Can't start up from install DVD

Hi,
When I use Disk Utilities to verify my hard drive (Macbook, OS 10.6.8) it tells me it needs to be repaired. When I try to boot up from the install DVD to make repairs it (eventually) goes to an error window saying I need to restart my computer. In other words it won't boot up from the DVD. I've tried selecting the DVD using 'Option' on start up, but that doesn't work either. Any ideas?

Hi, thanks for the advice. I've tried the pram reset but it made no difference. I'm not sure what the smc reset is, or how to do it. Can you enlighten me?  I'll try the boot in safe mode also.

  • Can't start up from Install disk

    I'm using a MacBook purchased 3/07. System 10.4.11
I can't start up from the Install Disk for Leopard. I only get a screen with the apple logo and the spinning thing. I wait 10 minutes. Nothing happens. I've tried both using the Disk for the start up and clicking on Install icons but when it shuts down to restart....nothing.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks. Lois

    Hi Josef,
I left it on for over an hour and nothing happened. Finally called Apple and after an hour and a half of all kinds of testing, restarts, zapping and I don't know what else, the nice man there talked to his supervisor and then had me test the hardware (hold down D when starting). Turns out there is a problem with my ram so now I have to take it to a local technician and if he can't fix it, it'll have to go back to Apple for repairs. Ho hum. I just hope it finally gets working to make all this worthwhile.
Thanks again for your interest and help.

  • Can't start up from install disc

When Onyx checked my start up volume it said there was a problem and I should start from my installation disc and run disc utility. I tried restarting and holding down C and it would not start from the disc. In researching support I tried resetting PRAM with no luck. I saw that with a wireless keyboard I should wait till I hear the chime before pressing C, no luck. I next tried restarting pressing option instead. It only gave me the choice of Macintosh HD not install disc.
I assume I am using the correct disc (imac Applications install DVD) as it is the only one I can find. Am I doing something wrong or is there any other suggestions?
    Thanks for any help.

    Greetings,
#1 If your getting that kind of message from Onyx make sure you have your data backed up before you do any kind of repairs. If you have an issue with the formatting of the drive (which is one of the triggers in Onyx that gives you that message) then you need to backup your data ASAP. Repairs can actually make things worse with certain kinds of drive issues. So backup now.
Are you using the install disk that came with your computer?
I assume when you put the disk in the drive, it shows up on the desktop and gives you all the contents of the disk?
If so this sounds like a keyboard issue. I would try a USB keyboard or put some REALLY fresh batteries in the your current one. Like just bought from a store that doesn't keep batteries sitting in the back for 3 months kinda fresh.
    Alternatives:
    _Put the disk in.
_Go to Apple > System Preferences > Start Up Disk
_Choose the disk here and then say restart
Once you've completed the repairs using Disk Utility from the install disk, quit the installer and you will get the option for Start Up disk. You can then choose the internal hard drive so the system boots normally (Or use the option key to use startup manager at boot to choose the internal HD).
    Hope that helps!

  • Can't Start up from Install CD/G3/8.5

I am trying to reinstall original sotfaware disks. But can't get it to start up w/original disk.
Don't we just simply start up, with CD in the drive, and hold down the "C" key?
Tried with both disks (Install, and Restore disks)...but still boots up to the normal HD and system there....not from the disk, do I can't do a clean install. Although, I have done this before. But not working now.
    Suggestions?
I am trying to Erase the HD and do a complete install.

    Hi, DadOfSixJon -
By interpretation I take it that your machine is an iMac? If so, it should look something like this one -
    http://www.apple-history.com/images/models/imac.gif
(the picture is from the apple-history.com website, which is an invaluable resource for info about Macs)
There are so many different model Macs, each with their own peculiarities, that it is usually necessary to know exactly what is being discussed.
Assuming it is an iMac, here's some more questions -
    • Does the CD drive work? For example, with the machine booted to its hard drive, when you insert the CD does its icon appear on the desktop?
    • Do other startup keyboard commands work? For example, if you hold down the Shift key from the beginning of startup and keep it held down, does the machine boot with Extensions Off?
    • Have you tried using Startup Disk control panel to set the CD as the boot volume? Will it let you make that selection?
    • How long has it been since the internal battery was replaced? If it has been at least 4 years, or if the machine has been unplugged regularly or for an extended period, try replacing it.
    • If you have any USB device(s) connnected (including a printer, modem, drive, or any device) other than the keyboard and mouse? If so, try disconnecting those.
    • Have you tried using a different mouse, or no mouse? Note - the machine should be able to boot to a CD with the mouse disconnected, but you would not be able to do much with the CD without a mouse; however, doing so is one way to check to see if the mouse is causing the problem.

  • Can't start up from Install CD

Hi...My Mom's iMac needs the drive erased and the OS reinstalled. I have the original Install CD but this iMac won't start up from it either when I hold down C on start up or when it restarts when I follow prompts from Install CD.
It reads the Install CD on the desktop. Any thoughts about why it won't boot from CD?
Can I link to my iBook via firewire and install OS from there?
Or can I download the OS 10.2.8? I have the original receipt for OS and all manuals, etc. What would I need to do that?
    Thank you very much!

