Can't startup from OS9 retail install disk on iMac G3 DV

Hi All,
I'm trying to bring my old iMac DV (slot load) back to life and am having a problem trying to install OS9 from the retail install disk (I don't have the original disks that came with the system). Hardware-wise, all is ok with the iMac. However, when I try to start the system from the OS9 install CD (by holding down C during startup) the machine refuses to start from the CD. The disk is is good shape and I am able to startup from CD if I use any of my OSX install disks, but I can't get it to start for the OS9 install disk. As I said, it is the retail version of OS9 so I don't know if that has something to do with it.
Any help would be appreciated.

An iMac DV (Slot Loading) model originally came with OS 8.6, which means that it should be able to use any version retail OS 9 Install CD (white label with gold 9).
Since it boots okay to an OSX install disk, that the machine's firmware has almost certainly been updated, and that the optical drive is okay. Nonetheless, I would suggest using an audio CD cleaning disk in the drive to clean its lenses.
That pretty much leaves the OS 9 Install CD as the problem. Check it carefully - unlike audio disks, the Mac is far more fussy about a data disk such as an install CD. Make sure there are no scratches, no smudges or dirt on it at all.

    1. I was going to Verify (and then maybe Repair) HD by starting up my computer from the OS 10.5 install disk, but my laptop just blacked out (froze) each time I tried to start up from the 10.5 install disk. I tried starting up holding down the "c" key, the "option" key, and the "shift" key.
    Each time my laptop just blacked out and froze. Odd as the 10.5 install disk has very rarely ben used and has no visible scratches, etc. I think I haven't used it since the original install.
    2. So I tried instead the original Install Disk 1 that came factory specific with the MacBook Pro (which also has 10.5 and iLife, etc. on it). Held down the "c" key and I was able to boot from the Disk (and do a Verify Disk, etc.). No problems at all.
    Anyone know what could be up with my OS 10.5 Install Disk? Is there a way to test if the Disk itself is somehow damaged?

    I am all for these forums in helping people out. I know some questions/ answers can't be all black and white.
    But - in the interests of clarity for others out there -
    1. Again, I was not trying to INSTALL from the 10.5 Install Disk.
    2. I was merely trying to insert it and use it to VERIFY my HD.
    3. I know one cannot do an "update" INSTALL from (for example) a 10.4 Disk if one already has 10.5 installed.
    4. But - through the incarnations of 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 - I had always been able to use the OS X retail install disk (no matter how old) to check out my HD, even if my HD had (for example) 10.3.5 on it and my Install Disk was just 10.3.
    According to the link William posted, this may be different (I would guess on rare occasions), starting with Leopard.
    5. But, given my history through all the incarnations of OS X, I was puzzled when it seemed my laptop could not read my very unused, mint 10.5 OS Install Disk. A mystery. But when I washed a seemingly flawless disk, it worked afterwards. So something must have been on it I couldn't see.

    If the Snow Leopard install disk came with or otherwise is compatible with your iMac, you can boot from it, but that won't allow you to run software (other than the utilities that are part of the installation set). You will have to install Snow Leopard, either on a partition on the iMac's internal hard drive or on an external drive, before you will be able to run applications.

    I recently switched from my old PowerBook G4 (running Leopard 10.5.2) to a newer MacBook Pro (running Leopard 10.5.5). I migrated my account and permissions from the PB to the MacBook Pro, and everything is working just fine except for iTunes (version 8.0.2) and my older 160 GB iPod Classic (running 1.1.2).
    NOTE: THE VERSION OF iTunes ON THE PB WAS VERSION 8.0.1.
    Since the migration, I've been getting this "can't read from or write to disk..." error whenever I attempt to sync my iPod to iTunes. Previously, I'd never had any problems. I have tried to restore the iPod using iTunes - didn't work. I have tried different USB to dock connector cables - didn't work. I have even tried completely re-formatting the iPod using Disk Utility - didn't work. Everytime I begin syncing the iPod, it starts out just fine. At varying degrees of completion it ALWAYS fails with the same error.
    I had an idea. I tried syncing the iPod to a different computer - my G5 4 x 2.5 GHz (running Leopard 10.5.5) with iTunes (version 8.0.2). I still got the same error. I haven't dropped it, submerged it in water or done anything to it that would otherwise compromise its functionality. So, I'm at a loss.
    PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE!
    Does anyone have any other suggestions? - OTHER THAN BUYING A NEW IPOD

