Can't start video chat after screen sharing

I was engaged in a video chat with my dad - everything was working fine. I offered to let him share my screen, and that worked fine as well. He then tried to switch back to his own screen - I'm not sure what happened, but the end result is that neither one of us can initiate a video chat anymore. When we make ourselves available on our respective computers, we are able to text message, but the phone, video, and screen sharing icons remain grey. When I go to recent chats and click on the video chat with my dad, it says he is currently busy in another conference. When he goes into his recent chats and clicks on me, nothing happens. "Control" and "Escape" do nothing. We are both using 24" iMacs less than one year old, with Intel.

On the One successful Screen Share I have had a restart of iChat at both ends was needed.
I had no sense that Control ESC had worked. I know I lost the Audio at the same time but also Text chat went west as well. (typing but no replies)

  • File share, video chat, or screen sharing isn't working.

This past month I have realized that file sharing or video chat is not working. Every time I try to use file share it says that it is "calculating time" then after a few minutes says no response from my buddy. But for some reason I am able to send files, I just cannot receive them. Neither has video chat, or screen sharing been working lately, too.

    Hi Max,
Like Matt Clifton who answered you in the other thread I do not use email for anything I would want to be secure.
I do have certificates from a couple of people who have used vetting sites about who is sending them email (even though they emailed me first).
The Mail Forum is Leopard may have something on newer developments in security related issues with Mail. Whether they can be transposed to and Earlier OS I would not know as Mail is not really my area.
As several Governments has expressed the idea that they want this sort of Access to prevent terrorism I am not sure if any form of internet contact is going to be that secure.
Having said that iChat has problems if DoS or SPI filters are in place but seem more influenced by the amount of data sent to you which DoS interprets as an Attack on the threshold basis and SPI just does not seem able to cope with high volume streams, effectively making that Threshold based in it's resultant action.
On the flip side iChat is Peer-to-Peer in Direct Chats (Where Files and Pics in chats are sent) and in Audio Only and Video chats.
In Leopard (iChat 4) the Video Window can be used as th control point to Send as either iChat Theatre or File Sending.
I have no idea what is out there for Mail or alternative apps.

  • Can't start video chat in Messages or iChat

Does anyone know why I'd be able to accept a video chat but not start one?
I cannot initiate a video chat with one particular buddy.  I have not yet been able to test with other buddies, so this could be on the other guy's end — but when he starts the video chat it works just fine.  We're both on AIM.
When I try to start the chat, he receives the notice and clicks accpet.  Then the chat hangs without us ever being able to see one another.  Messages on my Macbook Air (late 2010) writes an error log, which starts like this:
    Messages Connection Log:
2012-08-18 17:43:26 -0800: 0x7f91733f82c0: State change from No State to Invited.
2012-08-18 17:43:41 -0800: 0x7f91733f82c0: State change from Invited to Connecting.
2012-08-18 17:44:01 -0800: 0x7f91733f82c0: State change from Connecting to Ended.
    2012-08-18 17:44:01 -0800: 0x7f91733f82c0: Error -1 (An unknown error occurred.)
I have another computer with Lion; iChat on that computer throws the same error when I tried to start a chat with this buddy.  That suggests some sort of networking issue, I'd think, but I'm not certain.
Both of my computers can start a chat with appleu3test01 and with each other... we just cannot initate a chat with our friend.  I can text chat with the buddy via AIM.  And again, when the buddy starts the chat everything works.
My connection doctor in Messages shows good... I have plenty of bandwidth (~10Mbps down / 2Mbps up according to speedtest.net tonight) and a full cone router (Airport Extreme with a Time Capsule extending the network).  I've restarted all of my networking gear and all affected computers.  My buddy restarted his computer.  I know his router is a Time Capsule.  Neither of us have changed any settings that we know of.
I'm stumped... I've got no idea where to go from here.