    Hi steve
Please confirm it's NOT possible to install from a firewire linked iBook?
It is possible, though if you cannot install from the iMac's CD drive then it is not likely it will work from the iBook's drive, but you can try.
With the iMac on (Host), the iBook off (Target) connect the firewire cable.
Start the iBook, hold T key to make it the boot drive. It will appear on the iMac's Desktop.
Insert the Jaguar Install CD into the iBook.
It too will appear on the iMac's Desktop.
From the iMac, select Restart and hold down the Option key to select Start-up Manager.
From Start-up Manager, select the Jaguar Install CD which will take you into the installation.
Select the iMac's HD as the destination for the installation.
...or the possibility of downloading 10.2?
Negative on this one. No Mac OS's are available for download as they have a commercial value and cannot be uploaded or downloaded. Besides, you have the Jaguar disk to use. I hope you can install it.
If the iMac's HD is full you will not be able to do an Archive and Install as there won't be room, but it sounds like an Erase an Install is what you are after anyway.

  • Help, start up from install DVD problem!

My sister sold me her powerbook and I want a clean start and erase and re-install Tiger. She lost the install dvd and I bought one off ebay. When the machine goes to start up with the install dvd it will hang up on the grey startup screen where the little wheel rotates. it rotates for a minute and you can hear the dvd drive spinning and then the wheel stops rotating and hangs up. I've tried double clicking the intall icon with the computer on and it restarts and the same thing happens. the requirements in the readme file on the disc say it is compatible with my machine. couldn't find any real help in the support pages here. anyone have any ideas or remedies? any info would be appreciated.

    Welcome To Discussions primalscream!
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some additional online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, etc.
There are some on eBay. Here are three examples. But Caveat Emptor!

  • Hi guys I'm really in need of some help. I have an IMac I3 for a while now I've been having a problem of my machine refusing it shut down , it goes to a blue screen with a spinning wheel but doesn't shut down.  And now won't boot from install DvD

Please some one help me ...
    A) my mac won't shut down with external HD connected (if it's been used)
    B) there are disk permissions that can't be fixed SUID stuff ..
    C) I have now verified the Mac HD and it tells me it's corrupt in bold red writing and to start up from install DVD
    D) it won't boot from DVD so I cannot run the repair , initially the machine was spitting it out on start up , now it appears to be attempting to boot off DVD , well it sounds like it is .... BUT it's hanging with the Mac Logo and a wheel ... For um .... 30min now...
    E) weirdly when OSX is booted off the hard drive , it won't recognise the Install DvD or the applications one... It just spits them out....
I had an old PPC 17" and it was a beaut .... Never had a single problem with it ...
I bought this one December 2010 and it's been nothing but issues for a computer in excess of £1000 I'm extremely disappointed ... And weirdly the shutting down issue started when it was a week out of warrantee ... I feel conned and am almost at the point of throwing it at a wall and buying a PC

Ok so I've done what you said and this is what it's come back ....
I don't know that these are the errors , but they're the things which don't look right ...
    Throughout the shut down there is a recurring line ;
    It says ;
    Com.apple.launchd 1 0x100600e70.anonymous.unmount 301 PID still valid
    Then there are 2 more which I think are related ;
Com.apple.securityd 29 PID job has I overstayed its welcome , forcing removal.
Then the same with fseventd 48 and diskarbitrationd 13
Oh and on Launchd1 : System : stray anonymous job at shut down : PID 301 PPID13 PGID 13 unmount...
Then the last process says "about to call: reboot (RB_AUTOBOOT).
    Continuing...
    And stops ...
Hope this means something to you ... Thanks again for your help so far :-)

  • HT1338 If I have OS 7.5 installed on an external drive, can I start up from the external drive in that OS when my macbook pro is 10.7?

If I have OS 10.6 installed on an external drive, can I start up from the external drive if I have 10.7 installed on my macbook pro?

Provided that the MBP supports booting from that version of 10.6, and the install was from a retail disk (not a different Mac model), then yes. If it's a newer Pro that came with Lion, it may not boot to 10.6.

  • New hard drive.  Will not boot from install dvd.

Earlier this week, I dropped my computer.
It was probably a 3 foot fall.
Computer froze, so I restarted and got the flashing folder with question mark.
Started in internet recovery, and disk utility confirmed that I had killed my hard drive.
Got a new hard drive and installed. Started in internet recovery, formatted hard drive. Disk utility says it's good to go.
Was given the option to install Mavericks, but keep getting an error message.
Attempted to restart from install dvd that came with the MBP. Tried every startup shortcut there is.
Optical drive recognizes the disk, but I always get stuck on the gray screen with the wheel.
Reset PRAM. Reset SMC. Same problems. I do not have access to another mac or a PC with admin rights.
I'd rather not brave the Apple Store this weekend in the snow in a town that never gets snow (people drive poorly on a good day!).
    Any tips?
Got the MBP in 2010, new. Was running mountain lion when I dropped it.
    Thanks!