    OK, after the visit to my Genius Bar; I thought of a variable that wasn't previously considered. Because their transfer of media was successful without the slightest hitch, I had to figure out something else.
    Everytime I had tried to sync the iPod with my various Macs, I was using the same process. Since all of my music and movies "live" on an external 500 GB drive, I was attempting to use that same drive whenever I would try to sync. It occurred to me that possibly the failing was in the drive and not the iPod.
    I have part of that library on a Power Mac G4 867 DP (running 10.4.9). I updated the iTunes on that machine to 8.0.2, connected the iPod and made a successful transfer of a large amount of media!
    My only problem now is that I can't figure out how to get the 500 GB drive to stop hanging on transfer and update of my Genius information. The drive just completely stalls and I get the spinning wheel from iTunes and the application ceases to respond. When I force quit iTunes, the drive recovers fine. I don't have any problems transferring data to and from it and Disk Utility reports that the drive is healthy.
    I have tried re-installing iTunes on all affected Macs - didn't help. I believe my problem may exist in the iTunes Library file or in the associated .xml document. My only concern is that if I do a completely fresh install of iTunes where those files would be re-created, I would lose all of my play and ratings data as well as the information about when my files were added. On a related note, when playing the music from this drive through iTunes. I don't have any issues at all.
    ANY SUGGESTIONS?

  • Quicksilver won't start up from 10.3 install disks...sort of

    I have a Quicksilver/Dual 800/1.5G RAM/OS 10.2.8 that I am trying to upgrade to 10.3. I have the retail install disks, but when I try to restart from them, the computer whirs and spins, the power light comes on...then nothing happens. Nothing ever comes up on the screen, good or bad. I need to upgrade to install some newer software. There are supposedly no firmware updates needed. Any help would be appreciated.

    I just had the same issue on my son's MacBook. As long as you have a wired keyboard, the following will work.
    1. Shut down the computer if it is on.
    2. Press the power button to start the computer.
    3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the "s" key for single-user mode.
    4. Type mount -uw / (then press the Return Key) wait for next line to appear with # root/
    (there is a space between t and - and another space between w and /)
    5. Then Type "passwd" (without quotation marks then press the Return Key)
    6. Enter new password (this will be for the root user account) (watch your fingers when you type because it doesn't show what you are typing, then hit the Return Key after you type it.
    It will prompt you to retype the new password again, so retype it again and then hit the Return Key) wait for next line to appear...
    7. Then Type "reboot" (without the quotes and hit the Return Key)
    after the computer restarts and comes up with the login window....
    8. Login with any of your usernames just to get the desktop up.
    9. After desktop comes up choose System Preferences, then choose accounts. Unlock if you have to and using the username: root ..... and the password you just setup in the single user mode You now should be able to make users including your existing user account an admin.
    After you log back in under your real account, it is advisable to deactivate the root user account. To do this,
    1. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
    2. From the Go menu, choose Utilities.
    3. Open Directory Utility.
    4. Click the lock in the Directory Utility window if you need to unlock the utility.
    5. Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
    6. Choose Disable Root User from the Edit menu.

  • Reinstalling MacOS from the original install disks

    I have a late 2009 Mac mini which I want to sell, so trying to install the original OS (Snow Leopard) from the original install disks. When loading the disk and either trying the option key or the C key the disk simply runs for 10 secs then ejects itself.
    I've tried other disks in the drive with no problems.
    Any ideas?
    I've done this procedure several times over the years on other macs and had no problem, so fairly sure I'm doing it correctly!

    Well it took 12 hours to free the space on the hard drive, but completed fine. But still I have the same problems, so borrowed a friend's superdrive, and, it worked, to a point! I know find running through the installation disc setup, when I get to the point where you select your hard drive to install to it the HD has a yellow triangle over it and it says you can't install to this drive!
    I ran the repair function on the drive and it says all is OK.
    Sorry about this but any further ideas? I'm on the verge of taking to a Apple repairer but would rather sort it myself it possible.

    With Boot Camp, you must install Windows onto in internal HDD (or SSD).  If you are referring that your internal Optical drive is broken, you might be able to install Windows from an external drive, but you might not.  I have heard varying levels of success with that.  I'm not sure what the official stance is, but I do know that if youe machine shipped with an internal optical drive, then you must use that to install Windows using Boot Camp and not swap it out for a "data doubler" and try to install from an external optical drive.