    Hi,
Does he mean he can Video chat to other Mac Users ?
    If so Can you ?
Error 8 can be about ports and the LAN Set up or issues iwth feature in the modem or router that can block iChat.
IF he has no other contacts with Macs and is running AIM 6.5 or higher he may need to turn off the Real Time feature

  • Can't start video chat Tiger to Leopard; can start video Leopard to Tiger

I've read through the various threads on the board and this is the damnedest thing I've ever seen. I have both computers (one running Leopard and the other Tiger) sitting right next to each other utilizing the same router on the the home network. When I try to begin a video chat initiated from the Tiger computer I get a connection error (same error regardless of whether I'm trying to connect using Bonjour or AIM). When the video chat is initiated from the Leopard computer, no problems (either Bonjour or AIM.
    Any ideas?
    -Ray

As you have Leopard you only have to set Alloow Specifics and put iChat in the list.
As I mentioned in the previous post - you also have to allow or open the ports in the modem and/or router.
Most devices have UPnP nowadays and I would use that.

  • Can't Video Chat or Screen Share with iMessages to iChat?

So I just recently got a new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion to replace my white MacBook running Snow Leopard. I noticed iChat has been replaced by iMessages. All of my other Mac friends still use iChat. I didn't think this would be a huge difference, but I can no longer video chat or screen share with them.
I send them an invite, and they get an IM saying "[account] has sent you a video chat request". I'm registered under my AIM account, and so are they, so that's not the problem. When they send me invites, nothing happens. I get no notification, and it just shows "Waiting for response from [account]."
    So I thought "okay, I'll just re-download iChat from a third-party site".
The download link just takes me directly to Apple's page about Mountain Lion. So that's out.
There's no option in my security on iMessages to override this issue and allow unknown developers. I have "Allow AOL's servers to relay video chats" option selected under Privacy, and that does nothing, either.
What's the deal? Can I no longer video chat (or screen share) with "third party" chat clients via iMessages anymore?

    Hi,
I have tested my Messages (Ver 7.0.1 in OS X 10.8.2) to various versions of iChat (3, 4 and 5)
iChat 3 can send invites and open Video (Or Audio Only) chats to Messages.
The iChat 4 and 5 can Video Chat To and From Messages. (I was using AIM as I have more accounts I can play with)
I have even done 3 way Video chats in both Bonjour and AIM login using Messages and iChat 4 and 5.
I have just double checked between Messages and iChat 4 Offering the Messages Screen to the G4 (iChat 4) and I was successful.
Screen Sharing requires a Random port for the VNC connection that does the "picture" bit.
However if you had it working in iChat then this should still be working in the Messages set up.  (Basically your router is doing UPnP or is an Apple Base Station doing Port Mapping Protocol)
Also iChat will not work in Mountain Lion (even if you grab the iChat 6 version)
Each version is very specific to the OS version it is with.
For instance during OS X 10.4 it got to OS X 10.4.11 but during those same increases iChat got to  version 3.1.9
There was no update to Messages until OS X 10.8.2 making Messages version 7.0.1
Those small changes tend to mean that version 7.0 will not work with OS X 10.8.2  ( or the other way round)
It is all to do with the support apps and frameworks that help the app to work.

  • IChat Error (Video, Audio, and Screen Sharing)

I received a Black Macbook for Christmas, and have not had any problems with it until today. Yesterday I installed 2GB of Kingston RAM that I ordered online from Newegg, and today I cannot do anything in iChat besides chat. Whenever I attempt to start an audio chat, video chat, or screen sharing, I recieve an error.
"There was a communication error during your chat."
"______ cancelled the connection. You can send details about this problem to Apple to help improve future versions of iChat"
I've tried it with 3 different people and it gives me the same error.
Last week I was video chatting and screen sharing fine with the same people.
I don't see how it would affect it but is there any chance it was caused by the RAM? Other than that I have had no problems at all. :\
    Thanks in advance. ^_^

    I fixed the problem. ^_^
If anyone else has this problem, it might be caused by internet sharing. I had internet sharing setup with my 360, as soon as I cut that off it worked fine.

