that I can load my own (read "legal") software. Also, and more importantly, I never received the existing password from the previous user, so I don't have access to the administrative functions (hence, no ability to update the OS, or any other administrative jobs). Wiping the hard-drive and reinstalling the OS seems like the best (and only) option; I've done it before for other computers and never had this problem, which has me quite stumped.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder; does the inability of the computer to start-up from the Tiger OS Install DVD indicate a bad DVD or a bad SuperDrive? The dvd worked fine as a start-up disk on my other computers, which argues against the former, while the superdrive can read and burn DVDs just fine when the OS is already running on the hard drive, which argues against the latter.

    I burned the disc myself, so it's not the original disc from Microsoft. I did try re-burning the .iso file multiple times (both with Disk Utility and with the application called Burn), to no avail. The disc works fine with VirtualBox!

    Only thing that comes to mind is did you try multiple types of burn media? Also, did you try burning at the slowest burn speed?

    Your fear is unfounded.. As long as you get a retail version (black color, not gray Mac specific) of an OS you get full functionality. There is no registration of an OS disc.
    Also, I'm only wanting to upgrade to Leopard so I can eventually get to Lion. Is there a more direct way of going about this?
    The Leopard requirements are listed below. To go to Lion 10.7 you need an Intel processor and Snow Leopard 10.6 installed if you want to download Lion. If you purchase Lion on a USB thumb drive you can go directly from Tiger.

    About a week ago I started to have problems with the Mac after 10.5.6! First the Mac after shut down would restart on its own in 10 to 15 minutes. I read in various forums about some of the 10.5.6 problems. I did a clean reinstall where the Mac created a previous system folder. After this suddenly mail, I-Chat as well as some other programs would open, then close immediately! Since I did not have things backed up because I didn't have a large drive, I dragged my files and apps to another drive and reformatted the drive zeroing out all data and did a fresh new install then brought in the combo 10.5.6 update.The Mac is running correctly but I can't Zap the P-Ram, startup from the Mac OS X installer Dvd with the C key or run Apple Hardware Test with the D key or boot in safe mode with the shift key. I can boot any of the Bootable disks from the start-up Disk in Preferences.
    I went over this with Apple and they suggested I run the Apple Hardware test. It won't run on this machine because I can't boot it with the D- Key. I ran tech Tools and every single thing checks out OK! This Mac has worked great since I got it in I believe Feb or March of 2007.

    Make sure that you don't have firmware password protection enabled. It will prevent some boot key shortcuts from working, like clearing NVRAM, etc. You can disable firmware password protection by booting off the OSX DVD and loading the utility.

    You can't.
    In order to get Lion you must be running Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    To get there you must purchase the Snow Leopard install DVD from Apple
    Then update to 10.6.8 which will give you the App Store to purchase Lion
    Since Lion is no longer available on the App Store, you will have to call Apple and purchase a code to download it from the App Store

  • Bootcamp Win7 - won't boot from Windows partition or even from the Win7 install DVD

    Late 2011 Mac Mini / Lion / Win 7 64-bit Home Premium. 
    Incumbent Windows partition has happily run for heavy gaming (World of Warcraft) for some eight months.  Now it stops on boot-up before the Windows logo is displayed, with a very dark blue blank screen.  Attempts to boot from the Windows Install DVD yield the same result, portending that there is more than a corrupt MBR at work here.  I have reset PRAM and SMC, just for good measure.  There have been no recent changes to hardware / peripherals. 
    Rebuilding the Windows partition with Bootcamp stops at same Dark Blue Screen of Death.  Will start Windows sometimes from first switch-on / dead cold Mini, but then not again in the same day.  OS X Lion mode runs perfectly, booting up as usual with no quirks or delays.
    Hardware?  Seems unlikely, except for that suspicion of starting from the dead-cold start.

    Do not use a USB3 flash drive. Only USB2 flash drives are supported by Windows installers. Depending on whether your Mac came with a built-in Optical drive or not, you may also need a physical DVD.

    I don't think you can actually download the install DVD. If you call Apple they can send you the install DVD for a nominal fee +S&H. You will need to provide them with the serial number for your Mac to see if it's registered to you.