    No. You can still make a bootable recovery DVD, but you will not be able to make a full bootable copy of ML without purchase.
    1) Enable the debug menu for Disk Utility via Terminal Application. Navigate to terminal by typing "terminal" in   spotlight. Copy the bolded text below and enter it into the command prompt:
    defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled -bool true ; open -a "Disk Utility" ; exit
    2) From the Debug Menu > Select Show every Partition > Recovery HD should appear
    3) Right click (control + click) the Recovery HD partition and select "Mount"
    4) Right click again the partition again > "Reveal Recovery HD in Finder". Leave this window open
    5) At this point, you will need open terminal again and enter the following command:
    sudo chflags nohidden /Volumes/Recovery\ HD/com.apple.recovery.boot/BaseSystem.dmg ; exit
         Type your password when prompted.
    6) Navigate back to the Recovery HD finder Window > com.apple.recovery.boot > BaseSystem.dmg
    7) Drag "BaseSystem.dmg" into Disk Utility's sidebar.
    8) Insert your DVD
    9) Select "BaseSystem.dmg" in the sidebar and hit "Burn"
    Once the burn is completed, hold option down at startup and select the DVD to boot. This is a bootable Recovery partition, not a bootable copy of ML.
    Note: to disable the debug menu,
    defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled -bool false

    I just found my Tiger install disks. I have upgraded to Leopard but there are some programs I have that only run under Tiger. I had been booting into Tiger from my external LaCie firewire drive, but that doesn't work any more.
    Is there any way I can create a startup CD from the Tiger install CDs without actually installing Tiger on my hard disk (i.e. over top of Leopard!).

    He is talking about making a Live CD/DVD.. You know, where you boot up and run the OS right from the DVD/CD.

    Bootable DVD
    This function provides an easy way to build a customized bootable Mac OS X DVD that includes one or more applications. Such DVDs are generally dedicated to utilities that repair disks, partition disks, backup data, or recover data. Such DVDs can be usefull when it is necessary to restart from another disk to run operations on the main hard disk. The DVD is related to the hardware it is created on, so it’s compatibility may vary depending on the machine used. For example, a DVD created on a PPC machine will not boot an Intel Mac. Contrary to previous version of Clone X, the System includes more libraries and frameworks to try to be the most compatible possible with applications. The drawback is that data will not fit on a CD-ROM anymore. You must use DVD. The System on the DVD is a limited one, and there is no Finder available on DVDs created by Clone X. But Clone X installs a special launcher, CXLauncher, to run any of the applications copied in the DVD.
    Creating the DVD
    First, you can choose the size of the DVD you want to create.
    Click the “Create a bootable DVD” button. Depending on preferences, Clone X may ask for a folder where the disk image used to create the DVD will be saved.     Alt/Option Boot code is all in ROM. It shows an Icon for each potentially-bootable Volume.
    Your Windows install DVD is not directly bootable, and so it does not show an Icon. (An OS 9 Installer CD would not show an Icon either.)
    To install Windows, you need to research the use of Boot Camp, the software that provides Mac drivers and facilitates the Installation of Windows on a Mac. There are also Windows restrictions on the use of external drives which you may have to meet.

    My powerbook G4 starts up installs lots of extensions until it announces that it is "waiting for Apple file service" and then stops.
    I am fairly sure that I didnt get any install disks when i bought it (long time ago now) because all the software was preloaded and I never got round to making one while the machine worked (stupid me). Surely I should be able to get a bootable disk which I can stick in the dvd drive so that I can then run the diagnostic software which is (you guessed it) on the hard drive which wont boot!!!!
    My wife has a machine which is a HP running MS Vista which I could use to download and burn a bootable CD/DVD (I think) but I cant find one anywhere on the net.
    Please help before she tells me again how great her new computer is and I mournfully glance over again at my dead mac

    Welcome To Discussions bunsen x!
    Even if you are successful, at resurrecting the PowerBook, you really do need a set of system discs.
    If you call Apple Customer Service, you may be able to obtain replacement system discs, for a fee.
    Also, If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, AppleRescue, etc.
    Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
    Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
    Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