  • After connecting the clients to start video chat using RTMFP , Can the server finish the video chat

After connecting the clients to start video chat using RTMFP , Can the server finish the video chat between clients regardless of clients' will ?

    Hi,
I looked on this site http://portforward.com/routers.htm
It lists many routing devices both modems and routers.
I did not see the Surfboard you listed but that does not mean it does not route (It just means it is not in the list)
Your computer is getting the IP 192.168.1.3 which means a device somewhere between you and the internet is routing.
Most likely in System Preferences > Network for the connection method you are using you can see a "Router IP" (192.168.1.1 is most likely based on the IP you get)
Type this into to your Web Browser like you would Apple.com
You should get a Pop Up.
Hopefully it will tell what device you are now trying to Log in to.
This info may help in looking in the Port Forward list.
If not check all the Motorola devices listed and then iChat in the Next page.
The third page from the Link page I gave you will detail the default access info (IP and User ID and Password) for each device you visit.
You may find that there is a common User ID and password across the various devices and this may work for you.
At Random this one says admin and motorola as the User ID and Password. (others may say different)
Don't worry about the fact it says to set a Static IP at this stage Or the Port Forwarding info further down each page.
You will hopefully be now looking at the web pages stored on the modem.
They work like any other web pages with menu items and links to other pages.
Search all the menu items and link to see if the device has UPnP
It tends to be in different places on different routing devices but try Advanced or Admin as well as anything to to do with opening ports.
A Status page like the first pic on the second link page I listed may well tell you if it has UPnP enable or not (but this is not always the case)
Tell us what you find out or if you have some other routing device in between you and the Motorola Surfboard.

  • Video Chat and Screen Share Crash after a few seconds

I currently have a Mac Pro and an 802.11N airport extreme. I can do a speedtest and get downloads of 14mbps supposedly.
Whenever I start a video chat or screen share with someone (I just installed leopard tonight) It starts up and then after a few moments crashes and it wants me to send the error report to apple.
What could be the issue? Is it a firewall thing? Hardware glitch?
I have no idea, but would LOVE To get this fixed.
    Thanks

I have the exact same issue. Apple has already replaced the Airport Extreme but that did not help. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

  • Can't video chat or screen share with one person

Hi, I can video chat and screen share with one remote colleague but not with another. When I try, I get the message 'Failed to start screen sharing because: Screen sharing could not be established' (and a similar message for video.
He has a brand-new iMac with Leopard, so there is no compatibility issue.
This would be very useful for us, can anyone suggest a solution?
    Thanks
    Phil

There are various threads on getting iChat to work with various routers. There are a couple of Support docs that talk about it, but I always have trouble finding them, now.
Use the 'more options' search function and show posts in the last year instead of the last 90 days, which I believe it defaults to.
One thing I know of is Internet Sharing cannot be turned on. Another common problem is double-NATting, where their modem is serving out addresses via NAT and the Router is sharing those out on its own NAT. You should only have one running.

  • Can't Video Chat or Screen Share, why?

I need a nice fellow to help me out.
I don't know what I'm doing here, having never really used iChat. I can IM, but whenever I try to video chat or screen share I get a communication error.
I am on a wireless network so I suspect that perhaps my wireless router has a firewall that is preventing this. My firewall is turned off on this computer.
Where should I begin to even figure out what is the cause of the problem? What questions should I ask and what settings should I check?
    I appreciate any advice.
    Thanks
    Dan

    Hi
Is your mum PC or Mac?
If Mac to Mac, have both ends done the following?
iChat>Preferences>Video>Bandwidth limit: None (500Kbps if Verizon, Road Runner or Comcast)
    System Preferences>Quicktime>Streaming>Streaming speed: 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN
    Restart iChat
If there is a PC end, has PC done setup as per http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html#_Service ?
    Does anything at http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page15.html#CertainBuddy help?