Yiou can't use Internet recovery on a 2010 Mac notebook to install any version of OS X on it. That is why you are getting that error. You have to use the original System reinstall discs that came with it to install OS X on a new drive or use the OS X reinstall disk to restore from a time machine backup.
Since your system doesn't seem to want to completely boot from that disc you should try an external DVD drive that connects by USB port as the built in superdrives are known to fail or partially fail at any time. Don't buy an Apple external Superdrive as they only work on Mac computer that did not originally come with a built in DVD drive. Any Brand external DVD drive will work on your Mac except Apples own external DVD drive.

  • Start up from CD/DVD?

I have 2 identical Mac Mini's, both refuse to start up from CD/DVD, from both the internal and an firewire external DVD. Both have 10.5 (had to upgrade, rather than clean install because couldn't get to start from DVD, had to put DVD in, then restart with DVD selected as startup disk). Well, one of the mini's has all sorts of permission issues (that I can't fix because now it will not let me start up from DVD) and the other has a corrupt operating system and refuses to start up. I manage about 40 macs, these are the only 2 that stump me. I have tried every key command at start up (C, X, Shift, Cm/Opt/Shift/Delete) and even made a few more up, it is like the keyboard doesn't work (I even tried multiple keyboards). Right now there is a disk stuck in the drive (the original disk that came with the computer) that will not eject holding the eject key. I have tried "target" mode, but again it doesn't respond to the "T" key at startup. Now I have one computer that crashes all the time and another that has a DVD stuck in the drive that refuses to start up. I think (just a thought, nothing to back that up though) that this is somehow related to 10.5, as I didn't have issues with these computers until 10.5 was put on them, but have people that use iPhones so I need 10.5.

Okay, after numerous different CD's and external drives (all that work on other computers) I found a combination that miraculously starts up (external DVD firewire drive and Apple hardware test disk). Unfortunately when I run disk utility it doesn't show the hard drive. So do I assume that the power supply is bad, since the internal CD/DVD drive and the internal hard drive don't work? According to the person that used this computer the CD drive was working before it refused to start up. Would a bad power supply cause just the hard drive and CD drive to stop working or would the entire computer not work?

  • Start up From Install Disk

I can't start up from my Mac OS X 10.4 install disk. I need to to do some possible disk repairs. When I follow the directions for starting form another disk, I fail to get the DVD as a start-up option. It only shows me the MacHD, which is my computer. One set of directions says hold down the option key, the other says hold down the C key. I've tried both.
Is there something I don't know about that could be interfering with the other start up option.
    Rick Kesler

To start up from your OS installer disk 1 insert it in the Mac. When it appears on the desktop restart and hold down the 'c' key. If that fails there may be a problem with the disk or you are using the wrong disk. Until you get a new disk you can do repairs by restarting and holding down the command-s keys until you see the white scrolling text on a black background. Then at the prompt type:
    fsck -fy
hit return. If it repairs something do it again until there are no repairs needed. Then type"
    reboot mac
    hit return

  • Grey screen won't allow me to install Leopard from install DVD

I'm trying to do a fresh installation of Leopard on my Mac Pro. I have used the Leopard install DVD previously to install to this machine when Leopard was first released and I had no problem then. Now, the machine boots and I can hear it reading from the DVD. On screen is the apple sign and the rotating symbol underneath it. After a while I hear the hard disks power down and then up again and shortly after that, the screen fills with a dark screen from top to bottom and a message says that I need to restart the machine by holding down the power button. It never gets past that point. I can boot with no problem to the current installation on hard disk, but can't do a new installation.
I've tried this with all peripherals detached. I've even tried taking out all the hard disks just ot see what happens, and I get the same problem. I've verified/repaired the hard disks and also run a repair on the security rights. No success.
I have also tried the original Tiger install disk that came with the machine and that does the same thing, so I'm beginning to assume that this is some sort of hardware issue. I've checked the console logs, and the last thing that seems to be there is a message saying:
14/04/2009 09:55:41 [0x0-0x1e01e].com.apple.systempreferences[230] Could not interpret boot device as either network or disk
The hardware diagnostics tests report no problems.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks

  • [Solved] Can't start GParted from XFCE menu

    Hi,
I have polkit installed but I can't start GParted from the XFCE menu. Do I need to edit any configuration files to make this work? The wiki isn't very clear about what to do after installing polkit. Thanks.

In my Xfce4 installation, it's /usr/share/applications/GParted, which I copied over to ~/.local/share/applications/, as kaixi suggested, and it appeared there as gparted.desktop.  Right-click for Properties > Launcher > Command, and in that field (not wanting to install gksu) I put sudo gparted, which works, thanks.

  • MacBook Pro not starting OS X install DVD

So I purchased a 15" MBP in August 2010, and I formatted it yesterday. I zeroed it out, and currently have no OS. And now when I'm trying to start OS X Install DVD (10.6 family bundle) and it wont start. Im holding alt button and it finds the disc. I click it and there pops up a gray Apple logo. No spinning circle or anything, just the logo. My buddy tried the disk on his 13" 2010 MBP and it worked fine.
What can I do? The only steps ive done so far is format the disk, then zeroing it out, and now it wont install.

    Hi,
You cant lose it!!! The installation disk is part of your mac and it is extremely important!