  • Difficulty starting from Tiger DVD on new hard drive for installation

    I recently replaced the hard drive on my flatscreen iMac. I am having difficulty starting from the Tiger DVD to install the system software. The disk drive does have DVD-R capabilities, but is not a super drive. I hold down the "c" button as I start up with the Tiger DVD, but the screen appears the same way as it would if nothing were in the disk drive (grey with alternating smiley/"?" folder). I attempted to boot with my old 10.2 system CD, and was again unsuccessful as the CD ejected after a few more hopeful noises from inside the console and returned to my previously mentioned grey screen.
    I also attempted to start while holding the option key which produced an uneventful blue screen with 2 arrow buttons that did nothing when I clicked them.
    Keyboard and mouse are both working.

    Changing your startup disk
    You can make your computer start up from a CD, a network volume, a different disk or disk partition, or another operating system (such as Mac OS 9 if your computer supports it). To do so, you change your startup disk.
    Open System Preferences and click Startup Disk.
    If necessary, click the lock icon and type the name and password for an administrator user.
    Click the icon of the system folder or system volume that you want to use, then click Restart.
    IMPORTANT: When selecting a network startup volume, be sure you select a valid network startup volume and not a network install image. Choosing a network install image reinstalls your system software and may erase the contents of your hard disk. A standard network volume icon appears as a globe and Mac OS X system folder. When you select a network volume icon, a message appears in the Startup pane describing the volume. A network install icon appears as a globe with downward pointing green arrow.
    Another way to select a startup disk is to hold down the Option key as you restart your computer. You'll see the available startup disks and can select one.
    If your computer is on a network and a network startup volume is available, you can start up from the network startup volume by holding down the N key as you restart your computer.
    If you start up your computer in Mac OS 9, use the Startup Disk control panel in the Apple menu to switch back to your Mac OS X startup disk. Then restart the computer.
    If Mac OS 9 is not available, your computer will only start up in Mac OS X. You can still use most Mac OS 9 applications in the Classic environment. To do this, open System Preferences, click Classic, and then click Start.

  • Trying to start from Tiger DVD gets cryptic screen

    I am having trouble starting up my iBook. I get to the log in screen, type in my password, and the computer stalls after I get my desktop background picture. The tech at the Apple Store told me to reinstall my operating system. I tried to do a start-up on the DVD, but I'm getting a screen with two ovals (they look like the Apple mouse for my iMac). One appears to be telling me to install some batteries, and the second seems to be telling me to lock the cover. I can't boot up on the install disk without getting past the road block. Any ideas what this screen is telling me to do?

    I had that happen to me a couple of weeks ago. Kind of weird isn't it. It took me a few minutes of head scratching before I figured it out.
    This indicates that your iBook shipped with a version of 10.4.x and therefore won't boot from the Tiger retail 10.4.
    So instead of booting from the Tiger disc, boot from the restore disc that came with your iBook. That will have the proper version of OS 10.4.x to boot your iBook.

    I've installed an operating system on a external WD 120Gb hard drive. I am unable to start up from the WD Hard Drive or the Snow Leopard install disk, either by selection them from the Startup disk or by pressing 'OPTION' at startup. Every time one of these is selected, the computer starts from the MacBook internal hard Drive.
    I have installed the operating system on an Iomega 1 Tb external and it doesn't show up on the Startup disk or when I start using the option key.
    I have reinstalled the operating system on both the MacBook Pro Hard drive and he 120Gb portable.
    I  have a 2Gb SimpleTech Dual Pro Drive, which I can see and start up by, using the Option key at system boot.
    I have a 500Gb Iomega I am using for my TIme Machine.
    I can't figure why I am unable to start up using the Software DVD.

    Thanks for the tip. In the end I combined bits and pieces of what I had read on other peope's messages, what worked for me was putting the frozen computer to sleep with the power button and then waking it up with both the mouse and the C key held down at the same time. Individually nothing happened but with both the CD popped out.

  • Desperate for help - stuck on grey apple screen, can't start from dvd

    Hi, any help would be very much appreciated. My computer locked up a few times so I restarted and tried to repair permissions but got the message repair failed. I did a restart several times and it would immediately freeze, tried zapping pram but not luck. I was able to boot from the install dvd to try to repair disk but got the error first aid failed.
    I was going to resintall the system but now it won't even let me start up from the dvd, it just gets stuck on the grey apple logo screen and the fan seems to be very loud. I tried doing the reset open firmware and also the fscky reset and even tried loggin in as single user but it locked up there also.
    Any other ideas? I tried starting by holding Command-Option-Shift-Delete" to bypass booting from the harddrive no luck there either.
    I'm a bit panicked since I'm a freelancer on a deadline tommorrow and am really stuck. I do have a time machine backup but can't even start up from dvd to try to do an install.