    If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

  • Pismo running Panther won't mount retail install disk

    I'm appealing to the vast wisdom of the collective--cuz, man, I'm stumped...
    I just inherited a Pismo, which is currently running Panther 10.3.8. I don't have the original disks that came with it. I DO have a retail version of Panther, which I purchased for my G4 desktop.
    What I want to do is do a clean install of Panther on the Pismo's current hard drive (get rid of all old files & get it ready to sell), plus I've got a new hard drive on order, which I'll want to install Panther on, too.
    The problem is the Pismo just flat out won't recognize the Panther install disks. I hear it spinning and whirring away, bless its little heart, but then it just gives up. No joy. The Combo drive will recognize/mount/play any and all CDs and DVDs I've thrown into it--just not the Panther install disks.
    I've upgraded the firmware. I've tried running the disks in OS 9 (which gives me a "this disk is unreadable" message). The Pismo meets all the system requirements (which it had to, since someone before me got Panther to install somehow!)
    Any ideas?

    The Panther CDs are practically new & spotless, no peripherals are connected, and the PRAM got reset when I updated the firmware.
    It's quite possible I have a failing DVD-ROM drive, but unless I'm reading it wrong, it's not made by LG. My Combo drive says it's a Matsushita SR-8174.
    So, great suggestions, but I don't think we've quite dialed it in yet...
    In my travels through the Googlesphere, I found one woman's posting in some forum with the exact same problem. Unfortunately, no one could help her and she seems to have given up. Also, a few references to vaguely similar problems that might have been solved by removing the non-original RAM (I have a 64 MB and a 128 MB in the two slots--within Panther's requirements, but I am ordering a 512 MB).
    So on my end, I'll try it with more RAM (though, as I mentioned earlier, someone managed to install and run Panther just fine originally) and I'll head to our local independent Mac repair specialists to see if they can swap out the optical drive & see if that's the problem. But I'd still like it if the solution came from the wisdom of this incredible resource. Y'all rarely let me down--thanks.
    A related question: if I connect the Pismo to my G4 desktop & start it up in Target Disk Mode, can I put the Panther disks in my G4 and wipe the Pismo & install Panther from there...?

    I have setup an external drive with a a bootable volume to install OSX 10.5 from the install disks that came with the computer. I have to register the OS again I guess to receive software updates. Is it possible to register the same copy of the OS (from the install disks) more than once ? The internal drive still has the original OSX 10.5 on it.

    If you are booted from the second installation, so it can look for its
    own Software Update online, it should be able to find them. Also,
    you could re-install stand-alone downloads of the updates, offline.
    {You may have to be booted from the OS X restore/install DVD
    for the computer, in order to have it choose an external drive
    choice, but you should also be able to choose a destination drive;
    perhaps with different rules depending on where a 2nd HDD is.}
    The 'registration' of an OS X version, if you have no internet, or
    use offline update downloads of the necessary files; isn't needed.
    So, you do not need to actually 're-register' but you do need to
    run the Setup Assistant and personalize the computer, even offline.
    (However, you would have to *personalize a new installation* and
    that setup is where you get into a 'registration-like' mode. You
    can choose to not go online, if you already have all the files on
    DVD or CD from a previous standalone download of each.)
    While a single-user OS X retail install (and the machine-specific
    computer restore/install disc system) is licensed for one-install,
    you can make a Clone of the system and use it for backup; this
    also helps when you can boot from the Clone in a supported 2nd
    hard disk drive and use one system to help fix another.
    You do not have to register an OS X system for it to function. It
    can be used offline all of its life, and do so just fine. You can go
    elsewhere and get the stand-alone update files from the internet
    and save them to a USB thumbdrive or other portable storage,
    then apply them with the main computer offline, over & over.
    So, I guess I don't understand the question. I make and use full
    clones of everything in my computers, so essentially I have two
    boot systems for each one installation; one is a complete copy.
    For making a Clone, my preference (due to experience) has been
    to get and use Carbon Copy Cloner from Bombich Software online.
    It runs free, though is a donationware; and info is on their web site.
    A clone is nice, if you can make more than one; an initial clone at
    the point you first install a new system and update it; then a later
    clone with your Mac's current complete hard disk drive, in use.
    Then, you can be in a position to repair/replace and other tech
    tasks with your computer, and not have to re-install. Just clone
    or boot from an external clone. (Disk Utility can make/move .dmg
    files and disk images of your installation can be re-used.)

    A friend of mine brought me in his sister's iBook and asked if I could fix it. The computer would not start up at all, got to the white screen and just spun forever. So I started up using Panther Install Disk 1, dropped into Disk Utility. Verified Pe