  • No video window during video chat after fresh install leopard

    Hi there,
my father and I want to use iChat as we've done before a million times. Now after he has done a clean install of leopard (was using tiger before) we can make a video chat but he can't see me. Though he HAS a video screen where he sees himself and I can see him, I don't have problems with iChat apart from the fact that it is sometimes out of sync (more out of sync than in sync actually).
I saw his connection doctor screenshot and that says that he has "one-way traffic" (translated) for 1-on-1 video chat. So, there's a problem here but I don't know what to do next.
Also, he can't ask "share remote screen". it's greyed out.
If someone could help out here or point into what we should look into that would be much appreciated.
    BassPlaya

    Hi,
    Ok understood.
    Simplified version.
Internet Speed = Broadly what you pay for but needs checking.
Speed Test = equals what you actually get and tests close to what it should be if nothing is happening but will/Should read about 80% of what you pay for.
Bandwidth = what is left after other computers and apps have their share of the Speed test speed.
    Another view of Bandwidth.
On a German Autobahn there is no speed limit. When the road is empty you can go as fast as your car will allow.
However ,in rush hour, near cities you have to deal with lots of other traffic and may only do 30Mph at times.
    Quicktime in Leopard and Earlier.
This has a setting in System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab.
This sets what Speed any Video Stream is downloaded or Streamed out at.
For iChat 3 in Tiger (10.4.x) this was read as 0kbps at the Automatic setting. In Leopard this was made to be read as 384kbps.
Therefore for sometime we have suggested using 1.5Mbps as the speed setting (There was also something wrong with Intranet/LAN in Tiger)
This effectively capped iChat to potentially less than your Internet speed (whichever measurement) if you had a Speed that was faster.
Upload has always been the controlling factor as it tends to be the lower speed in DSL connections.
iChat 5 is Not capped by any Quicktime setting as it is not there.
For some people this has meant a vast jump in the speeds at which they can potentially send data to a Buddy - to the extent that the other tend cannot buffer the Video properly (your 0.5Mbps Upload is still way faster than the Australian Outback which gets 256kbps down and 128k up at best)
I am subscribed to get email alerts in every thread I have posted in.
I will not miss any reply to this thread.

  • Cannot Video Chat or Screen Share, please help!

    Hi,
I am trying to video chat and screen share with my mom, but I cannot get it to work. We both have Macbooks running Leopard, and we both connect to the Internet using AT&T DSL. She uses an Apple Airport Extreme router, while I use a Netgear Rangemax WPN824v2 wireless router. I think it is my connection that is messed up because I have brought my Macbook to a friends house and was able to video chat and screen share with my mom using my friends connection, so its definitely not her connection that is messed up. I have allowed iChat in my firewall, I have set both Quicktime and iChat video to 1 mbps. I really do not know what else to do. When I send her a video or screen share invite, it says "starting" and then "failed to receive a response." Here is the error log:

    Hi GuyCalledBob,
The Speedstream can route as well as the router you have been using.
This means that most likely you have both devices being a DHCP server and the Speedstream may also need the ports open.
The Site I linked you to shows limited pictures of the Speedstream set up pages and I can not tell if it it does UPnP from them. The Link does tell you how to Access the device in a Web browser.
Before changing anything you need to access both devices and tells us which one(s) are being DHCP servers. Check the Speedstream menus for UPnP as well.
You may need to make the Speedstream not do DHCP and Possibly use DMZ to make sure all ports are open to the router.
The router will then need to be set up to use a Static IP to the Modem. Something like this pic although the actual IPs, DNS servers and Subnet Mask may be different.
You will need to know the DNS servers from your ISP.
I would guess you are getting Error 4 (Remote IP Invalid)

  • Can't start video, try closing other programs that might be using your webcam

I am using skype on win8. It was perfectly fine until last week. This message "can't start video, try closing other programs that might be using your webcam" is always there. I investigated this problem in the forum.  I did this but it did not help at all. I checked nothing was using webcam! Try to reset skype settings Exit Skype : From the system tray >> right click on the skype icon and click "Quit Skype" Click Start >> Run Type: %appdata% Rename folder "Skype" to "Old_Skype" Re-run Skype
I tried some other chatting software and it gives me the same problem. However, the metro app camara is working perfectly fine. I have the latest driver and I also tried another webcam from logitech and it gives the same problem!!!!