    I got it to start up from the DVD finally, but it gave me an error while trying to install the system. I tried disk repair and repair permissions but they are both greyed out. When I click verify disk it gives this error: "filesystem verify or repair failed."
    Since its booting from the disk now, i'm guessing its not a power supply issue but I can't think of what else to try at this point. I'm pretty desperate to get this baby going asap so any help would be great, thanks!!

    I am trying to repair my startup HD, and I'm having trouble booting from the Mac OS X install DVD to do so.
    I tried to restart after inserting the DVD, and after powering on and playing the "Mac startup sound" my computer simply ejects the DVD and boots up normally.
    I've tried everything I can think of: holding down the option key on restart and configuring the computer to boot from the DVD in System Preferences.
    Anyone know what's going on? I doubt the DVD is damaged because it resides in its original case in the original box in the back of my drawer. If it is damaged, though, will Apple replace it even if it is part of a hardware bundle?

    Yes, if the disc is defective call AppleCare to get replacements. You could also try duplicating the disc and trying to boot from the duplicate. In some cases this will work. You will probably need a dual-layer DVD for the duplicate. Check the size of the one you have. If it's more than 4.7 GBs, then you will need a DL blank DVD.
    Duplicate a CD or DVD
    1. Insert the DVD/CD;
    2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
    3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
    4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
    5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
    6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

    Yes, especially if you have a small 5 to 9GB Partition, you can use DU to Restore the Install Disc to that.

  • ICal: how can I start from scratch?

    I'm having recurring and persistent problems with iCal since I bought a new Mac Pro and migrated my user files from my previous computer (G5, which was also running Leopard).
    At first, alarms weren't working. I read several threads here and went through a lot of troubleshooting and finally got that working again.
    However, iCal is still very slow and buggy. For example, when I create a new to-do and click on the "due date" checkbox, it takes about 10 seconds for the check to appear. The spinning beachball is a frequent sight, and everything from creating new events to setting due dates and calendars takes five times longer than it used to when I was using iCal in Tiger.
    I created a backup of my iCal file, and manually exported my calendars for extra protection. Then I used AppZapper to completely uninstall iCal and all related files, and I used Pacifist and the OS X DVDs to reinstall iCal. Then I imported each calendar individually.
    This didn't work. iCal is still so unresponsive it's almost unusable. If there were another alternative out there that worked with my iPhone and other applications that sync with iCal, I'd be using it. But because I depend on those other apps I'm stuck with iCal, and I need to make it work.
    Is it possible that one of my calendars is corrupted and causing problems? What else can I do to find out where the problem lies?

    to start from scratch, you’ll need the pair of model-specific grey installation DVDs which originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro. You can purchase a replacement pair of DVDs for your model MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit.

  • Can't start from cd with 10.6.8

    Ran "verify disk" from the Disk Utilities; found errors and the instructions say to boot from CD.  I put my original Snow Leopard CD in the drive, re-start, hold down the "c" key (from my one and only OEM Apple keyboard which is wireless with good batteries).  It will not start from CD.
    This a completely stock iMAC 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB 800 MHz DDR@ SDRAM.
    I have tried restarting while holding the "c", again while holding the "control" again while holding the "command" key, again while holding the "option" key, and again while holding the "shift+c" keys.  Nothing works.
    The CD is fine, I can run anything I want from the drive after the machine is booted.  I noticed in another post where a tech suggested installing a wired keyboard just for this procedure but I don't want to buy a keyboard just for this purpose, and I don't have any friends with wired keyboards to borrow, they all have PC's.
    Please advise, I just want to run the "verify disk" utility to clean or repair my drive.

    As a techie I keep both a wired keyboard and mouse in my tech kit. However there's a workaround for you since you can boot using your computer's hard drive. Put your DVD in, open the System Preferences, and select the Startup Disk tab. Now select the DVD and restart. Once you've fixed your computer, return to the Startup Disk tab and make your hard drive the startup disk again.