Most likely this is one of the registry keys that need to be modified. However, be very careful when you make any changes to your Registry Database. Make always a copy of this data base before making any changes, so you can always revert to the original settings if something will go wrong. The relevant keys are these that refer to Imaging devices. On my system I have 3 such devices: Logitech c920 webcam, LifeCam VX-5000 webcam and CanoScan LiDE 25 Scanner. The last is installed but not currently connected to the computer. You can make a search in your registry database using this item: imaging devices. For all the items I could find on my system, the main key of the type, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00X\Control\Class\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} was looking like this:   There is neither LowerFilters nor UpperFilters value defined. You can open the subkeys of the type 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. and see what device they are referring to.

  • Stalls at "starting video chat"

    pbook 15" 1.5ghz w/ 1gb ram
    OS X 10.4.2 iChat 3.0.1
currently wireless in hotel ISP unknown - possibly timewarner
1232 down/1260 up (i know, can't be right, was 1100 down/280 up at one time)
    firewall disabled
I have tried connecting with the appleu3 test bots, and the invite gets to "starting video chat", and hangs until I cancel the chat. I have been trying to video chat with a friend back home where it still worked, and I have been unsuccessful thus far. I am in Austin, TX, and will me in the dorm at UT by Friday, where I hope to regain a reliable connection. When working with my friend (XP) it consistently states that i did not respond, however the test bots merely stall. Is there anything besides possible hardware issues in the hotel that could be preventing me from a successful test?
    Any advice is much appreciated

    HI Bpcunning,
It is almost certianly the hotel's connection to the internet/firewall that is the problem.
However not knowing whether it worked before going to the hotel is a bit of hinderence to being certain.

  • Can't get video chat to work outside of LAN...

    Hello,
I can't get video chat to work.
All computers, LAN and WAN are running the latest iChat under 10.4 (including latest updates).
Within our LAN, via Bonjour, everything is fine.
I'm now trying to set up an offsite Intel iMac (10.4) and I can't connect via video chat with them.
I've had this problem in the past and eventually gave up (so much for "it just works" - I've spent the last 10+ years dealing with Macs and Mac-based networking, I can't imagine "my dad" figuring this all out). Trying again with fingers crossed...?
If someone could help, it'd be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kristin.
The studio router/firewall is a SonicWall TZ 170 Standard.
This router has a static IP.
All suggested ports on the SonicWall are set up correctly to allow in/out from our LAN.
All computers on the LAN have static IP addresses.
Quicktime streaming settings set as suggested.
OS X Firewall on all computers = OFF.
No iChat add-ons on any computers.
    Internet connection speed = 7404 kb/s
    The offside router/firewall is a LinkSys WRT54G
This router does not have a static IP.
DMZ is ON and set to the only computer connected to it.
Computer has a static IP address.
Quicktime streaming settings set as suggested.
OS X Firewall on all computers = OFF.
    No iChat add-ons on computer.
    Internet connection speed = 5116 kb/s
If any more information is required to help you help me, just let me know!

Does the TZ170 have UPnP or Port Triggering then ?
I can not see that it does here
Opening the ports in the manner listed on that link will only allow one computer (IP) to use the open ports.
The Linksys is router and you have not mentioned what the modem is doing at that end.
Why not use UPnP here ? The Linksys does it (on the Administration page)
Most likely this needs the Respond to Anonymous Pings checked on the Security page.
